age and the way a certain beer reacts to the content of the barrel – drinking the same beer at Imperial Oak doesn’t mean it will taste the same as last time. “Part of our business model is when you come in, you’ll have new things to try,” said Semenske, of Brookfield. Hamilton and Semenske, who will do most of the brewing, are working on several beers they plan to use for promotional events before the brewery opens: Odin’s Beard, an imperial red ale aged in a

rye whiskey barrel that features toasted and caramel notes; and I Must Break You, an imperial stout aged in a barrel of bourbon that offers chocolate and coffee flavors infused with honey and molasses and notes of oak and vanilla. Imperial Oak will have seating for up to 85 at bar stools and tables, said DiBraccio, who will head the brewery’s management and accounting. WILLOW SPRINGS – Two home brewers and a bar owner walk into a bar … actually, they’re already in the bar. Grant Hamilton and Brett Semenske have been brewing their own beer for a combined 15 years, the last four as part of a home-brewing club that meets at Brixie’s Bar in Brookfield. When Brixie’s owner Chris DiBraccio heard Hamilton and Semenske were planning to open their own brewery, he jumped in. He’d thought about making his own beers to add to Brixie’s craft brew lineup and knew his bar-owning experience would help. So, early last year, two home brewers and a bar owner walked into an empty garage and, of course, planned to fill it with beer. Imperial Oak Brewery is set to open in late February at 501 Willow Boulevard, on the northwest edge of Willow Springs Woods and steps off the bicycle path along the Illinois and Michigan Canal. Hamilton, of La Grange, said bicyclists who ride along the path told him Imperial Oak will attract a bunch of riders and might even send more cyclists to the trail. “It has the brewery feel plus the neighborhood kind of bar feel,” said DiBraccio, of La Grange Park. “It’s not just our beer. It’s also the place to come for [community].” Everything about the brewery will be spoken for in its name. Steps from a forest preserve, Imperial Oak will feature stronger, barrel-aged brews poured from barrel-stave handles and served on a wood-finished bar and tables, all underneath an oak

The river reached 7.9 feet at 6:45 a.m. Saturday, according to the weather service. Flood stage for the river is 7 feet. Riverside Fire Chief Spencer Kimura said the water level stabilized Saturday, but Swan Pond lived up to its name as the Des Plaines River made a detour into the park and out. The problem, Kimura said, was pack ice that had the potential of damming up the river, especially at bridge locations.

Saturday’s ice dam in Riverside was cleared Monday and the Des Plaines river level dropped from 8 feet to 3.8 feet, Kimura said. The ice dam, located between the Swinging Bridge and Ogden Avenue, could have caused some flooding on First Avenue, Kimura said. However, overflow from the river never got close to flooding First Avenue. According to the weather service, the measured level of 8 feet was considered an anomaly and not representative of flood levels upstream. The flood warning is no longer in effect, Kimura said.

BROOKFIELD – The Brookfield Police Department will soon lose one of its most dedicated officers; a man who has been on the job for 27 years in Brookfield enforcing local ordinances and keeping the streets safe. Jim Siran, who has lived in Brookfield since he was 4 and worked for nearly three decades as a Brookfield Jim Siran officer, will retire from his position as the village’s enforcement officer Jan. 17. According to Siran, he’s looking forward to fishing, getting some projects done around his home and finding the time to work on his car in retirement. “I’m tired of getting up at quarter after five,” Siran said. “It will be nice to punch the alarm clock.” Siran began working for the village of Brookfield in 1984 in the Recreation Department. In 1986, Siran moved to the police department after he applied for a new created, civilian position as the village’s enforcement officer – tasked with the never-ending job of parking enforcement. The position was created in response to the expansion of commuter parking along Brookfield and Burlington avenues. Siran also was responsible for enforcing street sweeping and snow ordinances. During his career, Siran wrote more than 148,000 tickets, according to notes he kept, Police Chief Steve Stelter said. According to department

officials, Siran was a strict enforcer but always fair. “Since I’ve been here – six years – he’s been the most reliable employee,” Stelter said. “He’s really is just a nice guy. We’re definitely going to miss him. He was called on to do many tasks and he always did it with a smile.” Throughout the years, Siran also received training in animal control and quickly became the department’s goto person for animal control issues. According to the department, Siran specialized in caring for stray, injured, feral and unwanted pets. According to Police Lt. Ed Petrak, Siran will be sorely missed by all members of the department. Siran, he said, was known for his dependability; rarely missing a day of work and always ready to lend a hand to a fellow officer or resident. “I always just gotten up and gone to work – since high school – that’s what you do,” Siran said of his attendance. The biggest change in the job, Siran said, was moving from paper to all digital record keeping. “When I started all the cars had radios with tubes in them,” Siran said. “You had to let them warm up first. Now, we do all the reports on the computer.” Even as he’s looking forward to retirement, Siran said he’ll miss the job and his co-workers. “It’s been a nice career and I’ll miss if for sure,” Siran said. “It was great to work with everyone in the police department. ... The chiefs have all been great to work with. ... I’d like to thank everyone by name, if I could.”

RIVERSIDE – At 5 p.m. Jan. 8, it was 14 degrees, but with nothing to block the wind, the temperature felt more like the other side of the minus sign. Cheff, a pit bull mix, was left locked in a cage in the MacNeal Professional Building parking lot at 3722 S. Harlem Avenue. As a parting gift, Cheff’s owners left a bag of food and a note telling whomever found him his name. Riverside police are seeking help in identifying the owner of the medium-sized, young male dog they found in the parking lot after receiving a call about a dog at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Police Chief Thomas Weitzel said the dog showed signs of being malnourished and devoured food given to him by officers when they arrived. “When the officers responded it was below zero,

and it looked like the dog had been out there for at least an hour or two,” Weitzel said. “He was shivering and obviously neglected.” The pup was skittish when officers arrived, Weitzel said, retreating to the back of the cage. But when an officer opened the cage door with a leash in hand, Cheff slowly ambled out and walked freely to the squad car and hopped in through the open door. From there, the dog was taken to the VCA Hospital in Berwyn where he remains. It is unknown how long the dog was left abandoned, police said, but it was in obvious need of medical help. Anyone who recognizes photos of the dog should contact Riverside police at 708447-2127 or wgutchick@riverside.il.us Leaving animals outside in extreme cold for a period of time is considered animal cruelty and the dogs owners will be charged with a crime, police said.

Every Monday and Friday she takes the Pace bus to Creative Dental and works in her own private office where she pulls patient’s charts, files paperwork, double checks their personal information and talks to the customers – something she is particularly strong at is making them feel comfortable, she said. Up until two years ago, Dudczyk was driving to work, but had to stop when she broke a bone in her heel. She has to wear a brace and a boot now, which makes it hard for her to drive, but it’s not enough to slow her down. Although Creative Dental has gone through some name and ownership changes throughout her career, Dudczyk has been working at the dental care company for 46 years. Dudczyk said the best part about her job is meeting with the public. In her job at the office, she has seen children grow up, get married and have

children of their own. The original owner of the dental care practice asked Dudczyk, a patient at the time, to work for him. She said she had no idea what she would do, but the dentist said he would teach her. For the first couple of weeks, she trained with the dentist during his lunch break and has been working there ever since. Jerry Gardner, the current dentist at the practice, said he told Dudczyk the job was hers for as long as she wanted it. Always feisty, Dudczyk said she wanted it in writing – and he did just that. Now Dudczyk has a contract, though probably not legally binding, among her stacks of papers in her office. “She makes you laugh,” Gardner said. “For anyone who meets her, she leaves quite an impression. People who aren’t patients come to see her.” Gardner said Dudczyk doesn’t show her age at work. “She has a lot of energy for a woman her age, or for any

person for that matter,” he said. Carol Polcyn, a receptionist who has been working at Creative Dental for six years, said people come in asking for her. “She’s a pleasure to be with and work with,” Polcyn said of Dudczyk. Dudczyk’s job is her life, she said. Although she is the only one of her friends still working, she keeps going. She doesn’t need any hobbies or things like that, she said. She just wants her job. Her tip on living a long and happy life is to just keep working. “Get up in the morning and look forward to your job,” she said. “I don’t see how people sit around all day.” Dudczyk said she plans on working at Creative Dental for the rest of her life.

Can disabled community spur economic growth? Smart business owners know there are two important ingredients to improving their bottom line: Spend less and sell more. They also know employee retention saves money and that a loyal customer creates profits. What business owners might have failed to consider is that, statistically, employees with disabilities have a higher rate of retention than other employees. Also, people with disabilities represent 1 in 5 American consumers and spend $150 billion annually in the United States. So, members of our communities with varying abilities make great consumers, particularCOMMUNITY ly if they are employed. VOICE Last year, Gov. Pat Quinn Katherine passed the Employment First Leibforth bill, promising people with disabilities employment opportunities. Then, we waited for something to happen. The La Grange Area Department of Special Education didn’t wait. They got together with their friends at Helping Hand Center and The Illinois Department of Rehabilitation Services and got started. They contacted Project Search, an internationally proven employment initiative for people with disabilities that takes students from school to permanent work via total immersion training in the workplace. It has 280 successful programs across 40 states and four countries. LADSE and its partners will pilot the first Project Search program in the state of Illinois. Karen Steffan, LADSE director of vocational programs, believes that the biggest deterrents to employment for people with disabilities are misconceptions and low expectations. Steffan recognizes the success of Project Search is largely dependent on the partnership of business, education and community. LADSE, DRS and Helping Hand have taken an important step toward that employment promise made by Gov. Quinn. Now, they’re waiting for the business community to respond with the inclusionary mentality required for such a vibrant and progressive employment idea to get people to work. A meeting of the LADSE’s Project Search Business Advisory Committee will be held at 6:30 pm Jan. 30 at the Helping Hand Center. Families of students will disabilities are invited to attend to discover how they can assist with the development of this initiative in Illinois. You sound incredibly bitter. I’d like to know how you spent your free time as a child! When I was a kid (a long, long time ago), I had free time during school breaks just like everyone else. The only time in our lives that we get free time is when we’re in school (or retired) and what’s wrong with that? I don’t know what motivated the parents of the teenager who complained. Maybe they have a reason for what they’re doing, but what you wrote is kind of severe.

Does anyone have a shred of common sense anymore? I see the snowplows and garbage trucks creeping so slowly to squeeze past without hitting any of them. Why can’t the village of Brookfield require people to park on one side of the street only? What if a fire truck or ambulance needs to get down our streets?

I want to say super-duper thank you to the Downers Grove Police Department who checked on me – I’m a senior citizen – during this horrible, horrible business of Jan. 6. I almost froze to death in here because the power went off and it was out for 14 hours. The police checked on me twice. I was stunned. I am so grateful. I want a great big thank you to go out to the Downers Grove Police Department for being so caring and concerning.

This is in response to Lemont snowplowing. Where I’ve driven around the village and in my own subdivision, the plowing hasn’t been that great. It could and should be. Plowing two times in one direction, only one in another, maneuvering around parked cars only when the plow driver feels like it – sometimes my little middle street isn’t even plowed. The driver comes back around hours later or a day later. Call, the Public Works or the village and you’re treated rudely. Homeowners deserve better in Lemont. Village, please take note.

And I want you to know, I was very pleased with what they did. They were very courteous, very thorough ... You hear a lot of complaints. This is something favorable I want to tell you about.

I’m a resident of Glen Ellyn. Thanks to ComEd repair crews Friday. Pleasant Avenue was without power. ComEd crews came right away, repaired on time, by 7 p.m. ... They are an awesome, fantastic crew. OBITUARIES SHIRLEY E. BLACK Born: Aug. 9, 1921; Chicago, IL Died: Oct. 4, 2013; Rhinelander, WI Shirley Edmunds Black, age 92, of Rhinelander, Wisconsin, formerly of Lombard, Illinois, died on Friday, October 4, 2013, at Milestone Senior Living, in Rhinelander. She was born August 9, 1921 in Chicago, to Walter and Amanda Edmunds. Shirley attended Harper High School on the South Side of Chicago, and Park College in Kansas City, Missouri. She married William D. Black in December of 1947. She was one of the co-founders of the La Grange, Illinois Historical Society, an active member of the Cradle Society in Evanston, Illinois, and a member of the Audubon Society. Shirley was a lover of nature, especially birds; and was a duplicate bridge player. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband in 2008, and her parents. She is survived by her daughter, Roberta Jean Black of Rockville, Maryland; son, David (Patti) Black of Eagle River; and granddaughter, Valerie Smith. Shirley was the loving niece of Aunt Helen Jorg, and a devoted friend to many people. A memorial service was held at 11:00 AM on Monday, January 13, 2014. LYDIA WHITE Lydia White, age 90, of Winchester, Tennessee, formerly of Plainfield, Illinois, passed away peacefully on November 17, 2013, at her residence surrounded by family. A native of Chicago, she made her home in Brookfield, for most of her life, until recently when her health began to fail. Mrs. White was very active in the Brookfield Moose Lodge, and was a member of the Lionsville Congregational Church. She enjoyed playing cards with her senior friends, especially the card game of pinochle. Mrs. White was a homemaker, but during WWII she supported the war effort by working in a factory producing aircraft parts. She will be remembered by her friends and family as a pet lover, which were Schnauzers and Boston Terriers. Mrs. White is preceded in death by her husband, William White, Sr.; sister, Sylvia Eme; brothers, Robert Clarence and Phil Walther.

Antonino’s serves Italian hometown favorites LA GRANGE – My family and I have been dining at Antonino’s Ristorante in La Grange for as long as I can remember. In fact, there’s a good chance my first bite of restaurant Italian food – likely spaghetti – was consumed there. Antonino’s is a destination in La Grange, especially for commuters in the vicinity of La Grange’s Stone Avenue train station. Riders on the way home from work often can be seen making the detour into Antonino’s to pick up a pizza for the family. One of the best things about this restaurant is how little it has changed in the past 25 years. Its traditional Italian restaurant interior and the way the windows fog in the cold is something that always draws me back. Even the menu is largely the same – a special plus for my dining companion. Taking the family dinner to heart, I invited my brother to accompany me. Now, my brother is the kind of person who always orders the same thing. When he’s in the mood for Chinese, it’s General Tso’s chicken from Moy Goy Inn just down the street. When it’s a burger, a trip to Palmer Place is required. Breakfast? Well, that’s always at Cafe Calbay for a skillet made with corned beef hash, poached eggs and American cheese. But for Italian? There’s only one place: Antonino’s for spaghetti and meatballs. Besides Antonino’s pizza, I think it likely he’s never tried anything else on the menu. I set out to change that on our visit, but traditions die hard. To whet our appetite, we ordered two appetizers neither of us had tried in the past: fried calamari and bruschetta. The calamari was incredibly crispy, and the bruschetta was just the right amount of toasty goodness piled high with garlic, tomatoes and basil. Fantastic. For our entrees, I ordered the lasagna. RIVERSIDE – Having a tall team and being able to take advantage of that height are two different things. Riverside Brookfield’s boys basketball team has plenty of height to go around in the form of four players standing 6-foot-5 or taller. However, the Bulldogs have struggled in certain matchups against quicker teams that were able to take the size advantage out of the game. RB might be figuring it out though. The Bulldogs won a pair of games over the weekend and put their height to good use. Friday’s 69-54 win against Metro Suburban Conference rival Glenbard South was proof of potential progress. “I thought it was an excellent game,” RB head coach Tom McCloskey said. “We beat a really good team. I thought we executed well. Our defense, we played really good team defense and contained their excellent players pretty well. Offensively, we got the ball inside. I thought we did a really nice job of rebounding [Friday night], which was huge offensively and defensively.” Senior Jack VandeMerkt led the Bulldogs with 18 points and 14 rebounds. RB is now 9-4 overall and 4-0 in the MSC ahead of Friday’s game at Ridgewood. “We knew we had that height advantage and we had to rebound and play inside-out,” VandeMerkt said. The key going forward is to minimize the turnovers against quicker teams that can put pressure on RB’s guards. Glenbard South is a quicker team, but was unable to force the Bulldogs into enough turnovers.

RB can rely on Rettke By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com RIVERSIDE – It’s hard not to notice the trio of Riverside Brookfield freshmen while they rack up big numbers for the girls basketball team. It’s especially hard to miss Dana Rettke. Rettke stands 6-foot-5, thanks to a 6-foot-6 father and a 5-foot-11 mother and has developed skills to go with it. The freshman center has made a big impact on the team, along with freshmen guards Lindsay Hoyd and Samantha Bloom. “I kind of expected it because I know how they play and I know how I play,” Rettke said of the freshmen trio’s smooth transition to the varsity game. “I played with them for three years prior to this on the Junior Bulldogs, so we know how each other play and we’re good friends.” Rettke said she and her

freshmen teammates have been welcomed into the team without any problem, but who would complain considering how productive they’ve been? Bloom leads the team in scoring and Rettke joined her on the all-tournament team at RB’s holiday tournament. “The freshmen kids are good,” RB coach Dallas Till said. “I think they’re enjoying themselves and they don’t look like freshmen out there. If you didn’t know they were freshmen and just came to watch us, I think you’d just say they’d be juniors or something.” Rettke’s emergence on the team gives RB another option inside to pair with junior forward and returning starter Janae Dabney. Rettke, though, is the toughest matchup on the floor for any opposing team given her height. She started playing basketball in first grade and has continued to play. As a re-

sult she has developed a nice touch around the basket and even has a reliable jump shot from inside 10 feet. As for the Bulldogs as a team, RB is playing the role of chaser in the Metro Suburban Conference after losing to Glenbard South back on Dec. 17. The Raiders are still undefeated in the MSC, but RB has one more shot to tie the standings when the teams meet in Glen Ellyn on Feb. 4. The Bulldogs can settle into a groove of MSC games down the stretch. Only two nonconference games remain, at Leyden Feb. 8 and at Lyons Township Feb. 11, and the schedule is less crowded going forward. “We’re only playing one or two games a week now as opposed to these tournaments where we’re playing every day,” Till said. “We got to shore some things up, polish some things up, and get back to the drawing board a little bit.”

Salary cap could haunt the Bears Hub Arkush

As the Bears Vice President of Football Administration, General Counsel and lead contract negotiator Cliff Stein is one of the best “capologists” in the NFL. Nobody understands the salary cap or knows how to work with it better than Stein, and there are no better negotiators in the NFL either. I can’t remember the last time the team targeted a free agent, convinced him to come to Chicago and Stein couldn’t fit him under the cap. Still, the Bears will begin the 2014 NFL league year in a bit of salary cap hell and there’s very little Phil Emery and Stein can do about it without some painful cuts to the current roster. The 2013 Salary cap was approxi-

mately $123 million and early projections are that it could go as high as $127 million in 2014. But of the current Bears under contract, nine Bears veterans, Jay Cutler, Julius Peppers, Brandon Marshall, Matt Forte, Lance Briggs, Jermon Bushrod, Martellus Bennett, Tim Jennings and Robbie Gould are occupying approximately $85 million of cap space according to spotrac.com. If the $127 million figure proves accurate that will leave Stein just $42 million to spread among 44 players and that will be an impossible task if the Bears hope to add any proven talents via free agency. Shea McClellin, Alshon Jeffery, Matt Slauson, Kyle Long, Jordan Mills, Stephen Paea, Jonathan Bostic and Khaseem Greene are all almost certain to be back. Slauson just resigned and the rest are all in their rookie contracts and none of them have been around long enough to have those deals renegotiated to be more salary cap friendly.

There goes another $11.5 million in cap space, leaving $30.5 million and the club is still looking for starters at center, defensive end, defensive tackle, possibly one or two linebacker spots, at least one cornerback, safety, nickel back, punter and 28 reserves. It’s a serious mess and none of it is Stein’s fault. It is the price of failing badly in the NFL College Draft during the past four to five seasons. Forget going back further than that as any players drafted prior to the last four or five years would be in their second contracts and have higher cap values. The only significant starters with star potential on the Bears roster right now who were drafted in the last five years are Jeffery and Long. Every other significant contributor is in his second NFL contract and helping to stretch the Salary Cap. The Bears have almost no young talent saving them cap space. The Bears do have the option of pushing a significant potion of Cutlers cap hit

into out years of his deal and almost certainly will have to, potentially creating as much as $10 million of extra room. But what if Cutler doesn’t work out or gets hurt? Then your cap is strangled even worse in a few years if you have to replace him and carry dead cap money. The Bears will also have to cut or restructure the deals of Peppers and Michael Bush, which will save about $12 million of cap space if they cut them, but they will then have to add another starting defensive end who will need to be a premier pass rusher and a dependable number two running back. Emery and Marc Trestman have said their goal is to make the Bears younger on defense. Some part of that goal is borne out of need to deal with their cap issues. But the reality is getting younger and getting better, with limited financial resources to make up for any missed draft picks is a truly difficult situation to be in.

According to Pro Football Focus, Ben Roethlisberger was under pressure on 20 plays, six more than any other Bears opposing quarterback. They blitzed Big Ben 19 times, tied for the most all season. After halftime, Roethlisberger started finding success under pressure, but the aggressive defense was too much. The Bears forced five turnovers in that 40-23 win. As bad as the defense was, the Bears were a play away from winning the NFC North, which made the meltdown on that side of the ball all the more frustrating. Tucker gets another chance, and even though the coordinator is the same, expect the Bears’ defense to look much different next season.

The worst defense in Bears history cost two assistant coaches their jobs, but the leader of the unit will be back in 2014. Linebackers coach Tim Tibesar and defensive line coach Mike Phair were fired but defensive coordinator Mel Tucker will return. “We thank Mike and Tim for their effort and dedication. They are men of high character and integrity,” Bears head coach Marc Trestman said in a statement Sunday. “These are not easy decisions and we do not attribute our lack of success on defense to two individuals.” Both Tibesar and Phair’s units were marred by injuries.
