Mud Creek Valley Coffmans’ home since 1840 First 40 acres was purchased 176 years ago

By Vinde Wells vwells@oglecounty news.com The fertile and scenic valley of the Mud Creek in northern Ogle County was one of the things that led 21-year-old Samuel Coffman to buy his first 40 acres there in 1840.

He paid the U.S. government the going price of $1.25 per acre, and his descendants have lived there and farmed the ground ever since.

His great-great-grandson Ralph Coffman and Ralph’s son Tim now plant corn and soybeans on that land plus the 580 additional acres they own and another 3,000 they rent.

Ralph, 75, said he thinks about the 176-year legacy when he works the land.

“The Coffmans were the first ones to own this land.

The government owned it before,” he said. “You take a lot of pride in it.”

Tim agreed. “You hope you don’t screw up and lose it,” he said with a hearty laugh.

Samuel came to Ogle County from Hagerstown, Maryland, and his report about the land with its abundant springs, woods, and good soil must have been persuasive.

“The Coffmans were the first ones to own this land. The government owned it before. You take a lot of pride in it.”

Ralph said Samuel apparently knew someone already living in Ogle County and that prompted him to make the trip west.

“There was a big push in Maryland to come here,” he said. “This was a land of opportunity. He had land on the Potomac River, but it wasn’t productive.”

At one point, Samuel owned 1,000 acres.

Samuel’s son Addison, a survivor of a diphtheria epidemic that claimed six of his brothers and sisters, raised cattle and the crops to feed them. He also sold bulls.

Addison’s son Frank, Ralph’s grandfather, continued the operations.

Finances were sometimes tight, but Frank saw the farm safely through the austerity of the 1930s.

“He cashed in a life insurance policy during the Depression to pay the taxes,” Ralph said.

His son Floyd took over the

farming in the late 1930s and implemented conservation practices, a innovative idea at the time.

Those were continued and enhanced by his son Ralph and grandson Tim. “Conservation was important to Grandpa,” Tim said. “It is to me, too.

For his efforts Floyd was named Ogle County Conservation Farmer of the Year in 1963.

Ralph went into farming full-time with his father Floyd after attending Iowa State University.

Besides raising grain, they bought and finished feeder cattle.

Ralph discontinued the

feeder cattle operation in 1983.

Tim had a beef cow herd and raised cattle until 1987.

Ralph recalled a memorable experience he had while attending ISU. In September of 1959 when he was a freshman, he shook hands with Nikita Khrushchev, then the Premiere of the Soviet Union. This old photo shows oats being threshed on the Coffman farm.

Khrushchev was making a visit to the U.S. and one of his stops was the university, known for its agricultural program.

“A bunch of us pushed open a window and stuck our hands out,” Ralph said. “He came over and shook hands with us.”

Generations of Coffmans are buried in family cemetery One of the things that makes the Coffman farm unique is the family cemetery on a high limestone bluff overlooking the surrounding scenic woods and farmland.

The cemetery was started in 1860 when diphtheria took the lives of six of Samuel Coffman’s 11

children in three weeks.

Charles, who had hunted gophers there, asked to be buried on “the bluff.”

He and his siblings were laid to rest there and several other family members have been buried there in the ensuing generations.

World War I veteran Dr. Sam Coffman is there,

as well as World War II Navy Hellcat fighter pilot Carroll F. Coffman, Ralph Coffman’s uncle, who was killed during a training exercise.

According to family history, Native Americans used the bluff as a camping ground when Samuel Coffman settled there.

Buttels continue century of tradition on family farm

By Vinde Wells vwells@oglecounty news.com Louis Buttel and his son Mark are continuing a century-old family tradition, farming the same ground north of Leaf River that three previous generations have lived on and worked.

Maintaining that tradition is important to both men.

“It’s great to be able to say we’ve kept the farm in our family. I’m still proud of it.

I’ve lived here all my life,” said Louis, 60. “I’m doing the best I can to pass it on to him [Mark].”

Mark agreed. “There’s not many family farms left,” he said, noting that many of them have been gobbled up by super-sized farming operations.

Louis said keeping the family farming tradition has been important throughout the generations.

John’s father Evert Buttel helped him buy the farm in 1904 from the Grady family.

John had three sons, Walter, Louis’ father, Edward, and Laverne.

Wanting each of them to have a start, John bought two more 120-acre farms so each of them would have one.

He also made sure each farm was mortgaged, to start his sons out on equal footing.

Two houses stand on the property - the large square farmhouse John built in 1915 and a smaller house nearby.

Another house once stood on the property as well, Louis said, but that one was moved to a farm a short distance away.

John and Walter both milked cows, farmed with horses, and raised hogs and chickens.

Walter quit milking in 1965.

The Buttels also had a side business doing custom corn shelling for neighboring farmers.

John paid cash —$1,200 — for his first tractor and cultivator, which Louis has kept.

The money came from selling a half a crib of shelled corn.

Louis and Mark also work off the farm as truck drivers and hope to start their own trucking business.

Louis enjoyed growing

up on the farm, with his grandparents living nearby in the smaller home.

His grandfather died in 1956, about the time Louis had his first birthday.

“He said he wanted to live long enough to see me walk.

I walked around his bed and he died just a little while after that,” Louis said.

He remembered that his mother Pauline, now 92, worked hard to keep her family well-fed.

“Mom baked every Saturday morning,” he said.

“She raised a big garden every year and had berry beds and a patch of rhubarb.”

Farm has been Abels’ heritage since 1875

By Vinde Wells vwells@oglecounty news.com Farming is Gary Abels’ heritage along with the 200 acres he owns southwest of Forreston.

It all started before he could even walk.

“Mom and Dad milked 21 cows by hand,” he said.

“They took me to the barn with them in a baby buggy.”

That barn, which is still used for milking, was built by his great-grandfather in the 1890s for $1,000, a great deal of money at that time.

The lumber for it was floated down the Mississippi River from Wisconsin to Savanna, then transported by train to Harper, and finally brought by horse and wagon the last few miles to the family farm on Townline Road.

The farm has been in the Abels family since 1875 when Gary’s greatgrandfather Herman purchased it from his wife Annie’s father.

Herman, born in 1860, was the youngest son of Harm and Antje Abels, who emigrated to the United States from Stapelmoor, a small village in Ostfriesland

Harm and Antje, both in their early 40s, sailed to America in 1854 with their seven children, who ranged in age from 16 to less than a month old.

Like many other Ostfreisian immigrants of that time, the Abels family came to escape poverty and compulsory service in the German army. Six of their children then were sons.

Herman and his two older sisters were born after they settled in the U.S. After arriving at New York’s Ellis Island, the family traveled to Freeport and then on to the area between German Valley and Ridott.

Harm worked as a farmhand for two years before buying a farm a few miles southwest of where Gary and his wife Joanne now live.

built in the 1850s is now the spacious kitchen of the home where they raised their two children Dorene and Chad.

A spring on the farm was once used by the nearby Forreston Grove Presbyterian Church as site for special programs.

Gary has lived on the farm all of his life and appreciates working the same land as his ancestors.

“It’s neat — a lot of people don’t get to do that,” he said.

“I love getting out on the tractor.”

Chad started farming with him this year and milks

about 30 cows — Holsteins, Jerseys, and Dutch-belted.

They raise corn, soybeans, and alfalfa on their land.

The farm passed, in turn, from father to son through the generations.

Gary’s grandfather Evert Abels and his father, also named Herman, bought horses from the West and broke them for riding, driving, and farm work. They were delivered to Forreston by train.

One team of white draft horses ended up with Barnum & Bailey’s Greatest Show on Earth.

Evert remained reluctant to embrace tractors when they became available, preferring instead to work with horses.

His son, Herman insisted, however, and they bought their first in 1940.

Evert practiced up on his tractor-driving skills by driving it around and around the corn crib.

Gary recounted that his grandfather was more progressive in his attitude about crops.

He was one of the first farmers in the area to replace timothy grass with alfalfa,

and as a result was one of only a few who had a hay crop during a drought in 1933.

Evert was also one the first to try planting commercial seed corn.

Besides milking cows and breaking horses, he also raised hogs and beef cattle.

Evert’s wife Lena raised chickens, ducks, and geese, as well as tending a large vegetable garden.

Tiny Herman Abels started life in dresser drawer by cook stove From page 8 Herman was born three months early and weighing only three pounds, she wrapped him in cotton quilt batting and kept him in a dresser drawer by the cook stove.

Evert and Lena were generous-hearted and took her brother’s three children into their home after their

mother died.

Besides helping on the farm, young Herman earned money from digging potatoes and delivering them to customers in town for 25 cents a bushel.

At the age of 12, he also worked in the quarry on the family farm for $1 a day.

Herman loved horses and had wanted to be a cowboy.

carried on the tradition of hard work.

She raised chickens and sold the eggs to the general store in Harper. She also gardened, helped with milking, and fed the calves.

Gary and Joanne’s daughter an son-in-law Dorene and Kevin Shores has compiled detailed genealogies of the Abels family as well as other branches of their family.

Harm also had three daughters.

Herman Abels, Gary’s father, loved his pony and his dog. He rode the pony to the country school he attended, but sometimes neither one of them wanted to go.

Herman’s mother Lena sometimes had to resort to threatening the pony with a willow stick. Herman once coaxed the pony into the kitchen for sugar lumps.

What does it take to become a Centennial Farm?

The Illinois Department of Agriculture’s Centennial Farms and Sesquicentennial Farms programs honor generations of farmers who have worked to maintain family farms in the state.

To qualify for Centennial Farm status, an agricultural property must have been owned by the same family of lineal or collateral descendants for at least 100 years.

A lineal descendant is a person in the direct line of descent, such as a child or a grandchild.

A collateral descendent is not a

direct descendent, but is otherwise closely related, such as a brother, sister, uncle, aunt, nephew, niece or cousin.

Applicants who complete a form and meet all requirements of the Centennial Farms program receive an official Centennial Farm sign suitable for outdoor display and a certificate bearing signatures of the Governor of Illinois and the Director of the Illinois Department of Agriculture.

A $50 application fee is charged to offset the cost of the sign.

The Sesquicentennial Farms Program recognizes farms that have been held by descendants of the same family for 150 years or more.
