Music and movies
Shop early for CDs and DVDs By Kimberly Watley Special to the Gift Guide
W
hatever kind of music or movies is on your loved one’s wish list, one thing is clear, what’s popular will be hard to come by for last-minute shoppers. This year, there are 6 fewer shopping days than in 2012, because Thanksgiving falls later. Laura Kibble, Dixon Walmart’s zone merchandise supervisor, said layaway is back and will be a blessing for those who shop early. “We have everything, any hot item, be it CDs, DVDs or toys, in stock early, but after Black Friday, we may not be able to get more,” she said. All layaway items must be picked up by Dec. 13. Other-

huge selection of movies. They have both previously viewed and new movies, as well as video games for sale. “Getting used titles guarantees it will be a little cheaper than buying brand new,” Store Manager Amy Harris said. “We can order titles you can’t find, though some out-of-produc-
tion movies are unavailable. It is surprising what we can still get. Just ask.” With costs as low as $1.50 up to $9.99, she said, although they are used, they are guaranteed. Prices for new releases vary and special orders are for purchase only. Turnaround time for orders is between 2 and 10 days, though she recommends shopping early also to compensate for the busy season. “The Conjuring,” “The Heat,” “Ironman,” “Wolverine,” “Grownups 2,” “Man of Steel,” “Fast and Furious 6,” “The Croods,” “Turbo” and “Planes” are among the titles her customers are really excited about, she said. Harris also sees a popular trend among TV series rentals and purchases. “A lot of them are cable shows, so people hear the buzz and end up renting it when it comes out.
‘Breaking Bad,’ ‘Sons of Anarchy,’ ‘Dexter,’ ‘Downton Abbey,’ all of them are really popular. ‘Duck Dynasty’ kind of exploded in the last 6 months. We have old shows like the ‘Simpsons’ and ‘Lost’ that people really like, too.” For children, Family Video offers free movie rentals on most titles, without additional purchase throughout the year. “They like ‘Sponge Bob,’ ‘Scooby Doo,’ ‘Strawberry Shortcake,’ ‘Dora,’ ‘Arthur,’ ‘The Wiggles,’ ‘Thomas the Train’ is a big one, and, of course, ‘Sesame Street.’” As for video games, Harris said, “A lot of parents like to try the games as a rental first. That way if they beat it in a day, or don’t like it, or if it’s too hard, or just not what they thought it was, they aren’t stuck with it.” When in doubt, both managers recommend gift cards, which allow a recipient to choose their own gift.

and shopping are integral parts of the holiday season, but very often it is the music being played over the airwaves that sets the tone for the festivities to come. Christmas music has been enjoyed for decades and certain compositions are widely loved and played year after year. The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, who compiles lists of the most popular songs, lists “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” and “Winter Wonderland,” both of which were written in 1934, as the oldest and most popular tunes. The newest popular song is “Wonderful Christmastime,” composed in 1979. Though personal preference often determines a holiday playlist, the following tunes are of the more popular Christmas songs: • “The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)” - Mel Torme, Robert Wells • “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” - Fred Coots, Haven Gillespie • “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” - Ralph Blane, Hugh Martin • “Winter Wonderland” - Felix Bernard, Richard B. Smith • “White Christmas” - Irving Berlin • “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!” - Sammy Cahn, Jule Styne • “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” - Johnny Marks • “Jingle Bell Rock” - Joseph Carleton Beal, James Ross Boothe • “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” - Walter Kent, Kim Gannon, Buck Ram • “Little Drummer Boy” - Katherine K. Everything from golf to guns Area stores have perfect gifts for sports enthusiasts By John Kermott Special to the Gift Guide
H
ave you ever considered giving your community a Christmas
present? One way you could do that is by buying some of your family’s gifts at local stores. Sure, it’s easy to shop online and have your gift delivered to your house. But if you’re driving past a store anyway, it may even save time, over online shopping, to just stop in and have the salespeople help you find exactly what you’re looking for. Sporting goods often are on a family’s wish list, and the Sauk Valley has a range of
such stores with some of the most popular gifts this year. Disc golf is one of the fastest growing sports in America, and Sterling has one of the best disc golf courses in the country at Sinnissippi Park, so disc golf gear is a welcome gift for many. Air Play Sports & Espresso at 115 E. Third St. in Sterling stocks all the gear a disc golfer could want. Just like the clubs in regular golf, there are discs that are drivers, discs for midfairway, discs for pitching, and for putting, and there are gear bags for carrying them all.

am probably the least likely person in all of our area to write about current style and what’s considered “fashionable” for the holidays. Thankfully, I found some professionals to help me sort out what is classic and what is trendy. They can help anyone put together a beautiful ensemble for a party, or buy gifts that your loved ones will treasure. Every one of the folks in these stores offers timely advice for putting together a total look that is on target for this year.

In our store, we sell the main television brands, Panasonic, Samsung and LG, because they last longer and generally have better customer satisfaction.” He also recommends that buyers select items from stores that have their own service departments. Places, such as Clover Hills, that have their own service departments generally have quicker, more reliable service, without having to send items to a different location.

OUYA This sleek, new, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean-powered micro-console started life as a Kickstarter campaign, got funded quickly, and hasn’t looked back since. There are more than 400 games available for OUYA, ranging from racing, to role-play, to action – every one of which you can try for free, which means never having to shell out good money for a not-so-good game. Some games stay free after the trial period, others you’ll have to buy. Aside from taking a long time for the initial setup, OUYA works flawlessly, and its open-source platform makes it easy to upgrade and add on later. Comes with a one Bluetooth wireless controller.

Nintendo 2DS From the name, one might think that the 2DS would have preceded the 3DS, but it’s actually Nintendo’s latest and greatest handheld console. The new 2DS has dispensed with the 3DS’s hinge, which makes it harder to break. And its slight wedge shape gives it a tablet-like look and feel. The 2DS can play most DS games, all 3DS games (minus the 3D effect), including “Pokemon X and Y” and “The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds.” So if you’re a first-timer and are looking to jump into handhelds, this is a high-entertainment-value, relatively inexpensive way to go. Comes with an SD card, wall adapter, stylus, AR cards, and access to the Nintendo eShop. GAMING continued on 264

MCT News Service
Skylanders Swap Force is the newest Skylanders game. The main feature is that you can create your own characters by swapping the tops and bottoms of existing ones.
Pokemon have been around since 1996, and they seem to get better – and more popular – every year. The new “Pokemon X and Pokemon Y” keep the familiar role-play elements, leveling up, vast territory to explore, grand story line, and the fun of collecting cute little critters. But now there are more battles, more evolution, and tons more features. Start by picking a gender and then one of three starter Pokemon: Chespin (grass type), Fennekin (fire type), or Froakie (water type). As the game progresses, you’ll battle other trainers and Pokemon. kids or those who just want to skip the battles and go right to the roleplaying, this is a series of mini-games, where players interact directly with the Pokemon – petting, giving treats and playing with them. Cost: Available in the 3DS/2DS shop for about $39.99
Skylanders Swap Force The Skylanders are invading again, but this time they’re coming apart at the seams. Skylanders Swap Force is the newest Skylanders game and the main feature is that you can create your own characters by swapping the tops and bottoms of existing ones. For example, if one of your characters has an arm cannon and tire feet but you’d rather have the tentacle feet from another character, you
can make the switch. Small magnets keep the tops and bottoms of the new figures together during play, but easily pull apart whenever you want. Combining characteristics and creating new characters opens up new areas in the game. The 16 Swap Force characters create 250 combinations, 16 new Core characters, 8 LightCore characters, and more. And not to worry, all your old ones – including Giants – will work with Swap Force. Cost: $74.99 for starter packs, $14.99 for SWAP Force figures, and $9.99 for Core figures Website: skylanders.com A final note: As we move into the holiday season, be sure to check the Entertainment Software Rating Board (esrb.org) for reliable, bias-free ratings and game reviews.

Throw the perfect holiday pairing party Wow guests with plenty of tasty appetizers and beverages
F
Family Features
rom cookies and milk to the partridge in a pear tree, the holidays are filled with classic pairings. This year, gather family and friends together and ring in the season with a themed party that celebrates famous couplings. A themed party always calls for a little extra creativity to wow guests and ensure a great time is had by all. Since what you serve is always a key ingredient to a successful soiree, plan to have plenty of tasty appetizers and beverages available as soon as guests arrive. Try this recipe for Mini Steak Skewers with Smoked Paprika Aioli, a smoky flavor that pairs perfectly with Black Box Wine’s new Red Elegance. Juicy red fruit, ripe blueberry and the smoothness of sweet chocolate is a winning combo with the savory steak that guests will surely adore.
Simple tips for your festive fete While planning your themed gathering, make sure to highlight pairs that evoke the holiday spirit. Try some of these hosting tips to make your pairing party the event of the season:
n Couples in costume: Encourage couples to dress similarly and in classic holiday fashion. For example, some may show up in matching holiday sweaters or as a famous couple from a holiday movie. n Cheese and wine: Nothing goes better together than cheese and wine. Make your spread complete with a variety of fine cheeses and a flavorful wine, such as those from Black Box. One 3-liter box is the equivalent of four bottles. For more information, visit www. blackboxwines.com. n Dynamic duets: When planning your playlist, look for holiday standards that feature only duets or duos to highlight your special theme. n Must-have mistletoe: Add a kiss of romance and fun to your event with festive mistletoe. Every couple will look forward to seeing this gorgeous greenery perched across your doorway. n Don’t forget dessert: A holiday party would not be complete without the ultimate combination of holiday sweets: cookies and milk. Set them out just as you did in childhood days and watch as guests dig in to this perfect post-dinner treat.
Mini Steak Skewers with Smoked Paprika Aioli You’ll need 4-inch skewers to make this appetizer. If you can’t find them, long toothpicks will be fine, as will larger skewers cut to size. Be sure to soak them for 15-20 minutes before cooking to avoid burning. Because this is holiday time, it’s nice to use a higher quality meat like filet mignon, but you can use whatever steak you like. Aioli: ½ cup mayonnaise 2 teaspoons lemon juice 1 teaspoon smoked paprika 1 garlic clove, minced 2 tablespoons olive oil Kosher salt and ground black pepper, to taste Skewers: ¾ pound filet mignon, cut into ¾-inch squares (should get 30-36) ½ small red pepper, cut into ¾-inch squares (should get 20-22) Kosher salt and ground black pepper, to taste Olive oil, for greasing the pan or grill To make aioli, mix mayonnaise, lemon juice, paprika, garlic and olive oil in small bowl until well blended. Season to taste with salt and pepper and set aside. This can be done up to 24 hours in advance. To make skewers, thread one piece of steak onto skewer, followed by a pepper, another piece of steak, one more pepper, and one more piece of steak. You should have three squares of beef and 2 pepper squares on each skewer. Repeat until all beef and peppers are used. Season generously with salt and pepper on all sides.

Set grill pan over high heat, or preheat grill to medium-high. Rub oil onto surface of pan or grates. Place skewers on pan or grill. If using pan, cook for about 8 minutes for medium steak, turning during cooking so all sides have grill marks. If using grill, cook for 6-8 minutes for medium, keeping lid closed as much as possible, turning throughout, until cooked to your liking. Alternatively, you can broil skewers for 6-8 minutes, turning once halfway through. Serve with aioli on the side for dipping.
