Discharged Storm Orion tackles BV in battle of state-ranked teams

MANLIUS — The visiting team found the Achilles heel of the Bureau Valley Storm for the second straight week in Three Rivers play as Orion ran all over the Storm in the Chargers 42-20 victory Friday in Manlius.

It was back and forth early, but the BV Storm got out front for the second straight week on a six yard run from sophomore running back Peyton Moore for a 7-0 BV lead. That was quickly erased 3:52 seconds later on a 13 yard pass to senior running Mitchel Blackert to knot it up just before the beginning of the second quarter.

Midway through the second quarter Orion switched up their game plan and began to rely heavily on the run and that would be their saving grace as the worn out Storm seemed to lose a step on the defensively line that allowed for a strong surge from the Orion offensive line.

“Once we got to feel them out and figure out what they were doing defensively we were able to settle in and get things going offensively after starting out slow coming off of the rain

delay,” Orion coach Chip Filler said. “They did some nice things but our guys kept pounding.”

The adjustments made by the Chargers were the right ones as they broke scored three straight touchdowns culminating with a 2 yard run from senior running back Tavian Moniski for a 28-14 Charger advantage.

“I think you’re seeing the effects of three tough games in a row. I think what you’re seeing is just some kids that are wore out,” BV coach Spencer Davis said. “We’re tough and we’re working hard but when you’re running backs and receivers are the same guys as your defensive backs and linebackers they’ll get a little beat up.”

Angry birds Cardinals run roughshod over overmatched Clippers

FORRESTON – A win over Forreston simply wasn’t in the cards for Amboy-LaMoille.

Neither was hanging with the Cardinals for any length of time, as the Clippers were handled in all phases of the game on the way to a 55-7 loss before a homecoming crowd on Friday night.

Forreston racked up 347 rushing yards and scored on its first six possessions in building a 42-0 halftime lead, ensuring a running clock for the entire second half.

“We got our [butts] kicked in every phase of the game,” Amboy coach Gary Jones said. “The way we played was the way we practiced all week. We were lackadaisical, we weren’t mentally ready coming in. They kicked our [butts], that’s the bottom line.”

Forreston displayed the whole package. It ran at will in the first half, and the defense held Amboy to 20 yards before the break. The Cardinals didn’t commit a turnover, had just three penalties for 15 yards, and forced the Clippers into three turnovers.

“The boys played really well,” coach Denny Diduch said. “They came out playing hard, were able

to limit their mistakes, and then when some of our guys get out in the open, there’s not too many guys that are going to catch them.”

Leading the way for Forreston (4-0, 3-0 NUIC Northwest) was junior running back Gavin Fuchs, who had seven carries for 179 yards, including a 77-yard TD run, all in the first half. He was part of a wave of backs who sliced and diced the Amboy defense at will.

“We’re so deep,” Fuchs said, “but it’s really about our linemen. They threw some amazing blocks.”

Amboy (2-2, 2-2) never got much of anything going all night. The lone successful drive came in the fourth quarter, when the Clippers marched 74 yards in 15 plays for a score. Backup running back Austin Lundquist scored from 4 yards to allow Amboy to avoid a shutout.

Memories flood back T

here are moments from your high school days that are etched into your brain that you’ll never forget.

On Friday night, I returned to the site of one of those moments. It was at the Forreston football field, where the Amboy Clippers took on the Cardinals in an NUIC Northwest matchup.

This game, won by Forreston 55-7, didn’t quite pack the punch as when the teams met in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs 37 years ago. The Clippers won that game 20-17 in overtime, then beat Stockton and Princeville the next two games before losing to Decatur St. Teresa in the state finals.

None of that would have been possible had Amboy not slipped past Forreston in the first round.

It was a game that had a little bit of everything. Here are a few highlights: The Cardinals pulled a bit of chicanery to score the game-tying touchdown early in the fourth quarter to tie score at 14-14. Forreston wide receiver Scott Stykel hauled in a 44-yard TD, and he was all alone on the play.

Stykel was in the huddle, only to be yelled at by his coaches to get off the field. He stopped just short of the sideline, however, and when the play began, he was uncovered, caught a pass from

New attitude Rockets rally to victory after Hawks streak to lead

OREGON – In a 33-21 win over Oregon, Rock Falls proved it is a different team and a different program than in previous decades.

Ahead 13-0 early in the second quarter and in possession of the ball, the Rockets looked to be in complete control of the game.

However, a fumbled pitch gave the ball back to Oregon.

Three consecutive touchdowns by the Hawks and a few mistakes

by Rock Falls, it was 21-13 in favor of Oregon. Rocket fans accustomed a generation of losing had to wonder if this game was destined to be like the days of old.

“I thought we were in good shape,” Oregon coach John Bothe said.

In what has been a rebirth of sorts this season, Rock Falls got up off the canvas and was able to deliver the decisive blows the rest of the game, shutting down the Hawk running game and scoring three TDs. “It’s emotional,” said undersized lineman Rollie Elder. “We just do our job and don’t give up. The support we have walking down the hallways at school and from the fans here means a lot. I remember how it was when I was a freshman.”

Quarterback Logan Pillars was brilliant in directing the Rockets

on their scoring drives and avoiding sacks. He was 18-for-27 for 276 yards passing with two touchdowns to Roger Carlson and one to Mike Berentes.

“You give Logan time and he’s tough,” Rock Falls coach Rich Montgomery said. “He has nice receivers to throw to and we were also able to run.”

Isaiah Harris had rushing touchdowns of 9 and 8 yards, as the Rockets had over 400 yards of total offense.

Rock Falls caught a break to take a 7-0 lead. Berentes caught a Pillars pass at the 5-yard line, but fumbled it into the end zone. With a group of Hawk defenders nearby, Berentes beat them all to the ball.

Trailing 13-0 after a Carlson score, Oregon used the legs of Jacob Cullen to tie the game. Pace makers Sterling offense beats to faster drum than Cavs can handle

STERLING – The only group of Sterling High Schoolers that kept better tempo than the football team was the band, and even that might be a stretch.

The Golden Warriors ran a nohuddle offense to perfection in a 49-0 demolition of LaSalle-Peru on Friday at Roscoe Eades Stadium to open NIB-12 West play.

“We try to get a play off every 15 seconds,” Sterling receiver Turner Morse said. “We wear teams down by doing that.”

The Cavaliers (1-3, 0-1) looked to be gassed after the first quarter, one in which the Warriors scored three touchdowns on a combined 13 plays. Quarterback Trey Morse hooked up for his first of two touchdown passes to Turner Morse to open the scoring, then Latrell Vaughn and Nyrel Sullivan ran for scores of 18 and 39 yards, respectively.

Trey Morse accounted for four total touchdowns, passing for three and running for one. On his second scoring pass to Turner Morse, the pair took advantage of the L-P corner biting on Reid Blackburn’s slant route, and Trey dropped in

the 34-yard pass.

“I’m a lot more comfortable four games in,” said Trey Morse, a firstyear varsity QB. “They make it easy on me with our running game, and our tempo is so fast that defenses get confused. We do a bunch of tempo segments in practice, and it’s paying off.”

Sterling (4-0, 1-0) scored on its first six possessions, not counting the kneel down at the end of the first half. The Warriors gained 338 yards on the ground, and another 115 through the air for 453 total yards. Sterling now has four straight games with more than 400 yards of offense for the first time in program history.

“We saw on film they ran that nohuddle, but it’s another thing to actually play defense against it,” L-P coach Jose Medina said. “It’s probably the fastest offense we’ve seen.”

L-P starting quarterback Carey Kennedy didn’t play as he is recovering from a shoulder injury. Wide receiver Tyler Martyn filled in, but wasn’t much of a passing threat. He threw for 36 yards on a 4-for-10 effort.

A normally pass-first offense was left scrambling to find an identity, and hoped to mount a rushing attack. That didn’t work, as the Cavaliers gained 10 yards on 27 carries.

Royal return for Lindell Senior’s kickoff return, interceptions spark Tigers past Hall

PRINCETON — Jeremiah Lindell was king on 2016 Homecoming Night for Princeton Friday at Bryant Field.

Lindell, who transferred to PHS this spring from Joliet, gave the Tigers the spark they needed against the arch-rival Hall Red Devils with an 82-yard kickoff return to start the second half.

Bret Emmerson added three more touchdowns, finishing with four on the night, as the Tigers ran away from Hall 35-7.

Lindell also had two pass interceptions, returning them for a combined 80 yards.

“I think I was just feeling it.

Coach got me in the mood. I was taking ‘em,” Lindell said. “It’s really big. It feels lovely, man. Coach told us don’t be satisfied, so I won’t be.”

“The kickoff was big. We talked about not kicking it deep. At some point we had to be able to kick it deep and cover. We changed some kids up and thought we could cover,” Hall coach Randy Tieman said.

The Red Devils, who relied on the passing game behind junior QB Cade Wozniak (24 of 46, 249 yards), got on the board with a 5-yard run by Anthony Buchanon

on a lateral with 4:55 left in the third quarter. Buchanon added the PAT as Hall closed within 21-7.

Then it was back to Boom time for the Tigers, turning the ball into hands of Emmerson. He added a 6-yard score late in the third quarter and a 1-yard run with 2:11 left in the game with Tyler Hammitt adding both PAT kicks.

“Coach told us to come out with more intensity. We didn’t bring it at all first (half ). Second half we brought it all,” Lindell said.

“The kids did a great job responding at halftime," said PHS coach Jesse Snyder. “Came out, made a big play and continued to play offense and continued to play defense when we needed to get it done.”

Contentment elusive Wildcatz not satisfied with blowout victory over Marcos

POLO — Following his team’s 39-6 victory at Polo, EastlandPearl City coach Randy Asche rhetorically wondered “you know a lot of times, when you win by 33 but still have a bad feeling about it?�

Actually, most coaches probably don’t know that feeling.

Then again, most coaches don’t have a state title under their belts with aspirations of another deep postseason run in their near future.

The Wildcatz (4-0), ranked fifth in Class 2A, remained undefeated on the season thanks to their big, fast, strong defense and a bruising offensive line that paved the way for 240 rushing yards. EPC’s offensive line, bookended by tackles Peyton Asche (6-foot-5, 320 pounds), and Addison Keltner (6-7, 325), was simply too much for Polo’s defensive linemen to handle.

Keegan Schubert led the way for EPC with 104 rushing yards on 22 carries, and Jayden Kempel added 83 yards and two scores on just nine carries.

Peyton Asche, however, echoed his father’s sentiments

about not being fulfilled with the victory. “We really wanted to be able to get off the ball and get helmets on them. We struggled with that early on,� he said. “We got a little better at it in the second half, but we still could have done better.�

Much of the Asches’ frustration from the game likely came from EPC’s failed ability to fully capitalize on a 14-minute edge in time of possession in the first half. The Wildcatz recovered two fumbles on kickoffs, allowing them to rack up 36 offensive plays in the half, compared to just 12 for Polo, which fell to 2-2 with the loss.

However, the Wildcatz were turned away from the end zone on a couple of occasions, and went into halftime ahead by just two scores at 22-6.

Polo quarterback Braiden Soltow broke off a 73-yard touchdown run on Polo’s first play from scrimmage, but that was essentially the only highlight for the Marcos’ offense in the game. Polo finished the game with more turnovers (five) than first downs (three), and managed just 40 yards of offense following Sotlow’s run.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Comets got second-quarter touchdowns from Eli Leffelman, Luke Olson and Cade Gorzny in a 28-0 win at Kewanee on Friday.

Leffelman rushed 16 times for 128 yards.

Koltyn Jones tacked on a second-half touchdown by recovering a fumble in the end zone.

Milledgeville 53, Orangeville 6: Milledgeville scored 1:26 into the game on a Buddy Bibler 20-yard touchdown run and never looked back.

The Missiles added scores from Kyle Forbes, Carson Boyer, Nate Rahn and Forbes again before making it 40-0 at halftime on an 11-yard pass from Brexton Flynn to Dylan Alexander.

Cade Gusloff and Rahn added scores in the second half.

Fulton 42, Riverdale 0: Michael Pidde scored four touchdowns in a rout of the Rams.

Pidde reached the end zone on runs of 1, 13, 30 and 1 yards.

Rockridge 50, Morrison 14: The Rockets gained 413 yards on the ground and scored 21 points in the first quarter and 22 more in the second.

Morrison got a pair of touchdowns from Ethan Fishbach, reeling in a 68-yard pass from Reilly Dolan in the first quarter and breaking off an 85-yard kick return in the second.

St. Bede 51, Sherrard 15: The Bruins won their second straight game, improving to 2-0 in the TRAC Mississippi and 2-2 overall with a win on the road Friday at Sherrard.

ROCKFORD – The Rockford Lutheran monkey is still on the Dixon Dukes’ backs after a 38-21 loss to the Crusaders.

Other than a pair of late fourthquarter scores, the game had its fair share of miscues on both sides of the ball. The Dukes (3-1, 3-1 BNC) turned the ball over seven times and was 1-for-14 on third-down conversions.

In a game which featured 15 punts from both teams and 22 failed third-down conversions between the two – out of 23 tries – the Dukes couldn’t capitalize on Crusaders’ mistakes on top of not mustering much with some new plays on offense into the fold.

“We knew they were a good team,” Smith said. “They were 1-2, and now they’re 2-2 [2-2 BNC], and they’re back to being a good

team. We knew they were a good team.

They had some really tough games up front, but they didn’t do anything different.

Ryan “We’re disappointed Troutman with last year’s losses, and disappointed with this year’s loss,” Smith added. “We did not play Dixon Football at key moments.”

Junior running back Arthur Cox ran a 33-yard end-around on the Dukes’ first play from scrimmage, but the Crusaders held the Dukes offense to an average of just more than 2 yards per running play for the rest of the first half.

That first play from scrimmage led to a Kaylon Westmorland 20-yard TD reception from Noah Wilcox just 1 minute into play for a quick 7-0 lead.

Despite allowing an average of 5 yards per play themselves, the Dukes defense had trouble keep-

“We ran a couple of new formations which didn’t go too well,” Troutman said. “Our defense was solid. We slacked on offense. We couldn’t work out as a team. We had some good blocks, but when you get one good block, someone right behind you blows another block.”

ERIE – After a stalemate ensued in the second quarter, Erie-Prophetstown and Ottawa Marquette entered the third quarter with momentum hanging in limbo.

Two plays and less than 30 seconds into the third quarter that had changed just enough to alter the direction of the rest of the game.

The Crusaders rode the good fortune of a pair of plays to a 42-20 win against their former Big Rivers foe at Wayne Hein Field.

“You couldn’t have started the third quarter any worse,” ErieProphetstown coach Chuck Milem said. “We give up a fumble on the first play, and then they score on the next one.

“It put them up by two scores, which was huge. We felt in a one score game that our offense would go toe-to-toe with them, and hopefully the defense would make something happen.”

The Panthers (1-3) started the third quarter on their own 36.

On the first play, trouble in the exchange between quarterback Nathan Pierceson and Garrett Passmore led to a fumble, which was recovered by Marquette’s Sam Donahue.

“I am not sure what happened there,” Passmore said. “I don’t know whose fault it was. It’s a team game though, and we all have to take responsibility.”

On the next play, Ryan Donahue busted through the middle for a 35-yard touchdown run for Marquette (4-0). The score and extra point kick put the Crusaders up 21-6.

“We’ve just are not doing the small things on defense,” Milem said. “Overall, this was good game for us, but we have to improve on a lot of things.”

Marquette chewed up yards on the ground between big runs by Ryan Donahue and Zach Dyche. In all, Marqutte rushed for 320 yards.

Ryan Donahue had 202 yards, with 157 coming in the second half, and Dyche had 170 yards and four touchdowns.
