Boilers get the boot Szcepaniak’s 24-yard field lifts Bruins to victory at Kewanee

KEWANEE — With time winding down and the Bruins in the red zone, St. Bede coach Jim Eustice would have preferred a touchdown, but never had any doubt that he would turn to his place-kicker Nick Szczepaniak if the moment arose.

With the game on his shoulders, the senior place-kicker planted his left foot and sent the game winning field goal 30 yards through the uprights for the 24-21 come-from-behind victory over the Kewanee Boilermakers in Three Rivers Mississippi play Friday night in Kewanee.

“I just thought of it as an extra point,” Szczepaniak said. “I was focused on playing so I was a little surprised when he called for the field goal but I was confident.”

“To be down a touchdown in the fourth quarter and go down and score, have a great defensive stop and then kick a field goal boils down to a great team win is what it was,” Eustice said. “I’m proud of Szczepaniak, he had a heck of a game.”

After starting 0-2, the Bruins have turned their season around with their third victory in a row,

which also moves them to 3-0 and places them atop the conference leader board.

Trailing 21-14 in the early goings of the fourth quarter, the SBA offense got into a groove that ended with a 23-yard scamper from back Adam Poundstone as barreled his way through the heart of the Kewanee defense and through a Boiler defensive back for the game tying score and a crucial shift in momentum.

Kewanee appeared to take control of the game with backto-back scores — the first a two yard run from junior Deshawn Mabalcon and then a 19-yard strike from senior quarterback Nick Sheets to junior Jeremy Burhon to put the Boilers up 21-14 with a quarter to play.

Poundstone trucked through the Kewanee defense for 151 yards on 23 carries and two scores including the game tieing 23-yarder in the fourth quarter.

The victory puts the Bruins on the positive side of .500 for the first time this season as they look to continue their march to the playoffs as the take on the Erie-Prophetstown Panthers at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Prophetstown.

Can’t stop Tigers Byron scores on six straight drives to beat Rock Falls

ROCK FALLS – Byron’s sweep caused all kinds of problems for Rock Falls early in Friday’s game, and runs up the middle caused all kinds of problems late in the Tigers’ 42-13 win at Hinders Field.

After a fumble on their first drive of the game, the Tigers scored the next six times they touched the ball, using a potent-as-usual running attack to rush for 448 yards.

Nolan Bielskis took a sweep to the right and went 75 yards for Byron’s first score.

After Byron recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, a pair of sweeps to the left put Byron inside the Rockets’ 10-yard line, and Justin Martinez punched it in from there.

“Our wing did a good job of getting a down block, and Nolan Bielskis broke a couple tackles,” Byron coach Jeff Boyer said. “That was good.

We knew they were going to crash in and take away [Bielskis], so that was the play to go to.”

Rock Falls began to take that

away later in the game, but the Tigers were able to run the ball up the middle, jumping out to a 21-0 lead before Rock Falls got on the board.

After being forced to punt on their first drive and seeing a touchdown called back by a penalty on the second, the Rockets scored on their third drive of the game when Isaiah Harris broke off a 30-yard run up the middle for the score.

The Rockets got another touchdown on the ground as well, when Blake Wind punched the ball in from the 1.

Rock Falls gained 102 yards on the ground on 32 carries.

The Rockets could even run when they needed to. Of the five converted third-downs Rock Falls had in the game, four came on the run.

“We were able to run the ball tonight,” Rock Falls coach Rich Montgomery said.

Logan Pillars was 9-of-22 passing for 194 yards. He had a long pass to Harris on the first Rockets’ touchdown drive, and long passes to Roger Carlson and Michael Berentes on the second scoring drive.

Rockets see positives vs. Byron I

t was an optimistic Rock Falls team that walked off the field following Friday’s 42-13 loss to Byron.

The Rock Falls-Byron game was a 51-0 Tigers win last year, which the Rockets see as a sign that things are going in the right direction.

This year, the Tigers came in ranked No. 4 in the state, and the Rockets were still able to gain 194 yards through the air, 102 more on the ground, and score twice.

Three times if you count the 38-yard pass from Logan Pillars to Michael Austin which was called back for an ineligible receiver downfield.

“We drove the ball on the No. 4 team in the state,” Pillars said, “with undersized linemen and guys who strictly play with their heart. They’re not super physical, they just want to play football.”

Just wanting to play is something Pillars said was a big part of why the Rockets are where they are right now.

Rage vs. the Machine Sterling rolls past Geneseo in one-sided rivalry romp

GENESEO – There was only one machine operating at peak efficiency on Friday night, and it wasn’t the Green Machine.

Sterling turned in a performance for the ages in rolling to a 49-7 victory over Geneseo before a stunned crowd at Bob Reade Field. It is the most points the Golden Warriors have scored against the Maple Leafs since a 64-7 victory back in 1955.

Sterling (5-0, 2-0 NIB-12 West) entered the game ranked No. 2 in Class 5A, while Geneseo (4-1, 1-1) was No. 4 in Class 4A, but it was shockingly one-sided.

“Coming here was a challenge for us,” junior quarterback Trey Morse said, “and we wanted to do this here. We didn’t want them at home. We wanted to beat them on their turf and show everybody what we really are.”

Sterling coach Jon Schlemmer noted his team did not have particularly good practices on Monday and Tuesday, but by Wednesday, the focus was back. It showed on Friday.

“That’s a good team over there,” Schlemmer said of Geneseo, “but we played probably our best game

tonight in all three phases. We knew it was going to be a great challenge, but the kids responded.”

Dukes turn up D Resilient Dixon pulls away late to beat Woodstock

DIXON – Of all the impressive details in Dixon’s eyebrow-raising 18-7 victory over Woodstock – including perhaps the team’s best defensive effort all year and an absolutely scintillating fourth quarter from running back Arthur Cox – the most gratifying for the Dukes was the resiliency they showed in pulling away for the win.

The resurgent Blue Streaks entered the contest with a 3-1 record and could have matched their best win total since 2009 with a win over the Dukes. They looked poised to do so after running back Justin Sumner showcased breakaway speed for a 57-yard touchdown early in the first quarter.

But the Dixon defense never broke from that point on, including once in the second quarter when Woodstock advanced all the way to the 1-yard line before missing a 23-yard field goal. The defensive line, anchored by 6-foot, 3-inch senior Ryan Troutman, rarely missed an assignment, containing the Streaks’ running game for the final three quarters.

“Our defense played great. Look at that goal-line stand,” Dixon coach Dave Smith said. “When

you look at the way our defense was playing, I just had to figure it out on offense.”

The win lets a little bit of the wind out of the sail for Woodstock, which won three of its first four games and was hoping to inch closer to a playoff berth with a nonconference road win. However, coach Tommy Thompson seemed to take the loss in stride.

“I thought we played pretty well in the first half,” he said. “We missed an opportunity there at the end of the half, and we have to clean up our mistakes.”

Following Sumner’s initial score, Woodstock led 7-6 for the next three quarters. Not until Cox burst through the line, seemingly out of nowhere, for a 59-yard touchdown with 8 minutes left in the game did the score finally change. Cox, who scored the game’s first touchdown early in the first quarter, added a 75-yard dash late in the fourth to seal the deal.

After running for a minus-9 yards on 12 carries over the second and third quarters, Cox amassed 176 yards on 10 fourthquarter carries and ended with 211 total. He also had 57 receiving yards.

Shutdown victory Steamers’ D makes statement in shutout of Princeton

FULTON – The offense provided the breathing room, and the Fulton Steamer defense delivered the knockout punch Friday night.

The Steamers went up by two scores late in the fourth quarter, then on the Tigers’ ensuing drive, Michael Pidde delivered a jawratttling hit on a screen pass, Austin Rash rushed in for a sack, and Erik North finished the Tigers off with an interception.

Fulton tacked on one more touchdown for an 18-0 homecoming victory in a Three Rivers crossover game.

“We know the offense isn’t always going to be able to score a lot of points,” Fulton defensive lineman Cole Grant said. “So we know we have to come up with plays on defense. It feels great to get the shutout.

“We spent a lot of time last week preparing for their offense. Going from Riverdale, who was running option stuff, to the spread this week, it took a lot of time getting prepared for it.”

Fulton (4-1) took the lead on its first drive of the game. After punishing the Tiger (3-2) defense with their running backs for 10 plays,

the Steamers took to the air. Fulton quarterback Tyler Sweenie found Tyler Bruggenwirth wide open in the end zone for a 23-yard touchdown pass. The extra-point kick failed, and Fulton went up 6-0.

“I am not sure if there was a breakdown in coverage or what, but I am glad that I made the right read,” Sweenie said. “We started the game running the ball so well, that I don’t know if they were ready for the pass.”

Despite controlling the ball in the second quarter, the Steamers were unable to score. Fulton drove to the 1-yard line during a 7-minute drive, but the Tigers forced a fumble and Blake Janssen made the recovery at the 4-yard line.

The score remained 6-0 until the fourth quarter. Streak snapper for Sherrard Tigers run over the Red Devils to first victory in 15 games

SPRING VALLEY — Everyone else may have been talking about the Sherrard streak, but the Tigers were not talking about it.

The Tigers put an end to the talk Friday night, defeating the Hall Red Devils 52-25 at Nesti Stadium to snap their 14-game losing skid dating back to Week 7 of the 2014 season.

“Obviously, our kids hear about. We hear about as coaches, just about the streak. Really, inside our program, our kids knew about it, but it wasn’t something they were concerned about. They were just concerned about each game and getting better as a team,” Adams said.

Sherrard rode the strength of its 1-2 running punch in Cole Viager and Billy McAtee who combined for 325 yards rushing and six touchdowns. McAtee had four TDs alone, all in the second half, with a total of 167 yards rushing.

“They’re explosive kids. In our offense we’ve got to get our fullback going, otherwise we’ve got some plays off that won’t work,” Adams said. “Our line did a good job, but Billy made a lot of plays on his own.”

Hall coach Randy Tieman said they knew Sherrard was bringing its running game and the Red Devils couldn’t do anything to stop it.

“We had a lot of trouble stopping the run. We had one stop tonight, I think.

Is that correct.” Tieman said. “I’ve been

talking for how long, four weeks, five weeks. If we’re not going to tackle, we’re not going to beat people. We have to tackle. It’s not like it’s not something we don’t work on. The kids have just got to want to tackle.

“We knew they were going to run the ball. They threw five passes in four games. We knew what was coming. Our kids knew what was coming.”

Hall took a 13-7 lead on the first play of the second quarter when James Mautino caught a six-yard strike from quarterback Cade Wozniak.

Viager scored his second TD of the first half and Sherrard kicker Tyler Roling added a 26-yard field to go with two PATS to put the Tigers ahead 17-13 at the half.

Sherrard opened the second half with a TD pass from Isaac Boras to Shawn Aschemann. McAtee added his four TDs in the second half to put the Sherrard route in motion.

Wozniak threw for two more TD passes, both to Steven Brust (29, 76) in the second half. Wozniak completed 13 of 26 passes for 278 yards, with Brust making seven receptions for 191 yards.

“Our passing game has been good all year and we ran the ball a little better in the first quarter, but we get behind and we get away from it a little bit,” Tieman said. “I will say that was a positive tonight, we ran the ball a little bit better first half. Obviously, the name of our game is to throw it and that’s where we move the ball.”

ERIE – Good things happen on offense when backs and linemen work together well, and the Newman Comets showed the ErieProphetstown Panthers just how well teamwork can work in a 48-13 win at Wayne Hein Field.

Comets junior running back Cade Gorzny and senior back Eli Leffelman both ran for nearly identical totals to combine for almost 250 yards on the ground.

They couldn’t have done it without a stout offensive line in front of them, which created many sizable holes for both Gorzny and Leffelman to run through. And to no surprise, both sides of the offensive spectrum credited the other for making the win possible.

“All the credit goes to the backs for running hard,” senior lineman Jacob Neisewander said. “Our backs ran like crazy tonight.”

“And to the fellow linemen for getting the blocks,” Gorzny added.

“Our linemen opened holes, and the fellow backs blocked well for me.”

The Comets outgained the Panthers 186-78 on the ground in the first half after which the Comets

(5-0, 2-0 TRAC Mississippi) led 24-6. Nathan Pierceson’s 52-yard touchdown pass to Kody Wetzell provided the Panthers’ lone score.

Gorzny ran mostly on left endarounds for 97 first-half yards, and Eli Leffelman sliced and weaved his way through the middle for 65 first-half yards.

Eight of Newman’s 23 first-half carries were good for first-down yardage and more. The Panthers had only one such run.

Gorzny accounted for all three of the Comets’ first-half scores, while Leffelman converted on all three two-point conversions. Gorzny had a pair of TD runs of 2 yards, and his first score with 0.4 seconds left in the first quarter came from 9 yards out. Hawks lose control ’Bago bounces back in second half to beat Oregon

OREGON – Desperate for a win, Oregon looked like it was on its way to one against Winnebago.

The Hawks took a 17-14 lead on a field goal with less than a second left in the first half, had double the total yardage, and then forced a Winnebago punt on the first possession of the second half.

“At that point, everything looked great for us,” Oregon coach John Bothe. “But Winnebago really stepped up.”

Did they ever.

The Indians then held Oregon to only one first down while reeling off three straight touchdowns in a 36-23 win.

“Early on, they executed well. John knows how to control games,” Winnebago coach Mark Helm said. “We had to play at a higher level in the second half.”

Jace Warkentien had 11 carries for 116 yards in the second half, including two touchdown runs and a fourth-down conversion that set up Winnebago’s final score.

“He’s an instinctive runner that can cut and get outside,” said Helm of the 3-year starter that only had six yards in the first half.

Caleb Mennen was the running back lighting it up in the first half,

cracking off a 63-yard touchdown run on Oregon’s first play after Winnebago took a 6-0 lead. With 1:30 left in the half, Mennen was stopped short of the goal line on fourth down, but wisely reached the ball over to tie the game 14-14.

“Physically, we were tired in the second half,” said Mennen, who led the Hawks on defense with 10 tackles. “We played our butts off, though. There’s nobody else I would want to play with.”

A Sawyer Foss one-handed quarterback sack forced an Indian punt, and Oregon got the ball back at its own 35-yard line with 25 seconds left in the half. Devin DeHaan’s 32-yard run got the Hawks thinking an unlikely score instead of settling for the halftime tie.

Quarterback Caid Chenoweth passed and ran the Hawks to field goal range with 0.4 seconds left on the clock. After some debate, Bothe opted for the field goal and Jared Pottorff responded with a 32-yard beauty and a 17-14 lead.

“Our execution at the end of the half was great,” Bothe said.
