It only takes one team to change season outlook H awk Harrelson hates sabermetrics.

The maligned play-byplay man for the White Sox prefers talking about the effort and spirit of players as a more accurate determinate of the outcomes of baseball games.

Arguing about the validity of stats and measurements in baseball is a losing battle for Hawk. If he were a batter and sabermetrics were a pitch, he’d be a tee-baller trying to hit a Michael Wacha fastball.

As Harrelson is wont to say, “He gone!”

But wait, this is a column about playoff football. What the heck does that have to do with Hawk Harrelson?

Well, nothing really. It was just a good starting point.

See, I love numbers. But unlike baseball, football numbers can be skewed.

at the stat leaders on B7 of our regular section today, and you’ll notice something peculiar.

Many of the top stat performers in the area were on teams that didn’t make the playoffs. After about a decade of tracking these stats, that is the norm in football.

There’s a lot of reasons for that. One is that teams that win a lot of games tend to rest starters in the second half of blowouts.

The teams on the losing side play starters longer, so they can accumulate more stats.

Playoff teams also tend to be deeper and spread the ball around to more players, meaning one player doesn’t get as much of an opportunity to rack up yards.

Some teams just do things others don’t. Rock Falls, for instance, throws the ball more than any other team in the area.

Naturally, the Rockets are likley to have the top passer and receiver.

So here’s a few numbers that I think matter when thinking about this season.

The first many of you saw in Tuesday’s edition – .451. That was the combined winning percentage of the 15 teams in the Sauk Valley.

I haven’t had much of a chance to test this theory, but I’d guess that is the lowest percentage we’ve had here in quite some time.

Perennial playoff teams like Amboy, Morrison and

Sterling all missed the postseason. Sterling was eligible, but missed by one playoff point. Amboy and Morrison were both hit by low numbers and injuries.

So, was this a down year for football in the Sauk Valley?

Well, to answer that, let’s look at the second of three numbers I am going to present – 4.

If you looked at the cover of this section, you know that’s how many teams qualified for the playoffs from the Sauk Valley.

In the next few pages you’ll read about the first-round matchups for Eastland-Pearl City, ErieProphetstown, Newman and Oregon.

They survived a wild year, and now have dreams of a deep playoff run.

Four is the fewers number of playoff teams the Sauk Valley has had since the IHSA expanded to

eight classes in 2001.

In the 13 years of eight classes, the Sauk Valley has averaged 7.5 teams. The last 3 years, we’ve been down, with five making it in 2011 and six 2012.

That’s 15 in a 3-year span. From 2006-2008, for contrast, we had 30 playoff teams.

That’s all fine and dandy. But, was it really a down year?

Here’s the last number to think about – 1.

It only takes a single team to change the attitude about this season.

Maybe it’ll be the EPC Wildcatz, a program that has consistently been at the top of the NUIC Northwest the last 5 years.

The playoffs haven’t been kind to the Wildcatz, but maybe that’ll change this fall.

How about the Oregon Hawks? They’re 5-4, that’s true. That also makes them dangerous. This

isn’t a 5-4 team from some weak conference.

Oregon is battle-tested, and that could make them a threat in 3A. Don’t forget about ErieProhpetstown. The Panthers have the top rusher in the area in Nick Williams, and four other kids who are also dangerous out of the backfield.

The cool thing about the Panthers is that know what they are good at, and they stick to it. Maybe they can ride that to DeKalb.

Finally, there’s the Newman Comets. They’ve rescued seasons before by standing tall in the end.

It hasn’t been easy this year, but the Comets have improved a little bit each week.

See, all it will take is one of these teams to do something special, and all those other numbers can go out the window.

I kind of like that. Heck, Hawk Harrelson would, too.

John Bothe has seen this picture before.

Five years ago, the Oregon head coach watched his team squeak past Wilmington 21-14 in a memorable Class 3A quarterfinal battle.

The Hawks and Wildcats will hook up again in 2013, this time in the first round of the 3A playoffs, Saturday night in Wilmington.

“It’s like looking at the same team we played in 2008,” Bothe said. “They run the ball very well. They run the same system. Their defense is just incredibly aggressive. It’s like they’re playing with 12 or 13 players out there. I know we’re talking about 5 years difference,

a team that relies on a stout running game. The rushing leader is junior Nick McWilliams, with 126 carries for 926 yards and 13 TDs. River Valley was 8-100 in its 12 years as a program before this season. This is not that River Valley.

The Falcons were once conference foes of ErieProphetstown. On Friday, the teams will meet in a 3A first-round playoff game.

Erie-Prophetstown was 8-0 against River Valley from 2001-2009. Current E-P head coach Chuck Milem had wins of 26-14 in 2008 and 71-48 in 2009 over the Falcons.
