Fourth Annual Santa’s Workshop at Whiteside County Senior Center 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 14 Breakfast with Santa will be served from 8 to 10:30 a.m. The price for breakfast is $3 for adults and $1.50 for children. The elves have been busy making gifts and children love to give gifts to their Moms, Dads, family members, and special people in their lives. Our workshop provides a wonderful low cost way for kids to do their Holiday shopping! Gifts range from 50 cents to $3. Children are able to shop with a team of special elves and even decorate their own special wrapping paper! This is a wonderful way to teach children the gift of giving! Pictures with Santa are $2, and are printed on site within minutes. Free face painting and balloon artists making animal balloons. So mark your calendars for a fun-filled morning with Santa and all the elves!

and Donna Newman. Thanks for making the commitment to helping us here at the agency. The most important items to make note of for November center on health care. First is the annual open enrollment period for Medicare Part D. Open enrollment began Oct. 15 and continues until Dec. 7. Part D is the prescription drug part of your Medicare plan, and you have the choice to stay with your current
plan or choose another one. Our outreach counselors are here to help you choose, or evaluate. your plan choices. But don’t wait until the last minute. Make an appointment now so that you are not left out. They do their best to accommodate everyone who needs help, but appointments do fill up. Additionally, I invite you to attend a special forum on Medicare, hosted by Jeff Barnes from the Northwestern Illinois Area Agency on Aging. Additionally, this year, we are hearing a lot about the new Affordable Health Care Act, which goes into effect Jan. 1. Since we are getting a lot of calls on this, I would like to remind anyone on Medicare that you are not affected directly by
this new program – your Medicare coverage will continue as before. But for anyone else wanting to learn more, we will be hosting a special presentation by the Lee County Health Department on Nov. 26 to help you make sense of it all. At the beginning of this article, I thanked you all for your support. Soon it will be time to renew your support for another year as we conduct our annual membership appeal. Lee County Council on Aging offers the majority of our programs for free, but along with the various grants and other support we get, we need your help. Membership in LCCOA is open to everyone, of any age. We’re all “aging,” aren’t we? So, please renew your mem-
bership or consider a new one when the time comes in early December. As you will see elsewhere in this Golden Echo, November is chock full of great events at the senior center. I hope you join us. In particular, let me draw your attention to our quarterly free breakfast held on the 14th, followed by our last flu clinic of the season, and a presentation from the Illinois Treasurer’s office on the I-Cash program, which helps you recover any money due to you that you may have forgotten about. Transportation! United Way funds provide local matching funds which allow us to stretch the dollars we receive from state and federal programs. Help our community by supporting the United Way campaign! We also are very thankful for all of the local organizations, businesses, groups, and individuals who provide financial and contributions-in-
kind to the senior center to assist us with our daily operations! Thank you for stepping up and helping to support our programs! We greatly appreciate your efforts to help us maintain the quality programs and services for all of the residents of Whiteside County! We will be hosting a variety of special events during November, so please check the Echo for more details. Walmart Distribution Center’s associates will be hosting a Free Community Thanksgiving Meal from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, at Whiteside County Senior Center. This meal is free and open to everyone in the community. Come out
and enjoy the meal! Flu shots are available from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, Nov. 8. Cost is $25 or your Medicare card. The Outreach staff will be hosting a Medicare information class beginning at 1 p.m. that day, so come and get a flu shot, enjoy lunch, and stay for the class. WCSC will be hosting Game and Puzzle Week at 12:30 p.m. Nov. 18-22. Come and play a different puzzle or game every day. We have prizes! The Rules of the Road class, sponsored by the State of Illinois, will be from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Nov. 20. It is a great way to review the correct rules of the road and learn about new
changes in the driving laws. Come join us for “It’s Showtime” at 12:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22. “More Than Diamonds” will be the featured film. Come join us for lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and stay for the movie! Lunch is $5, but the movie and popcorn are free! Life Line Screening will be Monday, Nov. 25, at WCSC. Preventative health screenings will be conducted to help detect your risk for serious disease. appy Halloween, everyone! I hope you have a great one as we move from October into November. As we close October, I want to look back on this past month. October began my fourth year as the director of your senior center, and I am thankful for the friends I have made and the support I have received. October also marks the beginning of our organizational year here at the Lee County Council on Aging. That means we say
goodbye to some old friends on our Board of Directors and welcome some new ones. The three board members who left us last month all have been very special to me, as they have been on the board during my tenure here. They are Emma Carnaghi, Al Esgar, and Carolyn Johns. Thank you all so much for supporting me and helping me to do my job! At the same time, a big welcome to three new board members – Roberta Lemoine, Jo Anne Mills

ovember means Thanksgiving! It is when we pause and take time from our busy schedules to sit down with family and friends to reminisce about the past year and everything we are thankful for! The staff members at the Senior Center are very thankful for all of the volunteers who help us reach out into Whiteside County to provide the programs, services, activities, and support
to those who need our assistance. We could not assist the number of people we do without their time and talents! We also are thankful to those who support our local United Way agency, which provides funding for numerous nonprofit agencies in the area. Without United Way’s support, we could not provide the services we offer through our Outreach Department, Daily Meal program, and Whiteside County Public

Open enrollment period for Medicare Part D continues The annual open enrollment period for Medicare Part D runs through Dec. 7. This is the time you can change your coverage if you are not satisfied with your Medicare Part D drug plan or your Medicare Advantage plan. This is also the time when you can enroll, if you did not do so, during your initial enrollment period. If you take several medications, check and see if your current plan is still going to be the
best plan for you in 2014. Senior Health Insurance Program counselors are available in Whiteside and Lee counties to assist Medicare recipients with comparing plans. Medicare also is available online at www.medicare.gov or by phone at 800-633-4227 to help you compare plans. ovember – what a great month! Thanksgiving reminds me of lots of people around several tables at mom’s, lots of foods, lots of dishes, and playing games after, while some took a doze on the couches. We played Quadominoes, some card games, and Songburst. The rules of the games were re-interpreted in different ways, changing them ever-so-slightly until you don’t know which rules you’re playing by at any particular time. I was always saying (rather loudly to be heard), “Why can’t we just follow the rules?” The answer was always “We are following our rules. Speaking of games, who doesn’t like trivia? United Way of Lee County is doing another trivia contest, where the play is fun, fun, fun! Nov. 15, get a team or call and get assigned to one – it is great fun. The November Lunch & Learn’s caterer is Basil Tree, speaker is John Thompson from Dixon Area Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The cost is $3 for lunch, good information, and net-

ovember already. The month of thankfulness. We have so much to be thankful for this year. First our veterans that put their lives on the line for our freedoms. God Bless America. It was a year ago in June I survived a stroke. I thank God every day for my life. I am also thankful for my job that I am so blessed with here in the kitchen. I work with some of the best and most dedicated women I know. I have made wonderful friends here and am blessed every day by them sharing their lives with me. We were given the opportunity to get a new double oven for our kitchen through many types of giving and generosity.
We have had wonderful produce shared with us this year from so many gardeners, the Sauk Valley Food Bank, the Salvation Army, Poci’s, and Selmi’s. I could go on and on. Can a home health agency refuse me as a client? Dear Marci, My doctor suggested I call a few Medicare-certified home health agencies to see if they would provide me with home health care. Can a home health agency choose not to accept me as a patient? – Corinne, Dover, Del. Dear Corinne, Unfortunately, yes. A Medicare-certified home health agency is not
required to take you on as a patient, even if your doctor has prescribed care for you and you qualify for Medicare-covered home health care. Home health care is care provided in the home to treat an illness or injury. In order for Medicare to cover home health care, you must have a need for skilled care and meet certain requirements. In some cases, a home health agency may not
have enough staff members or adequate resources to provide you with the home care that you need. Also, some agencies limit the kinds of health care services they provide and the types of medical conditions they will care for, if the agency is not equipped to treat patients with that specific disease. Keep in mind, however, that an agency may not refuse to take you based
on your specific medical condition, unless the agency also refuses to take on other patients with the same condition. While agencies are allowed to decide whether they will take you on as a patient, they may not violate discrimination laws and refuse to accept you based on your race, religion or gender. If a home health agency refuses to take you as a patient, you
will have to find another Medicare-certified home health agency that will accept you. If you have Original Medicare, the traditional Medicare program administered by the federal government, you can contact 800-MEDICARE or visit http://medicare.gov/ homehealthcompare/ to locate a Medicare-certified home health agency. If you have a Medicare Advan-

ee County Council on Aging, Robert Fulton Community Center and Transit Facility, and Whiteside County Senior Center are selection centers for the free amplified telephone program sponsored by the Illinois Telecommunications Access Corporation. You need to be certified as hard of hearing, be an Illinois resident, and have a landline telephone to qualify for this program. Please bring your phone bill with all the pages, proof of address (driver’s license, state ID, or a bill with your name and address on it) and we will help you with this program. LCCOA, RFCC and WCSC have outreach caseworkers who provide Options counseling, Medicare counseling, information and assistance to anyone who is 60 or older and persons with disabilities. The caseworkers are Certified
Information and Referral Specialists for Aging (CIRS-A) and Senior Health Insurance Program volunteer counselors. They receive training on a variety of programs and network with several agencies in order to be informed of the options available to their clients. WCSC also offers a monthly Medicare Information class. In order for our caseworkers to best assess your needs, ask what to bring when making your appointment or bring all of the following information: proof of all income for this year (Social Security benefits, pensions, interest, wages, any other income), Medicare card, Medicare Part D card, Medicaid card, value of all assets (bank accounts, CDs, any investments, investment property, business assets, cash value of life insurance, car, house, prepaid burial, burial plots, etc.), proof

of income for 2012 (even if you do not file income taxes, we will need tax documents for Social Security benefits (SSA1099), pension (1099-R), interest (1099-INT), dividends (1099-DIV), and wages (W-2, etc.), Social Security cards, and a list of current medications (including 30-day quantity and dosage). You should call ahead for an appointment. Home visits can be provided to clients who are homebound. Caseworkers also travel to several locations each month in both Lee and Whiteside counties (see below). s I write this article, the United States has less than 48 hours before we hit the debt ceiling due to the Federal Shutdown. If it didn’t cross your mind, public transportation in the United States is greatly affected by the federal shutdown. All public transportation systems are supported by the Federal Gas Tax which allocates funds to provide service, whether it is a large urbanized system like PACE in Chicago or a rural sys

As you can imagine, Lee and Whiteside counties have been proactive in creating solutions to the halt in funding to continue to provide service, which we continue to accomplish. As for now, there are no
interruptions in service for our residents. Luckily, the State of Illinois is one of the leading States that provides adequate funding for public transportation. From an economic standpoint, for every $1 invested in transportation there is a $3 return on investment. It is vital to the economy for public transportation to continue to provide service for education, employment, medical, and recreational activities. On behalf of Lee and Whiteside coun-

Northwestern Illinois Area Agency on Aging discusses Medicare at LCCOA 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19 Jeff Barnes from the Northwestern Illinois Area Agency on Aging will discuss topics such as Medicare (A,B,C, D, and supplements) will be discussed.
