By STEPHANIE KOHL Barrington Suburban Life contributor BARRINGTON HILLS – Haegers Bend Road resident Billy Quinn says he and his neighbors agree that bicyclists are often rude and do not follow the rules of the road in their neighborhood. And those are the reasons he cited for opposing bike lanes there.

At Monday’s Barrington Hills Village Board meeting, officials discussed a controversial plan for the proposed widening of and creation of bike lanes on Haegers Bend Road.

In a memo to the village, engineering firm Gewalt Hamilton Association said that so far, residents along Haegers Bend unanimously oppose providing right-of-way or easements for the proposed project. “[I]t does not appear that reconstructing the road is a viable option,” the firm said in the memo. “Accordingly, we will plan on limiting future improvements to patching and resurfacing within the existing pavement footprint of Haegers Bend Road.”

Although Quinn and his neighbors have their complaints about cyclists, Barrington Bicycle Club Manager Bill Gotfryd said cyclists often are accosted while riding through Barrington Hills.

He said people have yelled and thrown things at the cyclists, as well as running them

off the road.

“We want (the road) exactly the way it is,” Quinn said.

“It’ll get resurfaced when it needs it and potholes will get fixed when they need to… I don’t want the change in Barrington Hills.”

According to the engineering firm memo, a petition containing 438 signatures opposing the bike path, bike lanes and markings on village roads was submitted to the village.

Feedback also was received indicating that neither a rightof-way nor an easement would be granted by property owners along the road.

All but one of 45 comment forms from residents of Barrington Hills were not in favor of bike lanes on Haegers Bend Road. Most of the support for the bike lanes came from Algonquin residents, the memo states.

The next village board meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 25, at the Barrington Hills Village Hall, 112 Algonquin Road.

Under the banner “Mozart ... and More!,” the festival began July 24 and runs three consecutive weekends with concerts scheduled both at the Woodstock Opera House, 121 E. Van Buren, St., Woodstock, and a new location, the Sanfilippo Estate’s Place de la Musique, 789 Plum Tree Road, Barrington HIlls.

The estate is known worldwide for its collections of restored antique music machines, phonographs, arcade and gambling machines, chandeliers, art glass, the world’s largest restored theatre pipe organ, a European salon carousel in existence, street and tower clocks, steam engines and other functional mechanical antiques, displayed within a French Second Empire setting.

The mansion is not open to the public, but those who attend the Mozart Festival will be given tours as part of the ticket price.

BARRINGTON – Celebrating 50 years since the Ford Mustang’s debut, The Garlands of Barrington hosted a birthday party Sunday.

About 30 cars were on display, dating back to 1964.

The Stallions Gate Mustang and Ford Club was present along with area muscle car enthusiasts. The club, which attends monthly cruises and shows, was founded in 1993 to serve Cook, Lake, Du Page, Will, Kane, Kendall and DeKalb counties.

Free and open to the public, the party included a presentation on the history of the Ford Mustang. Several Garlands residents attended.

A cultural affair in Barrington Chinese camp highlights folk arts

By TARAH THORNE tthorne@shawmedia.com BARRINGTON – Dozens of parents and residents gathered at Barbara Rose Elementary School on Friday afternoon to learn what their children had accomplished in Chinese Folk Arts and Culture Camp this summer.

Camp director Ling-Ling Hu, president of the Midwest Chinese Language School Association, said more than 50 students attended the five-day camp this year – more than ever before.

Five teachers traveled from around the Chicago area to instruct the camp while 14 high school students aided as teaching assistants. One teacher visited from China.

Lin said the children show great courage by learning a foreign language during the school year, and when they bridge that knowledge with a summer culture camp, they open a window to the greater world.

Chicago-area students are welcome to attend camp, even if they don’t know Chinese, Hu said. One foreign exchange student attended from France this year, Hu added.

A parent survey will determine if the camp will take place in Barrington again next year.

Since the property was in bid-on-scene foreclosure, Geoff Ommen said the purchase was a little risky.

“We would have never taken possession without looking inside if we hadn’t known the neighborhood so well,” Geoff Ommen said.

Upon purchase, the couple spent a few weeks exploring the home and drawing up plans.

Kathleen Ommen said the garage-entry mud room was great, but aside from that, several walls had to be demolished.

“We wanted to give the home an open feel,” Kathleen Ommen said. “It’s a no-brainer that everyone gathers in the kitchen.”

Now, visitors can enter the home from the front door or garage and have an open view of the living room, dining room and kitchen.

“It’s for today’s buyer,” Kathleen Ommen said. “The home had felt very obstructed before.”

As a professional consultant, Kathleen Ommen said home flipping is her outlet for exercising creativity – and shopping.

“I can take out all my shopping energy on a home that is not my own,” Kathleen Ommen joked. “I always want to do something new around my house, but that would get expensive. Now I can do it on a house we’re investing in for return.”

Working in Barrington real estate, Geoff Ommen said he immediately recognized the investment opportunity on the first home flip a couple years ago because “the market was soft.”

Most area real estate markets saw increases in the number of homes sold and the median sale price in this spring, compared to last spring. In Barrington, the median price bumped up from $527,500 to $563,750. Area real estate agents have said foreclosures are declining.

“You see all these TV shows about home flips and think ‘if they can do it, we can do it,’ ” Geoff Ommen said. “But we are looking at minimum return on this project. It’s not a 25 percent return like you see on TV.” The Ommens said several potential buyers have already toured the home, and some final construction touches, such as a custom walk-in closet, will be completed upon sale.

“I’m a huge planner,” Kathleen Ommen said. “We started by prioritizing our budget and ordering custom cabinets, stone and lighting. I wanted to hold off on a few, more personal spaces until I meet the buyer.”

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA PORT BARRINGTON – The Lake County Art League will take its turn hosting a “plein air” event for area painters from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Fox River Forest Preserve, 28500 West Roberts Road, in Port Barrington. The event is free and open to the public.

League board director Chris Tanner said there will be painting, drawing and photography sessions, as well as time for sharing art and conversation.

Individual artists are expected to come and go all day, with original artwork being up for sale, including much of what is painted that day, Tanner said.

Tanner said “en plain air” is a French expression which means “in the open air,” and is particularly used to describe a centuries-old practice of painting outdoors.

Karyl Shields said painting in the open air is rewarding due to the opportunity to share work with others who enjoy the outdoors.

“If people buy a painting, well, that’s just icing on our cake,” Shields said.

The Fox River Forest Preserve is scenic with undeveloped islands, an oak savannah and marina, according to a news release.

Just beyond the marina is a path into a small peninsula of the Fox River where artists will be able to capture the sun setting, the release states.

By STEPHANIE KOHL Barrington Suburban Life contributor BARRINGTON – A Barrington teenager will compete in the Miss Illinois Teen USA competition next month.

Barrington High School junior Isabella Rojas, will head to Skokie for the competition, slated for Aug. 29 through Sept. 1.

When the Rojas family received information about the competition i n t h e m a i l , Isabella Jacqueline RoRojas jas asked her daughter if she was interested in applying, never thinking she would actually say yes because her daughter isn’t your typical

girly-girl. In fact, her 15-yearold daughter doesn’t wear make-up or even have her ears pierced.

“I never really thought I’d get accepted to be a contestant,” Isabella said.

When the call came in, Isabella didn’t recognize the phone number, so she let it go to voicemail. When she listened to the message accepting her in to the competition, she started screaming.

“I was really excited,” she said, adding she will compete under the Greater Barrington title.

In addition to the Greater Barrington title, Isabella said there are teens competing under the Barrington Hills title and Inverness titles. The winner of this pageant will go on to represent Illinois in the

Miss Teen USA competition.

“I’m just looking forward to meeting the girls and making new friends and connections,” Isabella said.

To prepare for the pageant, Isabella has had to learn to use makeup and walk in heels.

She has also been exercising to prepare her body physically, while also working on her posture. Isabella has prepared mentally by guessing questions she might be asked during the interview portion and thinking about her answers.

Her mother has been a big help, taking her shopping and working with her on her posture, make-up application and helping her pick out her outfits for the pageant.

Jacqueline Rojas competed in the pageant herself in 1989, under the Inverness title.

“I think I was probably more nervous than Isabella is,” she laughed.

She did acknowledge the pageant helped her learn how to present herself, something

she thinks will also benefit her daughter.

“I think her just learning (how to present herself) at an early age is going to help her in the long run,” Jacqueline Rojas said.

There are costs associated with the pageant. Beyond just the registration and entry fees, Isabella has to have a swimsuit, evening gown and interview outfit for the competition.

To help fund her journey to become Miss Illinois Teen, she has started a GoFundMe page.

Isabella remains quite active both in school and out. She is an honor student and member of the Barrington High School varsity water polo team.

“Just being able to do well puts me in a higher position for getting into a good college,” she said of her academic successes.

During the spring season, she dedicates about 15 hours each week to water polo, a sport her father once played.

“I feel it’s a good mix of exercise and having fun,” she said. “Plus, it’s a team sport, which I like.”

Outside of school, Isabella has been studying martial arts at Barrington Martial Arts since she was 6. She is now a third degree black belt. She also is a volunteer assistant teacher at the studio.

“I just feel like it’s a stress-reliever and I just think it’s a lot of fun,” she said.

Isabella has also played piano since she was 8, taking private lessons since she was about 11.

“It’s just something I look forward to in a day, just sitting down on the bench and playing something from my head,” she said.

School is her main focus though, knowing she needs to do well to be able to study speech pathology and music or music therapy in college.

Supporters break ground on Barrington White House SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA BARRINGTON – Supporters gathered at the historic White House on Main Street in downtown Barrington on July 22, to break ground on the village’s $6.1 million renovation and restoration plans.

Work on the historic, nearly 14,000-square-foot facility is beginning so that it can be complete for Barrington’s sesquicentennial celebration next summer, according to a news release.

The vision for the White House is to restore and renovate the property into an elegant and highly functional cultural and community center, with space on the second floor for charities, the release states.

Built in 1898 for John and Julia Robertson, the property is one of the largest historic buildings in downtown Barrington.

BARRINGTON – A Barrington United Methodist Church women’s group is busy preparing for its annual rummage sale to take place from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 3 and and 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 4 at the church, 98 Algonquin Road, in Barrington.

Sale organizers said the event fills up an entire wing of the church and includes a tent full of furniture. The lower level of the church will contain clothing, shoes and children’s toys.

Departments upstairs will include accessories, electronics, lamps, books, CDs, DVDs, computer hardware and software, house wares, tools, linens, holiday items, crafts and fabrics.

The tent will be full of furniture, bikes, sporting goods and lawn items.

On the second day of the sale, shoppers can take advantage of a bargain bag sale where bags can be stuffed with merchandise and purchased for $5, in selected departments.

Countless volunteers help to sort, organize and price sale items, according to a news release.

A “French Room” is to be filled with china, jewelry, clothing, antiques, collectibles and other delicate items.

Sale committee chair Mary Mellon said most anything can be found at the event – designer clothing, purses and even holiday ornaments.

The Barrington United Methodist Rummage Sale began during the Great Depression as a trade between families, the release states.

Walgreens move would be bad news for U.S. SPRINGFIELD – I picked up my vacation photos at Walgreens the other day. And I didn’t hear any French, German or Italian spoken.

How surprising.

I’ve read that the drugstore chain is considering becoming a Swiss corporation. I’ll admit the thought of a company that is essentially an American icon becoming a foreign corporation gives me pause. After all, Walgreens is one of Illinois’ premier companies. It was founded here in 1901 and is headquartered in Deerfield. And now they are talking about moving their headquarters to Switzerland.

Every time that happens, it reminds us that the business climate in this country is not what it should be. One has to ask, why would a corporation founded in Illinois 113 years ago want to become Swiss?

The answer is as obvious as the Matterhorn.

Corporate taxes in Illinois and the United States are too high. Way too high. The United States has the highest corporate tax rates on the planet. And, you guessed it, Illinois has one of the highest state corporate tax rates in the U.S. Business corporations exist to make money by serving people. And when government makes it harder to earn in one place, they will look elsewhere.

When a company switches in what country it will be incorporated, as Walgreens is considering, it still pays taxes to the U.S. government on its U.S. earnings. And it would be paying them at the same rate that it always has. On money it makes overseas it would pay that country’s rate. Seems fair, right?

Unfortunately, the U.S. expects companies headquartered here to pay the equivalent of the full U.S. rate on money earned elsewhere. So U.S. companies that do business overseas choose to move their headquarters elsewhere.

So what’s the solution? The answer would seem to be to lower the corporate income tax rate so that it is competitive with other western nations. In fact, if the U.S. had the same tax policies as Switzerland – or most Western nations – Walgreens would pay billions less in taxes and wouldn’t be considering moving.

The billions saved could go to shareholders in the form of dividends, to employees through higher pay and customers through lower prices.

And what could be more American than that?

The Flannery School of Irish Dance brought 25 dancers from their Barrington and St. Charles locations to compete at an outof-state competition July 19 and 20 at Pettit National Ice Center in Milwaukee. The dancers competed against about 900 contestants and brought home 25 gold medals. The top-placing Flannery Irish dancers will continue to compete locally in preparation for regional championships in Minnesota over Thanksgiving weekend.

Barrington Hills resident Joel Oppenheimer was recognized July 21 at a Barrington Village Board meeting for volunteering his time and services to restore a historical village survey document. The 1854 Lake County document had been found folded in a manila envelope in the village basement. Oppenheimer, an owner of a local conservator business, improved the document’s appearance, retaining its sense of age. The survey was hand drawn on linen fabric. Oppenheimer framed the piece in museum-grade glass to protect it from light for centuries to come. It will be displayed for public viewing in the Barrington Village Hall.

Stop by Johnny’s for a great night out ANTIOCH – As I write this, I’m eagerly thinking about the treat I’ve got waiting for me in the fridge at home – my leftovers from Johnny’s Chophouse.

The menu options were so appealing, and the portions so generous, that I ended up with three-quarters of my entree uneaten despite how enjoyable it was. But that’s OK; I expect my pasta dish will reheat nicely.

I stopped by Johnny’s with a dining companion on a recent sunny evening after literally five other options left us looking for something better. To be fair, some of the other restaurants we looked at just weren’t what we were in the mood for.

Johnny’s, on the other hand, was clearly the right choice 10 seconds after we walked through the front door.

The pleasant but unassuming exterior hides a very tasteful, elegant dining room.

The hardwood floors and dark wood accents around the windows and doorways immediately set you at ease.

There were classic songs playing, Sinatra and Bennett and Glenn Miller. Before even seeing a morsel of food, we already liked that Johnny’s is a place where you can have a conversation.

The Johnny’s Chophouse top sirloin is a 12 ounce cut of 30 day aged corn-fed beef, in this instance served with grilled onions. ordering, and it was a treat.

There was grated cheese, diced tomatoes and a hint of garlic to add up to a delightful combination of flavors, and the pita bread for dipping was surprisingly tasty on its own.

Moving along to the salad that accompanied my meal, I was offered and gratefully accepted some pepper, which intensified the flavor of the vegetables and the thousand island dressing (made in-house, I was told). My companion eagerly devoured a creamy chicken soup and proclaimed it delicious.

My entree was the pasta diablo, after my server suggested I’d prefer it to the tortellini bordelaise. The diablo is made up of fettuccine noodles in a spicy tomato vodka cream

sauce. The menu lists chicken, sausage or shrimp as suggested meats you can add. I opted for the chicken, again at the server’s suggestion. It was the right call – the only thing that stopped me from polishing the whole thing off in a hurry was the warning from my stomach – “Eat one more bite, and you’ll have no room for dessert,” it told me.

My companion had a similar experience with the top sirloin, a 12 ounce cut of 30 day aged corn-fed beef, according to the menu. Served with grilled onion, it sure looked a lot bigger than 12 ounces. I availed myself of the offered bite and decided that the next time I’m at Johnny’s, I’m definitely getting a steak, too.

For dessert, my companion

chose the strawberry shortcake and I picked the chocolate lava cake. Mine was rich decadence, smooth chocolate flavor accompanied by vanilla ice cream. I had a taste of the shortcake, and it was fantastic, too.

A common thread you might have noticed was the excellent service. Our server was present without being pushy, always willing to offer suggestions, very friendly and professional. It’s always nice to find a restaurant that takes that part of the dining experience seriously.

One part of the menu that we didn’t even touch on is seafood, where Johnny’s offers shrimp dishes, scallops, salmon, lobster and crab legs.

Goebbert’s roots lead back to pumpkin patch Player ‘was such an outdoors kid’

By MIKE DEFABO mdefabo@shawmedia.com HAMPSHIRE – Terry Goebbert leafed through the pictures on her kitchen counter one at a time, until, finally, she found just the right shot.

“I think this one just tells the story,” she said, smiling.

She glanced at the photo, where her son, Jake, smiled back from a chilly October afternoon 25 years earlier. Today, he is a 26-year-old rookie on the San Diego Padres, preparing to play his first series at Wrigley Field, a ballpark just 45 miles from his home in Hampshire.

But here, in this photo from 1989, he’s a 2-year-old standing in a pumpkin patch, clutching his first baseball bat.

“He was such an outdoors kid,” Terry said. “He loved the farm so much. His two loves in life were the farm and baseball.”

The Goebberts have been growing vegetables on their family farms almost as long as Wrigley Field has been growing ivy on its walls. Jake’s great-grandfather, George Goebbert, started farming in Arlington Heights in 1948 before his son, Jim, took over the business and moved his family to South Barrington in the early 1970s. Lloyd Goebbert continued the family tradition in 1985 when he moved his young family to Hampshire, where he grows corn, tomatoes, peppers, green beans and other summer vegetables on 600 acres of sprawling farmland.

After the harvest, the yard transforms into a fall destination, complete with a corn maze, hay rides and a petting zoo. Visitors from around Chicago’s suburbs come to Goebbert’s Pumpkin Patch to pick their own pumpkins and enjoy a genuine outdoor farming experience, something Jake had every day.

The farm was Jake’s passion.

Looking back at the photo, Terry points to his other: the baseball bat. Lloyd whittled a 2-by-4 to create his son’s first bat, and Jake carried it everywhere.

“He always had a bat in his hand,” Terry said. “Whatever he’d see, he’d try to hit. If it was a leaf on a tree or a rock on the ground, he’d always be hitting something.”

About the time the photo was taken, Terry thought it would be a good idea to set up a batting tee in Jake’s playroom in the back of the house. She placed a plastic Wiffle ball on the tee and he smacked it squarely, sending it flying into the picture window in the front of the house.

It was clear that Jake had potential, even from a young age.

“That natural, classic left-handed swing,” Lloyd said.

Soon, the playroom couldn’t contain Jake’s power, and in seventh grade, his parents put a

batting cage in the barn across from their house. Even as temperatures dropped close to single digits in early spring, Jake spent hours in the brown, wooden building, honing his swing and studying Ted William’s book “The Science of Hitting” like an instruction manual.

It took five years on the Astros’, Athletics’ and Padres’ farm teams to get to the big leagues. The coaching and the bus rides helped shape Goebbert into the athlete he is today, but without a different kind of farm system – a much more literal one – he likely wouldn’t be where he is today.

After baseball, his parents aren’t sure where Goebbert will go. He may finish his psychology degree and find work in that field. Or he might come right back home and follow the path of his grandfather, father and brother have taken.

Athlete has played varsity since her freshman year

By TIM SIECK Barrington Suburban Life contributor BARRINGTON – This week, Barrington Suburban Life Contributor Tim Sieck sat down with two-sport star Kelly Katis.

Katis shines on the Barrington High School basketball court in the winter and the softball diamond in the spring. Although Katis is just starting her junior year, she has been a varsity athlete since freshman year.

Sieck: When did you first realize you were really good at softball?

Katis: Growing up I didn’t play softball, I grew up playing baseball with all the boys. I realized I was good at the sport when people in the stands would ask my dad, “Who’s that girl?” I knew I could not play baseball forever, so in third grade, I made the transition over to softball and I loved it.

Sieck: What has been your best individual moment in high school softball?

Katis: I turned a double play with Katie Dehnert in the supersectional game at the Field of Dreams. There was one out with a runner on first and a ground ball was hit to me. I scooped up the ball, tagged the runner and threw it to Katie Dehnert at first to finish the inning.

All I remember is the crowd screaming and yelling and getting high fives from all my teammates. It was definitely a moment I will never forget.

Sieck: What has been your most embarrassing moment on the softball diamond?

Katis: The one that stands out the most has to be my first varsity game ever when we played in the Rosemont Dome against Stevenson.

It was my first at-bat of my varsity career and I laid down a bunt. As I was running down the first-base line, I completely tripped and fell. Long story short, I was out, we didn’t score the run that inning, and Coach Peterson wasn’t too happy with me.

Sieck: Take us through your typical day this summer.

Katis: I go from basketball camp from 8 to 11 at the high school, then to softball practice from 12 to 2. My summer nights would vary because on Tuesdays and Wednesdays we have our doubleheaders for softball at Field of Dreams and, on Thursday, I go to night league for basketball at Stevenson High School.

Sieck: What is the best thing about playing for coach Peterson?

Katis: He pushes you to become a better player.

There is something you can always be getting better at and that is why he pushes us so hard because he wants us playing to the best of our ability.

Sieck: What is the best thing about playing for Barrington High School?
