Hingson said working with a guide dog is much like working with a teammate.

“I am the navigator and the dog is the pilot,” Hingson said.

“Two heads are better than one, and that couldn’t be any more true on Sept. 11.”

Hingson was reaching for papers to prepare for a long day of sales seminars with his then-company, Quantum Networks, when he heard “a muffled explosion,” he said.

“The building shuttered and began to move and tip,” Hingson said. “I think it moved about 20 feet.”

Hingson said the building soon after swayed back upright before it dropped about six feet toward the ground.

“I told Roselle to ‘heel’ and ‘sit,’” Hingson said.

Hingson said he tried to focus and develop a game plan

while his co-worker was panicking nearby.

“You don’t understand,” Hingson said the co-worker exclaimed. “You can’t see it!”

“I called my wife and told her there was an explosion or something and that I would be leaving the complex,” Hingson said.

Hingson said he soon recognized a familiar airport smell – jet fuel.

“I realized we had been hit by an airplane,” Hingson said.

It was time to head for the stairs.

“I had to stay calm and focused for Roselle,” Hingson said, adding his co-worker stayed a floor ahead to ensure everything was clear on the way down.

Reaching the 30th floor in about 20 minutes, Hingson resisted a firefighter’s help, he said.

dog,” Hingson said, adding that he remembers his “only real worry” being losing electricity on the stairs and being “stuck with thousands of functioning, nonblind people who would freak out immediately.”

Hingson said he resisted help because the firefighter was part of a team and he didn’t want to hear days later that a firefighter had been injured because a crew member “left to help a blind person who didn’t need help.”

It took Hingson another 25 minutes to get to level one because the stairs became more crowded, he said.

“Floor 1 was a torrential downpour of sprinklers and ankle-deep water,” Hingson said. “It took us a full hour to get from our office to the street and out into the sunlight.”

BARRINGTON – Michael Hingson remembers Sept. 11, 2001, clearly – the sounds, the smells and the lung-clogging dust.

Most memorable for Hingson is his triumph of escaping his 78th floor World Trade Center – Tower One office with his guide dog, Roselle, minutes before the building collapsed into what he remembers to be a “deafening roar – something like a rumbling freight train and crashing waterfall.”

“Good girl, Roselle,” Hingson told his pup. “Keep going.

What a good job, Roselle. Forward. Left, Roselle. Good girl.”

Blind since birth, Hingson is one of more than 6 million people nationwide ages 16 and older living with a visual disability. Hingson traveled from his California residence to speak Thursday at The Garlands of Barrington, 1000 Garlands Lane.

Hingson said he has lived in a world of challenges that many people don’t face.

“I love talking to students and asking them what they think blind people can’t do,” Hingson said. “They’ll say ‘drive’ or ‘ride a bike’ or ‘catch a baseball.’ “ Hingson joked that he knows there’s a lot of professional baseball players who “can’t play baseball.”

Proving his abilities, Hingson opened an office Aug. 1, 2000, in the World Trade Center. Hingson said he learned to go “anywhere, anytime” within the entire complex.

“I wanted to know that if I had to go meet customers on short notice, I would be able to pick up and go in a matter of

Hingson commanded Roselle, “Right, right, right,” before she planted her paws and would not move.

“She led us to the top of a flight of stairs — the Fullerton Street Subway Station,” Hingson said. “She had done her job perfectly.”

After stopping for a water break underground, Hingson heard same roar of glass breaking … the rumble of a building collapsing, he said.

Tower Two was gone. Hingson said he couldn’t believe he had gone to work just three hours earlier.

Phoning his wife again, Hingson said he learned of the day’s terror attacks before he left for his regular trip home to New Jersey.

“I finally gave my wife a hug at 7 p.m. that evening,” Hingson said. “I took Roselle’s harness off, and she found her favorite tug bone.”

Hingson has since worked with Guide Dogs for the Blind in San Rafael, Calif., when he’s not traveling worldwide to share his story.

“If all I do is change one person’s perspective, it’s worth it,” Hingson said. “We can’t let our sight get in the way of our vision.”

ARTumn Harvest fest highlights seasonal works SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA DEER PARK – The Village of Deer Park and DDR Corp. hosted its third annual ARTumn Harvest festival at Deer Park Town Center Saturday and Sunday.

Sports season to be yearlong with mixed peer groups

By STEPHANIE KOHL Barrington Suburban Life Seventh grader Sam Lenihan loves to play sports. With the addition of soccer to the Barrington Community Unit School District 220 Special Olympics program, he now has sports to participate in all year long.

About six years ago, the volunteer-run Special Olympics program started with 16 athletes and offered only track and field. To participate on the Special Olympics team, students must be 8 years old through 22 years old and have an IEP in the special education program within the school district.

During the 2013-14 school year, the program added basketball for middle and high school students. In its first year, the team not only took first place at the district competition in the Division I High School League, it took third place at the state competition at Illinois State University last March.

“I think everyone was really surprised,” said Shandra Nosal, Special Olympics athletic director and teacher at Roslyn Road School. “They pulled together and played really well.”

This year, the program will add unified soccer, with half the team being students from the special education department and half of the team being students from the general education population.

“Soccer is different than any other sport we’ve offered in Barrington 220 because it’s unified,” Nosal said. “It’s something new and exciting for us to try out.”

With the addition of soccer, the program now offers sports opportunities for Special Olympics athletes year round.

Soccer runs from August through October, basketball from October to March and track and field from February

Lenihan, a Barrington resident, has decided he’ll participate in all three sports. He also plays in a flag football league with Barrington Youth Football.

“Sam is willing to try anything,” said Gaye Lenihan, Sam’s mother. “They [the athletes on the Special Olympics teams] want to be just, just like any other child.”

The Barrington Middle School Prairie Campus student said he enjoys participating on all the teams.

“I really enjoy it because most of my friends are on the team,” he said.

Since he has participated

for several years, Lenihan has noticed playing has helped him get in shape, plus he has improved his skills in all three sports, four if you count flag football.

“I keep joining the sports because I want to be more active and I enjoy playing on sports teams, just like my brothers,” Lenihan said.

Lenihan’s mother said Special Olympics has helped improve her son’s confidence and helped him learn how to be a team player.

Nosal said getting to be on a team with the students they are in class with every day is huge for the Special Olympics athletes.

“The benefit is being part of a team and being able to see themselves as peers with the students in their class,” Nosal said.

General education students serve as peer coaches to the Special Olympics teams. Nosal has seen interest in volunteering grow every year.

“They are getting to have more patience and compassion,” Nosal said. “Our athletes are really inspiring.

They are excited about everything and go through everything to the best of their ability.”

The Special Olympics program has evolved and expanded over the years at the

request of district families. In fact, it was the families that sought out year-round sports.

Going forward, the program would like to offer individual skills for basketball, for those athletes who are not yet ready to participate in a team sport.

Special Olympics programs in the district are run entirely by volunteers.

The programs are funded through various grants, and also are supported by community organizations such as the Barrington Area Special Voices, which pays for team T-shirts for all the athletes, coaches and partners of the program.

We Are Carnival boosts community spirit SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA BARRINGTON – Local families had a wild weekend at Grove Avenue School, 900 South Grove Avenue, Barrington, where the 28th annual We Are Carnival set the stage for fun.

The carnival, open Friday through Sunday, was a school fundraiser featuring games, food, live entertain-

ment, face painting, music and more.

School staff said funds raised in previous years provided classroom technology and additional resources for students.

In addition, the school donates a portion of carnival proceeds to local charities.

Area vendors such as The Onion Pub, The Lucky Monk and Cook Street Coffee were onsite to serve food.

BARRINGTON – A Barrington-based business has launched a Kickstarter campaign in the hopes of raising the funds necessary to expand.

Its founders, Kelly Daugherty of Barrington and Jayne Drew of Inverness, came up with the idea for Smashing Golf & Tennis more than four years ago.

The two met on the tennis courts as beginner players with kids at home and just weren’t excited about the tennis outfits available. Many were too short on Daugherty’s 6-foot frame and Drew did not like that her tops would rise up as she reached for the ball.

“It just felt like everything was made for people in their twenties,” Daugherty said.

The two hated the “fat-sucking, muffin top-inducing” styles of tennis-wear that were

their only options at the time.

Daugherty had just had a baby and made a joke asking when Spanx was going to make some tennis uniforms and the two started tossing around ideas.

Describing most tennis-wear as super-thin or too short, the two set out to create their own line of tennis and golf apparel that slims, shapes and is fashionable.

“Our fabrics are stronger and last longer,” Daugherty said.

The line of apparel offers a high-quality fabric that is figure-slimming and provides core compression and recovery for active athletes. The outer fabrics offer styling like ruching and princess seams to create curves, but still pull on easily.

Cost shift concerns Rep. McSweeney Republican files resolution opposing pension changes

By KEVIN P. CRAVER kcraver@shawmedia.com A local lawmaker is taking a pre-emptive step in the event the General Assembly attempts in the coming months to shift the cost of teacher pensions to local school districts.

House Resolution 1267, filed Wednesday by state Rep. David McSweeney, R-Barrington Hills, opposes the idea of moving pension costs of the retirement systems for public school and university teachers from the state to the districts and colleges them-

selves during a 10-year period. Thirty-seven suburban and downstate House lawmakers, mostly Republican David but with sever- McSweeney al Democrats, had signed on as of Friday evening.

McSweeney said he is concerned the idea could come back as soon as the fall veto session starting next month, as part of a Senate plan to rewrite the funding formula for public schools. He warned it also could arise as a potential “fix” if the Illinois Supreme Court rules that a pension reform bill passed in late 2013 to help get a handle on the state’s ballooning public

pension liability is unconstitutional.

“My immediate concern is [a cost shift] could result in massive property tax increases,” McSweeney said. “If you are shifting a large cost, an unfunded mandate, to local government, that would impede their ability to be financially healthy.”

Illinois’ five state-run pension systems for teachers, college professors, state employees, judges and lawmakers have at least $100 billion in unfunded liabilities, with the Teachers Retirement System being the largest and accounting for about half of the unfunded shortfall.

House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton, both Democrats from Chicago, fa-

vor a cost shift. Madigan has said suburban and downstate school districts and colleges have been enjoying a “free lunch,” alleging that state taxpayers are paying the pensions of workers whom he said are not state employees. Illinois pays close to 90 percent of the cost for local teacher pensions.

Madigan had considered pushing for cost-shift legislation in the pension reform bill but backed off after it became apparent he would lose critical votes.

But McSweeney said it could come back after the Nov. 4 election, or in the January lame-duck session when the number of votes needed to enact immediate legislation drops back to simple majority instead of the three-fifths re-

quired in fall veto session. He said one possible avenue could be Senate Bill 16, which seeks to overhaul the school funding formula by making more than 90 percent of total state education funding distributed based on poverty levels. The bill passed the Senate in the last days of spring session and is now in the House.

More than 60 percent of Illinois school districts have budget deficits, according to Illinois State Board of Education data. Credit rating agency reports have indicated that a cost shift could increase budget pressures and adversely affect districts’ ratings, which would increase districts’ cost to borrow money.

Lawmakers return to Springfield for the veto session Nov. 19.

Behind the scenes: D-220 residency checks Staff finds ‘a handful’ of falsehoods each year

By STEPHANIE KOHL Barrington Suburban Life BARRINGTON – When it comes to ensuring residency of its students, Barrington Community Unit School District 220 has a policy in place to make sure students attending a district school belong there.

The school district has a policy in place that requires students entering kindergarten, sixth grade and ninth grade, as well as any new students, to prove residency.

Residency can be proved with a number of documents, like property tax bills, mortgage

statement, current utility bill and more.

These documents must be provided at the time of registration. Until these documents are provided, students will not be permitted to attend school.

This affects not just the student in the grade level requiring proof but all students in the household.

“We have a lot of notifications that go out through our instant notification (system),” said Teresa Reiche, director of human resources and administrative services. “It’s very detailed and allows a parent to know exactly what they need.”

During the summer, the school district also sent out automated phone messages to families and posted a rep-

resentative at the sixth-grade walk-through at the middle schools and freshman orientation at the high school.

As with any school district, Barrington 220 does sometimes have to deal with false residency. There are a couple ways the district generally becomes alerted to a student attending school in the district without being a resident of the district.

One way is when the district is tipped off by a parent or community member of the district. Superintendent Brian Harris said sometimes staff at the schools also become suspicious and alert the district to their concerns.

“Obviously, if we see any issues, we follow up,” Harris said. “It happens rarely in the

district… We have 9,000 students, so it’s less than 1 percent.”

Harris said the district sees maybe a handful of cases each year, which is right on par with what he experienced in previous districts he worked in.

Reiche said when warranted, an intensive investigation is launched into residency concerns. If district officials have the data and information it needs to show a student is not a resident of the district, they notify the family.

Harris said once a student has been caught as a nonresident, the student generally stops attending the Barrington school and the district gets a records request from the stu-

dent’s correct school shortly after.

Nonresidents can be charged out-of-district tuition if the school district chooses to pursue it. Harris said it really depends on the circumstances.

Harris added there are a number of reasons people try to enroll in a district they don’t belong, but ultimately, the district wants to provide its services only to students who are within the boundaries of the district.

“We’re a desirable district to be a part of,” Harris said. “… We do offer some very unique and special opportunities here and parents want that for their kids, but the bottom line is, they have to live in the district.”

HOFFMAN ESTATES – GiGi’s Playhouse Down Syndrome Achievement Centers have always been a place of giving. While brainstorming fund-raising ideas, an 11-year-old with a desire to help special-needs individuals decided it was his turn to give back.

Danny Botcher of Arlington Heights surprised GiGi’s Playhouse Hugs and Mugs cafe interns with more than $100 cash this summer. Botcher and his friends hosted a one-day lemonade and snack sale in their neighborhood to spread Down syndrome awareness.

The GiGi’s Playhouse Hugs and Mugs cafe opened in January at 2350 W. Higgins Road, Hoffman Estates. The cafe is part of South Barrington mother Nancy Gianni’s national Down syndrome programming that began in the area in 2003. Hugs and Mugs offers Down syndrome adults the opportunity to operate a live retail store. As their costumer service skills begin to fully develop, Hugs and Mugs interns are matched with hiring local businesses.

Botcher’s mother, Leslie, a case manager for the developmentally disabled at Mount St. Joseph in Lake Zurich, said her family has long been intrigued by the programs at GiGi’s since the Botchers’ 3-year-old neighbor, Annie, was born with Down syndrome.

“It’s great to see a charity continuing to service individuals, even as they grow older,” Leslie Botcher said. “I’ve learned the hardest thing for those living with Down syndrome is aging. It’s important that GiGi’s Playhouse isn’t just stopping at children’s programs.”

Leslie Botcher said most other programs for developmentally disabled individuals are scheduled during daytime hours and it’s hard to find evening or weekend programs to suit the schedules of

teens and adults.

GiGi University is a free program for Down syndrome adults that focuses on helping participants develop confidence, in addition to health and career skills. The program helps adults hone their interests and discover their whole self, just as any other university would. GiGi’s Playhouse now has about 30 locations in the U.S. and Mexico.

Danny Botcher said his neighbor inspires him every day and it puts him at ease knowing Annie will have the opportunity to learn wellness skills and acquire a job she’s interested in when she grows older.

“She’s always happy,” Danny Botcher said. “Annie’s always smiling.”

Helping others is nothing new to the South Middle School sixth-grader. In fact, it’s what he wants to do for his birthday Sept. 19.

Danny Botcher told his mother he’d like to pack dry meals for children in thirdworld countries with the help of his friends to celebrate the big day.

Other children have followed in Danny Botcher’s foot steps to host lemonade sales for GiGi’s Playhouse over summer. Winners will be announced this month.

The first-place fundraiser will win a party at GiGi’s Playhouse. Proceeds will benefit the GiGi’s Playhouse Hugs and Mugs career center and internship program, GiGi’s spokeswoman Jayne Drew said.

GiGi’s Playhouse will celebrate its 11-year anniversary with GiGi Fest from noon to 3 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Hoffman Estates center.

Festival activities include games, inflatables, a petting zoo, prizes, balloon artists, face painting, crafts and more. Local vendors will serve food. Proceeds will benefit Down syndrome programming. Attendees can tour the facility.

Eggspress Cafe a good place to stumble upon ROUND LAKE – Recently, an email came in from a reader endorsing Eggspress Cafe in Round Lake.

“It is a great little breakfast and lunch joint,” the woman wrote. “The food is phenomenal, and it is owned by a local family. The owner is very nice and accommodating.”

I checked online reviews.

“I live right around the corner and never knew it was here. I stumbled upon this place on my way to Ace. It is now my preferred breakfast and lunch spot,” a man wrote on Yelp. “The staff is outstanding, the place is very clean with a great environment. We love our waitress.

She is super awesome with great people skills.”

Another theme in the comments was the restaurant’s red velvet pancakes plate.

To be sure, the restaurant is not in the most visible spot – at 651 Railroad Ave., in the corner of a shopping complex that includes Ace Hardware.

I decided to go with my date on a Sunday morning, which didn’t take much convincing because she is a certified breakfast person. It’s open seating at the restaurant; you don’t need to wait for a server.

When we walked in, an employee in the kitchen gave us a cheery, “Hello!” A waitress was with us moments later.

I, of course, chose the red velvet pancakes, asking the waitress about them.

“The red velvet pancakes are becoming something of a trademark,” she said. “So are the biscuits and gravy.”

Among my choices for a side were bacon, sausage and ham. My date added that I could also go with fruit.

“Why would I want that?”

I asked.

The waitress chuckled and said, “He didn’t say healthy.”

She told us that the pancakes are made from scratch.

My date chose nutella crepes, with hazelnut and cocoa, with a side of oatmeal, a staple at our house.

Last season, Barrington finished 19-4-4 and won the Mid-Suburban League regular-season title.

By TIM SIECK Barrington Suburban Life WAUCONDA- The Broncos cross country team had a tough week. It started with a meet against their rivals from Palatine on Wednesday and ended with a competitive Wauconda Invitational.

On Wednesday, the Broncos defeated Palatine in the dual which was an emotional occurrence for Barrington to defeat a Palatine team who is typically one of the top teams around. The Broncos ended the week with a successful showing Saturday at the Wauconda Invitational at the Lakewood Forest Preserve.

On a brisk 47-degree morning, the Barrington Boys Cross Country Team competed against 18 other schools, and the short-handed Broncos came away with a third place finish. Barrington had 97 points in the meet which was won by Warren with 68 points and Crystal Lake South finished in second place with 76 points.

Several of the Barrington runners had to miss the race because of academic testing.

Barrington’s Kyle Monahan finished in second place out of the 130 runners competing in the varsity meet.

Monahan’s overall time was 15:32.

“This was a tough week and we ran a few tough races,” Monahan said. “I was pleased with how I ran today.

I had a pretty comfy first mile and was always in the lead group. The Warren runner broke away at the 2 ½ mile mark and I was unable to catch him. This was a good race and I felt like I ran pretty smart.

“I thought the course was in pretty nice shape considering how much rain we had.

We just ran here last week for the Lake County Meet and I actually improved my time. I’m happy with a second place finish in a meet like this.”

Dustin Macuba from Warren won the race with a time of 15:21.8.

Other top finishers for Barrington included Konrad Eiring who finished in ninth place with a time of 15:54.9, Ben Laning who finished

in 21st place with a time of 16:23.6, Kurtis Monahan who finished 33rd with a time of 16:43.9, and Tate Fisher who finished in 34th place with a time of 16:44.2.

“The course was a little muddy but that makes it fun,” Eiring said. “I’ve kind of been out of it running lately, but today felt a lot better. I’m happy with how I finished.”

Barrington coach Tom Root said he was happy with how his short-handed group competed Saturday.

“We ran our race plan extremely well today,” Root said. “Kyle (Monahan) and Konrad (Eiring) carried us at the top and Tate (Fisher) and Kurtis (Monahan) did great in the middle of the pack. We were down a few runners because of the ACTs so I wasn’t sure how we would do. I’m very pleased with how we finished.”

The frosh/soph boys finished in fourth place and the frosh/soph girls finished in eighth place.

Sophomore Robert Tilly finished in ninth place with a time of 17:08 and Jenna Wolfrum finished in 14th place to lead the Fillie’s frosh/soph girls team.

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA BARRINGTON – The Barrington Police Department will be promoting vehicle and pedestrian safety Sept. 14 to 20 for Illinois Rail Safety Week, according to a news release.

In 2013, there were 126 railway crossing collisions involving motor vehicles, which resulted in 27 injuries and 25 fatalities in Illinois when people trespassed on railroad property. The same year, Illinois ranked third in the nation in both vehicle collision and trespasser deaths, the release said.

The Barrington Police Department is planning to cite drivers and pedestrians who disobey the laws associated with railroad grade crossings and railroad property. Police officers will be distributing public safety information for trains and train tracks.

“Please remember, not only is it against the law to stop your vehicle at the railroad tracks, it is against the law to stop your vehicle anywhere within the highway-rail grade crossings,” the Barrington Police said in the release.

Football ‘just natural’ for BHS player

Bye week: Is this the NFL’s darkest hour?

1977 was my first year on the NFL beat. In the 37 years since, I have never seen a more controversial or disastrous week for the game than the one that’s just passed.

There was the week the players walked out in 1982 and didn’t return for 56 days.

1987 brought the replacement games and disgust in NFL cities everywhere. We lived through the Raiders-Patriots “tuck” game, replacement officials, and the game they stole from the Packers to give to the Seahawks.

There were murder charges against Rae Carruth and Aaron Hernandez and any number of other huge stories that challenged the NFL’s seeming perfection and invincibility.

But never a week like this.

With the emergence of what is being called the “second Ray Rice tape,” the sudden vulnerability of the previously untouchable Roger Goodell, the ongoing controversies surrounding Greg Hardy and Ray McDonald, and then the child endangerment indictment against Adrian Peterson, it feels as if the sky is indeed falling.

CHICAGO FOOTBALL.COM Hub Arkush Let’s be clear, not only will the NFL survive, it will continue to be the most popular sport in America and a goldmine for those who own it, coach it and play it.

There are 1,696 players on NFL rosters right now, another 320 on practice squads and about 200 more on various injured reserve and other lists.

Rice, Hardy, McDonald and Peterson represent exactly two-tenths of 1 percent of that group.

The 39 players who began the season on suspension for failed tests for banned substances or violations of the league’s personal conduct code represent 1.8 percent of the players in the league.

I can’t prove it, but I’m betting if you took 2,216 random citizens from anywhere in the country you’d find more than twotenths of 1 percent who’d committed serious crimes, and a lot more than 1.8

When it comes to these types of issues, we tend to have very short memories.

Watching the NFL’s various pregame shows this past Sunday, I was struck by who the commentators among the former players were.

What do Michael Irvin, Warren Sapp, Cris Carter, Keyshawn Johnson and Ray Lewis, to name just a few, all have in common? A lot worse than sex, drugs and rock and roll, and they are the networks’ choices to be the faces of the game.

Everything is going to be just fine, but some things are definitely going to have to change.

For starters, Rice’s

former teammates have to stop making things worse.

Immediately following the Ravens’ 26-6 Thursday night victory, Ravens Torrey Smith, C.J. Mosley, Jacoby Jones and others talked about winning it for Rice and what a great guy he is.

That Rice had allegedly never been in any trouble before is irrelevant. His one indiscretion is inexcusable.

We didn’t need the second tape to know that, and until his former teammates understand that, they will continue to embarrass themselves and the league.

We have no idea what Roger Goodell knew or when he knew it relevant to the second tape. If he’s lying, he will be fired. If he’s not, he’ll be judged on what he does to eliminate domestic violence among NFL players going forward, not how badly he’s botched the Rice case.

Hardy, McDonald and Peterson all are clearly entitled to due process in the courts. But that does not mean they’re entitled to play through their indiscretions.

The deactivations of Hardy and Peterson this past weekend were the right moves. Both players

were paid so they’re not technically being punished.

Even if they’re innocent of the allegations against them, they have to know better than to put themselves in these situations to maintain the privilege of playing in the NFL. The paid time off until their cases are adjudicated is what’s best for the league.

Finally, understand that the case against Peterson is very different than Rice, Hardy and McDonald.

I find what Peterson did to his son to be disgusting and reprehensible and I’m sure many of you agree with me. But there are some very serious, important and significant institutions and individuals in this country who believe in corporal punishment.

Again, as much as I hate what Peterson did, it is quite possible he loves his son very much and that he believed he was doing the right thing.

How Peterson responds and what the league does to clean up this ridiculous mess is what we will eventually remember, not how uncomfortable it’s been to watch it unfold.
