Hope kept alive for Heartland Pet Welfare Current, past board members meet to discuss shelter’s fate

SAVANNA – Rumors of Heartland Pet Welfare’s demise may be exaggerated, at least in light of some revelations and developments at a public meeting to determine interest in keeping the 15-year-old organization going.

A meeting Friday in Savanna City Council chambers was conducted by Heartland volunteers Sue Walker and Freddie Preston.

Heartland board members.

Heartland is facing a critical situation in terms of manpower and leadership, with longtime shelter Manager Sue GerlachHilgendorf retiring at the end of July, and other board members set to retire or moving on. The exhaustive amount of work and expertise required to successfully perform the manager duties has left a vacuum, with no candidate to take over these duties.

Financially, the organization is solvent and its bill are paid. The shelter building has been paid for, and the group has a contract with Purina to provide food for the cats, as well as a contract with PetSmart to showcase the cats at their Davenport and Sterling locations for adoption.

Walker said that both new board members and new volunteers were needed if the shelter was to be kept open.

She said the meeting was to gauge community interest in keeping Heartland alive.

“Why not keep it going?” she said. “It’s been such a wonderful service that has been provided.” She thanked the other members for their hard work and dedication.

“Basically, we need someone available who has a love of cats who is going to take this on as their new ‘retired’ job,” board member Jeannette Rumler said. “You can be as busy as you like, beyond the basic day to day care of the shelter. ... We need someone who’s going to pick up the gauntlet and be the shelter manager.”

Rumler said that anyone interested can contact

Christy Fritz, the shelter’s current contact person at 815-238-2972. She added that the shelter currently has 30 cats remaining, and the shelter’s goal was to get them all adopted.

There would be no euthanasia, she added.

“They will have homes.”

Rumler said two volunteers a day are needed, or 14 a week. She said that some of the daily work can be physically demanding, and said that a successful manager would need organizational skills and the ability to work with people.

Rumler said she personally would like to stay on as a volunteer rather than a board member, as she wasn’t always able to attend the scheduled meetings.

Asked about media reports that the shelter will close,

Rumler said, “It’s open, but as far as our organization, our intent is to close at the end of the year.”

If they got enough volunteers and board members, would they still have a reason to close?

Gerlach-Hilgendorf said, “We won’t know that until there’s a plan in place.”

According to the group’s by-laws the organization, if closing, would need to try to turn itself over to another established 501 3c organization.

Penny Stevens said that she had spoken to some of the board members about potentially becoming the shelter manager. She currently resides in Polo, but she and her grandson are looking at properties in anticipation of moving to the area.

“I am semi-retired . . . and I have an associates marketing management degree, I have a bachelor’s degree, I’ve had my own businesses and I’ve been around animals all my life . . . we’ve been around cats all the time.”

Stevens said her concern was that she didn’t want to come to the area and volunteer to be a manager if the group was going to close. She said her understanding was that they were going to get enough volunteers to keep it running.

Rumler said the current board planned to close “if something doesn’t come to fruition, and you don’t want the manager to be a board member.”

He takes you to the doctor, goes shopping for you, cooks and cleans for you, and makes sure you get your medication. You tell everyone that he is “a good boy” and keeps you company, too.

But your son has a drug problem. Sometimes he forgets to get your medicine, or to cook your supper.

Sometimes he needs to borrow money from you, and sometimes when he is

“This is just one example of the abuse that many elderly Americans go through each year after year. Enough is enough,” said Tammy Nehrkorn, case manager at Lifescape Community Services, Inc. in Sterling.

Nehrkorn said in the

United States, the fastest growing population are those 85 and older. One out of nine seniors reported being a victim of some type of abuse in the past year.

“Lifescape Community Services is the Illinois Department of Aging designated Adult Protective Services program for Carroll, Lee, Ogle, and Whiteside counties. We also investigate allegations of abuse for those with a disability between the ages of 18 and 59,” she said.

“Abuse takes many forms, and in most cases victims are subjected to more than one type of mistreatment.”

SAFETY STEPS PARENTS CAN TAKE

• When a school bus is traveling on a two-lane roadway and is stopped to pick up or drop off pupils, the vehicles in all lanes of traffic must stop. Vehicles should stop at least 20 feet before reaching the school bus to allow pupils to cross the roadway safely.

• When a school bus is traveling on a four-lane roadway with at least two lanes of traffic traveling in the opposite direction, only those lanes of traffic traveling in the same direction as the school bus must stop. Pupils shall not be required to cross four or more lanes of traffic to reach their residence.

• When a school bus is traveling on a one-way roadway and is stopped to pick up or drop off pupils, all lanes of traffic must stop, regardless of the number of lanes of traffic.

• CAUTION: The majority of children injured or killed in pupil transportation are not injured or killed on the school bus, but outside the bus. Most of them are struck by motorists who fail to stop for the flashing red lights and extended stop arm. This area around the bus is often referred to as the “DEATH ZONE.” • State law requires all school buses to stop at railroad crossings, whether or not there are pupils on board. The school bus driver will pull to the right-hand lane and display the hazard warning lights, stop the bus within 15 and 50 feet of the first rail of the rail grade crossing, open the driver window and service door, look and listen for an approaching train, and then proceed across the tracks without changing gears.

Other vehicles should not try to cross the tracks behind the school bus until the bus has cleared the tracks and there is room for the vehicle behind the bus on the other side. Some rail crossings have limited space between rail crossings and stop signs or signals on the other side of the tracks. If the school bus must make a stop after crossing the tracks, a vehicle following the bus may be trapped on the tracks until the bus moves or the stop signal light changes. This would have tragic results should a train approach the crossing and vehicles are unable to go forward or backward to clear the tracks.

• Supervise children to make sure they get to the stop on time, wait far away from the road and avoid rough play.

• Teach your child to ask the driver for help if he/she drops something near the bus. If a child stoops to pick something up, the driver cannot see him/her, and the child could be struck by thebus.

A book bag or backpack helps keep loose items together.

• Make sure clothing has no loose drawstrings and backpack straps are short so that they don’t get caught in the handrail or school bus door.

• Encourage safe school bus loading and unloading • If you think a bus stop is in a dangerous place, talk with your school office or transportation director about changing the location.

TEACH YOUR CHILD TO GET ON AND OFF THE SCHOOL BUS SAFELY • When loading, stay away from the danger zone and wait for the driver’s signal. Board the bus in single file.

• When unloading, look before stepping off the bus to be sure no cars are passing on the shoulder (side of the road). Move away from the bus.

• Before crossing the street, take five “giant steps” out from the front of the bus (Illinois has the school bus crossing arm) until you see the driver’s face. The driver will signal you when it is safe to cross the roadway.

• Look left-right-left when coming to the edge of the bus to make sure traffic is stopped. Continue to watch for traffic when crossing.

Supervise children at the school bus stop. Make sure they move away from the bus, out of the Danger Zone.

“The law requires a certain group of professionals to report suspected abuse, neglect, abandonment, or exploitation of elderly people. Generally, making an oral report is the extent of the reporter’s involvement,” Nehrkorn said.

Mandated reporters of elder abuse and neglect include physicians, surgeons and unlicensed medical residents; registered

and licensed practical nurses; dentists and dental hygienists; social workers, and marital and family therapists; school teachers, principals, guidance counselors; clergy; and pharmacists and physical therapists.

Abuse takes many forms Physical Abuse: Causing the infliction of physical pain or injury to an older person. This includes “domestic violence grown old.”

Sexual abuse: Touching, fondling, or any other sexual activity with an older person when the older person is unable to understand, unwilling to consent, threatened, or physically forced.

Emotional abuse: Verbal assaults, threats of abuse, harassment, or intimidation so as to compel the older person to engage in conduct from which she or he has a right to abstain or to refrain from conduct in which the older person has a right to engage.

Confinement: Restraining or isolating an older person for other than medical reasons.

Passive neglect: The failure by a caregiver to provide an older person with the necessities of life including, but not limited to, food, clothing, shelter, or medical care, because of failure to understand the older person’s needs, lack of awareness of services to help meet needs, or lack of capacity to care for the older person.

Willful deprivation: Willfully denying assistance to an older person who requires medication, medical care, shelter, food, therapeutic device, or other physical assistance, thereby exposing that person to the risk of harm.

Financial exploitation: The misuse or withholding of an older person’s resources to the disadvantage of the elderly person or for the profit or advantage of another person.

The 15th annual Carroll County Relay for Life wrap-up meeting was held July 11 at Manny’s in Savanna, who treated the Relay committee to pizza and pop.

The event was held at the Milledgeville High School track June 18. The weather couldn’t have been better for this year’s event.

We would like to give a huge shout out to Fran and Christine Gable for their support, doing the event for the past 15 years. This year, the Milledgeville High School cheerleaders were a tremendous help in setting up more than 500 luminaria bags, and assisting in games that were played during the evening.

Many thanks to Kathy Fossett for being our emcee, Samantha Schmidt for singing the national anthem, Dominique Beck for special music, and Pastor Mary Bohall for her message and singing during the luminaria service.

This year’s Relay raised just more than $50,000 by eight teams over the course of the year.

The Transformers Team would like to express its gratitude to the Lanark community and the Friends of the Lanark Public Library for their extremely generous donations of gently used clothing and toys. They made the Transformers’ clothing sale during Old Settlers Days very successful, although large quantities of clothing and toys remained unsold.

Another thank you is due Rosemary Flikkema, who offered space in her consignment mall so the Team could continue its fundraising. The new booth, Transformations, is offering lightly worn clothing from newborn through adults and for all sizes, starting at 50 cents. The funds from the OSD sales and the booth are intended for the new Information Center the Team is planning for downtown.

Finally, the Team would like to thank all the folks who attended the sale and helped to raise funds for the Transformers’ latest project.

Hospice of the Rock River Valley, a United Way agency, would like to acknowledge and thank everyone who organized, helped, participated and donated to the Schreiner Golf Outing on July 9. For the sixth year, HRRV was chosen as the recipient of the proceeds raised from this golf outing and received a check for $5,100.

Special meeting set for liquor license application Two more requests will be addressed, new trustees appointed

CHADWICK — A request to issue a one-day liquor license by Dean and Talea Nelson for a music festival in September was one of three requests that ended up being tabled at the August meeting of the village board.

Nelson requested water service to his property, a liquor license for a music festival, and for a drainage tube installation.

A special meeting to address all three requests, and to appoint two, and possibly three, new board members to replace Trustees Dave Kness, Steve Schafer and Rick Bosacki, who resigned, was scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday,

Aug. 22, in the village hall, because the board could not reach a consensus.

Board President Larry Miller said that Nelson had submitted the wrong liquor license application, and a correct form had to be submitted, adding if Nelson had been present that night, the application could have been corrected and approved.

The application was for a one-day liquor license for John Knoup, owner of the Slurp and Burp tavern in Loran, to be in effect for the second annual country music festival Sept.

10, hosted by Nelson. He said proceeds go toward the Chadwick fire training facility next to Nelson’s property, where the festival takes place.

“Miller accused me of filling out the wrong liquor application.

The liquor license application that was filled out and returned that day to the village was the same

application that was issued by Miller through the village clerk.

It was the same application that I filed for last year’s event,” Nelson said.

“Why is there more than one liquor application form at the village of Chadwick? Why was I issued the wrong application by the clerk? There is no other way to access liquor license applications from the village, for example, through printing them off of the village website.”

“The liquor license application was basically a renewal,” Trustee Karen Lief said. “It was the same person that applied last year, with no changes of ownership, for the same event.

“Why did Knoup or Dean have to show up? The bar in town, they never had to show up to renew their license, the village just renewed it.”

A second request was for the village to extend village water

service to Nelson’s property line on the north end of town.

Lief said that in January 2014, the village had agreed to provide the service. But Clerk Jan Queckboerner said that 3 months later, when the village approved the sale of the property to the Nelsons, the free water extension was excluded.

Leif said the January motion should still be applicable, but Miller said that because Nelson had not agreed to the initial terms of the sale contract, and instead accepted a contract in March that did not include the free hookup, that it was excluded.

Nelson said he has several documents that show the village had agreed and approved motions to provide the service that will be presented Aug. 22.

“I don’t understand the mindset.

The village could be selling me water,” he said.

Gerlach-Hilgendorf said on the advice of attorney, they had been advised to “go through the process, so that you’re not losing ground for something you’ve already established. You need to make sure that you work with a group, or individuals for a period of time, which this board diligently did for almost five months with one organization, and then approached other ones within the county, and that didn’t work out.“ Carol Gloor said her understanding was that when a 501 3c ended, it legally must turn over its assets to a similar organization according to Illinois law, and if it does not end, the by-laws needed to be examined about how it would continue.

“We do realize the 501 3c status for animal welfare organizations, and all three that we contacted and worked with did have that. Upon the advice of our attorney, he’s saying if you have no 501 3c that is stepping forward to take it, then it is at the board’s discretion to determine if they feel they’ve got the

right personnel to take it and continue,” GerlachHilgendorf said.

John Gloor asked about the process of board selection, and Gerlach-Hilgendorf said candidates must be an active board member and that a nominating committee would choose from there, with a full board ranging from five to 11 people.

Walker asked why they would not want to try to continue, as in the past, board members had come and gone with the shelter not closing. She said she hadn’t seen much public advertisement for the need for a manager and urged stronger communication for this.

Rumler said she felt there was ample announcements and information published in the local media, and the best way to combat any rumors was to call Heartland and find out what was really going on.

Board member Dorothy Herrmann said it is difficult managing the volunteer situation.

“You cannot require a volunteer to come and do something when it has to be done, when they can’t make it. Someone has to do it, and I know who gets stuck a lot of the time. When you want

to retire and move on, you want to retire. It’s a nice idea and we all want the shelter to stay open, but it’s very hard to recruit someone to do the things that need to be done on time,” she said.

“You get phone calls that they’re going to get a salary. They’re not going to get a salary . . . if you do something from a day to day basis, it is very stressful for the individual and I’m sorry, I love the animals, I do not personally want the shelter to go anywhere.”

One attendee suggested a tour of the shelter be conducted to those interested in volunteering to give them an idea of what it would take to keep the shelter going and to go from there.

Gerlach-Hilgendorf said the board was currently struggling with finding someone with the proper experience to provide the type of sufficient continuity that would make it viable to continue the organization.

“It takes a lot, speaking from experience,” she said.

“I think we need to be assured that the continuum of care will be there, “Rumler said. “We need to have confidence in the people willing to step forward and basically, you

have some time yet to prove yourself.”

“That’s why we say it may have to close if we can’t find those people to do that,” Gerlach-Hilgendorf said.

“What you’re looking at is really a good three to four positions that are key to work together well and keep things going,” Rumler added, saying the shelter’s current treasurer is located in the Chicago area and is stepping down as well.

“What we’re saying,” Freddie Preston said, “is that you have hope. This can be done if we get enough people together to do it.”

Walker said that there was no reason to think a future, different board could not perform as well as the current one, and GerlachHilgendorf said, “There has never been a reason to say that we couldn’t, and I apologize if that was the misperception. It wasn’t the intent to say ‘we’re closing.’ it said we may have to close. It left the door wide open, and this is a wonderful response, to see a community that steps up and says ‘we want to keep it.’”

He said Miller spoke with Trustee Talea Nelson, and said there was a swamp land issue, and the Corps of Engineers would need to be involved regarding the property and the tube.

Trustee Nelson said she called the Corps of Engineers about Miller’s assertion that the ditch work needed to be assessed by the Corps.

“I spoke with the Illinois supervisor, and asked if we needed a permit, or if they needed to become involved.

She said, ‘No, it’s a ditch. The Corps of Engineers does not get involved putting a tube in a ditch,’ and she told me to give her number to Larry and she would speak with him. I don’t know where Larry got his information, but it took me a phone call to get the right information,” Nelson said.

First lesson as classes start: Safety first

On the surface, this public service announcement is a simple one: School is back in session, so use your brain and the brake pedal while driving in school zones.

Let’s take that a little further and farther.

First? Let’s go farther, as in farther than where the school zones begin and end.

The speed limit is 20 mph in all school zones from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. This doesn’t mean that once you’re past the sign, or once the clock strikes 4 bells, you should floor it to get back up to 35, or whatever the posted limit is. Lots of kids walk home, many of them a pretty substantial distance, and their attention spans are the same outside the school zone as they are within it. Especially for the first few days of the school year, keep an extra-vigilant eye out, no matter where you are around town.

Just looking out for pedestrians isn’t enough. Here’s a quick primer on

school buses: If you’re not sure on whether you should pass, don’t.

Simple enough.

If the demand to be a courteous, concerned Christopher person isn’t enough, Heimerman perhaps this will work: Anyone who doesn’t stop behind a bus with its stop sign extended and lights activated can get hit with a $150 fine, and can lose their license for 3 months. Speeding tickets in school zones are double, too.

So plan ahead, add a little more time to get from Point A to Point B, be alert (the world needs lerts), and for Pete’s sake, holster that smartphone. By now, you should know better than to be using that thing when you’re behind the wheel, let alone in a school zone.

As for parents as terrified as I’ll be in a couple of years, safety starts with communication. If possible, arrange for your kiddo to walk to school and back home with a buddy. Conversely, reiterate the importance of stranger danger.

Take a ‘Stroll Thru Apple Creek’ The natural world through the eyes of Terry Ingram

APPLE RIVER — The “Stroll Thru Apple Creek” won’t be just another walk in the park. The stroll will be led by the Certified Naturalist and Field Trip Leader/Trainer Terrence Ingram.

See the natural world of northwestern Illinois through his eyes, which still see more than many of us.

On Saturday, Sept.

17, the Eagle Nature Foundation, founded by Ingram, will sponsor the stroll.

“Actually there will be two strolls, one at 10 a.m., about a quarter mile, to visit Apple Creek Arboretum, with its more than 125 different trees and flowering shrubs, and hundreds of different flowering plants,” Ingram said.

Then the stroll will move on to Apple Creek Prairie, with its hundreds of native flowering prairie plants.

“Strollers will enjoy over 10 varieties of both asters and goldenrods, which should be blooming at that time, as well as to look for the little Ladies Tress Orchids, which should also be blooming as well.”

Ingram said at 11:45 a.m., participants will

move up to the Apple River Presbyterian Church for a Swiss steak meal catered by the Sidetrack Café at noon, followed by both a silent and noisy auction and a 50/50 raffle.

On the second stroll at 2 p.m., participants will go back to Apple Creek to take a 1 mile stroll through Apple Creek Woods.

“This woods was an oak opening in the middle of the prairie, before white men settled the area.

Many of the old oak trees were present when Black Hawk’s people were living here. One of the huge 24 foot burr oak trees probably germinated when his ancestors were living in the area. You’ll be able to see how this ‘oak opening’ is now progressing towards a maple/basswood climax forest,” said Ingram.

“Come for a very enjoyable day learning about what is now located in these areas, and what used to be living on this property.”

“The Illinois Sheriff’s Association never solicits by phone, but does conduct a direct mail campaign throughout the state, endorsed by the individual

sheriffs across the state,” Carroll County Sheriff Jeff Doran said.

Telemarketing fraud costs billions of dollars each year. Phone solicitors who want you to “act immediately” or are offering a “too good to be true” opportunity are most likely fraudulent.

MOUNT CARROLL — Court Appointed Special Advocates volunteers are trained and supported by CASA staff to monitor the court cases of children ages birth to 18 who have been determined to be abused, neglected and/or dependent by the juvenile court system.

CASA volunteers are appointed by a judge to serve as an advocate for the purpose of speaking in the child’s best interest.

“We advocate for children who have been removed from their homes because of abuse and neglect and we are appointed by the judges as the Guardian ad Litem for the child,” said Carroll County CASA Advocate Supervisor Cheryl Smith.

As Guardian ad Litem, anyone in contact with the child including biological parents, foster parents, grandparents, attorneys, school personnel, counselors and contractors of any kind will be contacted by the appointed CASA advocate who will then speak for the child.

Smith said in her experience, persons overseeing the legal processes involving a child work as a team.

“We all have our roles,” she said. “At first the children don’t know us, but we make at least a one hour monthly visit and they get to know us after a while.”

About this series There are seven agencies applying for 20162017, 708 Board funding in Carroll County.

The Prairie Advocate will visit each of the facilities during July and August as the board reaches its appropriation decisions and announces the apportionment of funds at its Aug. 16 meeting.

She said cases involving children average about 2 years.

“There are so many different reasons children are removed,” said Smith.

“Sometimes they are returned to the biological parents and sometimes they are placed in adoption or with foster parents.

MORRISON – Morrison’s second annual Back to School Bash was another big success, with students and parents taking advantage of the fun activities and raffles in anticipation of the upcoming school year.

SHANNON — Downtown Shannon on Labor Day weekend, Sept. 3 through 5, is the site for one of Illinois’ oldest annual hometown festivals. Starting in 1919 to welcome home WWI soldiers, Shannon’s Homecoming has welcomed home its Veterans, students, families and friends for over nine decades.

The weekend celebration starts Saturday with a Car, Truck and Tractor show, followed by the Veterans Homecoming 5K Memorial Run at the Village Park.

Proceeds go towards the Shannon Veterans Memorial Wall and Homecoming activities.

At 4:30 p.m., the selection of Little Mr. Firefighter and Junior Mr. Firefighter, sponsored by Shannon Fire Department, will be at the stage. Following at 5:30 p.m., the Shannon Little Miss competition begins, and at 6 p.m., the crowning of the 58th Shannon Homecoming Queen.

A concert by The Ball Brothers starts at 6:30 p.m.

Heat and rain take their toll on fair attendance

MILLEDGEVILLE — Liz Hutchison, president of the Carroll County Fair Board, summed up the 64th annual fair in three words: “It was hot!”

Despite 6 straight years of record-setting attendance, Hutchison said the weather played havoc with gate

receipts.

“This year was the lowest attendance we’ve had since 2009. We were off $4,000 at the gate on Saturday for the demolition derby, compared to last year. We didn’t pick the right entertainment to pacify the Carroll County audience. Ticket sales were way down for the concert, too,” she said.

“It rained Friday, we couldn’t let the bands’ bus

on the track infield because more rain was heading our way. That impacted Friday’s attendance.”

It rained Thursday afternoon, too, and crews had to peel back the track so that the Ag Olympics and the variety show could take place.

“I know the people who came enjoyed themselves.

We heard it all week long: ‘Good job. Great fair.’ It

was just so hot!”

Hutchison said the new carnival rides by Shortline Amusements were a great improvement, and despite their ticket sales being down, they are returning next year.

“We’ve had 6 great years, and since I am president of the weather, I just don’t know how to act when it doesn’t cooperate!” she said.

“If the heat could have let

up just a little bit, that would have helped.”

Hutchison said the beef and dairy entries were low, because so many went to the state fair.

“It didn’t help that we were competing with the Illinois State Fair. But our garden produce entries were up, as were most categories,” she said.

“Overall, we’re happy.

We had a great tractor

parade, with 88 antique tractors. And 64 cars and trucks signed up for the demolition derby, up from last year. Tractor and truck pull entries were up, too. It’s just that the gate money was down.

“There are always positives to work on. We’ll be right back swinging next year. Now, we all support the Whiteside County Fair.”

Something for everyone at the 146th Whiteside County Fair Prairie Advocate staff

MORRISON — The 146th annual Whiteside County Fair has an amazing line up of entertainment at this year’s fair and it is sure to please all who attend! The Fair opened Tuesday, and ends after five amazing days on Saturday, Aug. 20.

Held at the fairgrounds in Morrison, today’s events include “Home Free,” who will take the main stage at 7 p.m. in front of the grandstand with their crowd-pleasing countrystyle a cappella music.

Western Horse speed events will kick off Wednesday at 8 a.m., and at 9 a.m., Dairy will be judged.

Thursday night’s grandstand entertainment starts at 7 p.m. and features the car crushing, high flying Monster Truck Throw-down, with the airborn daredevils FMX Freestyle Motocross.

Morning judging in front of the grandstand starts at 9 a.m. with the heavy horse halter classes. Also at 9 a.m. the beef cattle jr. heifer/jr. steer will be judged at the Beef Show Arena. Then at 1 p.m. the heavy horses will be back in front of the grandstand with the Horsemanship Hitch competition.

Friday evening at 6:30 p.m., the Illini Pullers Association brings tractors and trucks that will pull the sled, showing off their horsepower, in front of the grandstand, directly following the Antique Tractor Parade that starts at 5:30 p.m.

During the morning at 9 a.m., the heavy horse hitches will be seen from the grandstand. The open beef show will be judged in the Beef Show Arena also at 9 a.m. At 1 p.m., the heavy horses come back to the front of the grandstand to entertain you with the 6, 4, and unicorn hitches.

At 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, the car crunching Demolition Derby will finish off the fair’s 5-day evening attractions. Harness racing will take over the track at 1 p.m. to entertain everyone in the grandstand during the afternoon races.

The Mega Band is back again this year and Wilson Family Rides will entertain the kids and adults with their outstanding carnival and midway attractions, providing a festive and fun time for everyone. Grandpa Cratchet Stage Show will return again this year along with our bike give away each day of the fair, and the Cake/Pie Walk.

Massbach Ridge Winery’s Daffodil White awarded Double-Gold Medal in state competition

MASSBACH – Massbach Ridge Winery was the recipient of several awards from the Illinois State Wine Competition, and is preparing for its Pre-Harvest Festival to celebrate the bountiful harvest expected in the weeks to come. Twelve judges evaluated approximately 350 wines at this year’s competition, which was held in June at Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield. Then they were challenged to assess wine quality as objectively as possible, and determine the top award-winners from an impressive field of 30 wines.

Peggy Harmston, winemaker and owner of Massbach Ridge Winery, said last week the Illinois State Fair honored several Massbach Ridge wines selected during the 2016 wine competition, notably its Daffodil White, which was awarded a Double-Gold Medal, signifying high remarks from all judges. “It’s just a fancy name - there are no flowers in the wine! It’s a blend of several grapes that we grow, made into a sweet wine that’s been very well received over the years,�

Harmston said. “It’s refreshing.�

Other estate-grown wines received high honors as well, including St. Pepin, Windsong White, Traumen, Cherry RosĂŠ, Massbach Reserve and Vignoles. “We are excited to share these accolades with everyone but are even more excited about the 2016 harvest coming up,â€? said Harmston.Â

The family-owned and operated business prides itself on producing its own quality wines from eight varieties of grapes grown in their own vineyard. “We are delighted by the quality of fruit on the vine this year, and it should also be a record breaking year in regards to quantity. We’re really hoping. It’s a little to early to test the sugars and acids, but it’s looking good,� Harmston said. “We were cold and damp in May and June. We were a little nervous!

But the heat in the past five weeks has really made a difference. Grapes like the heat.�

In addition to the regular amount harvested, several acres of young St. Pepin vines will be harvested for the first time this fall. “I don’t know exactly where these grapes will be going - I can only anticipate. But over a dozen years, it’s nice to feel confident. This is

going to be an anticipated vintage,� she said.

The award winning wines and many others can be enjoyed during the upcoming Pre-Harvest Festival from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20, at the winery.

The Pre-Harvest Festival takes guests to see the abundant grapes grown on each vine from a wagon slowly cruising the vineyard, and a winery tour by Harmston. The tour showcases the equipment used for wine production, fermentation and bottling processes used at Massbach Ridge.  For $5, guests will tour the facility and sample five wines. Tasting stations will be on the wine patio to allow for a beautiful outdoor experience with views of the vineyard and the sounds of live music by Freeport’s Mike Kelly and friends. Snacks and non-alcoholic beverages will also be available for purchase during the event. “Harvest is one of our favorite times of the year and it is always a pleasure to share that experience with our guests. Enjoying the wine is wonderful, but when you can understand where it all comes from, it gives you an even greater appreciation for what we put in each bottle,� said Harmston. “Come out and enjoy some wine and look out upon the fields. It’s a beautiful way to end the summer.� The tasting room and wine patio are open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“The nice thing about CASA is that with other agencies, your case workers change sometimes. They get a promotion or they change jobs. I have one case where they are on their fourth case worker, but I am their constant. They see me every month and they have since I began with their case.�

Constancy is a plus when children are involved. Their little lives are upside down with changes and strangers appearing regularly, but then there is the CASA advocate that oversees the process for its duration.

CASA does its own fundraising and has grants that come in to keep their doors open, but like all other social service agencies, are struggling in the face of the current Illinois budget controversy. “As I understand, there is one state grant that is getting low, but it’s been OK so far,� said Smith. “We are very cautious and we are very thrifty.�

She said the agency remains a constant and is where they need to be. “Of course, it depends on the number of cases we have,�

Smith said. “In Carroll County the case load stays about the same, and that’s good. I mean, that’s good in the sense that maybe people are being kinder and gentler and we don’t have the issues with the abuse, but we do have an issue with

There are a growing number of children in Carroll County who have been exposed to drugs in their homes and as a result, are removed. “The drug issue is so interrelated,� she said. “You cannot monitor a child and take care of a child when you are under the influence, and we’ve had a number of cases that are related to that.�

There is a new applicant to the 708 Board that is seeking funding almost exclusively to bring education and prevention to the table: the Carroll County Substance Education Coalition. Smith said that educational approach is vital to success. “I think prevention is the way to go,� said Smith. “A child may not remember the exact words that were said in a drug abuse prevention presentation, but that message stays with them for their lives.

It is a, ‘Not what you say, but how you say it’ type of thing, and you have that feeling and you remember it for the rest of your life and sometimes that can be exactly what is needed. “Maybe you didn’t get the love and you were ignored and not sometimes on purpose, but it happens. And when drugs are involved, it is even more likely to happen, but sometimes the prevention or education message will carry you through.�

Willhite said they have submitted the application, and expect Lanark Police Chief and Zoning Officer Matt Magill to inspect the coop within the week.

Mayor John Huggins said that so far, six people have submitted applications and have been approved, with the Willhites still pending.

“We live right on the edge of a cornfield, and we have had no trouble with predators of any kind. In fact, if we could let the

chickens free-range, they are great at catching mice. It’s hilarious to watch!” Willhite said.

The ordinance also allows other livestock, including horses, mules, cattle, sheep and goats, as long as the resident has at least 1.5 acres of land, and the animals do not disturb the neighbors.

Willhite said her three children, Isabel, 14, Kaylee, 10, and 8-year old Lucas, have developed a wonderful sense of responsibility by tending the family flock. They make sure the chickens are fed and

watered twice a day, and clean the coop.

“They’ve developed more initiative now, especially in the heat. They even go out two or three times more to check on them. Sometimes

LANARK — Backyard chicken lovers in Lanark, including the Willhite family, rejoiced May 17 when the City Council approved an amended city code to allow a flock of up to 6 chickens in city limits.

Mary and Kevin Willhite and their three children moved to Lanark 2 and a half years ago from Las Vegas, where they also raised a backyard flock.

“We could have chickens and a rooster in Las Vegas. We never imagined that we couldn’t have them here,” Mary Willhite said.

In early spring, she joined other potential chicken owners at several City Council and committee meetings, offering their suggestions to aldermen as they wrote, edited, and finally approved a revised ordinance that amended Section 5-1-12-A of the city code.

The Willhites and other residents who want to raise chickens must submit a form provided by the zoning officer, buy a $20 permit for a coop, which is required to house the birds, and pay a $10 yearly license. The

Willhite said they have also made lots of friends because of the chickens.

“We even ‘babysat’ for our friends’ chickens while they were on vacation.

Some parents have told us that it’s a nice experience for their kids when they come over and help my kids take care of the chickens,” she said.

“They help my kids collect eggs and do chores. When their friends spend the night, they all get involved. We even have a couple of neighbor boys that come over and help with chores.

Our neighbors are great, and very accepting. We have had no problems whatsoever.”

Senior outside hitter Makenzie Fink is back for her senior year after leading the area in kills last season with 469; she also had 189 digs and 32 stuff blocks. Beyers also returns after contributing an area-high 1,203 assists, along with 75 kills, 45 aces and 26 stuff blocks.

The Cougars also find themselves getting used to a new coach. Mallory Clements is entering her first season as the Eastland coach following the retirement of Kristy Pierce, who was the only head coach the Eastland program had ever known and amassed 941 career wins, which ranks fourth on the IHSA’s all-time list.

Eastland players already got a chance to play for Clements during summer league games.

“Summer was a very good snapshot of who I am as a coach,” Clements said. “There are moments where they’re still learning me a little bit, but there’s moments where they’re used to how I run things.”

“Her coaching style is a little different than the old one, so you have to get used to that,” Fink said.

“Nothing too major.”

Clements said she is ready to shake up positions to see different looks. Fink said there is something of a restart to the Cougars program with so many of last year’s players gone and so many jobs up for grabs.

“My junior class is really filling in the gaps, and even some of the sophomores are coming up and doing a good job so far,” Clements said.

“Overall, we have plenty of people stepping up, and it’s encouraging.”

Clements has seen junior Katie Krogman getting good touches on the ball, and sophomore Gabby Snyder showing a lot of ability over the summer.

“They’re all learning about each other, and learning how they work well on the court,” Clements said.

They will be continuing to learn and to build that teamwork, which Clements said is the biggest job for Eastland between now and Aug. 23, when the Cougars open the season against Oregon.

“Summer was a little glimpse of that,” Clements said. “But really getting down and dirty and learning the ins and outs of who you’re standing next to, that’s the biggest goal until we play Oregon.”

Once the season starts, the Cougars know that even with a new coach and a slew of new players, other teams will be setting their sights on a chance to take down the state champ.

“That’s a lot of fun, I think, that everyone wants to beat us,” Fink said. “It makes us just want to play harder.”

PEARL CITY – Brighton Haverland has a new job.

Haverland spent 3 years as the tight end for the Eastland-Pearl City football team, but with last year’s starter D.J. Heeren not playing football this year, Haverland moves behind center.

“As a player, you learn to adjust,” Haverland said. “It is a lot different. I’m willing to do whatever helps the team.”

Before he takes his first official snap as the quarterback on the field, he’s already quarterbacking the team off of it.

“He’s taken the young kids under his wing and is trying to lead them in the right direction,” EPC coach Randy Asche said. “He’ll let them understand how hard you have to play and how hard you have to go in practice to be successful.”

Haverland is following in the footsteps of his dad, who was a quarterback himself.

He said he spent time during the offseason just getting the

mechanics of the position down, though he admits it is a lot harder.

He hopes having played tight end before will help him connect with his receivers.

“I know what they’re looking for, so hopefully I can get it in that position,” he said.

Asche said the decision to move Haverland was part of making sure the best athletes are on the field and in a position to make plays.

Another of those athletes the Wildcatz will count on to make plays is senior running back Keegan Schubert.

“He’s added about 20

pounds of muscle to his frame, so hopefully he’s going to be durable enough to handle the load that we need,” Asche said.

The Wildcatz have 38 players out this season, more than they had for the state title run in 2014, but of that group just eight are juniors or seniors. With a young squad, Asche will rely on contributions from a large sophomore class.

“There’s some talent there, but it’s also kind of youthful,” Asche said. “… We’re looking at them but there’s some competition, guys who really worked hard in the offseason, and we’re looking at them to get a few more reps and we’re going to ask guys to step up this year.”

The sophomore class will have a majority on the offensive line, where Asche expects four sophomores and a junior to start.

“Our line is younger than we’d like, but we’ll deal with what we’ve got, and they’re great guys,” Haverland said. “They’re really good at what they do, and I respect them a lot because without them, I wouldn’t be able to do what I do. … They are catching up and getting up to speed really fast.”
