Let’s all put the ‘giving’ in Thanksgiving BARRINGTON – Happy turkey day!

I’ve grown to learn, as most have, that Thanksgiving is about more than wishbones, football and pumpkin pie. It’s about cherishing a holiday with friends and family while recalling all that you are grateful for.

Although, speaking with the Cuba Township Food Pantry Liaison Kate Formichella last week, I realized that food is a very real problem for nearly 100 local families this season – families that don’t have the means to fuel up their car and drive to visit distant relatives or add some toasty marshmallows to their children’s sweet potato casserole.

In hard economic times, many families must choose to either pay the utility bill or set the Thanksgiving dinner table, while the costs of upcoming winter holidays linger too close for comfort.

Thankfully, this local food pantry and other crisis organizations provide assistance during these times – yet, when funding becomes low, assistance

With the help of Roslyn Road Elementary students, the Cuba Township Food Pantry has filled more than 80 Thanksgiving baskets with everything from turkey coupons to cranberries.

I wish I could end the story there, but they still need the community’s help through the holidays and beyond.

Having worked with this food pantry for more than 10 years, Formichella said that donations have been at a low this year.

son, Formichella said volunteers were not able to pack this year’s Thanksgiving baskets with grocery or gas certificates for traveling families as they have been able to previous years.

That being said, the pantry’s lowest donation season still continues to be between May and mid-October. Formichella said that anything helps yearround – paper products, canned goods, snacks, toiletries, cleaning supplies, donated monies, baking mix, or even a helping hand.

“We have an army of both male and female volunteers that have been with us for years,” Formichella said.

“There’s no chance we could help the amount of families we do without our volunteers.”

So here’s my proposal – how about a holiday scavenger hunt or cabinet cleanout? Let’s give others the chance to forget about food and be grateful for the little things, the quality time. Better yet, let’s gift hope for the future – a warmer winter and a positive spirit.

What is your personal favorite candy?

My favorite candy is the Marathon Bar which is now called Curly Wurly. It’s a thin-braided chocolate with caramel inside.

What are your plans for the future?

SweetSpot intends to keep on delivering great items and keep their customers happy. We are open year-round and have longer hours in the summer so after-dinner crowds can buy sweets.

Roslyn students feel the giving spirit

By TARAH THORNE tthorne@shawmedia.com BARRINGTON – ’Tis the season for giving, and one local food pantry needs help – now, more than ever.

The Cuba Township Food Pantry has been working with Roslyn Road Elementary fifth graders to fill dozens of Thanksgiving baskets for more than 80 families in need this season. Longtime pantry volunteer and Roslyn service mom Amy Paulus helped conduct a schoolwide food drive on Nov. 13, where all proceeds were donated directly to the pantry.

Children of all grade levels were encouraged to bring canned food items on their bus rides to school that morning. Once the buses arrived, a team of fifth graders collected the items and placed them in Jewel-Osco-provided shopping carts before several parent volunteers took the donations to the pantry.

the importance of giving, and try to explain that service is a year-round thing – not just for the holidays,” Paulus said.

“Even if a student donates only one or two items, it can make a big difference for families in need.”

Although many Roslyn students participated in the food drive, the weather was chilly and donations were limited, Paulus said. The fifth grade service squad worked hard to collect enough food to fill 20 Thanksgiving baskets for the pantry – yet, fell 50 baskets worth of goods short of their goal.

Cuba Township Food Pantry liaison Kate Formichella said the pantry was grateful for the school’s service and knew the families receiving the boxes would be appreciative as well.

“We’ve just had low funds this year. I think the economic times have caught up with people, and we aren’t getting the big donations that we have in the past,” Formichel-

The Cuba Township Food Pantry is open yearround, providing oncea-month products such as canned goods, snacks, toiletries and cleaning supplies, as well as weekly fresh food. The basket donation program runs three times a year – each Thanksgiving, winter and spring. Baskets are made on a reservation basis and distributed through 15-minute pick-up appointments.

Formichella said that many of the pantry’s registered recipients actually take the time to volunteer as well.

“They want to be able to give back to the cause as much as they want to be able to feed their own families,” Formichella said.

Formichella said that donations usually fall off between May and mid-October.

“There tends to be more going out than coming in when it’s not the holiday season,” Formichella said.

All Thanksgiving baskets contained a coupon for a ham or turkey, potatoes, stuffing mix, chicken broth, Jell-O, cranberries and other baking supplies.

In previous years, the pantry also was able to provide grocery or gas certificates, but funds have been too low this year.

michella said. “People want to be able to drive and visit their families.”

The pantry used previously donated cash to fill the remaining Thanksgiving baskets after the Roslyn Road food drive by buying items such as salad dressing, pancake syrup and breakfast staples.

In December, the pantry will be looking for fresh carrots for Santa’s reindeer, Parmesan cheese, olive oil, candy, cookies and an assortment of baking supplies.

“We want to do a fun Italian theme for our winter boxes this year,” Formichella said. “It’s a special time.”

BHS ‘IT’ campaign panel chooses charity

By TARAH THORNE tthorne@shawmedia.com BARRINGTON – One local charity is feeling extra grateful this Thanksgiving season as Barrington High School students begin fundraising plans to pay it forward.

Shelter Inc. of Arlington Heights has been selected from a pool of applicants as the 2014 BHS “IT” Campaign charity of choice. This fifth annual, weeklong fundraising campaign will run March 14 to March 20.

After reading a Barrington Suburban Life story about BHS students beginning their search for a charity to fund, Shelter Inc. Development Director Carol Brown said the nonprofit organization was eager to apply.

“It seemed like a really great opportunity to raise a shocking amount of money,” Brown said.

Each November, a student committee chooses the nonprofit it will donate to. In the

past four years, it has donated nearly $40,000 to organizations such as Barrington Youth and Family Services, Walk on Farm, Home of the Sparrow and Barrington Giving Day. Shelter Inc. provides community-based, emergency and long-term housing to children and adolescents who are abused, neglected, dependent or in need of supervision.

BHS Associate Principal Paul Gillette said the students typically choose the charity applicant they feel has the greatest need for funding.

“We are just very, very excited,” Brown said. “The money will go directly toward children in group and foster homes as well as our family services.”

KAELI O’CONNOR

“You’re only going to get out of something what you put into it, so establishing that strong work ethic and drive to push through things and get them done on a schedule is very important.”

ART STUDENT Kaeli O’Connor is a young, Barrington artist who is quite familiar with the community. Her uncle, Tim O’Connor, is the owner of The Catlow theater.

Barrington Suburban Life reporter Tarah Thorne asked the American Academy of Art senior about her creative childhood, work within the area and post-graduation plans.

What work have you done in Barrington?

I’ve enjoyed drawing for as long as I can remember.

I always knew it was going to be a large part of my life, although it wasn’t until high school that I really realized I could pursue a career in art.

What’s most rewarding is probably just feeling like people appreciate my ideas.

Knowing that my work is helping to communicate something more clearly or at least in an interesting way is a big reward for me.

What type of art are you most interested in?

You graduate from the American Academy of Art in December. What are your plans for the future?

How did you become interested in art?

I became interested in art really early on. I have a very artistic family. My mother has always drawn and painted as a pastime, my older brother is an animator, and my younger sister is also an illustration student right now.

Growing up, there were so many of us drawing and making things. It was always a really fun and supported activity in my home.

Art student find where you fit into it all.

Have you always wanted to be an artist? What’s most rewarding?

Last summer, The Catlow started a Kickstarter project to help the theater afford to convert their film projection system to the digital format.

To help spread the word about Kickstarter, I was asked to create a couple of posters promoting the project that they could hang up around Barrington.

Kickstarter was a huge success, which came as no surprise to me – people love that theater. They were extremely supportive. I’m proud to have been a part of it.

I enjoy many different types of art, but I’ve always gravitated toward illustration. Illustration is about communication as much as it is about aesthetics. The idea of communicating or translating things visually has always appealed to me.

Kaeli O’Connor

Well, my portfolio at the moment mostly consists of editorial work, which are illustrations that are created to accompany a piece of writing of some kind. These are illustrations you might see in magazines, newspapers, books, etc. Establishing contacts with publications that I can see my work potentially having a place in is something I’m currently working on.

Other than that, I’m also pursuing a few different graphic design internships. I have a strong interest in print design. I expect that any career working freelance takes some time to really get off the ground, and at the moment, a large part of me is really just dying to be creating things professionally that will be published or used in the real

What do you do when you aren’t working or in school?

I like learning about other artists. I’ll read about them or listen to interviews. I listen to quite a few illustration- and design-related podcasts and things like that. I also enjoy a lot of television and movies.

I have what is probably an unhealthy appreciation for Netflix. I just discovered Mad Men over summer, so I’m dying to pick that back up when I get some free time over the holidays.

What have you taken away from your education? What’s been most challenging?

I think my biggest takeaway from my education has to be work ethic. Throughout my last year in school, many of my classes have been sort of self-directed. The student is in charge of creating their own projects and establishing deadlines and things like that, so it’s taught me to be very self-motivated, which I think is extremely valuable.

What would be your advice to younger aspiring artists?

Keep working hard. Learn as much as you can and do as much work as you can.

Are you a movie fan?

It was really cool growing up. It’s a hugely popular, historical theater and it’s just always been a familiar place to my family. Yes, I’m a big movie fan. Going out to the movies is an entirely different experience than TV or Netflix. It’s a fun way to spend a night out, especially at a theater as beautiful as The Catlow.

Where could someone check out some of your art?

BHS band to march streets of London Members prepare for New Year’s Day parade, Cadogan Hall performance

By TARAH THORNE tthorne@shawmedia.com BARRINGTON – London is calling 22-year Barrington High School Director of Bands Randy Karon as he and many school musicians accept their most important invitation to date – a spot in London’s New Year’s Parade and subsequent concert festival.

About 100 BHS band members and hundreds more chaperons and family members will depart for Europe on Dec. 27. While in London, the band will perform at the world-renowned Cadogan Hall (home of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra), have the opportunity to tour various historic sites, and participate in the 27th annual “Lord Mayor of Westminster’s Big Parade.”

Under the recognition of Queen Elizabeth II and 500,000

spectators, this trip will mark the first time the BHS band will travel outside of the U.S. and Canada to share its talent.

Karon said he looks forward to his students having the opportunity to showcase their abilities on a global stage.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Karon said.

“We’re thrilled to be invited.”

Some BHS band alumni will be returning from college to take part in the winter break trip, he said.

The BHS band was selected for this parade and festival honor after meeting specific performance qualifications regarding the band’s depth, breadth of talent and experience. “With a production this size and a reputation a stake, the committee only wants the best in class,” BHS band parent Kate Hauk said.

BHS staff extended the London invitation to any member of the BHS Symphonic and Concert Bands – which include about 200 student musicians – but Hauk said some students will be unable to participate because of other commitments, and the trip is costly.

Hauk said that every effort has been made to defray the significant expense of the trip ($3,000 per traveler) through local fundraising efforts including food sales, trivia nights and partnerships with local restaurants and boutiques.

Hauk’s freshman daughter, Carolyn Hauk, is a BHS clarinetist who said the band will be focused on turning out their best performance while taking in all that London has to offer.

“I can’t wait to meet musi-

cians from all over the world and compare notes on different performance styles,” Carolyn Hauk said. “I’m looking forward to exploring the historic city and amazing culture, and I’ve been practicing my ‘Brit.’ ” Sophomore band member Teagan Kick said the upcoming trip is a great privilege, especially with having the chance to perform on the same stage as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

“We are able to participate in the largest New Year’s Day parade in the world,” Kick said.

The annual London tradition began Jan. 1, 1987, as the “Lord Mayor of Westminster’s Big Parade” as a way to provide free entertainment.

Renamed the London New Year’s Day Parade and Festival in 1994, the spectacle now includes more than 10,000 performers traveling from all over the world. It will be broadcast globally to several million viewers.

This year’s parade will begin at 6 a.m. (central time) Jan. 1. Broadcasting specifics have not yet been announced.

Tiger Martial Arts celebrates 30th anniversary

By STEPHANIE KOHL Barrington Suburban Life contributor BARRINGTON – When he was 16 years old, both David Garrison’s father and his tennis coach were in agreement that Garrison needed to work on his focus.

They had heard about Grand Master Ken Ok Hyung Kim, and Garrison became part of the first generation that studied kyuki-do – a mixed martial art that combines elements of many traditional martial arts styles – under the grand master.

“A lot of what we did was based on control, self-control as part of our tenets,” Garrison said. “Our tenets we promoted were courtesy, humility, integrity, perseverance, self-control and indomitable spirit.”

Following college, Garrison spent several years as a professional fighter. He was awarded Kyu Ki Do Black Belt man of the year in 1996, Hapki Do instructor of the year in 2007, and in 2008, Garrison was inducted

into the U.S. Martial Arts Hall of Fame.

For the past 30 years, he also has trained children and adults from the Barrington area in the martial arts.

Tiger Martial Arts, 28686 W. Northwest Highway (Route 14), is celebrating its 30th anniversary this month. It offers training in kyuki-do, jujitsu, hapki do, MMA training, weapons training, kickboxing, TNT private lessons and nutrition programs. Tiger Martial Arts has been at its current location for about seven years.

Kim also is responsible for Garrison becoming a martial arts teacher. He asked Garrison to fill in for him and teach a class in Barrington for one month.

“When the master asks you to do something, the answer is always ‘yes,’ ” Garrison said. “Once I started instructing, it didn’t take but a month for me to realize it was something I liked. We all have our

Garrison teaches people from the ages of 4 years old and up. He even has a student who is nearly 70. It takes children about seven years to reach black belt level through his training, and adults about five years. Garrison has very high standards when it comes to moving students through the different levels.

“It’s integrity,” he said. “It’s what I’ve been taught since I worked with Grand Master Kim.” Fox River Grove resident Dean Corbin has been a student of Garrison’s since he was 15 years old. He’s now 23 years old and achieved his black belt about two years ago.

When Corbin first started studying martial arts, he had epilepsy and was on medication to keep it under control.

Through his study of martial

arts and the exercise, as well as the concentration and healthier eating that came along with it, he was able to get off medication and has been epileptic-free for four years.

Corbin also has been an instructor at Tiger Martial Arts for about three years. He just recently tested for his 2nd-degree black belt.

Holly Zastrow is a senior instructor at Tiger Martial Arts and a 3rd-degree black belt.

Zastrow has been studying under Garrison for 15 years.

While she studied martial arts in high school, she stopped for about 20 years before finding Tiger Martial Arts.

“I never completed getting my black belt, and that was one of my goals back then,” she said.

She also is a holistic nutritionist and offers nutrition counseling and planning at Tiger Martial Arts.

“It’s all about treating the whole body, the whole self,” she said. “When you’re working out with martial arts, you want to be able to feel your best.

Can Bears’ defense stop Adrian Peterson?

For the most part, things have not gone well for the Minnesota Vikings since the Bears last saw them in Soldier Field the second week of the season.

But after all kinds of turmoil at the quarterback position because of injury and the surprising signing of Josh Freeman, who then failed miserably in his one start before suffering a concussion, the Vikings look an awful lot like the club the Bears barely got by in Week 2 with their 31-30 victory on a last-minute touchdown pass from Jay Cutler to Martellus Bennett.

Christian Ponder appears to be firmly re-entrenched as the starting quarterback, and Adrian Peterson will be coming off one of his best games of the season in Green Bay, where the Vikings played the Packers

to a tie in overtime.

Most of the biggest questions in this matchup will be about the Bears’ mindset after the egg they laid in St. Louis on Sunday, and whether they have any hope at all of slowing Peterson with the worst run defense in the NFL. Peterson rushed for 146 yards on 32 carries and a touchdown in five quarters of football, and while he hasn’t approached his 2012 heroics, he was still the NFL’s second-leading rusher before the Redskins-49ers game Monday night with 997 total yards, a 4.4 average and 10 touchdowns.

Ponder has been a threat on the ground with 34 scrambles for 151 yards and four touchdowns, and he’s completing 64.5 percent of his passes for a 78.7 passer rating, seven touchdowns and nine interceptions. While his passing numbers on the season don’t scare you, he did complete 21 of 30 throws for 233 yards and a 103.9 passer rating Sunday at Lambeau.

Greg Jennings and Jerome Simpson have been up and down, but are

reliable targets for Ponder when the Vikings are playing well. Cordarrelle Patterson is a factor in the kick return game, but is still struggling to find himself as a receiver.

On defense, the Vikings have struggled all year. They are 30th in total defense, 14th versus the run but 29th against the pass. They are 23rd in interception percentage and 26th rushing the quarterback.

On the defensive line, Jared Allen and Kevin Williams are former all pros who are both still capable of having big games, but don’t do it on a regular basis any more. LeTroy Guion and Brian Robison still are starting as well, and this is the unit that helped key the Vikings playoff run in 2012, but they have all struggled this year.

Chad Greenway is still the guy you have to identify on Minnesota’s defense, and he’ll make plays all over the field, but Erin Henderson in the middle and Marvin Mitchell on the weak side are guys the Bears should be able to exploit.

Josh Robinson and Chris Cook are

third- and second-round draft picks, respectively, on the corners who are both athletic and fast enough but terribly inconsistent, which is why this team is 29th in pass defense.

The safeties, Jamarca Sanford and Andrew Sendejo, aren’t bad forcing the run, but do struggle in coverage.

At the end of the day for the Bears, this one comes down to what are they going to do about Peterson? After going off for a 140 on the ground week nine against the Cowboys, Peterson had been held in check by the Redskins and Seahawks before exploding again in Green Bay. The unfortunate fact is if the Vikings climb on Peterson’s back, there is little the Bears will be able to do but get into a shootout.

The good news is that Josh McCown continues to flourish in Marc Trestman’s offense, and the Bears have a lot more weapons on offense than Minnesota, giving them an excellent chance to prevail by piling up points, which is exactly what happened the last time they got together.

By J.C. TALON Fantasy football writer The bye weeks are over, but week 13 presents a new challenge for fantasy owners: Three Thursday games.

Ah, Thanksgiving! Nothing beats spending time with loved ones, enjoying a fine feast … and getting a jump on your fantasy opponent! I’m not suggesting that Aunt Mildred’s discussions aren’t riveting, but it’s always fun to have players going on Thanksgiving.

A closer look at Thursday’s games will help you determine which players can help your team and those who are likely to be … turkeys (ouch).

THANKSGIVING DAY PREVIEW Packers at Lions, 11:30 a.m.

This game not only features several intriguing fantasy matchups, it also is pivotal to the NFC North. The big

question, of course, is whether Aaron Rodgers will play. As of Monday morning, his status was uncertain. Matt Flynn came to the rescue last week against Minnesota, taking over for a struggling Scott Tolzien.

Obviously, the Packers are a stronger play if it’s Rodgers, but either quarterback should produce. Flynn seemed to have a connection with Jarrett Boykin, who hauled in five receptions and a touchdown in the second half. The Lions’ defense is ranked No. 28 against the pass. Boykin, James Jones and Jordy Nelson are solid starts. Kicker Mason Crosby also is in for a good day. It might be tougher for Eddie Lacy – Detroit is No. 4 against the run – but we still like the talented rookie this week.

The Lions are among the league’s dumbest teams.

They also are one of the most talented. Calvin Johnson is an obvious start and Matthew

Stafford should be productive against the Packers’ 18thranked defense. The Packers equally are mediocre versus the run and the pass, so start Reggie Bush.

Raiders at Cowboys, 3:30 p.m.

The late-afternoon game should be a bonanza for Tony Romo and Dez Bryant. The Raiders’ defense ranks No. 8 against the run, but a dismal No. 25 versus the pass. It would be a surprise if Romo didn’t crest 300 yards and throw at least two touchdown passes, probably more. Jason Witten also is a must start. Terrance Williams has disappeared, and

all other Cowboys’ receivers would seem to be afterthoughts at this point. Although the Raiders are respectable against the run – sticking with the idea that this will be a shootout – start DeMarco Murray and Dan Bailey.

The Cowboys actually have the weaker defense in this contest, ranking last in points and passing yards. Assuming Darren McFadden will be in street clothes, Rashard Jennings is a great play. If Denarius Moore returns, he is a solid play. If not, take a close look at Rod Streater.

Steelers at Ravens, 7:30 p.m.

Two good, but not great, defenses face off in the night game. Ben Roethlisberger has averaged 22 fantasy points over the past four weeks.

He has been up and down, however. He might be looking at something around 15 points this week. The Steelers still drive fantasy owners crazy

with their running-back rotation, but Le’Veon Bell is clearly the best option. This week, he’s probably looking at 10 to 14 points. Antonio Brown is a top-five fantasy receiver and an obvious play. After Brown, it gets dicey. Jerricho Cotchery had emerged during weeks 9-11, but he went without a reception against the Browns.

After lighting up the Bears in week 11, Ray Rice reverted to his 2013 form against the Jets (16 carries for 30 yards).

Although the Jets are stout against the run, it’s time to look at Rice as a No. 3 fantasy back or flex option. In smaller leagues, he’s probably not worth a roster spot. After kicker Justin Tucker and receiver Torrey Smith, the Ravens do not offer much in this game.

Given his recent production, it’s hard to recommend Joe Flacco. Call it a gut instinct: He scores 20-plus points against Pittsburgh.

BHS swimmer BE PICTURE PERFECT THESE HOLIDAYS shatters state record

By TARAH THORNE tthorne@shawmedia.com BARRINGTON – Barrington High School sophomore Kirsten Jacobsen broke a state record in the finals of the girls swimming state meet on Saturday at New Trier Township High School in Winnetka.

Swimming the 200-yard freestyle, Jacobsen finished at 1:46:98, breaking the 2005 record held by Kelly McNichols of Naperville Central. The previous record was 1:47:17.

Jacobsen said Monday she had not expected to shatter this record.

“I knew if I stayed with the top racers in the first half of the swim, I’d be able to bring it home and beat them,” Jacobsen said. “But I’m still shocked I broke the record. I had no idea.”

Jacobsen also won the 500yard freestyle on Saturday,

repeating her reign as state champion in the event. Jacobsen swam this event at 4:46:93 – just under the current state record, but three seconds faster than last year.

“I was only two-tenths of a second off the 500-free record,” Jacobsen said. “My goal is to beat that record next year.”

The BHS girls swimming team placed 13th in the state competition with a total of 43 points. Maintaining four-year champion status, New Trier placed first with 160.5 points.

Jacobsen said New Trier is a tough team.

“I like competing with New Trier because they push us hard,” Jacobsen said.

Four girls represented the BHS team on Saturday and only one will be graduating.

Jacobsen said she hopes to return to state next year with the same three girls, as well as a few more, to place in the top 10.
