Earlier this summer, elevator shafts went up on the north building. The final beam was signed Aug. 26 by the hospital’s governing council, engineers, planners, construction workers, physicians and volunteers before its lift.

Project director Allison Wyler said this was the hospital’s first beam signing. A groundbreaking ceremony was held about a year ago.

“You’ve got to celebrate the major milestones with a project of this size,” Wyler said.

The hospital has about 1,300 employees – a number Lambert said she doesn’t expect to change.

“I don’t foresee additional hires,” Lambert said. “We are already at high patient occupancy now and will have more flexibility with all-private rooms. We won’t have to close off half a room when patients require isolation and waste that space.”

Lambert said the hospital updates will allow staff to bring tests and procedures to patients’ bedsides, in addition to guests being able to stay overnight with family members.

Arndt said the update is a “fun, challenging project” for Mortenson’s 200-person crew.

Construction has been night and day, Arndt said, adding that noise is monitored to ensure patients aren’t woken in their sleep.

When asked about new bedside and operating room technology, Arndt estimated the construction cost is just a fraction of the multimillion-dollar modernization plan with technology upgrades as the bulk of the expense.

“Almost every update includes technology,” Arndt said. “Every patient’s room

will be called a ‘smart room,’ where medical records are readily available on electronic viewing screens.”

Advocate Health Care is covering the bulk of project costs. The hospital’s project steering committee has set a goal to raise $25 million of the $247 million for modernization. Lambert said more than $20 million has been raised so far, with a fund-raising campaign that’s still active.

The hospital’s annual gala, scheduled for Sept. 13, will additionally benefit the project, Lambert said, adding that the project is about more than construction beams.

“It’s about the people and the care,” Lambert said.

“That’s what enables us to deliver world-class results.”

BARRINGTON – Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital supporters and staff are quick to celebrate any construction milestone in their $247 million modernization project.

A ceremony on Aug. 26 marked the signing and raising of the final steel beam for the exterior portion of the project. The beam was placed on the top corner of a newly erected 208,000-square-foot building on the north end of the hospital.

Hospital president Karen Lambert said the north building has been “a dream and vision” for about seven years.

“We’ve always been focused on ‘what we need,’” Lambert said. “What we need is private rooms.”

Once all exterior and interior construction is complete in 2017, every patient will have privacy. The hospital will increase its bed count from 169 to 176.

Interior construction began in October. A new chapel, administrative department and temporary west entry are now complete. This fall, the hospital will have a renovated testing center and an expanded gastrointestinal suite.

Larry Arndt, general manager of health care for the project’s contractor, Mortenson Construction, said exterior work is on schedule for completion.

“We started building the foundation for the north building in April and the weather has been great this summer,” Arndt said. “We’ve even been able to pour concrete through recent rain.”

Concert for Conservation SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA BARRINGTON HILLS – The Barrington Area Conservation Trust held a Concert for Conservation on Saturday at an undisclosed estate in Barrington Hills.

Organizers said the annual fundraiser is important for the local nonprofit’s sustainability and for promoting land conservation on a local basis. Funds raised from the event will be used to facilitate the trust’s various programs including conservation easements, land restoration, conservation leadership – publicly and at home, and the protection of scenic area roads, organizers said.

The evening featured the 18-piece concert band Let’s Dance from Huntley. Guests were encouraged to bring a picnic basket, blankets and chairs. The private estate owners additionally granted a conservation easement to the trust.

6 Animal foundation founder of Barrington to open new location Creme de la Creme hopes to operate in building on Main Street in Algonquin

By JOSEPH BUSTOS jbustos@shawmedia.com ALGONQUIN – An animal adoption and animal-assisted therapy center is proposed for a site on Main Street in Algonquin.

The Creme de la Creme Animal Foundation would operate in an existing vacant 1,150-square-foot building at 1325 S. Main St. The building was constructed as a house but has been used as a home and a

business, according to village documents.

Creme de la Creme founder Lisa Petrongelli, who lives in Barrington, said she expects to be able to open the location in about two months.

“This is something we’ve been hoping for a long time,” Petrongelli said.

Petrongelli is a nurse practitioner as well as a clinical psychologist and had her dissertation in animal-assisted therapy, she said.

The foundation, which needs a special use permit from the village to operate, received positive feedback from village board members who are sched-

uled to vote on the matter at their Tuesday meeting.

“I think this is a great business,” Trustee Brian Dianis said. “I hope it does very well.”

Creme de la Creme operates out of two locations, one in Barrington Hills and one in an unincorporated area near Algonquin. It has grown to a point where it makes sense to have an adoption center, according to a village memo written by senior planner Katie Parkhurst.

Now, the foundation uses foster homes to house pets.

The building would be used to show pets that are available for adoption to potential own-

ers and to conduct animal-assisted therapy. It would serve as a neutral meeting place if someone came to look to adopt.

Dogs on site would only be at the site for a few hours at a time, Parkhurst said.

“Barking dogs should not be an issue,” Parkhurst said.

Only cats and birds would be housed at the proposed Main Street location. There will probably be 20 cats housed there, Petrongelli said.

The foundation would have one full-time employee, three part-time employees and 12 to 15 volunteers at the location, according to village documents.

pleting a building renovation, which includes fixing leaks, replacing a fence, putting in new flooring, fixing a deck railing and floor boards, and adding a ramp. The organization already replaced the roof.

Creme de la Creme has spent about $10,000 on materials, Petrongelli said.

Much of the work is being done by Creme de la Creme members.

“It’s a real ideal space because it’s off Route 31, so it should get some good driveby traffic so people will know we’re there,” said Kathy Wiesner, a volunteer with Creme de la Creme.

The new mobile application development course is modeled off an intense eightweek iOS Bootcamp known as The Mobile Makers Academy, which started in May. Tom Bredemeier, a computer science teacher, and Brian Mathian, a graphic design teacher, attended.

“The boot camp was being taught by real developers with real customers,” Bredemeier said.

ware and code. For the rest of the time, they developed a mobile app.

“I love to code, and so every day I got to go downtown and just do coding all day long,” Bredemeier said.

Mathian, however, had no previous coding experience but wanted to try something new.

“We built two basic apps on the first day,” Mathian said.

While the majority of building an app is coding, he said, there also is a visual appeal to mobile apps that appeals to the graphic designer in him.

Barrington High School offers three sections of the class this year, with more than 70 students enrolled. Classes, which have no prerequisites, are open to sophomores, juniors and seniors.

Bredemeier said he hopes to get some of the apps into the App Store.

Bredemeier and Mathian agreed the class appeals to a wide range of students, including experienced coders, inexperienced coders, boys and girls, computer science students and students interested

in any program.

“I’m astounded with the students that are in there,” Bredemeier said. “When they show up in class, they are excited to be coding.”

Bredemeier said he would consider the class to be college level. Since the class is project-based, grading will be done based on the students’ mastery of the subject. Mathian added the course is set up to differentiate for all skill levels, so while there is always basic criteria to meet, the course offers additional “stretches” for those with more coding skills.

“You can meet your own expectations,” Mathian said.

“Kids will be able to make a mobile app (at the end of this class).”

Bredemeier added that completion of this course is something students can put on their resumes. The pro-

gram also teaches Swift – the newest coding language – just launched in June.

Enrollment in computer science has steadily increased at Barrington High School.

About 300 students, or 10 percent of the high school population, are enrolled in computer science courses.

Bredemeier said enrollment has doubled each year for the past five years, and while the split isn’t yet 50-50 boys and girls, enrollment of girls has quadrupled, jumping from 20 to 80. Part of that, he said, is that computer science offers a fast-growing job market with a huge demand for mobile app developers.

“I think one of the big things (this new course) adds, is it really opens up opportunities,” said Julie Baylor, department head for science and engineering.

Many towns are seeing plenty of foreclosures or short sales, especially in low-income areas.

That seems to be the case from numbers provided by Pattie Palzet-Taylor, a REMAX real estate agent in Wauconda.

According to her information, in the Round Lake market, 42 percent of closed or pending sales in the last six months were foreclosures or short sales, which are transactions in which proceeds are less than the debts on properties. That’s in an area with some the lowest median household incomes in Lake County – Round Lake Beach’s, for instance, is $60,869.

During the same time, 20 percent of Wauconda’s and 9 percent of Barrington’s sales were foreclosures or short sales. Wauconda and Barrington have median household incomes of $74,552 and $106,127, respectively.

“There’s nothing in this information that surprises me,” Palzet-Taylor said. “It’s the middle class that gets whacked the most when there is an economic downturn.”

Wellness Place closes, staff encourages supporters to still walk in Chicago SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA PALATINE – Wellness Place will close its doors, at 1619 W. Colonial Parkway in Palatine, Oct. 15, because of a lack of funds.

The nonprofit cancer resource and education facility, which has provided free programs and services to northwest suburban residents for 14 years, by means of private donations, will close due to “projected financial sustainability concerns,” a news release states.

Cathy Schulze, chairman of the Wellness Place board, said the center closes with a “heavy heart.”

“As we prepare for this transition, we are fully committed to working with each and every participant to find resources for ongoing support, and we are grateful for the generous community support that has allowed us to fulfill our mission for so many years,” Schulze said.

Kathy Scortino, acting executive director for Wellness Place, said many resources

will be available to patients, such as support organizations like Cancer Wellness Center, Wellness House, Cancer Support Center, Living Well and Gilda’s Club, as well as area hospitals like Advocate Good Shepherd, Advocate Lutheran General, Alexian Brothers, St. Alexius and individual counselors and therapists in the community.

“We have set up folders in our front waiting area listing the location of each cancer-specific support group in the area,” Scortino said.

Wellness Place staffers are available to meet with groups and individuals to assist in identifying continued support for all participants. Programs and services will continue as planned through September, as the board, staff and volunteers work to “facilitate a smooth transition” for current participants to other available community resources, the release says.

Schulze said she encourages any concerned participants to call for individual appointments with staff counselors, as

needed.

In addition, Sept. 14 is the 10th anniversary of the Sea Blue Prostate Cancer Walk and Run in Lincoln Park, Chicago. Wellness Place staff said the event has always benefited their cause and they hope Barrington supporters will still attend. The event will be from 8 a.m. to noon. The fall sports season has officially started. BHS Girls Cross Country coach Deb Revolta took time out of her busy schedule to answer some questions. The former collegiate runner is a physDeb Revolta ical therapist when she isn’t leading the Fillies.

Sieck: What is your athletic background?

Revolta: I ran cross country and track at Glenbrook South High School. Cross country was for my senior year only and track was for four years. We only had a cross country team my senior year in high school. I also ran cross country and track in college at North Carolina State University for four years.

Sieck: What do you enjoy most about coaching?

Revolta: Having young people reach their goals and have success.

Sieck: What has been your proudest coaching moment?

Revolta: I have had many.

The top three would be when we won the state title for cross country in 2003, when we won the state title in track and field in 2007, and when Rebecca Tracy won the mile at state in a time of 4:49 in 2009.

Sieck: What is the toughest thing about coaching?

Revolta: Toughest part is when kids get injured or sick and they cannot compete. They have worked so hard and then to have it taken away is tough.

Sieck: How do you define a successful season?

Revolta: A successful season

is when the team reaches its potential and the girls are running at their best at the end of the season.

Sieck: Who have been your coaching mentors?

Revolta: My mentor has been Jody Gitelis, who is the head track coach at Barrington High School. She was also my high school coach my senior year. She is the reason I wanted to get into coaching. She has taught me that coaching is more than just wins and losses. It’s about listening to kids and what is going on in their lives, and helping them navigate through the ups and downs of everyday life.

Making college more affordable for everyone Summer has ended, and that means it’s back to school time for families across the country. For those parents who recently loaded up the car and dropped their kids off at college, the excitement of another year of school is tempered by another year of looming tuition bills and ever increasing education expenses.

To take some of the guesswork out of financial planning, the House passed the Strengthening Transparency in Higher Education Act, which creates a consumer-tested College Dashboard, giving students and parents the tools to fully understand the total cost of college before deciding where to COMMUNITY continue their education.

VOICE Another bill, the EmPeter powering Students Through Roskam Enhanced Financial Counseling Act, provides interactive counseling through an online tool each year a student participates in a federal loan program. By increasing loan awareness and financial planning before and throughout the college experience, we can eliminate surprise expenses and ensure students work through available grant and scholarship options to shrink the size of their student loan.

The House also passed two bills that would streamline the tax code, making it easier for families to use tax credits to make college more affordable. The Student and Family Tax Simplification Act consolidates four existing education provisions into a single, modernized and permanent American Opportunity Tax Credit that families can use to offset tuition expenses, fees and course materials. Middle- and low-income families would be eligible for a 100 percent tax credit for the first $2,000 of eligible higher education expenses and a 25 percent tax credit for the next $2,000 of such expenses, providing relief for those who need it the most. The House also voted to reform the Child Tax Credit, indexing it to inflation and eliminating the marriage penalty so families can more easily receive their full eligible amount. Simplifying education tax credits ensures families can get the most savings possible, and students can spend less time worrying about financing their education, instead focusing on developing the skills necessary to enter the workforce.

Obtaining a quality education is key to bettering the lives of our children and ensuring their long term success, and getting a college degree shouldn’t mean a lifetime of student loan debt.

These common-sense, bipartisan bills are a big step toward tackling the cost of higher education, and opening up more opportunities for the next generation.

In wake of the Barrington Community Ice Bucket Challenge a week ago, Paul Launer’s Iron Horse Brigade ALS Walk team has raised more than $50,000 to fund ALS research. The local Foglia Family Foundation agreed to match donations up to $50,000, which means Launer’s supporters will be able to bring more than $100,000 to the Les Turner ALS Walk on Sept. 21 at Chicago’s Soldier Field.Launer, a Barrington father of two, was diagnosed with ALS in June 2011. A group of friends, family and community members join together to fundraiser for the walk in Launer’s honor each year.

Barrington High School has been named one of the nation’s best public high schools by The Daily Beast. BHS ranked in the top 100 public high schools for ACT and SAT scores. Judging criteria included graduation and college acceptance rates, college-level courses and exams, percentage of students with free or reduced lunch and test scores. About 95 percent of BHS students graduate and are college-bound, and about 30 percent of students are enrolled in college-level courses. BHS placed 213 out of more than 735 schools.

Plenty to love at South Barrington’s Lucky Monk SOUTH BARRINGTON – Edging Hoffman Estates, The Lucky Monk brewery and eatery is hidden from plain sight. The nearly five-year-old restaurant is just far enough from the hustle and bustle of the Arboretum shopping center, but don’t let it fool you. This joint draws a crowd of its own.

My date and I made the right choice in reserving a Friday evening table days in advance. Our arrival was seamless – able to find parking without using free valet and being seated immediately.

Plenty of visitors were able to enjoy a craft brew at the bar while they awaited a table.

Our waiter was incredibly knowledgeable about both the beer and the food. He recommended just about everything on the menu and we soon found out why. I’ve grown to rank my Mystery Diner experiences and The Lucky Monk’s food is in my top three – amazing.

After taking a peek into the on-site, 10-barrel brew house, we asked to start with an order of ‘Crisp Calamari’ and ‘Tomato Goat Cheese Fondue.’ Other starter items on the menu included hummus, warm pretzels, buffalo wings, cheese curds, empanadas and fried pickles.

I have no words for the fondue. It was above and beyond what I would have ever expected. Goat cheese can have a strong flavor and this dish accommodated for that by pairing it with fresh tomato sauce and herbs. We each had our own small loaf of garlic oil crostini bread to dip at our leisure. I really enjoyed the dish because fondue can be too filling when it’s solely cheese and the tomato sauce definitely lightened it up.

The calamari was a surprise as well. It didn’t include any fried squid tentacles – phew. “Point Judith” calamari came breaded in rings and mixed with giardiniera – a fun spin on the common appetizer for us hot pepper

A small cup of Parmesan and tomato fondue was served on the side for dipping.

Let’s just say we couldn’t get enough fondue. It was refreshing to have something fresh to dip with, rather than a pre-made cocktail sauce.

Where we ready to place our dinner order? Why not.

Burgers? Pizza? Salad?

Fish? Tacos? The choice was hard. My date went with the ‘N’awlins Chicken’ sandwich. I selected the barbecue salmon.

As you can imagine, we

were well on our way towards full; however, a good dent was made in these meals. My date exclaimed that his sandwich – cajun chicken breast, pepperjack cheese, crispy onion strings, chili-garlic mayo, lettuce and tomato on

a brioche bun– was one of the best chicken sandwiches he’s had in his life. I could say the same for my salmon.

The fish came roasted on a ceda -plank, but tasted completely different than I had imagined – in a good way. It didn’t taste smokey at all. The BBQ sauce really sweetened up the dish and if I hadn’t used a fork, it would have been finger lickin’ fabulous.

Plus, the fillet was still tender and perfectly done. Mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables were menu sides. I chose all vegetables and finished them entirely – very seasonal.

A round of applause goes to anyone who can move onto The Lucky Monk’s ‘HouseMade Sticky Donuts’ or ‘Turtle Cookie Dough Brownie’ after a meal of that size.

We enjoyed just sitting back and looking at walls full of empty bourbon barrels. The restaurant was comfy – somewhere you could stay awhile after your meal. It appeared as though a live band was getting ready to set up.

First football game sets momentum for season “I was nervous before the game, but that first completion really helped me get over my nerves fast. The first play was huge for my confidence.

By TIM SIECK Barrington Suburban Life Contributor BARRINGTON – Fast starts are always key for any game and any sport. Barrington’s start against Jacobs on Friday night couldn’t have been much faster in the Broncos’ 37-0 shutout.

On the opening play of the season, junior Johnny Davidson connected with senior Scotty Miller, and Jacobs had no chance as Miller took it 64 yards for the opening score. Before the offense could even get settled, the Broncos defense forced a Jacobs turnover. Three plays later, Davidson used his legs this time and scored on an 11-yard scramble to put Barrington up 14-0. It took just 31 seconds for Barrington to put two touchdowns on the scoreboard.

“I was happy with the way we came out today.” Barrington coach Joe Sanchez said. “We were able to grab hold of the momentum, and that is crucial when you play a good team like Jacobs.”

Barrington (1-0) welcomed back wide receiver Mitchell Pfeiffer, who sat out last season, and the senior wasted little time to show he was happy to be back. Pfeiffer’s first reception resulted in a 32-yard score, and he followed that later in the second quarter with a 67-yard touchdown reception to put the Broncos up 27-0 at

the half. The senior receiver finished the evening with three receptions for 113 yards and two touchdowns.

One question Barrington needed to answer this season was who would be the team’s starting quarterback. The battle seemed like an even one all summer between junior Davidson and senior Adam Broomfield. Two weeks ago,

Davidson was named the starter, and although Friday was just one game, the decision sure seems to be the right one. The junior finished a first start going 14-for-17 for 255 yards and three touchdowns passing and one touchdown rushing in just under three quarters of play.

“I was nervous before the game, but that first completion

really helped me get over my nerves fast,” Davidson said.

“The first play was huge for my confidence. We have a lot of depth and a lot of weapons on offense, and that really helps me be successful.”

The Broncos defense was also in midseason form as Barrington held a high-powered Jacobs offense out of the end zone and forced three

turnovers. The defense was led by Jake Coon, who had several huge hits from the linebacker position and an interception.

Barrington closed the scoring in the third quarter with a nine-yard touchdown run

by Dumaso Mkwananzi and a 28-yard field goal by Chase Lesniak.

Barrington coach Sanchez was pleased with his team’s victory over Jacobs.

“The scoreboard can be a little deceiving, especially against a team like Jacobs,” Sanchez said. “We played well tonight but still have a lot of work to do. We wanted to get off to a good start this season and did that tonight.”

Barrington will hit the road for its second game at 7:30 p.m.

Fillies return key athletes to girls swimming, tennis teams

Girls tennis The team: The key returning players for the Fillies this season include seniors Caroline Levy and Addie Hirsh, along with juniors Michelle Linden, Anna Donghue and Paige Broustis. The key newcomers who figure to contribute will be sophomore Hannah Park and freshmen Nidhi Jha and Sara Amano.

The schedule: Fremd figures to be the top team in the MSL

this season. In addition to the conference schedule, the other top matches will be against Warren, Stevenson and Carmel. The Fillies already have competed in larger weekend tournaments at Jacobs (Aug. 30) and New Trier (Aug. 30), and they will follow with Downers Grove South (Sept. 6), Deerfield (Sept. 13) and Lake Forest (Sept. 27). Barrington also will host its annual invitational Oct. 4.

The Fillies will conclude their season with the MSL Conference meet starting Oct. 9 followed by sectionals Oct. 17

and the state meet Oct. 23.

The outlook: Coach Tracey Waters-Miller said she feels this team should be exciting to watch on the court. They need to enjoy being part of a team and to win the matches they can, she said. This team, she said, has a lot of experience, and the team spirit figures to be contagious.

Girls swimming The team: Barrington has a lot of talent returning to the pool this season, including state champion Kirsten Jacobsen (junior); state quali-

fiers Emma Barnett (senior) and Andrea Vega (senior); and Sara Kate Capel (junior), Kelsey Holmes (senior), Katie OIson (senior), Alice Han (sophomore) and Morgan Bosse (sophomore). The key newcomers are freshmen Maggie Emary, Emma Graves and Maggie Menso.

The schedule: T h e k e y meets for the Fillies will be their own invite Oct. 11 along with the Lake County Meet (Sept. 27) . Some of the key head-to-head meets will be against Evanston (Sept.

6), Fremd (Sept. 17) and St.

Charles North (Sept. 20). The season will conclude with the MSL Conference Meet on Nov. 1, sectionals Nov. 15 and the state meet Nov. 21.

The outlook: Coach Jim Bart has a lot of experience returning to the pool, and the sky is the limit for his squad this season. To be successful, the Fillies will need to train hard every day. The depth and versatility of this year’s team is one of its strengths. The goals for the team will be to compete for a MSL championship and move up in the state rankings.

By TIM SIECK Barrington Suburban Life Contributor BARRINGTON – The expectations are high once again for the Broncos as the cross country season is ready to begin. Coach Tom Root said he feels this team has just what it needs to be successful and is excited for what this season may bring.

The team: Returning runners for Barrington include seniors Konrad Eiring, Kyle Monahan and Ben Laning.

The key newcomers will be seniors Tate Fisher, Kurtis Monahan, and Andy Gensburg along with juniors Alex Maher and Jack Coombs.

The schedule: Hersey is the defending champion of the MSL and figures to be tough again this season. The Broncos begin their season with a meet against Hersey so they should know early on how they stack up. The rest of the conference season will be tough because if history is any indicator, the MSL should again send many runners to the state meet.

Outside of the conference schedule, the Broncos also will run at the Lake County Meet (Sept. 3), Wauconda Invite (Sept. 13), Argo Invitational (Sept. 20) and Wheeling Invite (Oct. 11). The measuring

stick for Barrington will be the Peoria Notre Dame Invite on (Sept. 20).This meet features a lot of the top teams and runners in the state, and the Broncos can see how they rank. In the past, the Broncos have run some of their fastest times at this meet and this will allow them to see how they compare to past Barrington teams.

The season will conclude with the conference meet on Oct. 18, regionals on Oct. 25, sectionals on Nov. 1, and the state meet Nov. 8.

The outlook: This team can be good if it attacks every race as if it was their last and hold nothing back. Coach Root feels the team could work on their confidence.

This team is relatively inexperienced so it will quickly need to realize how fit and strong it is after a great summer program and need to learn to rely on one another and work together in races.

The main objective of this team is to remain healthy and strong come October and November and a state appearance wouldn’t be out of the question. The top seven runners will feature quite a few new faces who will need to develop into a cohesive and trusting unit. The potential is there, but like most teams they will live or die by the strength of their pack.
