decision until mid-summer.

“Some sections that are over guidelines now will be at or below guidelines in a week,” Leonard said.

By law, Leonard said he knows another section of special education will be added to current projections.

Roslyn Road mother Teresa Lindh addressed board members for the first time Tuesday, explaining she wasn’t aware of the projections during last month’s forum.

“I’m shocked to see these numbers,” Lindh said. “I have a soon-to-be fourth-grader who is projected to be in a class of 30 students.”

Lindh said her son has focus issues and it would be a shame for him to fall behind after showing a great improvement with smaller class sizes.

One female student, in fourth grade at Lines, said her class was over guidelines at 28 students this year and she often caught herself daydreaming.

Board member Joseph Ruffolo, a 25-year educator in an outside district, said there is no one on the board that doesn’t feel the same way about class sizes as parents and teachers do.

“I think it’s fantastic we have a passionate group of parents that understand how important the role of a teacher is in a classroom,” Ruffolo said.

“We aren’t the bad guy. We are just as passionate and we appreciate when parents advocate for their kids because they can’t advocate for themselves.”

The next set of class-size projections will be released before the June 17 board meeting, Leonard said, adding the game plan is to have most sections finalized by mid-July and all additional hires made by the first week of August.

Harris, whose first day was May 30, has already met face to face with many District 220 parents, teachers and staff members.

The Hall of Fame, sponsored by the council, honors outstanding older adults for their service to enhance the

quality of life in the community, according to a news release.

Seniors were nominated by local service organizations, churches, health care providers, nonprofits, the arts and local governments. Nominating organizations were asked to consider the professional and personal achievements of nominees, as well as their

BARRINGTON – District 220 parents continue to advocate for smaller elementary class sizes this fall as addressed in a public hearing with school board members Tuesday.

The second of two class size forums drew another full house of parents, teachers and this time, a student.

May projections released from the school district show that elementary enrollment has dropped by 472 students since the 2007-08 school year.

During that year, District 220 had 178 classroom sections with an average of 21.9 students in each class. About 24 general education sections were above guidelines by 13.5 percent total.

Departing superintendent Tom Leonard said just two general education sections are projected to be over guidelines this fall, by 1.2 percent total.

Now, the district projects to have 156 sections with an average of 19.5 students in each section, Leonard said.

Leonard told the public, as he did last month, he has “contingency to work with later” in terms of hiring more teachers and creating more sections. The school board has given Leonard

permission to hire four more teachers if he sees a problem with class sizes come mid-summer, Leonard said.

In addition, Leonard said he wants to leave incoming superintendent Brian Harris with flexibility to make staffing decisions. Leonard, whose final day is set June 30, said Harris will be able to ask for more than four teachers from board members in July or August.

Leonard addressed the fact that the elementary guidelines themselves seem to be the most upsetting factor for most parents. The guidelines, adopted by the school board in 2001 – only for elementary grades – state that K-2 classes should not exceed 23 students; third grade, 25 students; and fourth and fifth grades, 27 students.

“We could lower the guidelines, but that decision would have to be made by the community, “ Leonard said.

Farmers Market to begin 14th year

By STEPHANIE KOHL Barrington Suburban Life contributor BARRINGTON – The Barrington Farmers Market is scheduled to open June 19 for its 14th season.

From 2 to 7 p.m. on Thursdays, June 19 through Oct. 16, the Barrington Farmers Market offers fresh, local produce, food, drinks, crafts, homemade items, family activities and entertainment.

The market is located at the intersection of Cook and Main streets in the parking lot directly across the street from McGonigal’s. Street parking is available, as is a parking lot within walking distance at the corner of Grove and Station streets.

Market Manager Judy Bruce said of the 22 vendors at the market, seven offer all produce and, with the exception of Wayne Miller Fruits, all are from Illinois. She added it is a producer-only market.

“Everything you see there, the person selling it can tell you, from start to finish, how it got there,” Bruce said.

According to the farmers market website, the Barrington Farmers Market was started in 2000 by the Barrington Village Association, a homeowner’s group made up of residents living in the downtown village area. With the motto of “Bringing Neighbors Together,” the Barrington Village Association has run the market with the objective of building community, adding to the character of the historic village and increasing foot traffic in the downtown area.

Bruce said Thursday nights are really a happening night in the Barrington area. Between the Farmers Market and Cruise Nights, which begin at 6:30 p.m., people often come downtown for the Farmers Market, get dinner and linger, staying through Cruise Night.

This year, the Farmers Market will have entertainment every night.

“It’s really the sense of community,” Bruce said of what makes the Barrington Market special. “We have a lot of regular vendors and we try to offer a complement of products.”

Unique, fun and entertaining activities for the whole family are offered at the Barrington Farmers Market each week, from June 19 to Oct. 16.

One of those vendors is Peter Grubbe of Middlebury Farms in Harvard. He sells certified organic produce. This will be his third season at the market. He offers everything from seasonal greens to heirloom tomatoes, green beans, edamame, heirloom peppers, red carrots and more.

“Downtown Barrington is growing and I like the location of it … everyone is going there,” Grubbe said. “I like how it’s in the afternoon.

Newly hired Barrington 220 School District Superintendent Brian Harris has some old roots in Barrington.

Harris, 49, was an assistant principal at the Barrington Middle School – Station Campus from 1993 to 1998 before continuing his career in Wheaton-Warrenville, St. Charles and Mount Prospect.

Stepping back into Barrington 220 as of May 30, Harris shared his excitement for overseeing the district’s 9,000 students, 1,500 staff members and 12 schools spanning 72 square miles with Suburban Life reporter Tarah Thorne.

Harris: I enjoyed the opportunity to meet and greet many students, staff and community members over the past week. It was great to reconnect with several staff as well as meet several new people in the community. I was able to visit each campus prior to the end of the school year, which has been a wonderful opportunity during this transition period.

Thorne: How is your Barrington 220 role similar to your former superintendent duty with D-200 (Wheaton-Warrenville)? How is it different?

Harris: Both are large unit (pre-K-12) school districts in Illinois. My role of superintendent will be very similar. The academic expectations are high in each district, and both communities expect great things from the schools. Additionally, the complexity of these large districts is unique. Both are geographically sizable and incorporate several municipalities. I look forward to working collaboratively with each local government in Barrington 220 as I did in District 200.

Thorne: What inspired you to pursue this position? How does it coincide with your long-term professional goals?

Harris: I worked in Barrington 220 from 1993-98 as the assistant principal of the Station Middle School

Thorne: What’s been most exciting with this job change?

Harris: I am excited to return to Barrington 220 as the superintendent. Our school district is an educational destination for employees as well as families because of its extraordinary programs and schools. I am very happy to have this new leadership opportunity in such a great learning community.

We enjoy all sports and attending musical theater. We also are very involved in our church. We have two children – Matthew (21 years old) and Brooke (20 years old). They both attend the University of Illinois in Urbana/ Champaign.

Thorne: What programs and initiatives are you looking forward to executing in Barrington 220?

Harris: The implementation of the new One to World technology initiative will be very important over the next few years as the devices are brought into our classrooms.

It will be critical to provide professional development for staff to use this technology so it has a positive impact on instruction and student learning. The evolution of the Business Incubator and other innovative programs also will be a priority. Continuing to seek and develop business partnerships can provide new resources for our students. Language programs, gifted education and the fine arts will continue to be hallmarks which distinguish a Barrington 220 education from so many other school districts.

Thorne: Describe your relationship with departing Barrington 220 superintendent Tom Leonard. What advice did he leave you with?

Harris: Tom has done a wonderful job as superintendent in Barrington

Thorne: You’ve mentioned you are most proud of bringing D-200 (Wheaton-Warrenville) financial stability and increased educational programs. What are your short- and long-term goals for Barrington 220?

Thorne: In regard to your support of the One to World technology initiative, what do you foresee to be the future of education?

Harris: A robust digital learning environment is critical in a 21st-century classroom. Students need the skills to access information and enhance their abilities to be critical thinkers and problem solvers in all content areas. Teachers also need tools and resources to help students find knowledge and resources in the world around them. Using technology responsibly and cost effectively to make this connection between student, teacher and content will be so important in the future of Barrington 220.

Study finds U.S. allergy prevalence to be universal

By TARAH THORNE tthorne@shawmedia.com BARRINGTON – A move may not bring relief to allergy sufferers. New research shows allergies are prevalent across the nation.

A recent study published in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology found that no matter where a person lives, about 45 percent of peo-

Dr. Darryl Zeldin of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences said allergy specialists had previously thought allergy prevalence varied depending on where people live.

Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital of Barrington Dr. Aijaz Alvi said this study proves

that when a person is predisposed to developing allergies, they are going to develop an allergy to whatever is in their environment.

Alvi said, however, the research also shows what people become allergic to is unique.

‘Moon Over Barrington’ SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA BARRINGTON – The Lake County Astronomical Society brought high-tech telescopes out June 4 to the Barrington Area Library, 505 N. Northwest Highway.

In an all-ages astronomy event, children and caregivers were able to view the moon, as well as other objects lighting up the sky. The “Moon Over Barrington” event was in the back parking lot of the library.

Since this was a children’s event, it took place from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Society members of all ages use telescopes – some of which were built from scratch – to periodically observe the night sky. The society meets on the third Friday of each month. All meetings are free and open to the public.

Peaces Art Studio opens in Ice House Mall

By STEPHANIE KOHL Barrington Suburban Life Contributor BARRINGTON – What started as the need for studio space to work on her jewelry has turned into an art studio where area artists will display their work.

Cheryl Voss opened Peaces Art Studio & Adornments on Monday at Ice House Mall, 200 Applebee St., Barrington. The studio is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and Friday through Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday.

Voss, a McHenry resident, will sell her own pieces, as well as art from local Chicago area artists such as jewelry, wall, fiber and metal art and more. Each month, she’ll have a featured artist.

“It basically started as I needed a studio where I can work on my own stuff,” Voss said. “Then I realized I had empty wall space and shelves I wouldn’t need, so I decided to

Since she has put together art shows for years, Voss knew artists were always looking for places to display and sell their work, so she decided to offer space to other artists on consignment.

While working for a nonprofit, Voss began making pieces using oak leaves. She sold them and donated the profits to local environmental causes she believed in. Proceeds from the sales of Voss’ pieces will continue to be donated to environmental causes in the area.

She works outside on location in a natural area on her property, utilizing the wind to help complete her paintings.

“She doesn’t know exactly what she is going to create until it’s done and it’s beautiful,” Voss said.

Beckway said she is both excited and a little nervous to be the first featured artist at the studio. She’ll have seven or eight pieces on display. She has never displayed in Barrington.

“I try to keep it all very natural,” Beckway said. “I’m working with nature, in nature, of nature… What the wind does is it moves the ink around and I tried to work with that instead of fighting it.”

Tobison in running for award; alumnus slated to replace her

By STEPHANIE KOHL Barrington Suburban Life Contributor BARRINGTON – In the midst of preparing for her retirement from Barrington High School, Nancie Tobison was named a quarterfinalist for a Music Educator Award presented by the Recording Academy and Grammy Foundation.

A total of 222 Nancie music teachers Tobison have been selected as quarterfinalists, and as the school year was winding down, Tobison was working hard to complete her essays and videos in the hopes of becoming a semifinalist. The winner will receive $10,000 for their school, and the remaining nine finalists will be awarded $1,000 each for their school.

Tobison was nominated by a group of former students currently in New York City, as well as Christine and Scott Badskey of North Barrington.

She was notified of being a quarterfinalist the night before she was scheduled to have a complete knee replacement.

Tobison knew she would have to focus on getting her rehab complete and get back to school to make the necessary videos.

Tobison joined Barrington High School in 1995 as a choral director. She started filling a vacancy due to maternity leave and never left. Tobison and her various choirs have performed all over the world, including Europe, China, the White House and Australia.

“Since 1996, Nancie Kozel Tobison has become a legend by building a revered choral program at Barrington High School,” Superintendent Tom Leonard recently said in honor of Tobison’s appearance with her choir at Carnegie Hall in New York City in April. “The Barrington Madrigals and Chamber Choir were founded under Nancie’s leadership,

and she has been the driving force behind an impressive record of award-winning performances.”

Although she originally planned to be a professional pianist, Tobison found the lifestyle of a pianist a very lonely one.

“I was born to teach,” she said. “I was always, as a child even, teaching people.”

Tobison started teaching right out of college, spent some years as an accompanist and then returned to teaching with the Barrington High School position.

NORTH BARRINGTON – The Barrington Area Chamber of Commerce Women’s Biz Net has announced its 2014 Athena Leadership Award recipient, according to a news release.

Ellaine Sambo-Reyther received the award during a May 29 luncheon at Biltmore Country Club in North Barrington.

Reyther is the vice president and director of trust and estate services at BMO Harris Bank.

Being recognized for her work with several local civic organizations, developing strategies and resources to help women succeed, Reyther is a member of the Women’s Advisory Alliance and a team leader and panelist for the “Women & Wealth – Teaching My Family to Give” conference.

In addition, Reyther serves on the board of both WINGS (Women In Need Growing Stronger), which helps women and children escape abusive sit-

uations, and the Wellness Place, which provides cancer support to patients and families.

More than 120 guests had the opportunity to meet all seven award nominees at the luncheon, as well as Dianne Dinkel, CEO of Athena International.

BARRINGTON – The Barrington Fourth of July Parade Committee announced Thursday this year’s grand marshal will be Barrington VFW member Paul Corwin.

Raised on Chicago’s near- Paul Corwin north side, Corwin attended Lane Technical High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy after graduation, Corwin is a Vietnam veteran, having made two deployments to Vietnam serving in Da Nang – in 1966, aboard the U.S.S. Cavalier, APA-37, and in 1970, in the Gulf of Tonkin, aboard the U.S.S. Bainbridge,

DLGN-25, according to a news release from the committee.

Corwin moved to Barrington in 1996, where he is an active member of Barrington VFW Post 7706. Corwin is a trustee and responsible for organizing many annual events such as Patriot’s Pen, Poppy Day, the Memorial Day parade and Veteran’s Day ceremonies.

The release stated the committee feels this year’s Fourth of July Parade theme, “a Star Spangled Salute,” is well deserved by Corwin.

He married his wife, Milly, 37 years ago. He also is an active member of St. Anne’s church, according to the release.

This year’s Fourth of July Parade will be held at 10 a.m.

Work needed to fix VA hospital system Over the past several weeks, disturbing reports have emerged of widespread mismanagement at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs which resulted in shockingly poor treatment of our veterans at facilities across the country, including at Chicagoland’s own Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital.

The VA scandal came into sharp focus this past week when the VA Inspector General confirmed suspicions of “systemic” delayed medical care and wait list fraud throughout the VA health system. Manipulating waiting lists enabled hospitals to circumvent the VA mandate where patients receive care within 14 days of submitting a request, which in turn yielded successful performance reviews and millions of dollars in bonuses for VA management officials. The IG’s report also found veterans at the Phoenix VA experienced average wait times of 114 days for primary care – nearly five times longer than what was officially reported – and 1,700 veterans were kept off waiting lists all together.

Since the scandal broke, the VA reportedly has expanded its investigation from 10 to 42 medical facilities nationwide. While the Department is not disclosing which facilities are under investigation, I hope and expect they will look into allegations of waiting lists and improper delays at Hines VA Hospital, as well as claims veterans received informational briefings and ingroup general consultations instead of necessary medical care, again a concerted effort to cook the books instead of meeting the needs of veterans.

Recently, the House passed the VA Management Accountability Act to give Department leaders every possible tool to improve management and hold their team responsible for delivering high-quality care to our nation’s veterans or else face termination. This legislation gives the VA secretary the legal authority to demote or fire senior department executives who are not fulfilling their responsibilities. The Senate should immediately take up this bill so we can send it to the president without delay. Sweeping changes are needed to eliminate institutional corruption and make the VA work again, and House Republicans are committed to making this right for our veterans and their families.

North Barrington School students planted two Catalpa trees May 30 in honor of retiring teachers Donna Lebda and Prabha Lockwood, who have been educators for the Barrington school district for more than 30 years. The trees were gifted by the North Barrington School PTO. Fifth-grade classes also planted their class gift of a sugar maple tree. Each child wrote a wish or goal on a slip of paper and then placed it at the roots of the tree.

The Barrington High School boys’ track and field team has concluded its best season in five years – winning their postseason contests in IHSA regionals and sectionals. The team sent several members to state finals May 30 and 31 where BHS placed 12th in the state. Way to go!

Choice is theme at Gurnee restaurant GURNEE – A few years ago, I attended a company banquet. We had a choice of steak or chicken. I was alone in ordering chicken.

Recently, my date wanted to go to Stevens’ Steaks of Gurnee, whose slogan is “A great place for steaks.” I agreed, although a steakhouse is rarely my first choice.

When we walked in about 7 p.m. on a Saturday, the restaurant was nearly packed.

One room contained a wall of wine bottles. On the other side was a “Cheers”-type bar, with strings of white holiday lights hanging overhead. No sign of the Stevens version of Norm, the beer-guzzling accountant on the show.

Can you come into Stevens in jeans and a T-shirt? Sure.

That’s pretty much the case anywhere these days.

But at Stevens, you can fancy it up without calling attention to yourself. One couple walked in while we were eating – she was wearing a dress and heels, he was in dress pants and a tie. They hung onto each other’s every word, constantly smiling and looking into each other’s eyes.

We were immediately taken to a table near the front door, even though we arrived 25 minutes before our reservation time. The lighting was low – a dinner ambience, as my date said.

“If you have any questions, feel free to ask,” our server told us.

He was knowledgeable about the restaurant’s offerings. According to Stevens’ website, servers must have a minimum of 2 years’ experience in the food and beverage industry “with strength in wine knowledge and white table cloth service. Mostly importantly, you need to know how to smile!”

For an appetizer, we chose Stevens caprese, made up of mozzarella, plum tomatoes, basil, olives, among other ingredients.

My date’s reaction to her plate: “Hmmmmmm...,” a sentiment she repeated twice more, sounding like celebrity chef Rachael Ray. “Is everything OK?” the server asked.

With cake that good, forgiveness is preferred.

Faire grows out of hope for Africa Garden & Antique Faire to help Hand of Hope nonprofit

By TARAH THORNE tthorne@shawmedia.com BARRINGTON – Area volunteers are celebrating several years of sending hope to a land thousands of miles away.

Each year, Hands of Hope, a Barrington nonprofit, gathers hundreds of volunteers and about 1,500 guests to take part in a two-day estate, garden and shopping tour to raise money for women and children in Africa.

This year’s Barrington Country Garden & Antique Faire will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday in several Barrington area locations. Shuttle buses, departing every 15 minutes from Barrington High School, 616 W. Main St. (Friday), and 800 Hart Road (Saturday), will transport guests to tours of three private estates.

Barrington Hills resident Vicky Wauterlek started Hands of Hope in 1999. Wauterlek has since been dedicated to promoting education, economic development, clean drinking water and health services in Africa.

Having served as the women’s ministries director at the Village Church of Barrington, Wauterlek said her journey in Africa began when she led a group of seven church women on a trip to Nigeria.

“This first trip really opened my eyes to the thirdworld reality of extreme poverty, childhood malnutrition, a lack of clean water, illness, and little education or economic development,” Wauterlek said.

“I thought women should be able to have a global impact, so we brainstormed as a group to find ways to help,” Wauterlek said. “Sure, we have enough problems in our own country, but there are resources for families to find help. I saw a completely different level of poverty in Africa.”

After gathering more area women, including Claudia Er-

ickson, of Cary, Wauterlek has been able to focus her attention on a very small, remote part of the Western Provence of Vicky Wauterlek Zambia.

Hands of Hope has funded about 60 clean water wells in Zambia and 20 wells in Uganda since 1999, as well as Claudia one clinic and Erickson three primary schools in Zambia. The organization is negotiating for a secondary school to be built in Zambia and is also in the midst of piloting a community garden project where over the course of two years, about hundreds of farm families will be taught simple irrigation, fertilization and planting skills.

Wauterlek said she has already seen a profound change in the area’s living conditions after starting a million-dollar loan portfolio to further economic growth in the region.

“The poor have been able to borrow money to start their own business, babies aren’t dying from malnutrition, men aren’t missing work from illness and women aren’t walking two to four miles – up to three times per day – for clean water,” Wauterlek said, adding that the price of food has dropped about 30 percent in the area ever since Hands of Hope purchased a truck to help transport produce from remote village gardens to local markets.

“Families are now able to put food on their own table and sell what is left over for profit,” Wauterlek said.

Hands of Hope has raised over $4.5 million since its beginning and now generates about $500,000 each year. The idea for an annual Faire fundraiser came from several women who

“Barrington knows how to garden,” Wauterlek said. “I enjoy gardening myself and knew so many people who like working with furniture, cooking, creating flower arrangements, making music – you name it.”

Erickson has been active with Hands of Hope for about five years, having already volunteered in Africa twice. She leaves for her third trip at the end of June.

Hands of Hope built a well outside a school in Mawawa, Zambia, in honor of Erickson’s daughter who passed away from severe juvenile diabetes.

Wauterlek said the well now serves 500 to 600 children who had never before had access to clean water during their school day.

Acknowledging the importance of clean water, Erickson said she would not have been able to spend time with her daughter beyond her 10th

birthday if she had been born in Africa with her diagnosis.

“The people in these villages live in five-foot huts, on sandy ground, with little access to water,” Erickson said. “They eat mostly corn meal mush and cook outside with kettles.”

Erickson said just $5,000 can buy one well that will provide enough water for a village of 800 people – for a lifetime.

Focusing on a lifetime of self sustainability, Wauterlek said water goes hand-in-hand with education and economic development.

“We work hard to make sure our projects continue into the future,” Wauterlek said.

“School are built to educate children for generations, wells will provide clean water to these communities for years, and the loan portfolio will continue to grow the rural economy.”

Hands of Hope organizes several smaller events throughout the year to raise funds for the same mission, Wauterlek said.

Looking ahead, Erickson said she would ideally like to see another town duplicate what Barrington is doing with Hands of Hope or recruit area schools to adopt wells for children abroad.

‘Biggest sleepover in Barrington history’ SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA BARRINGTON – Eleanor McDonnell, Relay for Life of Barrington event chairwoman and North Barrington resident, spends much of her year, every year, preparing for a cancer research fundraiser walk at Barrington High School, 616 W. Main St, Barrington.

Barrington Relay teams raised more than $1 million for the American Cancer Society in the past four years, according to McDonnell.

Area students, businesses and community groups create teams to walk and fundraise. This year’s big event was Friday and Saturday. McDonnell called it the “biggest sleepover in Barrington history” as teams camped out on the Barrington High School track, taking turns walking laps.

The idea behind the event is cancer never sleeps, McDonnell said, adding one out of every two men and one out of every three women will be affected by cancer in their lifetime.

Celebrating more birthdays, light food and dessert was available for purchase on site as the event kicked off Friday evening. A long list of entertainment included the annual Mr. Barrington Contest, a timed fashion creation tournament based off the hit TV show Project Runway, glow in the dark Zumba, cheerleading and choir performances, miniraces, a luminary ceremony, various bands, yoga and breakfast.

She ended a long at-bat against Barrington pitcher Keenan Dolezal by cranking a two-run homer way over the left field wall.

“I knew that she’s a great pitcher, and I knew that I was going to have to keep battling pitches until I got the one that I wanted,” Newport said. “And when I did, I just kind of took advantage of it.”

Barrington took the lead back on a Rachel MacDonald solo home run in the third, and after holding the DeKalb offense back for three innings, they added to it in the sixth.

Poor defense allowed the Fillies to get in scoring position, and three straight batters knocked in a run to make it 6-2.
