I
hope you are all doing well during these unprecedented times. We continue to be grateful for the doctors, nurses, police, fire, Village of Bolingbrook, and of course our own Bolingbrook Park District employees who have all been on the front lines during this COVID-19 period. Our Board of Commissioners and staff want to extend our gratitude and
appreciation to you as well. We have heard positive feedback regarding programs and services offered during the quarantine and as we’ve started programs back up this summer. We appreciate your patience as we continue to navigate through the State of Illinois Restore Illinois Plan. There is no greater joy than to hear laughter in our facilities, on our playgrounds, and people golfing, fishing, and swimming.
Bolingbrook Park District has kept to our mission of providing world-class parks and recreation services in a fiscally responsible manner to enhance the community’s quality of life throughout this challenging time. One example of our commitment to fiscal responsibility is through the nearly $2 million reduction in operational and capital in 2020. At the same time, we are progressing forward with our referendum projects at the Bolingbrook Recreation & Aquatic u continued on page 4

from the Chamber Director WELCOME! The first half of 2020 was full of challenges and change. COVID-19 aside, the village of Bolingbrook also said thank you and farewell to long-time mayor, Roger C. Claar. He retired July 28 after almost 34 years of service to the village. The Bolingbrook Area Chamber of Commerce is grateful for his dedication to the residents and businesses of Bolingbrook. The pro-business atmosphere he created was instrumental in the growth and development of the village. We look forward to working with new acting Mayor Mary Basta-Alexander.

Her commitment to the village is evident in her volunteerism and activities in community groups and events. COVID-19 changed the landscape of Bolingbrook from the way we live our daily lives to the way we conduct business. Through the Bolingbrook Strong initiative, the community immediately rallied behind those hardest hit: the staff at AMITA Health Adventist Medical Center Bolingbrook, the village’s first responders and the local restaurants. It was truly amazing to see the unity. We thank village Trustee Mike Carpanzano for launching first Eat in Bolingbrook (#eatinbb), then ShopBolingbrook (#shopbolingbrook) which segued into the Bolingbrook Strong. The BACC stayed its course, learned how to conduct online meetings and webinars and distributed federal and state program information. As we live and work in our new normal, it is exciting to see stores open and business’s vehicles on the streets again. We admire and are grateful for our members who saw the value of the Chamber and renewed during the pandemic. We also look forward to working with the brave and forward-thinking that opened in the middle of all the uncertainty.

fter much pivoting the Bolingbrook Area Chamber of Commerce has decided to go ahead with plans for the annual Taste of Bolingbrook for Saturday, Aug. 22 at The Promenade Bolingbrook. “We’re doing a smaller version for 2020,” said Kevin O’Keeffe, executive director of the Chamber, “mini-Taste of Bolingbrook, if you will.

“This year we won’t have bands or the popular Family Fun Zone, said O’Keeffe. “We want people to feel safe when they come out, so we are encouraging social distancing, that’s too difficult with bands and the very crowded Family Fun Zone. “We’re still in the middle of planning but we will definitely have some sort of passive entertainment.” In previous years the annual event attracted up to 10,000 people to the restaurants and vendors sampling their wares along the streets of The Promenade. “While we would like to have that crowd again, we thought it would be best to offer something on a smaller scale for 2020,” said Grace Tucker, manager of communications and events. “We want offer some sort of event to area residents while maintaining safety standards.” The Chamber will have cleaning and disinfecting stations as well as giving away masks to anyone who needs one. New this year will be a beer garden. “We wanted to offer something new but still maintain safety protocols,” O’Keeffe said. “It will be a sectioned off area of picnic tables next to the beer truck.” Plans for the mini-Taste are in flux. FOUNTAINDALE PUBLIC LIBRARY DISTRICT Adapting to a New Normal
T
he world changed as we knew it in mid-March with the onset of COVID-19 in the United States. Fountaindale Public Library sadly had to close the physical doors to their building for a few months, but knowing how important the library is to so many people, their staff began working hard to provide virtual programming, expand their eResources and digital collection and create virtual library cards so patrons could access all of their services from home. They even installed new
hardware to boost their Wi-Fi signal to reach their parking lot so those without internet access could safely surf the web from their car. In early May, they were able to reopen their drive-thru window so their patrons could check out new materials. It was a truly humbling and heartwarming experience to see how many people expressed how much they missed their library and their overwhelming excitement to get their hands on new books, movies

and video games to help pass the long hours of quarantine. Now that their building has reopened, they have adapted to a new way of serving their patrons while still providing the same great services. To start, they quarantine returned materials for three days as recommended by the results of research studies. Their public computers are open, and seating is limited (here and throughout the building) to create social distancing.

Studio 300, their digital media and maker lab, is open by appointment only. Their Bookmobile returned to visiting the community with staff setting up a table and displays for social distancing material browsing, and they began providing contactless home deliveries to patrons who are unable to visit the building. All of their events have shifted to a virtual format, and they now provide daily events for adults, teens and children—including storytimes, art classes, technology courses, trivia and much more—online. “The one thing that has remained constant since before the pandemic took over is our staff’s commitment to serving our community,” said Paul Mills, Executive Director of Fountaindale Public Library District. “Our top priority is to serve as a gateway to connect people to their passions, whether it be through books, events, classes or other resources.” Fountaindale Public Library cards are available to residents, business and property owners who live within the boundaries of the library district.
