Barrington Fire Chief Jim Arie said the agreement, to go into effect Friday, took a while to plan as the district was most concerned with equity – getting what they give in terms of coverage. The district first received an automatic aid proposal from the village in November 2013.

Village President Karen Darch explained that other village automatic aid agreements, with Lake Zurich, Cary and Palatine Rural, have similar termination clauses (if participants are unhappy) but not the 60-day review period.

The review period is something unique to make sure call numbers are comparable, Darch said.

In 2013, there were 141 commercial automatic fire alarms in the village, west of Route 59.

By comparison, there were 189 EMS and fire calls within the district just southeast of the village.

Following a district request to end a decades-long intergovernmental fire services agreement with the village in September 2012 because of conflicts over staffing numbers and equipment purchases, both entities began independent operations Jan. 1.

The Countryside district has a long list of automatic aid partners, including Algonquin-Lake in the Hills, Long Grove, Fox River Grove, East Dundee, Cary, Lake Zurich Rural, Palatine Rural, Wauconda, Buffalo Grove and Carpentersville, and a working relationship with Hoffman Estates.

By adding to that list, district Chief Jeff Swanson said the district will be able to serve residents more effectively.

Neither Swanson nor Arie mentioned specific communities through which they would still like to acquire automatic aid.

Arie said the Barrington Fire Department is now in good shape.

Village trustee Robert Windon said both parties will evaluate call records as they come in, but he called the agreement a “very good step forward.”

Residents at earlier district board meetings expressed concern for slow fire response times for those living near boundary lines. Arie said he predicts the agreement will greatly speed up response.

If the call is not severe, one department will be able to turn around once the other arrives on scene, Arie added.

Either party can terminate the agreement with written notification.

“I felt like guys would appreciate the service of having a beer while getting their hair cut,” he said, adding that while there are plenty of places for women to go and get their hair cut and pampered, there aren’t so many places for men to do it.

Scott’s customers range in age from 21-years-old to 50-years-old. His clients come from the Barrington area, but also from as far away as Antioch, Chicago and Milwaukee.

He even recently had an entire fire station from Batavia come in.

Scott said with the popularity of the television show “Mad Men,” everyone is coming in looking for classic men’s cuts, like pompadours and cuts with side parts.

BARRINGTON – Soon after Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District trustees approved an agreement for automatic aid with the village-owned Barrington Fire Department on Monday, village trustees did likewise.

It’s been nearly seven months since the two agencies split. Residents have long advocated for such an agreement.

The agreement, to be reviewed by both fire chiefs every 60 days, states the district will respond to all commercial fire alarms in the village of Barrington that occur west of state Route 59.

In return, the village will provide fire and emergency medical service coverage to sections of the district that are

southeast of the village’s fire station at 400 N. Northwest Highway. The district has stations in Lake Barrington and Barrington Hills – on North Pepper Road and West Algonquin Road.

Both entities will continue to respond to all structure fires that occur in the district and village. The district and village will each provide one engine to a village structure fire and one engine to commercial automatic fire alarms within designated areas (west of Route 59 or within about four miles of territory just outside the village).

The district, serving portions of Barrington Hills, South Barrington, Lake Barrington and Inverness; and portions of unincorporated Cook, Lake and McHenry counties, covers about 48 square miles. The Barrington Fire Department

By TARAH THORNE tthorne@shawmedia.com BARRINGTON – Stepping into the Barrington Area Library, at 505 N. Northwest Highway, after 14 months of construction may feel like stepping into three new worlds – one of family, childhood and modern business.

With the 1970s-era building approaching 33 years of public use, library spokeswoman Karen McBride said patrons were demanding two things when the project began in April 2013 – more meeting space and more family opportunities.

The now-complete $8.5 million library renovation features improved meeting rooms, comfortable furniture, high-tech children’s activities and an upper-story business lounge for both private work and group projects.

Convenience can be seen as far as the parking lot, where card-holders can return book and media materials to a driveup kiosk.

Anyone entering the library will find a large, mostly-windowed meeting space with new chairs and an acoustically-enhanced dividing wall that can be moved to create two public meeting rooms.

McBride said the lobby lighting is now bright in hopes of drawing groups in for programs and receptions, using the open space.

Shelves of movies, TV series and music fill the first half of the lower level.

McBride said the set-up is intended to let families browse for a flick together rather than having the children go upstairs and the adults go downstairs. All children’s material has been moved to the first floor for the same reasons – safety and convenience, she added.

“Parents need to be able to keep an eye on their kids. Plus, I used to see several families struggle to get their strollers and library bags all the way upstairs,” McBride said.

Before entering youth services, patrons can check out a first-floor art gallery and cafe where food and drink are welcome.

imagination land of flat screen motion-activated games that get children up and on their feet; a video game room decked out with all the latest gaming systems; a media studio to record music and videos, or edit photos; booth-style lounge areas for teens to study after school; iPads, out and ready for use, mirroring a Mac Store; a giant Lite Brite; life-size building blocks; a Lego room where Legos can stick to the walls; a full-size, playground-style slide and curtained stage for costumes and dress-up; an inground digital Koi pond where children can pretend to walk on water – and all else that is the new and improved youth services.

“Children learn best through interactive play,” McBride said.

Moving upstairs, McBride noted that no office space can be seen. All offices have been moved to the back of the library to give more space to patrons, she said.

“Sometimes, I think people really appreciate those little improvements,” McBride said, showing how a new elevator and staircase located in the center of the building make it easier for patrons to go directly upstairs, rather than taking a lap around the building with their belongings Library board president Don Minner said mechanical systems, like the elevator, needed the most replacement but the overall renovation goal was to retain the library’s footprint without expanding – just “re-imagining the interior to make the very best use of

available space.”

Quietness surrounds the second-level business lounge.

Adults looking for a good read can browse shelves of books while high school students and media lovers can step into a lab work on video or audio projects – much like the children’s lab below.

McBride said other additions are still coming, such as a vinyl cutting room and digital printing station. The library will provide supplies for a small fee, she said.

Booths and private cubicles provide for private work space while three “media-scape” rooms can be used for group presentations or projects.

Users are able to sit around a table and plug in their personal electronics to a double flat-screen viewing space.

“It’s great for nonprofit organizations or entrepreneurs,” McBride said.

McBride said library trustees were keeping the Barrington area population in mind while making renovation plans.

“It’s tailored,” McBride said. “Media students need space to work outside of school and business people can’t always make it into the office …

Charities need space to collaborate.”

Many people come in and stay for hours – families, students and business persons, McBride said.

Library director Detlev Pansch said power outlets, printers and convenience were all taken into consideration for people who need work space out in the community.

An additional gaming room can be found upstairs for older teens or adults who want to schedule a time to game with friends.

Spending for the project – $6.5 million – came mostly from saved reserves, McBride said, adding that $2 million was borrowed by the library board on a “short-term, low-interest loan.”

Barrington residents to take part in Manhattan Island Marathon Swim

By STEPHANIE KOHL Barrington Suburban Life contributor BARRINGTON – Barrington resident Doug McConnell has come a long way from his high school and college swimming days.

Having already successfully swum the Catalina Channel and English Channel, McConnell will attempt the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim on Saturday. The 56-year-old has estimated the 28.5-mile swim will take him about nine hours. Luckily, he said, two legs of the race are downstream, or have a tide push, to help him along.

“The Triple Crown was never really a goal,” he said.

“But it is a milestone and it’s a fun thing along the way.”

McConnell began preparing for the swim this past winter, swimming about 20 miles each week over six days.

“I took Mondays off,” he said. “Monday is my weekend.”

Once the lakes started opening up, he started swimming outside. He’s been swimming outdoors for about a month now – without a wetsuit. When he started swimming in the area, the water temperature was about 53 degrees. He anticipates the waters in the Manhattan Island swim will be in the mid- to high 60s. To put it into perspective, most backyard pools sit at about 84 or 85 degrees.

“It’s going to be really different from our other (swims),” McConnell said.

“Just being in an urban city, there are actually going to be things to look at… I won’t be sightseeing, but the activity will be different.”

Serving as his guide and kayaking alongside McConnell will be Barrington resident Don Macdonald, with whom he has been swimming for years.

After the weather prohibited Macdonald from completing the English Channel swim when McConnell did, he signed up to make an attempt last summer. He trained both

in and out of the pool, swimming and regularly running.

Following a run, he collapsed just outside of his home from a cardiac arrhythmia. Luckily, a neighbor who happened to be a former nurse, saw what happened and rushed to his aid until paramedics arrived.

Macdonald had to have a pacemaker and although he is back to exercising through lower-level exercise like biking and walking, swimming is not recommended in case he has another cardiac attack. He has been out kayaking since March, preparing for the Man-

hattan Island race with McConnell.

“My role in helping him is to keep him safe,” Macdonald said, but adding it is an emotional hurdle in that he really wants to be in the water, swimming himself. “With a little luck and possibly some new

technology… Maybe I’ll be able to get back in the water.”

Macdonald believes his open water swimming has helped him accept his current situation.

“At the end of the day, you just have to accept the situation,” he said. “… You just have to figure out a way to endure and keep going.”

McConnell said it was difficult for both himself and Macdonald to hear that, for the time being, Macdonald couldn’t return to the water.

He called Macdonald a tremendous swimmer, who will be a great asset to helping McConnell have a successful swim.

It was while Macdonald was still at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital that he realized he could still participate in the race by serving as a kayaker.

“That son-of-a-gun ordered a kayak from his hospital bed,” McConnell said. “To have somebody with his experience and knowledge to be a kayaker in this thing, it’s like a secret weapon.”

The various swims also have served as fundraising opportunities. More than $230,000 has been raised so far and donated to the Les Turner ALS Foundation. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, took the life of McConnell’s father, David, in 2006.

“ALS hit me because there is no cure,” McConnell said. “… You just go through years of cascading frustration and powerlessness over watching someone you love go through this.”

McConnell’s father was diagnosed with the disease in 1994, but fought it for 12 years, giving McConnell’s children a chance to get to know their grandfather before he died, something that was a blessing to McConnell. “(My dad) has really served as the main man on this team,” McConnell said, adding it is a bit funny though because his father was very outspoken about how boring he thought the sport of swimming was.

VILLAGE VINE Nancy Long Sixty years can bring a lot of changes to a building.

The “old building” where I attended from first to eighth grade (no kindergarten at the time) was torn down many years ago and replaced with the school’s newest addition.

The only “old” part left was the gym. Of course, there was the new addition where my brother spent many years, and there was the newer addition added on to the first addition. The main office used to be there, and I wondered if it still was in the same location.

After entering through the exit, we drove around the building looking for a parking place. We ended up parking near the Activity Entrance in the newest addition. After entering, we

found ourselves in what was clearly a K-5 building.

That began my search for something or someone familiar. The architects sure did a great job matching the decor of those additions – they all looked alike. We went around and around in circles, wandering from area to area amongst a sea of little kids with their parents and grandparents. I found the main office, and I think I recognized part of it. We found the gym, but it was the new gym. I kept staring at all of the “old” people wondering if I knew them. They must have thought I was nuts.

Finally, we saw a sign: “Auditorium.” Aha! The gym had a stage. That’s it, the old gym. It hadn’t changed much. The stage was still there, the wooden bleachers were gone and the windows where the lunch ladies served our milk and hot lunches seemed to be boarded up. An area was

set up for the band to play, and several drummers were goofing around and “practicing.” (Drummers always have more fun.)

Tables were set up with old band photos on them.

I found an old-looking one. “Here’s Ronny Hlavin,” I said. “He was in my class. If he’s here, I’m in this picture.” After I pointed my fifth-grade self out to Bob, I turned around and saw a white-haired man standing behind me. There was something familiar about him. I did my “do I know you?” stare, and asked, “You look familiar. Who are you?”

“Ron Hlavin.” “Hey! How the heck are ya? You used to have red hair! I just found your picture!” After that, I found a few more familiar faces and actually remembered all of their names.

Some of the current parents were interested to know the original building had only four rooms and one was

used as an office. Contrary to some reports of the school not having indoor plumbing until 1951, each classroom had a cloakroom with a boys’ and a girls’ lavatory (little room with a sink and toilet). So, no “big” communal restroom. Just little ones conveniently located. The two-story building also had one of those tube fire escapes, which was fun to play on during recess but scary during a fire drill.

Pleviak School students will go to one of Lake Villa district’s other buildings, but the old school will not remain vacant. The Round Lake schools will rent it to house their kindergarten and early childhood classes. I think that’s a great idea. There’s something a little sad about an empty school.

I remember the buses going to the west of the school, off of Grand. The previous time I visited this school, I wasn’t driving yet,” I answered.

So, on our way to the Pleviak School open house June 3, we turned into the driveway on the west side of the school, which turned out to be clearly marked “EXIT ONLY.” Oh well. That’s what happens when you haven’t visited a facility for over 55 years.

When I found out Pleviak School was closing and all alumni were invited to an open house, I decided it would be a fun thing to do. Keep in mind, I graduated from what was then called Lake Villa Grade School 60 years ago. The previous time I set foot in the school was for my brother Jim’s eighth-grade graduation in 1959.

Habitat Corridors shares inspiration This spring Citizens for Conservation’s Habitat Corridors program moved forward with its native plant enthusiasts visiting many Barrington-area properties to make suggestions for using more natives as well as earth-friendly maintenance practices. Volunteers accomplished more than 35 visits during that time.

We are inspired by the enthusiasm with which homeowners are embracing native plants and the birds, pollinators, amphibians and other small creatures that use them. People get excited when they see that the milkweed they COMMUNITY planted is actually acting as VOICE host for monarch butterflies Meredith and their larvae. They are Tucker thrilled to see individuals of our declining populations of bumblebees, honey bees, and assorted butterflies using their native plants.

In turn we are thrilled to see so many more homeowners using their fall leaves as mulch, raking them under trees and bushes to provide winter shelter for the myriad soil denizens who help break down organic matter and enrich the earth.

Many more residents are using rain barrels and making compost. Many homes have birdbaths and feeders, but most important is that they are eagerly including native plants in their landscape plans.

One of the homes I enjoyed visiting had a standard-size yard in a nearby suburb. The homeowner had just purchased the home and wanted his new stepchildren to experience the joys of nature – birds, bees, butterflies and all the others. We discussed trees and shrubs he could install, but I specifically suggested a pedestal birdbath in a sunny area with cardinal flower planted around the base. He could dump the birdbath and refill it daily allowing the cardinal flower to stay moist as it requires. I could almost guarantee they would see hummingbirds during the summer. I was pleased to hear the homeowner implemented my suggestions. The children will love the increased activity from local critters attracted by his efforts.

Let’s keep it up. Habitat Corridors will continue visiting homes and other properties throughout the growing season.

Currently, we’re supporting area football, lacrosse, library, and educational foundations.

Thorne: Your menu lists some enticing desserts. Do you enjoy baking as well? Where did these recipes come from?

Alice: I love baking. For years I’ve baked custom cakes and cupcakes for friends and family. Just like my barbecue recipes, my cake recipes were developed over years of experimenting to create a flavorful moist cake that not only looks beautiful, but tastes amazing, too. So naturally, when we were developing the dessert menu for Rock ’N Ribs I knew I wanted to include cupcakes, in addition to the house made cookies and brownies we offer.

We also take special orders for specialty cakes and cupcakes.

Thorne: What’s next for Rock ‘N Ribs? Any specific plans for the near or far future?

Terry: Long term, we would love to have locations in the nearby suburbs so we can bring our barbecue to more people.

Good Shepherd gets heart-care recognition BARRINGTON – Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital has received the Mission: Lifeline Silver Receiving Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association for starting specific quality improvement measures for the treatment of patients who suffer severe heart attacks, according to a news release.

About 25,000 people experience ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction each year, which is caused by a complete blockage of blood flow to the heart and requires timely treatment.

It’s critical to immediately restore blood flow, either by surgically opening the blocked vessel or by giving clot-busting medication, the release states.

gy Chief Dr. Sunil Kadakia said the hospital is dedicated to improving the quality of care for patients who suffer a heart attack and the American Heart Association’s Mission Lifeline program helps staff accomplish that goal through clinical guidelines.

The hospital earned the award by meeting specific criteria and standards of performance for the quick and appropriate treatment of blocked artery patients.

Before patients are discharged, they are started on aggressive risk reduction therapies such as cholesterol-lowering drugs, aspirin, ACE inhibitors and beta-blockers, and they receive smoking cessation counseling if needed, according to the release.

Memory care community to open New $11.1 million complex is filling up

By TARAH THORNE tthorne@shawmedia.com SOUTH BARRINGTON – Memory care centers have become a home away from home for longtime Autumn Leaves director Barbara Schechtel, who is overseeing the buildout of a new $11.1 million residential complex in South Barrington.

The 29,000 square-foot center will cater to those living with Alzheimer’s and dementia, hosting up to 45 residents of any age. A grand opening is scheduled for July 31, but Schechtel said residents can move in mid-month. The organization prefers to call the center a “community.”

Autumn Leaves, based in Irving, Texas, has nine communities open or under construction in Chicago suburbs.

Nearby communities include Crystal Lake, Vernon Hills, Orland Park, Oswego, St. Charles and Bolingbook. Construction is set for Glen Ellyn and Arlington Heights.

Unique to South Barrington will be the first motion sensor vigil system, which is in each resident’s private room, allowing for safer independent living. The system alerts aroundthe-clock staff members of unexpected movement.

Schechtel said sensors will be in rooms and bathrooms to detect motion in the middle of the night.

“The vigil system shows we are all about the quality of our care,” Schechtel said. “We understand the unique needs of memory impaired residents and want to be able to help 24-7.”

In addition to the vigil system, Autumn Leaves communities feature automatic bathroom lights to prevent falls, medication management, indoor and outdoor activities, chaperoned trips, physicians and nurses, group activities, fresh-cooked meals, laundry and bathing, 24-hour visitation, private rooms for family events, libraries, and all-inclusive care.

Autumn Leaves of South Barrington will open at 215 Bartlett Road, near the Arboretum shopping center, this July. The 29,000 square-foot memory care community will be home to 45 residents. In addition, families can book their loved ones for temporary overnight respite care while attending to out-of-town matters.

Sales and marketing director Lora Ellis said all-inclusive care is something rarely found outside of Autumn Leaves.

Residents sign on to a month-to-month lease and families are never burdened by an increased level of care, Ellis said, explaining that she became interested in senior living about four years ago while seeking care for her own mother.

“I saw how important care

is and how expensive it can be when someone needs more and more care – more services,” Ellis said. “Autumn Leaves is different. Families aren’t taking on additional costs as residents age.”

Residents must have an Alzheimer’s or dementia diagnosis, but many Autumn Leaves events will serve the greater public, Ellis said.

The South Barrington location will offer opportunities

for volunteerism, community seminars and an overnight respite program, in which families can check their loved ones in to Autumn Leaves while on vacation.

Regular activities include group cooking, dancing, singing, cognitive games, supper clubs, arts and crafts, gardening, pet therapy and more.

Schechtel said trips area already planned for nearby restaurants and Goebbert’s

Farm and Garden Center but staff will mostly talk to new residents and families to learn what their individual interests may be.

Schechtel’s passion for memory care developed as an Autumn Leaves volunteer seven years ago, she said.

“I love what I do. It doesn’t even feel like work,” Schechtel said. “I would sit and all with residents as they ate their lunches, and through that experience, I realized that I wanted to work with Autumn Leaves and have the opportunity to help more families.”

Schechtel said the South Barrington location is ideal – built in a volunteer-oriented community just 5 miles from St. Alexius Medical Center.

Ellis added Autumn Leaves residents are visibly happy, and that’s what keeps her going.

“When you walk in, the love you feel is real,” Ellis said. “For our residents, this is their home and making sure they feel at home is at the heart of what we do.”

BARRINGTON – Barrington Bank & Trust announced the winners of their Community Scholarship Program Monday.

The bank recently awarded seven $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors of area high schools who will attend a college or university this fall, according to a news release.

Among the recipients was Ashley Villagomez of Barrington High School. Other winners were selected from William Fremd, Hoffman Estates, Lake Park, Palatine, Schaumburg and Streamwood high schools. Each recipient met criteria of academic achievements, financial need,

character and school and community contributions.

Bank chairman and CEO Brad Stetson said the winners are “an outstanding group of individuals who are destined to achieve success.”

“We are delighted to be able to support them in their future academic endeavors,” Stetson said.

A bank scholarship committee was responsible for the selection of winners. Checks were presented to each recipient. BARRINGTON – There are four reasons why traveling is healthy, according to a news release from Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital.

Exercise, walking and exploring is sure to be greater than normal. Travel offers an escape from routine and a break-up of monotony, according to the release.

Plus, getting outdoors and breathing fresh air brings D vitamins. Vacation also can reduce stress, the release states.

Dr. Ann O’Connor-Trauscht, of Good Shepherd, who sees many patients before they are going on vacation or making an international trip, said travel is good medicine.

“When you travel, you put your brain into a place that is novel and complex,” Trauscht said. “Your brain reacts by being engaged and you begin to process on a deep level. Traveling can also be a great stress reliever and help people live longer, healthier and more fulfilled lives.”

According to The Global Commission on Aging and Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies, travel offers the same sort of physical and cognitive benefits as crossword puzzles or museum visits.

A study found that women who vacation every six years or less had a significantly higher risk of developing a heart attack or coronary death compared to women to vacationed at least twice a year; men who did not take an annual vacation were shown to have a 20 percent higher risk of death and about a 30 percent greater risk of death from heart disease; and benefits of travel are almost immediate with 89 percent of respondents noticing a significant decrease in stress after a day or two.

The study also noted that 59 percent of Americans dream of traveling during retirement, and that the most impactful trips are those spent with family and friends.

For many, summer vaca-

tion means travel, which could be by car, airplane or boat.

But for those who suffer from motion sickness, it could be a very miserable trip, according to a news release from Good Shepherd.

Motion sickness is a common problem for travelers.

It can start suddenly, with a quest feeling and cold sweats leading to dizziness, nausea and vomiting, according to the release.

Dr. Rodrigo Bastidas, of Good Shepherd, said motion sickness occurs when the motion you see is different from the motion sensed by your inner ear.

“Your brain senses movement by setting signals from your inner ears, eyes, muscles and joints,” Bastidas said.

“When it gets signals that do not match your actual motion, you get motion sickness.

For example, down below on a boat, your inner ear senses motion but your eyes cannot tell you are moving.”

Bastidas suggests eight tips for preventing motion sickness: sitting in the front seat of a car, forward cars of a train, upper deck on a boat or wing seats on a plane may give you a smoother ride – reserve seats; focus on the horizon or on a distant, stationary object – don’t read; keep your head still, while resting against a seat back; don’t smoke or sit near smokers; avoid spicy or greasy foods and alcohol – don’t overeat; eat dry crackers or drink a carbonated beverage to help settle your stomach if you become ill; stimulating other senses can distract you from the motion; aromatherapy (mint or lavender), ginger candy or other flavored lozenges may help.

“Medicines can be used to prevent or treat motion sickness, although many of them have the unwanted side effect of making you sleepy,” Bastidas said. “Check with your doctor about what is best for you if you think you need medicine for motion sickness.”

The good news is motion sickness tends to go away as soon as the motion stops, added Bastidas.

Good food, casual atmosphere at Lake House LAKE VILLA – Wondering what beer would go down well with a particular steak?

Lake House in Lake Villa has suggestions on its menu. You don’t see that too often.

I’m not a steak person. But my date is. She’s not into beer, though.

On a gorgeous Friday evening, we walked into the Lake House, 850 Tower Drive, which is – not coincidentally – near a water tower. A group in front of us chose to eat in the dining room. Not us.

We asked for the patio. The weather was too perfect not to enjoy every minute of it.

The inside, to be sure, is inviting, with its casual atmosphere – a bar, blue holiday lighting strung among the exposed ductwork. A modern jukebox is in the corner.

After being seated outside, an employee – we considered him the manager – asked whether somebody had taken our drink order. No one had, but we only had been out there less than a minute. The message: The staff takes care of its customers.

Shortly after, the manager brought bread to our table.

And a waiter arrived.

On Facebook, my date complimented the appearance of both the manager and the waiter.

“Our waiter is dreamy.

I purposely ask lots I questions,” she wrote.

Meanwhile, we overheard people at a nearby table talk about Colorado and the breweries in Fort Collins.

My date urged me to expand my horizons beyond chicken and fish.

“You have to get something different,” she said.

She planned to order the lemon-crusted fresh haddock fillet, but when the waiter took our order, she switched unexpectedly to the baby back ribs. I picked the deep-fried walleye, rejecting her suggestion that I meander from my usual path. Maybe next time.

At first, she denied me, but finally agreed after my pleadings – as I knew she would.

Her next drink was a banana nutbread martini. As the designated driver, I stopped at one beer and started drinking water.

I liked my fish plate, and she definitely found her meal delicious.

“Ribs are usually messy, and you get stuff under your nails and you use a bunch of napkins. You feel like a rabid dog,” my date said. “Here, they are very tender. They fall right off the bone. You just use your fork.”

Another perk of Lake House is the desserts. We got the combo cupcake plate, which automatically comes with milk, as do some of the other desserts. How cool is that? That’s the perfect beverage for cupcakes.

BARRINGTON – In this week’s getting to know segment, I sat down with Barrington High School baseball star Jake Petersen.

Petersen just finished his junior year for the Broncos and will be one of the keys to Barrington’s success in 2015.

Sieck: When did you first realize you were really good at baseball?

Petersen: The key is to never think that you are really good but to stay humble and always be confident in yourself. All I think is that I am better than the guy I’m hitting against or pitching against, so I guess I never think I’m really good. I’m just confident that I’m better than my competition.

Sieck: What has been the best moment of your high school career so far?

Petersen: Sweeping Fremd both of the past two seasons.

Sieck: How would you define the Barrington Way? Petersen: That every player out hustles the other team and has a plan as to what they want to do every second while on the baseball field.

Sieck: What are your post high school plans?

Petersen: To play baseball for as long as I can and hopefully someday become a coach.

Sieck: What has been the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you on the baseball diamond?

BARRINGTON – Michelle Jakubowski enjoyed two years as Huntley’s athletic director but missed the competitive outlet coaching volleyball provided.

So Jakubowski pursued the girls volleyball coaching position at Barrington when it opened this spring and was officially approved as the hire by District 220’s school board in its June 17 meeting. Jakubowski’s hiring was initially reported by the Northwest Herald.

Jakubowski, an 18-year coaching veteran, also will teach math at Barrington. She will finish at Huntley as AD through June 30.

“Really, my passion is for coaching and the academic side of things,” Jakubowski said. “I really miss that part of it. Unless you’ve been AD, you don’t know exactly what goes into it. What I’m best at is coaching volleyball and being in the academic side, helping students in some way.”

Jakubowski coached at Winnebago and Lake Zurich before taking over at Huntley in 2006. Her Red Raiders teams were 149-75 in six seasons, and she has more than 350 career victories. Jakubowski played volleyball at NCAA Division I Northeastern Illinois.

“She is an experienced coach whose enthusiasm and passion for the game are perfect fits for the programs at Barrington,” Broncos AD Mike Obsuszt said in a news release.

Andy Jakubowski, Michelle’s husband, will stay at Huntley as an English teacher and head baseball coach. Their oldest daughter, Taryn, will be a junior and was a standout on the Raiders’ soccer team.

“It wasn’t an easy decision by any means,” Jakubowski said. “Andy and I discussed things. I would never have left for just anything. Barrington has great school traditions in athletics and academics. Huntley AD is a great position, I loved doing it for two years, and I think I did a pretty good job with it. I want nothing but what’s best for Huntley.”

Hence, fire protection districts, library districts, park districts, drainage districts, sanitation districts, even a few mosquito abatement districts.

According to the state comptroller’s office, Illinois has 45 different types of local governments. The total is 8,466 local government units.

Take that, every other state.

Illinois has 35 percent more units of local government than Texas, which has the second largest number, according to NIU. Texas, by the way, has more than twice the population of our state.

The report presents arguments both for and against having so many local governments.

Regardless of those arguments, it says, voters have limited control when there are so many local governments that most voters are unaware of their existence.

“If voters are unaware of what governments are serving them, the ultimate purpose of democratic government is not being fully realized,” the report says.

A lot of people can probably name their mayor, but what about the township supervisor? Can you name anyone on your library or fire board? I can’t.

In Illinois, it’s hard to hold many officials accountable because we don’t even know who they are.

We’ve got a total of 231 government entities – or taxing districts – in Lake County. That’s one for every 3,039 residents in this county of 702,120.

Who is watching all these entities? All of their financial reports should be on the state comptroller’s website, so that’s one way to keep track of them.

As for the media, we are only covering a handful regularly, and that’s worsening with the layoffs of reporters everywhere.

We like to have taxing districts for just about any public function – parks, forest preserves, libraries, fire departments, water service.

With the exception of 17 counties, Illinois still sticks with township government, even though most of the country gets along without it.

Last month, Northern Illinois University’s Center for Governmental Studies issued a report on townships. It found that other government entities could “readily” handle townships’ major services – maintaining roads, assessing properties for tax purposes, providing aid to the poor, and running special programs for seniors, veterans and youth.

According to the center’s report, Illinois residents have historically shied away from giving broad taxing powers to any government.

“When the public demand for any government services in a community exceeded the community’s taxing capacity, residents typically found it preferable to create new governments, with new but also very limited taxing powers, to provide the needed specific service,” the study says.
