Police and the Barrington 220 School District give these tips to parents:

• Talk with your student and set guidelines on appropriate use of their phones.

This means no inappropriate texts or embarrassing photos or videos. Photos and videos have lasting effects when shared via social media.

• Tell your teen that sexually explicit material of any kind is not allowed. Have your child “friend” you or allow you into his or her social media circle (Facebook, Instagram, KIK, etc.) This will allow you to monitor for questionable activity.

• While your student may not think it is a good idea, you must look through their phone and monitor usage.

If the device requires a pass code, they should provide you with access.

• Establish real consequenc-

es when parental rules or boundaries are broken and enforce them. A parent can cancel or suspend access to cellphone services if a child does not follow established rules.

• Teens should always think about the consequences of taking, sending or forwarding a sexual picture of someone underage, even if it is of themselves. Students can be removed from sports teams, face humiliation, lose educational opportunities and get in trouble with law enforcement.

• Teens should never take images of themselves that they would not want everyone – classmates, teachers, family members or employers – to see.

• Before hitting send, teens must know they cannot

Barrington 220 spokesman Jeff Arnett said the sexually inappropriate images of both male and female students were taken outside of school and brought to administrators’ attention the week of April 1.

School officials originally said all images were retrieved and deleted from the students’ cellphone devices with the help of police.

However, Arnett confirmed Friday that the first offender had again showed a sexually inappropriate image to a classmate April 28.

Dorn said the offender had shown a classmate images of “two more victims” on his cell-

phone.

Arnett said once the classmate became aware of the offense, they brought it to the attention of school administrators who then alerted the police.

“The second offense added to the severity and urgency of the original police investigation and eventual charges by the state’s attorney,” Arnett said.

The subsequent offense occurred with a new cellphone, presumably provided by the family after the cellphone involved in the original offense had been confiscated by police, Arnett said.

control where an image may travel. When it is sent to a boyfriend or girlfriend, it could easily end up with other friends, and their friends, and their friends.

• If a person forwards a sexual image of someone underage, that recipient is as responsible for that image as the original sender. A distributor could face child pornography charges, go to jail and be required to register as a sex offender.

• Teens must report any nude pictures they receive on a technology device to a trusted adult such as a parent or a school counselor. They should not delete the message. Instead, they should involve parents or guardians, teachers or school counselors immediately.

Arnett said the images found on the new cellphone had not been seen before.

They were shown to another student on the cellphone’s screen – not distributed electronically as in the first incident, Arnett said.

Arnett could not confirm whether one or both students are presently in school due to confidentiality rules, but further disciplinary action is being considered, he said.

Dorn said he does not foresee more students being charged in this case but “the case is ongoing in the sense of helping victims.

BARRINGTON – Barrington 220 school administrators are speaking out this week as two 14-year-old, male Station Middle School students have been charged with multiple counts of possessing and disseminating child pornography.

The first offender, arrested April 30, had disseminated sexually explicit videos and photographs March 30. He repeated a similar offense April 28, according to Barrington Police Chief David Dorn.

“Clearly the school’s disciplinary action and pending police consequences were not enough to deter him from doing it again,” Dorn said.

The second offender, arrested May 1, transmitted sexually explicit photographs and was in possession of similar video April 2, according to police.

Police said the students have been released to family members, but further disciplinary action could result both in juvenile courts and in the school district.

Dorn said once the two offenders received the original sexually explicit material, they redistributed it to a larger group of classmates by way of text message.

“There were far more than five students involved,” Dorn said. “It was in no way a small circle of students who received the images.”

Barrington 220 Superintendent Tom Leonard said a Class 2 felony could result in this case.

“These students’ futures may be forever stamped by the careless use of an app, the tease of a text message and the unthinking post of an indecent photo,” Leonard said.

Arnett said this is not the first time sexting has surfaced within Barrington schools, and although middle and high school students are “regularly taught about safe online behaviors,” the district is considering introducing “age-appropriate lessons” on sexting in upper elementary grades.

“If anything, this incident will lead to sexting and internet dangers being addressed at a younger age, perhaps to fourth- and fifth-graders who use cellphones on their bus rides to and from school,” Arnett said.

Leonard, too, said the “gravity of sexting” must be a community-wide concern because the issue is “not just isolated to middle and high school students.”

“As smart phones become more prevalent and popular with grade-school children, instances of inappropriate use are surfacing among younger ages to the point all parents should be mindful of dangers,” Leonard said.

Internet safety specialist Melissa Hemzacek of the Illinois Attorney General’s HighTech Crime Bureau will address Barrington 220 parents at 6:30 p.m. May 20 at Station Middle School, 215 Eastern Ave. in Barrington. The event is open to Barrington 220 parents of allaged students.

A parent coffee and panel discussion will be held the following morning, at 9 a.m. May 21, in the Guidance Resource Center at Barrington High School, 616 W Main St., in Barrington. This event will cover a more in-depth conversation about the topic of internet safety and sexting.

By STEPHANIE KOHL Barrington Suburban Life Contributor BARRINGTON – Although their days start early, it is often well into the evening before things calm down enough for Cindy Kalogeropoulos and her daughter Mary Gorr to chat with each other.

Kalogeropoulos is principal of Grove Avenue Elementary, 900 S. Grove Ave., Barrington, and Gorr followed in her mother’s education footsteps and is principal of Westbrook School for Young Learners, 103 S. Busse Road, Mount Prospect.

As Mother’s Day approaches, the two discussed their shared passion for teaching.

“I call her Grove phone number before I call her cell or house, even on the weekends,” Gorr said.

The two often turn to each other for ideas and advice.

Although it would be easy to assume mom would teach daughter more than the other way around, Kalogeropoulos disagrees.

“I see wisdom in her and it’s something I relish,” Kalogeropoulos said.

Kalogeropoulos’ pursuit of education began when she was a child. She lived across the street from the school she attended, and would often head over on Sundays to see if she could help the teachers with anything. At the beginning of the school year, she loved helping the teachers set up their classrooms.

She began in education in 1972 and has been a principal since the young age of 29. She spent five years as a principal in Buffalo Grove and has been principal at Grove Avenue Elementary for 29 years. She plans to retire at the end of the 2015-16 school year.

It’s not just Kalogeropoulos that has spent a lot of time at Grove, though. As a working mother, she would often bring her children back to school with her on nights or weekends when she had work to do.

“I definitely grew up in my

mom’s school,” Gorr said. “It was like my second home.”

Kalogeropoulos said she would load up her three kids, their bikes, roller skates and toys to play at the school.

“I would roller skate up and down the hallways after preschool,” Gorr said. “I loved helping teachers. We put on plays in the gym.”

Kalogeropoulos said of her three children, Gorr probably spent the most time at the school. She even still comes back regularly to complete murals and artistic bulletin boards for her mom’s school.

“We do lots of collaborat-

ing and have lots of conversations,” Kalogeropoulos said.

Gorr has been in education for eight years and has been a principal for three. Like her mother, she became principal at a young age.

“I could only hope to have a parallel career to hers,” Gorr said.

However, while Kalogeropoulos always knew she wanted to go into education, the path wasn’t so clear for Gorr.

In fact, when she first entered college, she thought she might go the legal route. But Grove Avenue Elementary intervened. When Gorr was home

for winter break her freshman year of college, she filled in as a one-on-one assistant for a student in need of help.

“That was the time when she made the decision, ‘I know what I want to do with my life and that’s be a teacher,’ ” Kalogeropoulos said.

“I felt so excited about every day and those were the moments I became aware maybe I wanted to do that with my life,” Gorr added. “It’s been unbelievable to have my mom as a role model.”

Gorr has admired her mother’s career and Kalogeropoulos’ ability to really set down roots, effect change and influence children’s lives in her career, especially at Grove.

“She gives me advice all the time,” Gorr said. “I constantly am calling her. She’s never afraid to challenge me to think differently about a situation.

She’s just someone that really has challenged me to push myself.”

BARRINGTON – Barrington Middle School Prairie Campus students presented “Annie – The Musical” May 1 through May 4 at the school, 40 East Dundee Road in Barrington.

The show was directed

by Prairie choral director Carol Sesso, who will be retiring at the end of this year. “Annie” was her last show. Sesso has been at Prairie for seven years.

Ellen Werksman, owner and director of Dancewerks in Barrington, choreographed the performances.

More than 70 people – Prairie students in grades six to eight – were cast, including Holly Snyder and Julia Stegvik who played Annie and several more lead roles such as orphans, Hooverville persons, dog catchers, dancers and the Boylan Sisters.

The students had been practicing since January.

Parents question school board

By TARAH THORNE tthorne@shawmedia.com BARRINGTON – Barrington 220 school board members sat down to a full house and much public comment at their regular meeting April 29. A technology lease-to-own plan was approved, but parents were more concerned with elementary class size projections for fall.

The Barrington 220 school district released its latest enrollment projections April 14.

At that point, an estimated 3,098 elementary students would attend the eight area schools. The average class size would be 19 students with the highest being 26 students in one third-grade class at Countryside School.

Guidelines set by board members several years ago state third-grade classes should have no more than 25 students; grades 4 and 5 with no more than 27 students; and K to grade 2 with no more than 23 students.

Tower Lakes resident Mike Galvan has started a parent petition at www.change.org to keep district class sizes at guidelines. Galvan, a father of three North Barrington School children, was present Tuesday to address board members.

“I would like to see a mandate for class guidelines; see board meetings streamed live; and know the actual final costs of duel-language and technology programs,” Galvan said.

“And I’d like to stop advocating like this every single year.

It gets exhausting.”

Galvan said he is unhappy with the accountably and transparency of the school board.

Barrington 220 President Brian Battle told Galvan and other parents the board has a “shared interest” and “always encourages parents to advocate for their kids.”

Other parents questioned the district’s extended services program, where students are selected to be pulled out of their class for advanced reading or mathematics.

“She’s currently in a class with 24 students,” Hegner said. “It’s hard to tell her she’s ‘just not good enough.’”

Hegner and other parents said re-structuring the extended services program may alleviate large class sizes.

Departing superintendent Tom Leonard encouraged parents to wait for more solid numbers to be available mid-summer. Board member Penny Kazmier said elementary teachers were added to the district as late as the third week of August last year.

The equivalent of 11 full-time district elementary teachers were laid off in March when the school board was planning its budget and saw elementary enrollment to be on a 14 percent decline since 2009. District officials have explained the early action is a state requirement intended to give teachers enough notice and that teachers may be hired or re-hired as enrollment numbers become more known.

There are 156 sections of district elementary classes and 16 classrooms available should additional sections be needed, Barrington 220 spokesman Jeff Arnett said.

“The only class projected to be above guidelines is only above by one student,” Arnett added.

n light of National School Nurse Day on May 8, Barrington 220 nursing supervisor Eva Detloff told Barrington Suburban Life reporter Tarah Thorne more about her career.

Detloff has been a district employee for 14 years.

Thorne: What are your primary duties?

Detloff: School nurses are a vital link for the health needs of children. In general, I facilitate the development and administration of school nursing services through health education and promotion, nutritional services, a healthy school environment, family and community partnerships, professional development, staff evaluations, data collection and analysis, committees, keeping abreast of legal issues and laws, enforcing communicable disease prevention, student advocacy and more.

Thorne: What led you to the nursing career? What past experience do you have?

Detloff: I am a service-oriented person and enjoy caring for others. My decision to specialize in pediatric nursing was made while I worked weekends as a certified nursing assistant in the intensive care unit at Children’s Memorial Hospital. My nursing experiences have focused on children in multiple settings such as hospitals, pediatrician’s office, home health and schools. I have been a nurse for over 25 years and hold a Master’s degree in education adminis-

Detloff: As expected, cold and flu season shows a rise in illness related absences in Barrington 220. In advance, our nurses teach our students and staff to cover their cough, clean their hands, and contain their Illness by staying home. Our disease surveillance activities have shown that our district’s overall absenteeism rates and illness due to absence rates are lower than other schools in Lake County, during the same time of the year.

Thorne: How has the nursing profession changed since you began? What has improved within the school district?

Detloff: School nursing is a specialty practice that requires advanced training, focused preparation and ongoing continuing education. We deliver multi-faceted evidence-based nursing interventions to our students and the school community.

A common misconception is that school nurses deliver first aid all day long. That is one of our many important roles. However, we also focus on health promotion, illness and injury prevention, early identification and referral for abnormal findings, supporting and establishing independence with chronic disease management, responding to emergency situations and developing plans for potential emergencies.

In conjunction with a recently developed One-to-World district technology plan, all Barrington High School students will receive a Macbook Air laptop come fall. Board members approved a leaseto-own plan Tuesday where all high school students pay a

yearly technology fee of $119.

Assistant Superintendent for Educational Programs and Assessment Cindy Jaskowiak said the technology fee is similar to a yearly textbook fee and the students will not be able to keep their laptop over summer vacation unless they are on the lease-to-own plan for graduation. Families on the district’s Free and Reduced Lunch program will not be required to pay the technology fee.

Beginning this fall, entering seniors can buy their laptop

upon graduation for $800. Their paid technology fee will cover Apple Care insurance for two years post graduation. Juniors can pay $600 to buy their laptop upon graduation; sophomores $375; freshman $500. Anyone on the lease-to-own plan can retain their laptop year-round.

Jaskowiak said parents will be mailed paperwork to opt in or out of the lease-to-own plan and only 300 laptops (each) are available to juniors and seniors because of expiring Apple leases from the district’s pilot pro-

Chamber announces ‘Barrington’s Stars’

By TARAH THORNE tthorne@shawmedia.com BARRINGTON – The Barrington Area Chamber of Commerce announced several award and scholarship recipients at its annual “Spotlight on Barrington’s Stars” event held April 23 at the Inverness Country Club.

Nearly 200 guests attended the featured fashion show and staff appreciation luncheon.

Lynda Berg of Morgan Stanley was honored with the Employee of the Year award, given to a highly motivated Chamber representative who has made significant contributions to his or her organization and demonstrates a positive influence in their workplace community.

According to co-workers, Berg, a 35-year Morgan Stanley employee, is known as a “superwoman who can handle every challenge with an amazing, positive attitude.”

JourneyCare was the recipient of the Community Partnership Award, which honors a nonprofit association that has distinguished itself in the community as an innova-

tor committed to leadership resulting in the advance of a cause. JourneyCare was recognized for its 30 years of providing compassion and care and never turning anyone away for inability to pay.

Since 1982, JourneyCare has provided pain and end-oflife management for men and women of all ages. Last year, the staff cared for 330 hospice

patients, 128 palliative patients, two pediatric patients and 274 grief patients.

Next, the Lauren Brown Memorial Scholarships were presented in honor of Lauren Brown, a young woman who worked for the Chamber for several years before dying of cancer in 2012 at the age of 29. This year’s scholarship recipients were Jane Elder, Laynie Barringer and Samantha Rizzio.

Elder, a senior in the top ten percent of her class at Marian Central Catholic High School, is a member of the National Honor Society, vice president of the French Honor Society, Associate Ambassador of the Model United National, and first violin in the school’s pit orchestra. She will attend the University of Notre Dame to study journalism.

Barringer is a senior at Barrington High School, varsity captain of the school’s Lincoln Douglas Debate Team, captain of the varsity water polo team, and a member of the National

Honor Society and of the Senior Acappella Choir. Barringer is also in the top ten percent of her class. She plans to study forensic psychology at Auburn University in Alabama.

Another Barrington High School senior, Samantha Rizzio, plays volleyball on the school team, and is involved in the “Here” Club as well as Barrington Committed, and has been on the school’s honor roll for four years. She will attend Azusa Pacific University in California to pursue a degree in early childhood education.

Americans deserve an Obamacare watchdog In a recent victory lap, President Barack Obama announced that more than 8 million Americans have signed up for the Affordable Care Act. So in his view, “the repeal debate is and should be over. The Affordable Care Act is working.” But there are significant problems with the president’s assertions. The American people remain deeply unhappy about a law that has increased out-of-pocket healthcare costs for millions and taken away their choices. A recent Congressional investigation revealed only 67 percent of individuals and families that selected a health care plan from the federal marketplace have paid their first month’s premium VIEWS – laying waste to the 8 million Peter figure the administration has Roskam been touting.

The actual enrollment numbers have been closely hidden by the administration for months, and were only obtained through inquiries directly to insurance companies, underscoring what has been a constant challenge for anyone trying to monitor the health care law’s progress: because the president’s legacy is so tied to the success of the Affordable Care Act, the administration is hiding information, dissembling facts and changing the rules as they go, all in service of their own political needs. To get to the truth about the law and its implementation, I recently introduced legislation to create a special inspector general for Monitoring the Affordable Care Act, or SIGMA. An independent, nonpartisan Special Inspector General will offer Americans the complete picture of Affordable Care Act, including what decisions are being made, how the law is performing and how it will impact American families.

Currently, no single oversight official has the power to get all the information about a law that is unprecedented in both size and scope. At more than 900 pages, with thousands more pages of regulations, the massive health care law will impact one-sixth of our economy, and affect every American’s personal health care choices. SIGMA will have the authority to examine the entirety of the law, obtaining information from every one of the nine agencies and hundreds of new programs that play a role in Obamacare’s implementation.

A special inspector general would finally give the public a true accounting of the health care law, bringing much-needed transparency to a government program that is impacting millions of Americans. Armed with better information, the American people and policy makers can determine the best way to stop the worst parts of the law, and craft health care reforms that actually uphold the promise of quality, affordable health care.

The Earth Week work was in preparation for regular planting work days held from 9 to 11 a.m. each Thursday and Saturday of spring. Call for no chemicals I would beg everyone to rethink their use of lawn chemicals. According to the EPA, “several types of cancer, immuno-response deficiencies, neurological diseases and birth defects have been associated with exposure to lawn chemicals.” Also of no small account is their contamination of the soil, air and groundwater, along with the poisoning of birds, beneficial insects and other wildlife.

These chemicals pose a threat to ourselves, our kids, our pets and our environment, and all for a dandelion-free lawn? A monoculture ecosystem is neither natural or healthy. Clover used to be a common component of American lawns, beneficial to surrounding grasses as a plant that could fix its own nitrogen, until the lawn chemical manufacturers discovered their product killed clover as well. They therefore decided to convince the public that clover was a weed, so now they can sell us synthetic nitrogen fertilizer since plants that were able to provide it naturally have been eradicated by their toxic products. Such a pointless cycle of pollution. Please, let’s get our priorities straight and create cleaner, healthier neighborhoods.

Roses, horses raise money for charities

By TARAH THORNE tthorne@shawmedia.com BARRINGTON – Barrington Children’s Charities hosted a fourth annual Run for the Roses Derby Party fundraiser Saturday.

Attendees watched the Kentucky Derby live at Old Barrington Farm, 26059 W. Scott Road in Barrington, and enjoyed derby-inspired food, an open bar, live music, bestdressed awards, a 50-50 raffle, outdoor lounge and more.

Tickets were $100 per person. Sweet indulgences included Chocolate Pecan,

Bourbon Cherry and Kentucky Derby Pie. Proceeds benefited Barrington Children’s Charities, a nonprofit charitable organization that works to positively impact the lives of children. Run entirely by volunteers, the organization donates all funds to support and address the social, emotional, physical and educational needs of children within the Barrington 220 School District. Citizens for Conservation shares Earth Week experience

By TARAH THORNE tthorne@shawmedia.com LAKE BARRINGTON – College students, Boy Scouts, family teams and new and experienced restoration volunteers celebrated Earth Week by working with Citizens for Conservation leaders April 26 at the 131-acre Flint Creek Savanna in Lake Barrington.

Volunteers prepared legume seed mixes for planting before working in teams to rake and secure the seed into the prairie soil. Conservation leaders said legumes are important for prairies and can only be successfully sown in the springtime.

A second group of volunteers dug up garlic mustard plants in the oak woods-prairie restoration.

Garlic mustard is invasive and the group is getting a jump on the growing season by removing as many of the plants as possible.

After the work day, volunteers enjoyed special Earth Day refreshments brought to CFC headquarters by Chris and Heather Wu from their new Great Harvest Bread Co. in Hoffman Estates.

Dr. Mary Collins has a hard and fast rule for the parents and guardians of her patients: immunize. Immunize, immunize, immunize.

“If they refuse to do it, they are asked to find another pediatrician,” said Collins, of Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington. “That has been our cornerstone for a long time.”

The rule at Collins’s practice doesn’t necessarily apply to all Good Shepherd pediatricians, she said, but it does represent a feeling ingrained in the medical community. While a small but growing number of people are opting out of vaccinations, citing philosophical or religious reasons and driven in many cases by obscure studies circulated online, most doctors remain steadfast in their belief in the importance of immunizing.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is looking to spread a message of the benefits of immunization this week during National Infant Immunization Week.

Making sure children get vaccinated is even more important during times that have harbored a “global, mobile society,” Collins said. Children going to day care or meeting in play groups can increase germ exposure.

“Babies are getting exposed to larger groups of children at younger and younger ages,” Collins said.

Such exposure can put the very young – and very vulnerable – at risk for serious complications or death, even if the immune systems of the older, infected children they contact are strong enough to handle the sickness, said Dr. Laura Bianconi, a pediatrician at Centegra Hospital – McHenry.

Bianconi has seen that situation play out. She saw a child who was too young for the pertussis vaccine become infected by an older sibling who wasn’t vaccinated. The younger child died of the disease, better known as “whooping cough.”

The older child got sick, but recovered.

Still, Bianconi advocates for the importance of a parents’ choice in vaccinating their children.

“However, I think it’s also important that they’re given accurate information in this,” she said. “The problem with most people is that they don’t have accurate information.”

Opposition to vaccinations grew in part from a 1998 study in the medical journal “The Lancet,” which published an article linking autism to the combination vaccine that addresses measles, mumps and rubella. The article was fully retracted by the journal in 2010 after several reports through the years about its authenticity and the credibility of its lead author.

But information continues to circulate linking vaccines with autism, Bianconi said.

“The biggest reason is there’s a lot of fear about autism,” she said. “Because we don’t know 100 percent what causes it, people have come up with a bunch of theories about it. I don’t know why vaccines in particular get picked on other than every kid gets them.”

Both Bianconi and Collins pointed to studies that have debunked the link.

But the voices of those advocating for immunizations are sometimes drowned out by those of vaccine-opposers with a larger platform – such as Jenny McCarthy, the model turned TV personality recently hired on the ABC talk show, “The View.” McCarthy, who has an autistic son, has said the disorder can be attributed to his vaccinations.

Such public views have led to a discussion about what should qualify parents and guardians for an exemption from vaccine requirements.

Currently, every state offers a religious exemption, and 17 states offer philosophical exemptions. Illinois does not offer a philosophical exemption.

LAKE ZURICH – DirectBuy of Northern Illinois will relocate from its current Gurnee location to Lake Zurich this month.

Franchise owner Dave Kushner will close his Gurnee showroom Saturday and open for business May 16 at 739 W. Main St. (Route 22) in Lake Zurich.

“I’m moving it to a more centrally located area so I can better serve customers in the Northern Illinois area,” Kushner said.

Membership-based DirectBuy connects its members directly to manufacturers and authorized suppliers for items from furniture to faucets, flooring to windows, cabinetry and more.

Kushner has been in the business for 25 years. He started as a sales trainee with DirectBuy in 1989 and by 1998, he was the franchise owner of a location in Hoffman Estates.

When that location was closed to open a location in Gurnee, Kushner franchised that location in 2011. At the time, he had an understanding that when the Gurnee lease was up, Kushner would open a new location somewhere between Hoffman Estates and Gurnee.

Working with The Fidelity Group, Kushner found his new location in Lake Zurich, located near Route 12 and Route 22, in the Village Square Shopping Center between Trader Joe’s and Petco.

As a young 20-something selling furniture, Kushner became familiar with the practice of retail markup, he said.

“What we are seeing is a resurgence in the community – based on the lack of vaccination – with different diseases that are preventable,” Collins said. She added that pertussis is the preventable disease most commonly making an appearance in the area.

Because of the risks not only to individual children but to the greater community, Collins would like to see immunizations mandated for all children, without exception.

“A religious exemption has never really made sense to me,” she said.

French dining in the heart of Highland Park HIGHLAND PARK – In a community that embraces the comfort of the suburbs while being just minutes away from the city is Highland Park – and in the heart of its bustling downtown is Cafe Central, a casual storefront cafe offering French cuisine.

My date and I visited for dinner on a Sunday evening.

We called ahead to place a reservation, and left a message as the restaurant is only open for dinner services on Sundays.

Within an hour I received a call back, and was told we would be well taken care of.

Parking was easy to find and free, and upon entering the eatery we were seated by a window that overlooks Central Avenue.

While the appetizers sounded appealing – such as crab cakes, burgundy escargots with garlic butter and more – we dived right into our main entrees. My date ordered a bouillabaisse, a fish stew that included scallops, shrimp, oysters, salmon, carrots, peas and more. The dish was topped with sliced french bread in a hollandaise-like spread. The broth married the flavors of the seafood and was very comforting on a chilly night.

I opted for the pasta from the market entree, which featured in-season vegetables in a red pepper cream sauce.

My dish came with portobello mushrooms, spinach and other vegetables.

The portions were large, but we both finished everything because we came prepared with large appetites.

To top off our French dining experience, we ordered a chocolate raspberry cupcake filled with gooey hot fudge.

The dessert was topped with homemade ice cream. My date and I split the dish, and loved each bite. The chocolate and raspberry combination made this a dish I will order upon my return.

Our server was friendly, and knowledgeable of the different dishes. The walls are decorated with art nouveau

BHS softball beats Elk Grove; Rolling Meadows ahead

By TARAH THORNE tthorne@shawmedia.com BARRINGTON – It has taken Barrington’s softball team some time to get their offense going this season but when they do, their opponents have been in major trouble.

It happened again on Friday when the Fillies fell behind on the road to Elk Grove before scoring six runs in the fourth inning to take home a 6-1 Mid-Suburban League victory.

Barrington did all their damage with two outs in the inning as ten Fillies came to the plate in the pivotal frame.

Katie Dehnert led off with a single, and two batters later Kat Panos reached on an error.

Liz Sweeney walked to load the bases with one out and after Rachel Krzysko struck out, it appeared that Barrington would lose out on another scoring opportunity after having at least one runner on base in each of the first three innings.

Taylor Moran, who finished with two hits for the afternoon, however, coaxed a walk to force in Dehnert to tie the game at 1. Erin Ward and Carly Kordich followed with RBI singles, which left the bases still loaded for Jennifer Inamoto.

Inamoto drilled a double into the gap in left-center field, clearing the bases to give Barrington a 6-1 lead.

It was just up to Fillies pitcher Kennan Dolezal to shut the door after that, which she did, retiring the final nine Grenadier hitters that came to the plate. Barrington coach Perry Peterson said that it has been a normal occurrence for his team to have early scoring trouble.

Peterson added that Dolezal’s pitching was spectacular to finish the game after her teammates spotted her the big lead.

“Hopefully Keenan can carry the weight of the team at times,” Peterson added. “She certainly was good in those last three innings.”

Inamoto finished 2-for-3 for the day and said that she was just trying to help her team the best she could in her atbat that broke the game wide open.

“I’m always up there trying to do something offensively,” Inamoto said.

There is still a bit of adjustment going on for Inamoto and her sister, Caitlin, who moved from New Jersey to Barrington last summer, but Inamoto added that she doesn’t really look at it as a transitional period.

“When I first moved here, I had a different mentality approaching the plate, but now I’m more confident and I know what I’m looking for,” Inamoto said. “Just getting more atbats and each time has helped with situational hitting and pressure hitting.”

It is a busy week ahead for the Fillies with home games against Rolling Meadows and Schaumburg on Monday and Tuesday before hitting the road for games at Wheeling on Wednesday, Fremd on Friday and Palatine on May 12.
