OCK FALLS – It took 2 years, but I finally got called a name on Twitter that can’t be published in this column.

I guess I’m kind of hard on Rock Falls football.

I’ve many times wondered, 140 characters or fewer at a time while covering a game, why the Rockets do certain things they do.

But if you prick me, trust me, I bleed. And when I approached a group of super-emotional Rockets after their season-ending loss to Oregon on Friday at Hinders Field, I felt for the bunch as much as any other reporter would.

About an hour earlier, Austin Donoho had the most electrifying play of the night. He mishandled a kickoff at the 24 and retreated to pick it up at the 20 before getting the corner down the right sideline. Surrounded by a flock of Hawks, he cut back across the grain and outran the bunch for an 80-yard score.

FORRESTON – EastlandPearl City coach Randy Asche had mixed feelings after his Wildcatz defeated Forreston 26-7 to finish the regular season undefeated and claim a NUIC Northwest division title.

“If we’re going to make a statement in 2A, we need to clean things up,” Asche said. “The score could have been 42-7, not 26-7. We’re still angry from not making it to the second round [of the playoffs] last year.”

Playing in what is considered the best 1A league in the state, EPC made it two conference titles in a row, and Asche had high praise for his opposition.

“Forreston is a good team,” he said. “I think the winner between Lena-Winslow and Forreston is going to DeKalb.”

Playing against a team that had a decisive physical advantage, the Cardinals (7-2, 5-2) managed to take a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter after stopping EPC on its first two possessions.

Facing a fourth-and-9 at midfield, Forreston faked the punt, and up-back Robert DeVries connected with Brayden Wierzycki for a 23-yard gain. An

A first down at the 15-yard line soon became a fourth-and-20, but DeVries found Dylan

Hensley streaking down the middle for a 24-yard pass reception. One play later, DeVries scored on a 1-yard run.

“We were flat in the first half,”

said EPC’s 6-foot-3, 265-pound tackle Boden Brandt. “We have a big line, but aren’t physical enough yet. We need to get that fixed before next week.”

EPC responsed with a 65-yard scoring drive, the key play a 31-yard run by Shawn Larak, who also scored from 3 yards out to tie the game 7-7 early in the second quarter.

Later in the quarter, Max Barkalow got loose on a rocket sweep for 50 yards, and Forreston looked to take a lead into halftime. But Walter Ollie stopped Barkalow 2 feet short of a first down on a fourth-down pass reception with 3 minutes left in the half.

“That put us in a hole,” Forreston coach Denny Diduch said. “Their linebacker made a big play. We could have run the clock out and maybe gone up 14-7.”

Instead, Donny Groezinger scored on a 61-yard pass reception from Deven Heeren, and EPC took a 14-7 lead. Heeren was nearly sacked before he got

the pass off to Groezinger.

Forreston converted two fourth downs to advance to the red zone late in the third quarter. But EPC’s defense stiffened, and a hurried DeVries threw an interception in the end zone to Mike Harrington, the smallest of the Wildcatz at 5-foot-5, 140 pounds.

“We kept them in that drive with our mistakes, but our kids felt we could keep them out of the end zone,” Asche said.

Harrington’s pick seem to fire up his team, as it quickly marched downfield to take a 20-7 lead. Groezinger broke five tackles on a 24-yard touchdown run.

“We couldn’t get our offense going, and that wore us down,” Forreston’s Ross Williams said.

“Running that hurry-up offense gets them tired,” Heeren said. “I think our conditioning showed in the second half.”

Both defenses came up with fourth-down stops before the Wilcatz put the game away with a 2-yard touchdown by Groezinger late in the fourth quarter.

“They took away our fullback, and we had to get adventurous in the second half,” Diduch said. “They’re just studs in the middle.”

ERIE – An expected shootout between Orion and Erie-Prophetstown on Friday night didn’t materialize.

That was due in large part to the Panthers’ defense, and specifically, sophomore defensive end Jack Hanlon.

After spotting the Chargers a touchdown on their first possession, the E-P defense was dominant the rest of the way en route to a 28-7 victory. The Panthers (7-2) now wait to see who their opponent will be in the Class 3A playoffs, while the Chargers (4-5) saw their playoff bubble burst. “I’m amped. This is awesome,� Hanlon said. “Being a sophomore in the playoffs is pretty sweet. I’m so excited, and I hope we can go far this year.�

The 6-foot-3, 205-pound Hanlon entered the game with four sacks, but he matched that total, plus half of one he shared with linemate Kenneth Cole.

The Chargers were averaging 34.7 points per game, but their spread offense was slowed down by the tenacious Panthers. “I just wanted to get to the

Erie-Prophetstown, meanwhile, didn’t put up the crazy

fantasy football numbers it had in previous games, but was efficient, nonetheless. The Panthers put up 322 yards, all but 6 of them on the ground. Senior fullback Nick Williams entered the game with more than 1,600 yards, but was held to 113 yards on 22 carries.

Ethan Howard (11-95, TD) and Chris Bauer (8-84, 2 TDs) shared the workload this time around. “We knew we could be balanced all year, because our halfbacks are very special, and Howard shows he can finish things, and he has all year when he gets

AMBOY – The first step for slowing down a Newman Comets offense is to plug up the middle. The Amboy Clippers did that successfully Friday night at The Harbor.

But that was just Step 1. It was Step 2 that really hurt the Clippers in their season finale.

Newman’s outside running game picked up where its inside attack was stopped, as the Comets broke off four touchdown runs of at least 25 yards – and a fifth was called back for clipping – in a 48-7 win over the rival Clippers. “We owe everything we get to the line and the downfield blockers,� senior Jake Snow said. “We started out kind of iffy running inside, but we picked it up after that first penalty [on Amboy for pass interference on third down] and took advantage of our opportunities.�

They were many, as Newman (8-1, 6-0 Three Rivers North) finished off all but one of its seven drives with a touchdown, and added Nolan McGinn’s 55-yard pick-six in the third quarter.

Newman turned a short field into touchdowns on its first two series. The Comets went 40 yards in 10 plays for a 7-0 lead. After Amboy’s second short punt, Newman covered 32 yards in three plays, capped by Snow’s first long TD sprint.

The Clippers (2-7, 12-4) answered in the form of Damon Quest. The senior returned the ensuing kickoff 58 yards to the Comet 17-yard line, then caught a 19-yard TD pass from quarterback Canaan Ross on a

fade route on fourth down to pull Amboy within 14-7.

Quest had two catches for 25 yards and returned five kickoffs for a total of 120 yards. Classmate Jason Bontz also had a solid game, running 17 times for 56 yards but losing a third-quarter fumble at the goal line. Bontz finished the season 24 yards shy of the 1,000-yard mark. “Jason ran hard for us, and Damon did some nice things catching the ball and returning kicks,� Jones said. “It was nice to see them do some good things in their final game.�

After Amboy’s TD pass, it was all Newman. The Comets answered with an eight-play, 66-yard scoring drive, which also included Rude’s 45-yard sprint into the end zone nullified by Newman’s lone penalty of the night.

The defense then forced a Clipper punt, and Snow scored from 40 yards out on the second play of the next possession. McGinn’s interception return came three plays later, then the Comets opened the second half with an eightplay, 61-yard drive, capped by Rude’s 25-yard TD run during which he bowled over a pair of Clipper defenders.

ROCK FALLS – There’s documented evidence that a snake can survive decapitation.

So how scary would it be if the snake had, say, six heads?

That primal fear is what teams will have to contend with now that the Oregon Hawks clinched a playoff berth with a 41-18 victory over Rock Falls on Friday at Hinders Field.

“We’ve got a one-, two-, three-, four-, five-, six-punch in the backfield, and we’re full force,” Oregon senior Sawyer Reynolds said.

Technically, one of those heads – senior tight end Pierce Dhaese – splits wide for the Hawks (5-4, 3-3 Big Northern West). Semantics aside, Oregon showed off how deadly it can be with its roster intact.

Reynolds (7 rushes, 85 yards) and Nick Newman (20-111) both rushed for two touchdowns, and Oregon blew things open late to avenge a 41-36 loss in last season’s finale to the Rockets (1-8, 0-6).

“Last year, we ended the season heartbroken,” Reynolds said. “Going into this season,

I wasn’t going to let that happen again. We got the team together, rallied together, and we pushed through like the second-toughest schedule in the state to get in the playoffs.”

Junior Garrett Rude, who missed a game earlier with a concussion, added 119 yards and a score on 17 carries, and Ashton Rutherford, who

returned last week from an ankle sprain, had 33 yards on nine carries and a score.

“I feel like it’s all come together,” Newman said. “It was important to get them back there. They play crucial roles on both the offense and defense, and really bring the team together.”

Senior quarterback Tyler Blume was 2-for-3, hitting

Dhaese twice for 68 yards. Oregon racked up 339 yards on 57 carries, and Rock Falls, without its leading rusher, Brendon LeBarron, was one-dimensional.

It registered minus-4 yards on 16 carries, and threw the ball 48 times for 207 yards.

Four of the Rockets’ carries were sacks, the last by Newman, who flung Jake Mammosser to the ground, the proverbial nail in the coffin on Rock Falls’ penultimate drive with the Rockets down 34-18.

Mammosser was 20-for-37 for 159 yards and two touchdowns.

Tanner Mortonson got the start on Senior Night and went 8-for11 on the opening drive, but it ended on a pick on a desperation heave on third-and-19, Adam Bettner leaping to grab it at the Oregon 5.

“I’ve been behind Jake for 4 years. It just felt good to get in there and get the start. It felt good, but I was nervous, too,” Mortonson said. “It’s easy to turn it back over to Jake. He’s better than I am, and he’s been doing this so much longer that I have. I knew for the better of the team, I had to give it to him.”

Reynolds broke free for a 46-yard score, slipping a tackle at the 5 early in the third.

Despite losing their third fumble – and the second in the red zone – on the next drive, Oregon blocked the Rockets’ punt three plays later, setting up a 4-yard Newman score.

The teams traded scores, and Oregon used long drives to salt away the game.

The Hawks entered the game with 45 playoff points, the second most in the state among 4-4 teams. Cutting their teeth on the rough-and-tumble BNC West evoked a battle cry in the huddle afterward.

“Who do we have to be afraid of?” said 16-year Oregon coach John Bothe, who got his 100th win Friday night. “We’ve been on the field with teams that are as good as anybody in 3A. “Whether we can do it or not, we’ll find out next week. But there’s no reason to be going into somebody’s place and being intimidated because we’re 5-4.

OTTAWA – Sterling picked a great time for its most complete game of the season. Now it has to hope it wasn’t too little, too late.

Draque Penaflor-Heier busted loose for a 46-yard touchdown on the third play of the game. The jetquick senior added three more TDs and rushed for 195 yards in the Golden Warriors’ 38-13 romp in a must-win game Friday night at King Field.

The Warriors (5-4, 3-2 Northern Illinois Big 12 West) are playoff eligible with five wins, but are not guaranteed a playoff spot.

That will be determined by five-win teams’ playoff points – oppenents’ wins – and Sterling’s might not be high enough to get in.

“I hope we can make the playoffs, but if not, we had the best game of our lives right here,” Penaflor-Heier said. “I told the guys at halftime, ‘This is our state.

We’ve got to leave it all on the field. We have to want it more than they do.’”

Star of the game: Draque Penaflor-Heier, Sterling, 195 rushing yards, 4 TDs The Warriors did what they needed to, and did it in impressive fashion.

Sterling piled up 310 yards on the ground and outgained Ottawa (3-6, 3-2) 343-270.

The Warriors forced five fumbles, recovering four, and won the turnover battle 4-1.

“We don’t know if this is our last game or not,” said Sterling senior quarterback/linebacker Bryant Lilly, who carried 16 times for 78 yards. “Us seniors, we’ve been playing together since fifth grade. We decided to play football the way we can.

We played great. If we get in the playoffs, I think we’re going to do some damage.”

It took Sterling just 68 seconds to get on the scoreboard via PenaflorHeier’s first TD. The Pirates answered with a quick TD of their own, a 24-yard pass from

Carter Krause to Cody Stokes, and it was 7-7 with 8:30 left in the first quarter.

Penaflor-Heier scored his second touchdown with 5:48 left in the first half, this one a 26-yarder set up by his own 22-yard jaunt, and Sterling led 14-7.

It stayed that way into the second half. Josh Knie’s fumble recovery at the Ottawa 19 set up a 2-yard TD by Penaflor-Heier to make it 21-7 with 6:58 left in the third quarter.

Sterling kicker Tony Diaz, who played in the Warriors’ soccer team’s postseason loss earlier in the day, hit a 28-yard field goal with 10:41 to play to make it 24-7.

Penaflor-Heier broke a 69-yard TD run with 4:43 to play, then Logan Wharff returned a fumble for a score on Ottawa’s next play from scrimmage, making it 38-7 with 4:31 left.

“I’m very, very proud of these kids the way they came out and performed,” Sterling coach Jon Schlemmer said.

STREATOR — One team was going to walk out of the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference a winner Friday night.

That team was the Dixon Dukes.

The Dukes won a thriller, 29-27, over the host Streator Bulldogs in both teams’ final game before leaving for new conferences next year.

The Bulldogs led with less than 4 minutes to play before Dixon cashed in a 67-yard drive with a fourth-and-goal 2-yard touchdown plunge from Quinton Douglas.

Dixon finishes the season 3-6 (2-3 NIB-12 West). Streator closes with a record of 2-7 (2-3).

Dixon’s JD Gieson was a big-play machine.

The junior quarterback avoided sack after sack and turned them into positive gains and ran two fake punts for backbreaking first downs. He finished as Dixon’s leading rusher with 63 yards on 17 carries, in addition

Streator countered with its running game – namely senior workhorse Drew Muntz. He cleared the 2,000-yard plateau for his varsity career with 182 yards on 15 carries. Most of those came on two long touchdown runs. The first was from 85 yards out on a third-down draw play to give Streator an early second-quarter lead. The latter was from 55 yards away with 8:31 remaining to give the Bulldogs their final lead, 27-23.

Gieson had touchdown passes to Matt Coffey (39 yards) and Kyle LeBlanc (30 yards). Dixon earned a safety midway through the fourth, and got two short touchdown runs – including the gamewinning plunge with 3:33 remaining – from Douglas.

Coffey finished with six receptions for 90 yards, LeBlanc hauled in five catches for 119 yards, while Ryan Webb and Douglas recorded four receptions apiece.

Defensively, Matt Coffey made a gamesaving tackle late, Ben Mayes and Jakob Johnson each recorded interceptions, and senior Dane Schielein had a monstrous game in his Dukes finale with four tackles for losses and a quarterback sack. “[This win] was huge for the entire team,” Schielein said. “It’s always important to do well that last game, to make a statement, and both we and Streator are going into new conferences after struggling with our football programs. So tonight was probably one of the biggest games we’ve had in years.

“We were just out there to make a statement.”

Dixon outgained Streator 418-272 in yardage and 22-8 in first downs.

MANLIUS – Fulton came into Friday’s game at Bureau Valley with two things in mind – win to become playoff eligible, and then hope its name is called during Saturday night’s playoff pairings.

The first step was accomplished in Manlius.

Behind a rushing attack that piled up 413 yards, the Steamers earned their fifth win of the season, and first winning season since 2007, with a 55-14 victory over the Storm.

Fulton coach Patrick Lower said his team will get together on Saturday to watch the pairings. The Steamers will be on the lower end of playoff points among five-win teams, and are hoping for luck to be on their side. “It doesn’t look good,� Lower said. “We need a lot of help.

We are going to plan on being in until they tell us we are not.

Hopefully things go our way, and we can sneak in there.�

Fulton (5-4, 3-3) never trailed against the Storm (3-6, 2-4).

After taking a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, the Steamers lit up the scoreboard for 48 points

Star of the game: Austin Regenwether, Fulton, 183 rushing yards, 4 TDs in the middle two quarters to secure the win.

Austin Regenwether ran for four touchdowns (23, 29, 4, 15) and totaled a game-high 183 yards rushing, putting him over 2,000 yards on the ground for his career.

His second and third touchdown runs of the game came in the final 6 minutes of the first half, and gave the Steamers some breathing room going into the break, turning a 13-7 lead into a three-possession game.

Fulton then put the game out of reach early in the third quarter. After electing for a re-kick after Tommy Johnston’s second half kickoff went out of bounds, Jason Osborn took Johnston’s second try for 83 yards up the middle and into the end zone. “They made us re-kick, and we got the ball up in the air a little too much and [Osborn] took it back,� Bureau Valley coach Jeff Ohlson said. “It’s a situation where we didn’t do the things we needed to do.�

The Steamers weren’t done, scoring two more times in the first 5 minutes of the third quarter, taking advantage of a Storm fumble and then recovering an onside kick.

Devin Kuehl scored two of his three touchdowns in the third quarter and, along with Regenwether, went over the century mark on the ground with 141 yards. Quarterback Ethan Jones added 76 yards on seven carries. “It starts up front with our offensive linemen; they’ve done a nice job all year,� Lower said. “We’ve been having problems stopping the run,� Ohlson said.“We’ve tried about every defense imaginable in practice. We worked on tackling in practice every day. It’s frustrating for these guys, because they’ve worked extremely hard.�

The Storm’s two scores came on a second-quarter 16-yard touchdown pass from Parker Neuhalfen to Jake Smith, and a 28-yard touchdown run by Johnston in the fourth quarter.

Johnston led the Storm running game with 96 yards on 13 carries.

Daniel Walker ran for 256 yards and three touchdowns in his final game, Jordan Harris scored touchdowns four different ways, and the Milledgeville Missiles closed the season with an emphatic 62-27 victory over the AFC Raiders in Franklin Grove.

Walker’s first two TD runs answered AFC scores, and Harris, who passed for 113 yards, threw a pair of first-half scoring strikes to Caleb Skoog as the Missiles (3-6, 3-5 NUIC Upstate) took a 30-13 lead into halftime.

Harris opened the second half with an 80-yard kickoff return touchdown, then followed Walker’s third scoring scamper with a pick-six at the 8:53 mark of the third quarter to make it 50-21. Devin Biller added a touchdown run 1:21 later for a 56-21 lead, then Harris capped the scoring with a TD run midway through the fourth period.

Jake Chapman ran for 118 yards to lead the Raiders (1-8, 1-7), and Jacob Hilliker threw for 53 yards.

Warren 14, Polo 8: The Marcos’ playoff prospects looked good at halftime, as the Marcos led 8-6. But a late touchdown by the Warriors, then a late stop

proved too much for the injuryplagued Mustangs to overcome in a Three Rivers North road loss.

Andy Bird scored a third-quarter TD for Morrison (2-7, 1-5), and Noah Blacklock ran in the two-point conversion.

But Terry White led the charge for Riverdale (2-7, 2-3), scoring both second-quarter TDs and also running in both two-point conversions. His scoring runs of 5 and 35 yards led the Rams to their second straight win, and a tie for fourth in the conference.

The Thunder closed the season with a win, racking up 371 total yards in a balanced effort on the road.

West Carroll (3-6, 2-5 NUIC Northwest) ran for 172 yards and passed for 199, with Shaun Magill accounting for 255 of those yards and all four Thunder touchdowns. He ran in from 26 and 2 yards, and also threw a 38-yard TD pass to Marshall Benters and a 25-yard scoring strike to Brandon Sturtevant.

The Thunder led 14-0 at halftime, then answered a thirdquarter TD pass by Durand (0-9, 0-7) with two fourth-quarter scores.
