We’ve experienced another year of fiscal growth, commercial expansion, infrastructure improvements, and, most importantly, a continued sense of community spirit and enthusiasm!
In response to residents’ desire for more open space and recreational areas following the pandemic, the Village purchased the closed golf course and conference center from the hotel in 2022. Since then, we have worked closely with the hotel owners and a golf course architect to explore the feasibility of reopening the course. However, the hotel owners were unable to secure the necessary financing to renovate both the hotel and the golf course. As a result, the Village moved forward with a major water and stormwater management project designed to provide much-needed flood relief to nearby residents along Cardinal and Meadowlark. This project will feature the creation of wet-bottom ponds, the planting of native wetland seeds and emergent plants in all detention areas, reseeding of disturbed areas, and replanting of trees removed within the project boundaries. Additionally, we will install over 8,000 linear feet of new storm sewer, reroute the existing water main, and construct more than three miles of an eight-foot-wide multi-use path around the property’s perimeter. The transformation of Stratford Square Mall is also
well underway. Demolition of the former mall began in October 2024, and the Village Board and I are actively refining the land development plan that we presented to the community in September 2024. Incorporating resident feedback and insights from potential retailers, we remain committed to ensuring that this new mixed-use development includes the essential elements of a thriving district: entertainment, retail, housing, and public open spaces. If you’d like to learn more about our vision for the area, a video of the presentation is available on the Village website.
Our retail centers continue to thrive, with exciting new additions such as Shake Shack at the corner of Springfield and Army Trail, as well as Nothing Bundt Cakes, Boba House, Fry N’ Wings, and Empower Bloomingdale along Gary Avenue. Supporting these businesses not only strengthens our local economy but also helps sustain a dynamic and prosperous retail community for residents and visitors alike.
Together with the Bloomingdale Village Board of Trustees—Vince Ackerman, Bill Belmonte, Frank Bucaro, Patrick Shannon, Dan Vitacco, and Judi Von Huben—I look forward to continuing our work in the community and advancing the Village’s motto of “Growth with Pride” in 2025.

Bloomingdale is rich with history from its earliest roots as one of the first villages settled in DuPage County. Its first settlers, mainly from Germany and England, settled here in 1833, nearly 200 years ago. It was originally named Meacham’s Grove and founded by the Meacham brothers, Lyman, Silas, and Harvey Meacham, who started farming an area of 1,200 acres of land in an area now known as Medinah.
Looking back at history and cherishing Bloomingdale’s past provides area residents a context of how far the Village has grown and advanced for the benefit of its community. Today, Bloomingdale has combined a carefully integrated environment with commercial, office and retail development within a country-like environment. There is a strong variety of living, working, shopping and recreational opportunities and the valued importance of a carefully preserved heritage.
There are a number of these landmarks that exist today to visit and remember the culture of the past and the traditions of today.
One of the larger buildings in town, the Pan American Bank and Trust at 108 W. Lake St., has had a number of uses over the years. Originally a school house, it has also served as the Village Hall with a police and
fire station, as well as the Chamber.
The first Village Board meeting was held there in 1938 after the building was converted from a schoolhouse to the Village Hall. However, the school district maintained ownership of the building until 1950, when it was acquired by the village.
The Bloomingdale Park District Museum building, built in 1849 as the First Baptist Church of Christ, is the oldest building in the village that is still standing. Located at 108 S. Bloomingdale Rd., it offers the community up to seven exhibits and over 1,000 visitors per year. They can view the richness of past – the original 1849 ceiling, knotty pine floor, and some of the original glass pane windows.
A major restoration of the building occurred in 1998 with the addition of an art gallery. Much of the original architecture was restored and refurbished. It truly is a shining jewel of the past that gratefully lives on.
Old Town in Bloomingdale, located at the intersection of Lake Street and Bloomingdale Road, was the original site of the village’s first settlement. It brings together the best of its vintage past to the amenities of today. To retain the area’s beauty and traditions, the village sparked a revitalization of Old Town in 2016 with infrastructure
improvements, new street lights, landscaping, bike racks and benches.
Its an area that’s active with events, music entertainment, food trucks, and fun in the Square all year long. Enjoy the popular Septemberfest, Tree Lighting, Kris Kringle Market and Festival of Lights, the Chamber’s Holiday Trees, and the Park District and the Village summer concerts.
The Bloomingdale Chamber, founded in 1982, is housed in a historic building in Old Town, too. Area residents are invited to visit Old Town and the chamber member businesses who are located there, such as: Brambert Chiropractic and Acupuncture, Ltd., Hovde & Tufo Law, Pickle Piano, Rooster’s Bar, Bloomingdale Park District Museum, Pan American Bank & Trust, and Vilicus Financial Associates. New to the area is Dolce V Bakery and Gelato, housed in one of the older homes.
Take time to explore the Old Town and all it has to offer you and your family.
If you are interested in joining or learning more, please reach out to Historical Society President Bonnie Homola at hellobonnie@sbcglobal. net. Your involvement can help ensure Bloomingdale’s story is remembered and celebrated for generations to come.

Bloomingdale has always been a community that embraces progress while staying true to its welcoming, hometown charm. Over the years, the local business landscape has experienced significant growth, with new establishments contributing to the town’s vitality. From the expansion of dining and retail options to the success of community-driven events, Bloomingdale continues to be a place where families and businesses can flourish.
One of the most ambitious projects currently underway is the redevelopment of Stratford Square Mall. The Village of Bloomingdale has acquired all parcels of the mall property, consolidating ownership to pave the way for a comprehensive transformation. The goal is to develop a dynamic mixed-use space that
aligns with modern needs and community expectations. Plans for the redevelopment include a combination of entertainment venues, retail stores, residential units, and public open spaces, creating a versatile destination for both residents and visitors.
As shopping malls nationwide face challenges due to shifting consumer habits, Bloomingdale made a significant decision in taking an active role in redeveloping this massive property. Had they relied on private developers to acquire Stratford Square, the wait could have been years, possibly decades. Recognizing the need for action, Bloomingdale officials took the initiative to move the project forward. Instead of allowing the former mall to become an eyesore, the community now has an opportunity to reimagine what
the property could become in the future.
Community involvement remains a key factor in shaping the final development plan. Input from residents, businesses, and stakeholders will help determine how the space is utilized to best serve the town’s evolving needs. This collaborative approach ensures that the project reflects the values and aspirations of those who call Bloomingdale home.
The revitalization of Stratford Square Mall is poised to become a defining development for Bloomingdale’s future, bringing new energy and opportunities to the area. As planning progresses, more details will be shared with the public, fostering excitement and engagement in the transformation of this iconic site.
Nov. 29: Sample Mulled Wine during the Village’s Tree Lighting and Kris Kringle Market.
Dec. 1-Jan. 4: Residents can embark on a trail to local businesses and nonprofits to view their displays of gingerbread houses during the annual Parade of Gingerbread Houses. Each visit to a gingerbread house counts as an entry to win a cash prize when visitors turn in their map. Vote for your favorite house with a donation – funds raised through votes assist the homeless.
The Bloomingdale Chamber of Commerce is a strong advocate for local businesses providing a multitude of opportunities for networking, education, and training to help their individual and collective success and growth. In turn, this strong commitment benefits the entire community as a whole. With all of the membership activities and events and participation of members throughout the year, the Chamber is able to successfully “give back” and widely contribute to the community.
Community outreach is key to help support the local community and businesses. 2024 was a banner year for “giving back” and here are just some of the ways the Chamber businesses made it happen:
• Scholarships: The Chamber awarded 16 - $1,000 scholarships to Bloomingdale residents and Bloomingdale Chamber members – high school seniors; a current college student; and a high school student attending a trade school. A scholarship luncheon is open to the public and held at Texas Roadhouse.
• The Bloomingdale Area Women in Business awarded three scholarships totaling $2,500 to females furthering their career through education. It is funded through donations made by chamber members.
• Holiday Parade of Gingerbread Houses: 19 local business decorated a gingerbread house and displayed it with a ballot box. Residents picked up a map, received a stamp on their map and voted for their favorite house by putting a donation in the ballot box. $800 was raised to support the homeless through the St. Isidore Church PADS program. CodaBears Inc. had the winning house and raised the most donations.
• Bloomingdale Grand Raffle: Tickets were sold for $25 from June-December to win $2500, $500; and $250. Last year’s 100% proceeds of $1,928 was given to Neighborhood Food Pantries, Roselle UMC Community Food Pantry, and Bloomingdale Township Food Pantry
• One Meal at a Time: Rocco Zaccardi of Sporty’s Restaurant and Catering and Chris Karountzos of ANYWAY’S Grill & Pub started “One Meal at Time”, where restaurants donated 1% of their profits over 4 days, or a straight donation, to the 3 local food pantries. The 1st Annual event raised an incredible $1,365, with each food pantry receiving $455 to help those in need. Thank you to ANYWAY’S Grill & Pub, BIBIBOP
Asian Grill, Atlas Chicken, Mapleberry Pancake House, Sporty’s Restaurant & Catering, Pholicious, La Campana Mexican Restaurant, Saffron and Bloomingdale Chamber of Commerce.
• Holiday Luncheon - Toys for Teens: Embolden Wealth Management sponsored drink tickets for everyone who brought a toy. The results: the chamber filled two cars of toys which went to Bloomingdale Township and the Humanitarian Service Project.
• Senior Fair: Hosted by the Chamber in April and free to the public to attend, vendors across the area share information with residents.

During my career in the restaurant business, I’ve joined a lot of different chamber of commerce and Bloomingdale is the best one. If you don’t have a chamber and are in the local area, I would recommend Bloomingdale to you. You won’t regret it.

The chamber benefits us in keeping us connected with the people in the community and all the events happening in it. I 100% would recommend the Bloomingdale Chamber to local businesses. I have honestly never seen a chamber that is so well connected with each other and supports each other and that is not only a testament to the wonderful businesses apart of it, but especially the wonderful people in charge of it.

I highly recommend the Bloomingdale Chamber of Commerce for its strong support of local businesses and its commitment to fostering meaningful connections within the community. The chamber has provided valuable opportunities for networking, promoting our services, and participating in community events, which has helped raise our visibility and build trust with local families. What I like best about the chamber is its collaborative spirit and the sense of partnership it creates between businesses. It’s a great resource for sharing ideas, growing our presence, and staying engaged with the community.
I have been a Bloomingdale Chamber of Commerce member since 2015. I have a limited budget for advertising and lead-generating activities. I feel confident that the chamber is very involved in truly building community strength through their many programs and services. They do a bang-up job with advertising all members and actively look for more ways to promote local businesses and business owners. I wasn’t a bit surprised when this chamber won Best Chamber of Chambers by the Daily Herald Readers Choice. They stand out. So much so, that I also had a chance to join their group called Leads ONE, which is a sub-chamber group of high-level businesses who continuously find leads to support one another. They’re also just very nice people, and we have a lot of fun doing business together. I have had some of my very best leads and consequent sales directly from both the Chamber of Commerce and the Leads ONE groups.
