By TARAH THORNE tthorne@shawmedia.com BARRINGTON – “It’s not often I can stand in front of someone and thank them for saving the world,” said an audience member at a Barrington High School Alumni Legends event Thursday.

Former U.S. Secretary of the Treasury (2006-08) Henry “Hank” Paulson Jr. was interviewed on the BHS auditorium stage in front of attendees of all ages, former peers and his wife, Wendy. Paulson returned home to Barrington Hills a few years ago, having graduated from BHS in 1964.

Celebrating his 50-year reunion during the school’s homecoming week, Paulson tackled questions from fellow classmate Jack Train about his childhood, work in the White House and the future of the country’s economy.

Paulson has grown comfortable with tackling crises, he said, after all, he was the chairman and CEO of Goldman Sachs after his education as an English major and an offensive lineman at Dartmouth College; and as a business major at Harvard University, where he received his master’s degree.

After college, Paulson was an U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense at The Pentagon

from 1970-72, in addition to his working as an assistant in the White House during President Richard Nixon’s administration. His corporate career began in Chicago when he joined global investment firm Goldman Sachs in 1974, and eventually relocated to New York upon promotion.

Paulson told the audience he “did not at all prepare for the job” at the White House.

“I turned President George [W.] Bush down the first couple of times I was approached,” Paulson said. “But on the third time, I accepted, because I realized I was only running away because of fear of failure.”

Paulson joked there were few people, at the time, who had “gone to Washington” and came away with a better reputation than they had when they started.

“Don’t worry if you don’t have your life planned out in high school,” Paulson said. “I actually question the people who do.”

Upon entering the White House, Paulson fielded count-

less phone calls and meetings on a day-to-day basis, he said.“It was like playing offense.”

Paulson said he knew he could handle the task of bailing the U.S. out of its economic crisis because he’d been in stressful situations all his life and “stress is stress.”

“Once the water is boiling, it doesn’t matter how hot of a situation it is,” Paulson said.

“You just have to figure it out.”

Nowadays, Paulson is doing “absolutely nothing commercial,” he said.

Paulson is chairman of the non-governmental, Chicago-based Paulson Institute, which is working to further the relationship between the U.S. and China, he said.

“We need to make that global relationship work,” Paulson said. “If it works, we have a better chance of solving environmental and economic sustainability issues. If it doesn’t work, we’re going to be in trouble.”

Paulson’s book, “Dealing with China,” will be released

in the spring 2015.

Addressing the future, Paulson said financial crisis will always be a possibility, as long as economic systems exist.

The key is managing crises before they erupt, Paulson said.

“People don’t know how closely we came to economic Armageddon,” Paulson said.

“Most people never will understand it, but our staff forgot about poll popularity and politics, and did what it took to save the country.”

The Alumni Legends event was partially sponsored by the Barrington 220 Educational Foundation who brings accredited alums back to the school to inspire students.

Foundation chairwoman Donna Penyak said the event was special because it gave the community the opportunity to “listen and learn from someone who once walked the same halls of BHS.” A dinner after the interview was soldout as a fundraiser to the Foundation, which has raised more than $2.3 million in educational program donations since 1999.

BHS celebrates homecoming SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA BARRINGTON – Unusually warm fall weather drew crowds to the 2014 Barrington High School homecoming parade Saturday.

This year’s theme was “Arabian Nights.” The parade followed its traditional route of beginning on Wool

Street before traveling west on Main Street, toward the school.

Other weekend homecoming activities included a pep assembly, Powder Puff Filly game, community pancake breakfast, and tennis, soccer and football games. The homecoming dance was Saturday evening at BHS.

Arboretum of South Barrington on the market

By ANGELA SYKORA Barrington Suburban Life The Arboretum of South Barrington, which struggled to stay afoot in the economic recession, averted foreclosure, and became a thriving commercial development, is for sale.

Today, the Arboretum is 92-percent leased.

“This is a very significant asset with a tremendous tenant base,” said Michael Jaffe, president of the Jaffe Companies, which owns the center along with Boston-based Long Wharf Real Estate Partners LLC. Potential buyers were alerted to the sale in a memo last week, said Jaffe. Eastdil Secured LLC has been hired to sell the property. The price tag is not being disclosed to the general public.

Opened in Sept. 2008, the open-air “shop, dine and play” center at Routes 59 and 72 occupies a portion of a 610-acre site that once belonged to Klehm’s Nursery, according to

Deutschle Gary A. Deutschle, 40, of 801 W. Algonquin Road in Algonquin, was charged with two counts of domestic battery, both Class A misdemeanors – one for bodily harm and one for provoking nature.

Deutschle appeared in rights court Friday morning and was released from the McHenry County Jail after making bond.

The criminal complaint alleges Deutschle pushed open a door, striking his wife on the right wrist.

Gas station proposal concerns officials

By LEE GAINES Barrington Suburban Life LAKE BARRINGTON – The possibility of a Speedway gas station and convenience store opening next to the site of a potential middle school has some in Lake Barrington concerned for a host of reasons.

Speedway LLC has applied to the village for a special-use permit to open a 24-hour gas station with 10 fueling islands and a 4,600-square-foot convenience station, plus a two-bay car wash, on a 3.8acre site at the intersection of Kelsey Road and Northwest Highway.

The village Plan Commission has yet to make a recommendation on the permit and a public hearing is scheduled for Oct. 9. Once the Plan Commission offers it’s decision, it will be up to the village trustees to decide whether or not to issue the permit.

The property is currently owned by Bill Noyes, whose family owned and operated

a veterinary clinic on the property for many years, village administrator Chris Martin said. But the building that now sits on the property is vacant and unusable, he said.

Speedway representatives have said they expect the business to generate $20 million in gross sales annually, Martin said.

According to Martin, If those figures pan out, the village is in line to receive about $200,000 worth of sales tax revenue per year.

Lake Barrington’s current sales tax budget is $350,000; however, with the closing of the auto dealership, Fidelity Motor Group, that number is expected to decrease 15 to 20 percent, Martin said.

Roughly 18 acres of land adjacent to the proposed Speedway site is owned by Barrington District 220, district board president Brian Battle said.

“We have earmarked it as a site for a third middle school campus in our master

plan,” Battle said. “There are currently two middle schools in our district, and both have enrollments that exceed the planned capacity for the buildings.”

Battle said he doesn’t expect the district to pursue building on site for another five or six years, but that could change if enrollment were to suddenly increase.

District attorneys have concluded there is nothing in the Illinois statutes “that would inhibit use [of the property] as a school if they were to put the planned Speedway in,” Battle said.

But residents in the community are concerned about light pollution, the size of the gas station, air pollution, traffic concerns and Speedway’s stated intention to sell beer and wine at the proposed convenience store.

“It doesn’t fit out here,” said Brad Martin, a District 220 parent and Linden Drive resident. “This is horse country out here. People move out here for a reason. I think it

would negatively impact home values as well. If that thing goes in, I’m putting my house up for sale and I’m moving. No one wants to live next to a truck stop.”

Martin worries sales of beer and wine late into the night would “attract an element and a crowd you just don’t want.”

Both Martin and Battle also share concerns about the environmental impact of the station on well water; however, a report by the village’s environmental consultants, Huff and Huff Inc., concluded the station would not pose a risk to groundwater sources.

Battle said the school board has not taken an official stance on the proposed Speedway, though they may in the future.

“I know there are a lot of people that probably have their minds made up on certain things,” Battle said.

“There’s still a lot of unanswered questions,” Battle added.

In a 1995 essay called “Bowling Alone,” and later in a book of the same name, author Robert D. Putnam mused that the fall-off in league play had far-reaching roots – and consequences.

“The rise of solo bowling threatens the livelihood of

bowling-lane proprietors because those who bowl as members of leagues consume three times as much beer and pizza as solo bowlers, and the money in bowling is in the beer and pizza, not the balls and shoes,” Putnam wrote. “The broader social significance, however,

lies in the social interaction and even occasionally civic conversations over beer and pizza that solo bowlers forgo.

“Whether or not bowling beats balloting in the eyes of most Americans, bowling teams illustrate yet another vanishing form of social capital.”

Student publishes two Minecraft books as library starts game club

By STEPHANIE KOHL Barrington Suburban Life BARRINGTON – A Barrington sixth grader became a two-time published author this month.

On Sept. 14, “A Tale of Friends, Enemies and MineCon,” written by Jake Mayer, 11, was released. It’s a follow-up to Mayer’s “A Tale of Friends, Enemies and Minecraft,” released in May 2013.

“It’s about the same characters, but they go to MineCon,” Mayer said.

Mayer actually attended MineCon with his family in November, giving him plenty of first-hand information to include in the novel.

“The characters go to the

Minecraft convention and they have some adventures with an old enemy and also made a new friend,” said Kris Mayer, Jake Mayer Jake’s mother.

Mayer wrote the first novel as a fourthgrade assignment in honor of national novel writing month.

The second book was also written during national novel writing month. To complete the novel, the current Barrington Middle School-Station student set a goal of writing 750 words each school night to complete the 20,000-word requirement – in addition to completing other homework.

“The reason I was inclined to write the second book is because of the success of the first book,” Mayer said, adding he really enjoyed reading comments and hearing from people who weren’t big readers, but couldn’t put the book down.

He has sold roughly 14,000 copies of his first title.

Minecraft is a game about breaking and placing blocks.

At first, people built structures to protect against nocturnal monsters, but as the game grew, players worked together to create wonderful and imaginative things, according to minecraft.net.

“There really are no rules to the game, so you can build whatever you want,” Mayer said.

Mayer’s mother described the game as going from Legos to virtual Legos.

“What I like as a parent as that it teaches problem solving,” Kris Mayer said.

The Barrington Area Library started a Minecraft Club this month. The library has 11 accounts and devices the club can use to play Minecraft.

“It’s so popular right now amongst a certain age group,” said Karen McBride, the library’s public information officer. “It has really taken off.”

Right now, the club is planned to meet once a month.

The first session for those in third through fifth grade was held Sept. 29. The first session for those in sixth through

eighth grade was Sept. 30. The club will allow kids to play individually or with each other.

It is open to both new and experienced players.

“I think the appeal of it is you build your own world, but it’s not so complicated a kid can’t do it,” McBride said.

Mayer said Minecraft lends itself well to playing with others as collaboration can help players advance their building and help each other find rare resources.

Fifty-year-old Greg Thielsen smiled and lifted his right hand shoulder high as 22-yearold Aaron Schultz approached.

The two high-fived as the distinctive rumble and crash of balls striking pins reverberated in the background. Warmups were under way, and the Wednesday night men’s league at Raymond’s Bowl in Johnsburg was about to start.

“I bowled in high school,” Thielsen said, recalling his introduction to the sport. “They had bowling in gym class.”

Thielsen, a McHenry resident, added he’s been a league bowler since he was 17. A 200-average bowler, Thielsen plays in two leagues each week at the modern, 24-lane alley on Johnsburg Road.

“I love the people, the friends,” Thielsen said.

Despite enthusiasts like Thielsen, as an industry bowling witnessed a steep decline between 1998 and 2012. U.S. Census data show the total number of U.S. bowling centers fell from just under 5,500 to just more than 4,000 during that period.

Part of that decline was attributable to the recession, but a significant portion came down to a dwindling number of people signing up for leagues.

Social capital aside, bowling remains a $3.2 billion business, said Bart Burger, director of membership and educational services at the Texas-based Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America.

Citing IBISWorld and Experian Simmons research, Burger added that 67 million Americans have bowled in the past 12 months, making bowling the No. 1 participation sport in the country.

“It is more popular than baseball, soccer, football, golf or any other sport you can name,” Burger said in an email. “While league play has declined, casual guests tend to spend more per visit and are more profitable on a per-visit basis. League bowlers are more profitable in total as they have a much greater frequency.

“Successful proprietors today have learned how to balance both and provide a great experience to both types of bowlers,” he said.

Jim Contos, who owns the historic Metro Bowl on Brink Street in downtown Crystal Lake, said the key to his business’ continuing success is atmosphere.

“Business is good,” he said.

“And what we’ve done is we’ve focused on maintaining that

By JEFF ENGELHARDT jengelhardt@shawmedia.com CRYSTAL LAKE – Developers for a proposed power plant in Oakwood Hills have killed the project in light of strong public opposition from residents of the village and surrounding areas.

The proposed $450 million, natural gas power plant first was presented to residents in July and garnered immediate opposition as nearly 1,000 people showed up to the first zoning hearing on the project. Residents said the plant presented serious health, environmental and community concerns, including its proximity to a school and the negative effect it would have on property values.

Martin Gierut, chair of the Oakwood Hills Zoning Board, said he was glad to see the developers listen to the outcry, but was disappointed the board never got to vote on the measure.

“I have a feeling the power

company would not have liked the result of the vote,” Gierut said. “I think it was an ill-conceived plan ... and they decided it was no longer worth the time and effort.”

The proposal was a rallying point for Oakwood Hills residents and surrounding communities who gathered to fight against the project.

The Power Plant Opposition Group had 3,789 members on its Facebook page and raised more than $30,000 in online fundraising efforts.

The grassroots fight caught the attention of state Rep. David McSweeney, R-Barrington Hills, and state Sen. Dan Duffy, R-Lake Barrington, who helped the group in its efforts.

After Funk closed off Village Hall to the public in August citing threats that were later found to be undocumented, McSweeney and Duffy had the Illinois Attorney General investigate the village and press Funk and leaders to reopen the doors.

Founder and CEO Dale Schwartz has opened six of the bowling and bocce centers nationwide, with four more on the way. The South Barrington location, part of the Arboretum complex on Higgins Road, opened in 2008.

With its elegant and expansive wine cellar, leather couch seating at the alleys and more, Pinstripes is part fine dining, part corporate party and wed-

ding venue, and part gaming.

Even as many bowling alleys were closing, Pinstripes locations were opening, and so far, the mix is working, Schwartz said.

“In May 2007, the Dow was at 16,000,” Schwartz said. “In September 2008, the Dow was at 6,400. We’ve been opening locations in the face of negative economic headwinds, but we’ve still been doing well.

“Our prices are very fair, and our quality is very high,” he said. “It’s an exceptional value, and [regardless of economic times] people still like to have fun. People might be less apt to fly to Florida or Paris, but more apt to head to Pinstripes, stay local, and still enjoy some terrific times.”

Back at Raymond’s in Johnsburg, co-owner Steve Kuna surveyed the Wednesday night crowd as bowlers chatted about their jobs and families between turns.

He said the recession, which hit hard shortly after his family opened their new location in 2006, did make for a rough start. But the alley now is busy daily.

“We’ve just stayed proactive and we treat people well,” he said. “We appreciate the people who come in. We have a lot of nice people who come in here.”

Local chef pairs pasta and tunes at Ravinia

By TARAH THORNE tthorne@shawmedia.com HIGHLAND PARK – One day before hosting a firsttime Food Network in Concert event at Ravinia, in Highland Park, the magazine’s associate publisher, Peggy Mansfield was checking off final to dos.

Mansfield knew she had about 70 celebrity chefs traveling to the park from as far as New York, Los Angeles, and the Bahamas. The show was already sold out at 10,000 people, but Mansfield said she wasn’t nervous.

“These entertainers are masters at what they do,” Mansfield said. “Chefs are like rock stars in their own way.”

North Barrington resident Jaime Laurita was one of the dozens of chefs who would prepare and serve their own signature sample dish to guests during the event’s Greatest Hits tasting.

Laurita said he was “absolutely mobbed” that day.

“It felt like I served at least

2,000 people,” Laurita said. “I was really swamped, but to tell you the truth, I felt at home for the first time in my career.”

Home, for Laurita, is being around music.

“All my life I’ve worked with musicians as their personal chef and I’ve learned cooking is a lot like making music – you add ‘a little of this and a little of that’ and you create something great,” Laurita said.

In addition to dishing out his personal-brand pasta with pesto, arugula, basil, hazelnuts, fresh figs and goat cheese, Laurita served sample pours from his wine line.

The open-air event included both pavilion and lawn seating options, as well as lunch and dinner packages coordinated by additional celebrity chefs.

Free wine or grilling demonstrations and book signings were included in most general admission fees.

Live music ran all day; however, large crowds gathered for performances by Phil-

lip Phillips and John Mayer in the evening. A portion of proceeds benefited Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign.

The event’s sit-down dining options included “Rock ‘N Rolls, Hot Hot Hot, Franks and Beats, a Country Cookout, I Want Candy, Farm-to-Turntable, Around the World in Four Courses, Scenes from an Italian Restaurant, and Blues Brews and BBQ.” Mansfield estimated 200 to 300 people to have attended each meal, in addition to the more than 1,000 guests whom stopped in for the celebrity tastings and evening concerts.

Thinking ahead to next year, Mansfield said she’d like to host the same event at the same venue rather than expanding another region.

“Ravinia is beautiful,” Mansfield said. “We’d be challenged to find another place as perfect for a food, wine and music event as the Chicago suburbs.”

Barrington’s White House restoration continues SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA BARRINGTON – Since August, extensive interior and exterior work has been done on Barrington’s historical White House, located at 145 West Main St. The restoration and renovation of the 116-year-old building, estimated to cost about $6.1 million, is scheduled to be complete next summer. Currently, the historic moldings and dentil work on the exterior of the house are being removed from the area next to the roof line and from the front dormer facade, original to the house, according to a news release.

This work is being done in preparation for one of the most major parts of the project – the removal of the roof, chimney and third-floor walls, the release says.

Plans call for steel supports

to be added to the side walls of the house in order to carry the heavy load of the new steel scissor truss roof system. New fire resistant cedar siding will be installed, as well as new windows and an east dormer.

The chimney and historic front dormer will be completely rebuilt, according to plans.

Once complete, a third-floor ballroom will seat up to 150 people; a new addition to the south will house an elevator, and there will be new bathrooms, as well as an at-grade entrance to the house. The basement is being excavated, while new drain tiles are being installed and a new basement floor is being poured. Broncos bring heat to homecoming

By TIM SIECK Barrington Suburban Life BARRINGTON- Fans of Barrington High School got a homecoming treat Saturday in the form of warm weather and fantastic plays by their football team. The Broncos continued their undefeated start to the season with a 56-6 win over the Schaumburg Saxons in Mid-Suburban League Conference Play.

Barrington (5-0) was nearly unstoppable once again on offense. The Broncos took a little more than three minutes to score their first touchdown of the afternoon when junior quarterback Johnny Davidson hit Dylan Bing-

ham for a 16-yard touchdown pass. On their next possession, the Broncos doubled their lead to 14-0 when Davidson hit Scotty Miller from 26 yards out.

Barrington closed out the quarter with Davidson doing the damage again, but this time with his legs as the junior signal caller ran one in from 6 yards out.

“Our offense has been clicking all season and we kept things going today,” Davidson said. “The offensive line played great and that allowed our running game to get going. Our goal this week was to get 50 points and we were able to do that. This was an all-around team effort.

We’ve been working hard in practice and that has showed in the way we are playing in games.”

The second quarter was even better for the Broncos.

Senior JT Henderson started the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run.

Davidson increased the lead to 35-0 when he connected with Cole Walsh for a 43yard touchdown.

The first half scoring finished with a 58-yard touchdown pass from Davidson to Mitchell Pfeiffer and an 18-yard touchdown run by Davidson.

The Broncos finished the half with a 49-0 lead. Barrington scored touchdowns on all seven of their first half possessions.

The starters sat out the second half which was played with a running clock because the Broncos were ahead by at least 40 points. Davidson was the star on offense with six touchdowns – four passing and two rushing. Defensively the Broncos were led by Jake Coon, who had several tackles along with a fumble recovery, and David Danhauer.

“We did our job and shut them down today,” Danhauer said. “They run the option and we put five guys on their best player and focused on that. We trusted our system and got the victory.”

Barrington coach Joe Sanchez was pleased with how

his Broncos started the game.

“I was happy with the way we came out today in all three phases against a good team who has some really good players.” Sanchez said. “This was a full team effort. The kids understand our scheme and the coaching staff had them prepared. We have a short week and have to get ready to play a really good Conant team on Thursday night.”

Prior to the football game Saturday the Broncos soccer team took on Fremd. The Broncos fell short in their hopes of a homecoming victory falling to the Vikings 3-1.

The lone Barrington goal was scored by Luke Sellers.

IN THEIR LIFE | JOEY BATLINER

By TIM SIECK Barrington Suburban Life When you have team goals like making it to state again and finishing as one of the state’s top teams, it takes a lot of talent. The Barrington golf team is fortunate enough to have a lot of talent and that includes senior Joey Batliner.

Batliner sat down with Barrington Suburban Life contributor Tim Sieck for this week’s In Their Life profile.

Sieck: When did you first realize you were a good athlete?

Batliner: I am the fourth of six children, so I grew up always playing sports with my brothers and sisters. I started to play golf when I was eight years old and it used to be a fun third sport for me. When I was about 12 years old, I figured I could actually be good at this sport.

Sieck: What has been your proudest individual moment on the

golf course?

Batliner: I would have to say making it to the IHSA state meet as a junior. I had to compete in an eight-man playoff to advance and I made some clutch putts during the playoff to advance.

Sieck: What has been your proudest team moment?

Batliner: My proudest team moment has to be when we won conference as a team last year.

Sieck: What are your post high school plans?

Batliner: I’m not sure whether or not I want to play golf in college or just concentrate on a business major. I would love to attend a Big Ten school.

Sieck: What are your goals this season?

Batliner: One of our goals this year is to make it down to the state meet as a team. We also have smaller goals like to

win all of the nine and 18-hole matches. But, our biggest goal is to place in the top two at state. If we can keep everyone healthy and continue to shoot well, we have a good shot at it.

Sieck: What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you on the golf course?

Batliner: I was golfing at the state meet and had a 20-foot putt and I four putted. I guess the nerves of being there got to me a bit and so this year I’ve been practicing putting a lot so I don’t have a repeat of that.

Sieck: Who have been your mentors and role models?

Batliner: My mentor has been my older brother, Jason Batliner. He has helped me a lot in my golf career. He has helped me with my mental game, which is a big part of golf. We caddied together at Wynstone and he loves golf as much as I do, so he would give me a lot of tips that helped my game.

Batliner, BHS golf team have sights on state meet

It’s all about the same in NFL It seems like for the past decade, or even two, we’ve been debating the quality of NFL teams. Has pro football become truly mediocre, with no more than two, three or four teams really worth getting excited about? Or is everybody just that good?

Many of us spent the better part of May, June and July bemoaning the difficulty of the Bears early schedule this year, with six of the first nine games on the road and five of those against 2013 playoff teams.

Nobody wanted to listen when I warned everyone to relax, and tried to remind Bears fans that the way things change overnight in today’s NFL, that schedule might look a lot different by the time the Bears actually get to play it.

Here we are just four weeks into the 2014 season, and not one of those teams the Bears face over their first nine games is over .500. The San Francisco and

Carolina teams that were the second and fifth seeds in the NFC playoffs last year, and ranked third and second respectively in scoring defense, are both 2-2 and now rank 13th and 17th in points allowed.

We feared the Jets and Falcons could be extremely difficult road trips and yet, through four weeks, New York is 1-3 and resides in the Bears win column, as do the 49ers, and the Falcons are 2-2, but currently ranked 31st in the NFL in total defense and 29th in points allowed.

Miami was a popular AFC preseason wild card pick.

The Dolphins started out on fire this year, upsetting the Patriots. But then they were embarrassingly bad, getting stoned in Buffalo and spanked at home by a Chiefs team that was 0-2 at the time.

Saturday on WCIU The U or at 2:30 p.m. Saturday on The U Too. to 2-2, but that’s the equivalent of beating up on the little sisters of the poor.

Buffalo was viewed as a rare winnable game for the Bears in their opener at Soldier Field, yet they found a way to lose. Buffalo went on to beat the Dolphins in Week 2, but then fell apart against San Diego and Houston to drop them to 2-2.

The Patriots still lurk at home for the Bears in Week 8. We suspect they’ll be pretty good by then, but all we know at the moment is they struggled to get by the Raiders in Week 3, and Oakland is almost certainly the worst team in the league.

Finally, there are the Pack-

ers, who’d been atrocious on defense and struggled to run the ball before coming to Soldier Field and letting the Bears run up 496 yards of total offense on them. Yet, they still found a way to beat the Bears, and by three touchdowns.

Is there a lesson in any of this? Only that the Bears are about six or seven plays over four games away from being 4-0, or 0-4. As of this writing, they were seemingly like everyone else – of course, 2-2.

And one more thing.

Through four games, we still really have no idea who the Bears are, or who their main competition is going to be as they fight for a spot in the playoffs.

It appeared after four weeks that the Bears offense was capable of playing with the best in the NFL. Or are they?

For all the plays the Bears seem to have made and all their trips up and down the field, they were just 19th in the league in total offense and 16th in points per game through four weeks. Can that get a team to the playoffs, particularly when it’s

22nd in defense and 22nd in points allowed per game? In today’s NFL it can, as long as the team makes a few big plays along the way, and as long as the bulk of its competition is as mediocre as the Bears are.

The Bears should continue to get better on offense.

Defense is the big question.

As the Bears learned from the Packers in Week 4, shootouts are awfully hard to win and even harder to control. But if you can score points, it only takes a few plays a game on defense in this league to steal wins.

The good news for the Bears through the first quarter of the season is that other than perhaps Seattle, there’s no one in the NFC who’s going to run away and hide from them. The final question is, can they be just a little bit better than the rest, because there’s still plenty of time left, and it doesn’t take much in the NFL today.
