The Berwyn Township Assessor’s Office assists homeowners with filing of Property Tax appeals and applications for Cook County Property Tax exemptions (homeowner, senior, disabled, and veteran) and serves as a liaison between the Cook County Assessor’s Office and our residents. The General Assistance Office offers financial assistance for qualifying individuals in accordance with the Illinois State Statutes.

The Berwyn Public Health District services include our clinic which offers immunizations, school physicals, hearing, vision and blood pressure screenings, dental education, and services for schools. KidCare/Access to Care application assistance is provided. Rx takeback program and sharps disposal services are also offered to keep these items out of landfills and water supplies. The Sanitation Department is responsible for inspections of food service businesses. We work in tandem with the City of Berwyn regarding residential complaints. Berwyn birth and death certificates are available through our Vital Records Department for a fee.

City Council meetings are held at 8PM every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month at City Hall. All residents are welcome to attend in person at 6700 26th St. 2nd Floor Council Chambers. Meetings are also livestreamed on the city’s Official YouTube Channel for the City of Berwyn.

MWRD offers rain barrels for purchase. For more information and to place your order, visit mwrd.org/rain-barrels. MWRD’s Restore the Canopy program offers free oak saplings that can be picked up at their water reclamation plants every Wednesday from 9AM-12PM (April-October). Residents must contact Berwyn Public Works before planting trees or apply via the city’s Parkway Tree Program.

The mission of the Senior Services Division is to provide quality services for Berwyn’s seniors and persons with disabilities, including low-cost transportation, lawn service, leaf blowing, snow removal and social programming. BUILDING REGULATIONS & PERMITS

BUILDING REGULATIONS

Residents must obtain a permit from the Building Department located in City Hall before proceeding with building repair or remodeling projects. All contractors and subcontractors must be licensed and bonded with the City before permits can be processed. Information for contractors is available through the Collector’s Office at (708) 788-2660.

COMPLIANCE INSPECTIONS

At the time a property is listed for sale with a Realtor or by owner, the property must be inspected for compliance with all city ordinances. If violations do exist, this ordinance allows the seller adequate time to rectify any problems prior to sale, thereby expediting the closing on the home. PERMIT REGULATIONS FOR HOME/ BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT & CONSTRUCTION

Permits are required on all improvements made to buildings and property, including but not limited to, the following work: electrical and plumbing; concrete or asphalt; HVAC or boiler; all demolition (including permit for dumpsters); dormers or additions; interior and exterior structural alterations; garages; replacement windows and glass block; porches, decks, and steps; sewer replacement; fences and gates; swimming pools and hot tubs; roofing; kitchen and bathroom remodeling; cabinet removal and replacement; and drywall. Permits are not required for inside painting, cleaning, appliance installation or replacement and floor coverings. ANIMAL & PET REGULATIONS

BACKYARD CHICKENS

Berwyn City Council lifted the local ban on chickens in March 2016 with an amendment to its Offensive Keeping of Animals ordinance. Backyard chickens are legal to keep in residents’ backyards. Learn more at berwyn-il.gov.

DOG AND CAT REGULATIONS

City ordinance limits the number of pets (combination of cats and dogs) to three (3) per building or using the same premises. All dogs and cats must be licensed with the City at a fee of $10 per year, per pet, due in June. Applications are only available in-person at City Hall.

GARBAGE & RECYCLING

ELECTRONIC & HAZARDOUS WASTE RECYCLING

Residents receiving SBC Waste Solutions Inc., services through the City of Berwyn will be able to utilize Front Door Pick-Up/Special Pick-Up. By contacting SBC Waste Solutions Inc., residents can schedule a front door pickup of home-generated special materials (ex: automotive products, garden chemicals, paint products, electronics, items containing mercury, household cleaners, and sharps, needles and lancets) at no extra cost. GARBAGE PICK-UP

Place bagged household garbage in the waste containers provided by SBC Waste Solutions Inc. for weekly pick-up. The disposal of large household appliances, building materials, or other large accumulations of materials can be arranged directly with SBC Waste Solutions Inc. at (312) 522-1115 or at sbcwastesolutions.com/berwyn

RECYCLING & YARD WASTE

Recycling bins are available from SBC Waste Solutions Inc. Contact (312) 522-1115 or sbcwastesolutions.com/berwyn/ for clean recyclable items such as aluminum cans, glass bottles and jars, tin cans, magazines and newspapers. Pick-up is the same day as garbage pick-up. Yard waste, including grass clippings and leaves, may be placed in large brown paper bags, or in your own plastic garbage cans (32 gallons or less in size) identified with a Yard Waste Only sticker (provided free at City Hall). Yard waste is picked up from April 1 through December 31. Do not rake leaves into the street as they block storm drain sewers and damage street sweepers. This violates Berwyn City Ordinance 672.04 and may result in a ticket with a fine up to $750. Recycling items must be placed loosely in recycling bin.

STREET & SIDEWALK MAINTENANCE

RESIDENTIAL FLOOD MITIGATION PROGRAM

SIDEWALK REPLACEMENT PROGRAM

If you would like to have the public sidewalk in front of your property replaced, the City of Berwyn is offering a cost share replacement program. Applications open annually in early Spring. Visit berwyn-il.gov/government/departmentaldirectory/traffic-services for more information.

STREET MAINTENANCE

Residents should be aware of the street maintenance schedule by checking their block’s signage. No parking on your side of the street will be enforced during your regular street maintenance schedule from 9AM to 4PM or as posted. SNOW REMOVAL

It is the homeowner’s responsibility to maintain all surrounding walkways to be clear of snow. Snow should not be shoveled into the street, alley, onto a fire hydrant or any other City property. For snow emergency information, call (708) 749-6514. Parking on a snow route after 6 inches of accumulated snow has fallen is strictly prohibited. The parking ban will remain in effect until the snow has been completely removed from curb to curb. Snow routes are signed accordingly. Always follow all signage on a snow route. Your vehicle will be ticketed and/or towed if it is parked on a snow route. The following streets are snow routes—(East-West): Roosevelt Rd., 16th St., Cermak Rd., 26th St., Riverside Dr., 31st St., Stanley Ave., Windsor Ave., 34th St., Ogden Ave. and Pershing Rd. (North-South): Harlem Ave., Home Ave., Oak Park Ave., East Ave. and Ridgeland Ave.

Snow removal for residential streets will follow the street maintenance schedule. It is the responsibility of you and/or any visitor of your residence to be aware of the signage posted near your home. No parking for your side of the street will be strictly enforced from 9AM to 4PM or as posted. No-fee bicycle registration is taken at the Berwyn Police Department.

GARAGE SALES

A permit is required to have a house, garage or yard sale, limit two sales/year. The first permit is free and the second costs $20. Signage rules allow you to have two signs on city parkways which may be rented for a $10 deposit/sign. Signs can be displayed between 7AM to 7PM. Sales can be held from 9AM to 5PM. Permits can be obtained at City Hall.

VEHICLE STICKERS

City ordinance requires that any resident owning and/ or operating a car, motorcycle, truck, tractor, bus or RV within the City must obtain a Berwyn vehicle sticker each year. Stickers are renewed annually on June 1 and must be displayed by July 1. New residents must purchase a Berwyn sticker at City Hall or online at berwyn-il.gov/services/ useful-forms within thirty (30) days of residency. Stickers are available online, by mail or in person. If you are seeking a sticker and your vehicle registration matches your current Berwyn address, you will need to show proof of license plate number and a valid driver’s license. If you have recently moved to Berwyn, you must show an updated vehicle registration with the new Berwyn address. Changes to your vehicle registration can be made at the Secretary of State or Currency Exchange.

The fee for passenger cars is $50, motorcycles are $35 and RVs, trucks, tractors and buses are assessed according to class. Seniors aged 65+ years receive one free passenger vehicle sticker per household, and vehicle must be registered in the senior’s name to qualify. Retired veterans receive one free sticker with proper ID or military license plate.

Residents may register to vote at the Berwyn City Clerk’s office located at 6700 W. 26th St. in City Hall during normal business hours. Online registration is available at ova. elections.il.gov. Call (708) 749-6451 for help.

FAIRWAY PARKING PERMITS

The Vacin Fairway is the parking area behind the stores on the north side of Cermak Rd.

Visitors can park for free for up to two hours. If longer parking is needed, annual permits can be purchased at the Collector’s Office in City Hall or online on the city’s website: berwyn-il.gov/services/useful-forms.

CITY SPEED LIMIT & GENERAL PARKING

The speed limit is 25 mph unless posted otherwise. All alley speed limits are 15 mph unless posted otherwise. Parking is for residents only between 3AM to 6AM on all streets unless posted otherwise. Visitors will require a parking pass. Visitor passes may be purchased in a pack of 15 one-time use passes for $5 at the Police Department and City Hall, or online at berwyn-il.gov/services/usefulforms. Residents and visitors should be sure to check the block in which they are parking for any additional signed parking restrictions.

COMMERCIAL TRUCK PARKING

Locations for commercial truck parking have been made available in the Vacin Fairway, Library Parking Lot and along the Depot parking areas. Annual and quarterly permits are available. Contact the Collector’s Office in City Hall or the Parking Department at the Police Department for permit pricing and parking locations.

DEPOT DISTRICT PARKING: PARKING FACILITY, MUNICIPAL LOT & PARKING PERMITS

The parking facility is located south of the Berwyn Metra train station in Berwyn’s Historic Depot District at 3320 S. Grove Ave. Depot permit holders can park on the first four levels with a City of Berwyn Depot Parking Permit, which can be obtained at City Hall. Daily permits can be purchased at the pay stations located on the first floor of the two stairwells for $3. The fifth (top) level is open to the public at an hourly rate of $0.25. Daily pay parking is also available at the Municipal Lot at 32nd Street and Oak Park Ave. It is open to the public at an hourly rate of $0.25.

Depot parking permits for Metra commuters, employees and residents are sold as annual and quarterly permits on a first-come, first-serve basis at City Hall or online at berwyn-il.gov/services/useful-forms. Parking areas are located in the Municipal Parking Facility and along Windsor Ave. and Stanley Ave. from Ridgeland Ave. (LaVergne Station) to Harlem Ave. (Harlem Station).

CURFEW

Persons under the age of 18 are not allowed to be in public places between 10:30PM and 6AM on Sunday through Thursday nights and between 11:30PM and 6AM on Friday and Saturday nights. Exceptions are provided for those with a parent or legal guardian and those persons going to or from their place of employment.

These improvements include updated plumbing, new liners, and refreshed landscaping to support a healthier ecosystem while preserving the park’s natural character. This summer, additional enhancements, funded through a matching OSLAD grant, will bring exciting new amenities to Proksa Park, including:

• A modern, accessible playground

• Picnic shelters for gatherings and community use

• Game tables for interactive recreation

• An improved walking path for accessibility and enjoyment

• Additional amenities designed to enhance the visitor experience

BACKGROUND

On October 31, 1963, President John F. Kennedy signed into law the Community Mental Health Act, which drastically altered the delivery of mental health services and inspired a new era of optimism in mental health care. This law led to the establishment of comprehensive community mental health centers throughout the country. It helped people with mental health conditions, who were until then effectively “warehoused” in hospitals and institutions, move back into their communities.

In Illinois, the Community Mental Health Act led to the creation of “708” boards, which are community mental health boards established by a community, municipality, or township for the purposes of planning and funding mental health, developmental disability, and substance abuse services. Through the hard work of area residents and social service agencies, the Berwyn Township 708 Community Mental Health Fund was established in 1974 by referendum.

The Berwyn Township 708 Community Mental Health Board (CMHB) promotes quality, community-based mental health, developmental disability, and substance use disorder services for the people of Berwyn. The CMHB fulfills this mission by making grants to local agencies that provide these services. Moreover, the CMHB fosters alliances and collaboration among the agencies themselves and among the agencies and various governmental departments and other community organizations that serve Berwyn.

Our Township General Assistance Program offers assistance for individuals meeting program requirements, including unemployed Berwyn adults seeking employment or those applying for disability. In addition, our General Assistance Office offers Berwyn residents personalized medical bracelets to help ensure the safety and well-being.

Berwyn Township also provides essential services to residents, including issuing handicap parking placards, offering voter registration, and hosting the mobile DMV twice a year to make vital services more accessible to the community.

As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary in 2026, communities across the country are reflecting on what truly defines the American spirit. In Berwyn, that spirit shines not only in the night sky each Independence Day, but in the everyday generosity of a local business that has become a cornerstone of community life:

the World’s Largest Laundromat.

On July 3, 2026, families will once again gather at J. Sterling Morton High School football field located at 2401 S. Harlem Ave., Berwyn, IL 60402 for Berwyn’s annual Independence Day fireworks celebration. Starting at dusk, folks gather for this cherished

tradition neighbors spreading out blankets, elders watching from their lawns, children chasing fireflies, and the shared anticipation of fireworks lighting up the summer sky. Behind that celebration stands the support of local partners, including the World’s Largest Laundromat, whose commitment to Berwyn extends far beyond its walls.

Owned by Tom Benson, the laundromat has grown to become much more than a place to wash clothes. Since purchasing the business in 1999, Benson has reimagined what a neighborhood laundromat can be, transforming it into a welcoming, community-centered space where people feel seen, supported, and valued.

“At its core, this business has always been about people,” Benson says. “If you listen closely, every community will tell you what it needs. Our job is to respond with care.”

That philosophy is evident in both the small gestures and the larger initiatives that define the laundromat’s presence in Berwyn. From complimentary coffee and donuts in the morning to free pizza nights that bring neighbors together midweek, the space has become a gathering point as much as a service.

This kind of investment in people reflects the deeper meaning of Independence Day, not just a celebration of history, but a

recognition of shared responsibility and collective care. By sponsoring Berwyn’s fireworks display, the World’s Largest Laundromat helps create a moment where the entire community can come together, free of barriers, to celebrate. More than 10,000 spectators will view the show from the stadium and surrounding areas.

about creating joy,” Benson adds. “It’s our gift to the community. This celebration is one of those rare moments where the whole community can stand side by side and feel like they are part of something bigger than themselves.”

Youth Crossroads (YC) supports youth and their families, guiding them through life’s challenges challenges, and inspiring them to discover new opportunities for personal development, healthy relationships, and positive community involvement. Youth Crossroads envisions a future when equitable outcomes are not just a goal, but a reality. They seek to remove barriers that prevent youth from reaching their fullest potential and envision a society where all youth thrive. As part of the Berwyn community since 1974, YC has served tens of thousands of at-risk youths. As a leader in behavioral health and youth development services, they provide young people with a continuum of services they need to achieve success at home, in school, and in life. This includes in-school counseling, community counseling, early childhood intervention, crisis intervention, violence prevention, youth leadership training, workforce development, after-school enrichment, and community service. All their programs and services are offered free of charge in English and Spanish.

DISTRICT HISTORY

The story of Berwyn South School District 100 dates back to October 5, 1888, when the first public school was established in Berwyn. The original LaVergne School, located at 34th Street and Gunderson Avenue, was a modest two-room stone building. Each room was equipped with a fireplace and served approximately 80 to 100 students annually.

Since that time, the district has grown significantly. Today, District 100 includes eight schools and serves 2,952 students. At its peak enrollment nearly a decade ago, the district served more than 4,000 students, reflecting both the growth and evolution of the Berwyn community.

NEW EDUCATION CENTER

District 100 looks forward to the opening of our new District Education Center building this Fall. The building will create a welcoming space for new families joining our district, ensuring that the first experience they have with our schools is one of warmth, support, and belonging. It will house our family liaison and preschool screening services, helping our youngest learners begin their educational journeys with care and intention, and will be the central hub for professional development for all staff in the District.

This project does not end at the walls of the building. This space extends outward— to outdoor learning environments where students can explore and grow, and a community garden, where people gather together, enjoy nature, and learn about the world around us. This outdoor space will transform this area and allow for flexible spaces for events, celebrations, and connections among residents of all ages.

This year, we proudly introduced the Komensky Elementary School Student-Led Podcast Little Lions, Big Voices! We are excited to share this authentic learning experience designed to amplify student voice, strengthen communication skills, and deepen connections across our school community and beyond.

• The District 100 band program has grown so much over the past several years that we expanded to have a band at each middle school. This year, Heritage scored high enough in competition to qualify to perform at the state level!

• All schools hosted an Earth Day Celebration and Outdoor Projects so spruce up their schools for Spring.

• Music In Our Schools featured 400+ students from school choirs and Komensky’s mariachi band in partnership with Morton West High School.

• Middle school students displayed their roller coaster projects at the District Science Showcase.

• Preschool families joined their children throughout the school year at Family Connection Days where they engage in learning and fun activities together!

Together, we have remained focused on creating college-, career-, and life-ready experiences for our Mustangs—ensuring every student is guided and supported throughout their high school journey and in reaching their post-secondary goals. The successes we celebrate today are a direct result of our shared commitment, beginning from the very first day of freshman year. Morton West implemented a GradeLevel Student Services Alignment this year. Students are connected with their support teams from their first day as freshmen through graduation... and beyond! Counseling team provide grade-specific and developmental targets to help students and families explore academic, college and career options over all four years of the Morton West journey.

LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS

Morton West welcomes freshman families to The Next Four Years where Mustangs and their family participate in an informative and interaction session highlighting shared commitments and identifying what to expect during the first year of high school, meet their support teams and set the stage for the next four years of collaboration and partnership.

Morton West is eternally grateful to our partners for our local scholarships, allowing us to offer over a total of $53,500 across 28 scholarships this year!

SCHOOL-FAMILY-COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

Principal Cavanaugh and Parent Liaison Araceli Torres hosted monthly parent engagement sessions for caregivers at Parents and Community in Schools and Eat and Engage sharing the knowledge of community partners such as Berwyn Health Department, Solutions for Care, RTA, Angela Rose, and Rincon, among others.

Morton West students and caregivers were empowered with lessons by RISE with Angela Rose about healthy relationships, advocacy, and support through classroom sessions and Parents and Community in School events.

Student Services provided ongoing student wellness education in collaboration with Elyssa’s Mission, NAMI, and Erika’s Lighthouse. In April, Hope Wins presented schoolwide assemblies to share a powerful message on raising awareness about

the risks of substance use and available addiction support resources.

2026 marked the 3rd annual Basketball for Cause, a fundraiser for the Morton West Student Support Fund. Morton Teachers vs. Berwyn Police Department faced each other on the court, coached by Morton athletes and referees were students enrolled in the Morton Officiating class. The fundraiser was proudly sponsored by Berwyn Police IMPA, Morton SAALT Club, and Morton Athletics.

The Morton West Holiday Meal Program provided over 100 holiday meals to Morton West families thanks to donations by staff, the Student Support Fund and food partnerships with Amazon Fresh and Aldi. Counselors, social workers, psychologists, SROs, and administrators collaborated to purchase, prepare, and deliver meals directly to families’ homes.

• Morton West hosted the inaugural Underwater Robotics Competition featuring 10 robotics teams from schools within the West Suburban Conference as part of Student Activities and Leadership network.

• Morton West Student Activities hosted both a Fall and Spring Lock-In with 280+ attendees at each event. Students participated in team sports, movie, game room, swimming, dancing and more between 10pm-6am.

• 3rd annual Senior Sunrise was held in May 2026

COLLEGE & CAREER

• Morton West Future Fest, October 2025: A college and career fair featuring nearly 50 vendors, including representatives from colleges and universities, trade programs, and local organizations. Students had the opportunity to explore a wide range of postsecondary options and career paths while connecting with local professionals. The event was designed to support college and career exploration while helping students build meaningful connections and partnerships for their future. We can’t wait to make next year’s even bigger and better!

• Morton West Career Month, March 2026: Morton West’s College & Career Center hosted Career Month, an entire month dedicated to helping students across all grade levels explore their future paths. They welcomed professionals from a wide range of fields including military, trades, healthcare, public service, and technology, and organized multiple field trips and workshops to support students in identifying the right postsecondary pathway and preparing for life after high school.

STUDENT SUCCESS

Morton College students continue to demonstrate excellence across disciplines. This year, ten art students exhibited their work at the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference Juried Art Competition, earning multiple Awards of Merit and a Best in Show distinction. Sixteen additional students showcased their work at Governors State University, with several receiving top honors, while others were recognized at Northeastern Illinois University. FROM CLASSROOM TO CAREER

In the Automotive Technology program, students are preparing for careers before they even graduate. At this year’s Automotive Career Day, students connected directly with employers from dealerships, independent shops, and fleet services, with many beginning the interviewing process on-site. Scholarships were also awarded to support tuition and tools. The program, accredited by the ASE Education Foundation, offers flexible course options and handson training with modern and emerging technologies, including hybrid and electric vehicles. Students also have the opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications from Ford, Toyota, Hyundai, and Snap-On Tools, positioning them for immediate entry into the workforce.

SHOWING UP FOR OUR COMMUNITY

Morton College’s sense of community extends beyond academics. This year, students, faculty, and staff raised over $15,000 for Special Olympics Illinois during the inaugural Polar Plunge, surpassing their goal. For many, this cause is personal. It reflects a campus built on inclusion, connection, and showing up for one another.

BTUDOR REVIVALS FRENCH NORMANDY THE CITY OF HOMES

erwyn is known as the City of Homes because it is so far from your average cookie-cutter suburb. When you think Berwyn, bungalows most likely come to mind first. Yes, Berwyn’s rich history is reflected in one of the most significant collections of Chicago-style bungalows in the nation today. But it may surprise you to learn just how much variety there is in Berwyn’s charming and affordable housing stock.

Tudor Revival style homes are some of the more recent properties to be built in Berwyn, starting to appear in the 1940s. Tudor Revivals tend to sit on smaller lots than their bungalow neighbors, as they were built to be a more affordable option. These one-and-a-half-story houses boast a very steep-pitched roof with intersecting gables. Some feature small front porches, but many have no porch at all. Berwyn’s Tudors tend to feature intricate stonework that frames different parts of the home.

After World War I, the French Normandy architecture style became popular among the growing middle class in America. Inspired by French chateaus, these houses were versions built on a smaller and more affordable scale. French Normandy houses often feature arched doorways, steep roof pitches, high ridge lines, dormers, and half-timbering. Most distinctively, they feature a round stone tower topped by a conical roof, which typically serves as either the primary entrance or a dramatic design feature.

AMERICAN FOURSQUARES

Some of the first homes to be built in Berwyn, American Foursquares are unique in their effective use of space. Popular around the 1910s, they were chosen because of their simplicity compared to their fancier Victorian counterparts. Common features of an American Foursquare are two-and-a-half stories, large overhanging eaves, and a large front porch with wide steps. They tended to be built on larger lots, providing residents with plenty of space to design and plant beautifully landscaped front lawns.

WORKMAN’S COTTAGES

The Workman’s Cottage home can be defined by its namesake—a cottage. Most Workman’s Cottages are typically one-and-a-half stories with a pointed roof. Some are frame houses and others were built with brick. Workman’s Cottages are considered the predecessor to Chicago-style bungalows. The outsides of the cottage-style homes may appear very different, but the interiors can be very similar with almost the same floor plan.

VICTORIANS

You can’t miss one of Berwyn’s Queen Anne Victorians. Featuring signature-style details like beautiful wrap-around porches, turrets, towers, and ornamental details, Queen Annes give a nod to the extravagance of a by gone era. Despite their ornateness, many of the materials required to build a Victorian home were being mass-produced at the time. They were able to be shipped easily, all thanks to the widespread train routes that included stops in Berwyn.

BUNGALOWS

Berwyn’s bungalows were all generally built around the same time in the 1920s to 1930s. Although many bungalows in a block were sometimes built by the same workers, each house in Berwyn is unique, with subtle differences from its neighbors by design or made by the owners over the years. The roofline, style of shingles, limestone accents, and even the style of decorative face brick combine in endless ways from house to house. The bungalows in Berwyn are also full of ornamental details such as tiled roofs, stained-glass windows, checkerboard brick patterns, and intricate limestone insets. In 2015, the Central Berwyn Bungalow Historic District made it onto the U.S. government's National Register of Historic Places for the seventh time. The Central Berwyn Bungalow Historic District is roughly bounded by Cermak Road, Home Avenue, Ridgeland & Cuyler Avenues, and 26th Street.

NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES

Two unique Berwyn homes are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Robert Silhan House and Arthur Dunham House are noted as significant for the way in which they perfectly exemplify the styles in which they were built.

In 2007, this home made it onto the National Register of Historic Places for its well-preserved style and its many features from the Streamline Moderne style that make it notable on a local and national level.

ARTHUR J. DUNHAM HOUSE

In 1982, this home was added to the National Register of Historic Places because of its clear representation of the Prairie School style.

In a place like Berwyn, being a good neighbor is more than a simple gestureit's a reflection of longstanding values that continue to shape a strong, connected community today," says Melissa McDow.

As the co-owner of FocalPoint Coaching & Training alongside her husband, Joe DeRamos, McDow is one of many local residents who contribute their time to something bigger than themselves. In addition to running her business, she serves as a board member for the Berwyn Development Corporation (BDC), volunteering her time to support fellow small business owners.

Whether giving their time, energy, talent, or compassion, what connects these individuals is a willingness to look at their surroundings and ask, "What can i do for someone else?"

McDow adds, "Being part of Berwyn means contributing to a culture where people matter, relationships are valued, and community is a shared responsibility. It's about showing up, staying engaged, and taking small actions that lead to meaningful change.

That same spirit can be seen throughout the city in people like Jamie Revell, owner of W3 Body, whose commitment to community extends far beyond her business. As the former board president of the BDC, she has consistently supported initiatives that bring people together. Whether attending North Berwyn Park District’s Corrida del Mariachi 5K alongside members of her gym or organizing a Zumba fundraiser after learning one of her employees was battling cancer, Jamie exemplifies what it means to care for others through action.

Beyond his role as Fire Marshal, Mario Manfredini stays active in the community through service. He currently sits on the Berwyn Park District board and Berwyn Development Corporation board as President. To further support causes that strengthen the community, Mario annually donates his time and talents cooking for local nonprofit fundraisers, helping support causes that strengthen the community he proudly serves and lives in.

As Coach Joe DeRamos says, “It’s all part of our shared commitment to helping improve the lives of those around us and be the ‘pebble in a pond,’” a choice available to all.

Getting involved in Berwyn can start small: attend a neighborhood event, volunteer for a local fundraiser, support a park district program, or join a community board. Organizations throughout Berwyn are always looking for volunteers, fresh ideas, and people willing to lend a hand!

Strong communities are not built by a few extraordinary people. They are built by ordinary people deciding to care for one another, one small action at a time.

To be a good neighbor, one must first exemplify what it means to show up for others. Throughout his time in office, Mayor Robert Lovero has often spoken on the importance of supporting not only the residents of Berwyn, but surrounding communities as well. That commitment to partnership and service was recognized in April 2026, when the Village of Broadview honored the City of Berwyn for its assistance during Operation Midway Blitz in September 2025.

In April 2026, personnel from the Village of Broadview attended a Berwyn City Council meeting to formally recognize the city for its assistance in September. During the crisis, the City of Berwyn provided support through the Berwyn Police and Fire Departments, who assisted with the unexpected influx of public safety needs and traffic control efforts in Broadview.

During the presentation, Mayor Katrina Thompson spoke about the importance of municipal collaboration and the impact Berwyn’s immediate response had on her community, stating: “During one of the most challenging moments our community faced, the City of Berwyn showed up without hesitation. Their partnership, professionalism, and willingness to stand beside Broadview demonstrated what regional leadership and community truly look like. We are grateful for Mayor Lovero and the entire City of Berwyn for answering the call when our residents needed support the most.”

The award given to Mayor Lovero read, “True leadership is not measured by position, but by partnership — how we come together, stand together, and deliver for the people we serve.”

In response to Mayor Thompson’s words, Mayor Lovero stated, “In times when fear and misunderstanding test our values, courage is found in choosing humanity, every time. No community should be defined by assumptions, and our neighboring communities of Broadview and Berwyn are built by an overwhelming majority of people seeking safety, opportunity, dignity, and a better life for their families.

I am inspired by the courage of our residents and fellow colleagues like Mayor Katrina Thompson, and proud to stand side by side through this.”

The recognition underscored a longstanding spirit of cooperation and shared service, highlighting how both communities continue to demonstrate the value of standing together — not only in moments of crisis, but in building a stronger future for all residents.

Single Family Rehab No Interest Loan Program

The purpose of this program is to assist low to moderate income homeowners with minor repairs and the correction of eligible city code violations.

The City of Berwyn’s Community Development Department, through an annual grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), funds programs for residents of singlefamily homes living within limits, to meet safe community standards. The Single Family Rehabilitation - No Interest Loan Program - offers eligible residents deferred, no interest loans to complete necessary improvements to their homes. Cosmetic home improvements are not eligible.

FINISH LINE GRANT: SUPPORTING COMMERCIAL PROPERTY REVITALIZATION

Property improvements help businesses operate confidently, attract foot traffic, and energize Berwyn’s commercial corridors. Managed by the BDC, the Finish Line Grant serves as partial reimbursement for eligible interior and exterior project expenses, including HVAC or utility upgrades, façade improvements, awnings, and similar buildout costs. Commercial properties within the City’s Roosevelt Road, Harlem/Cermak, and Depot TIF districts are eligible to receive up to $50,000.00 in assistance, and applications are accepted on a rolling basis through December 2026 or until funds have been exhausted.

modern, open-concept workspace hub for his team of realtors. Josue shared that the grant made it possible to invest more deeply in the site and frequently encourages others to pursue local funding; he is grateful for the partnership that helped fuel their next chapter in Berwyn.

LOOKING BACK AT THE BEGINNING

About a month before the inaugural grand opening of the Berwyn Shops, the site looked very different. Instead of customers, it was filled with BDC staff, board members, partners, and community volunteers all working together to prepare the space. Armed with paintbrushes and rollers, they transformed 12 unassuming sheds into what would soon become a hub for local entrepreneurs.

The atmosphere was upbeat and purposeful. Volunteers introduced themselves, shared their connections to Berwyn, and worked side by side throughout the day. Many tested colors on their bright yellow volunteer shirts, leaving behind streaks of purple, blue, and green as they solidified the final looks for each shop.

For many, it was their first real introduction to the project. Fabiola Avitia, Vice President of the BDC Board, recalls her involvement from the beginning: “I first learned about the project during a meeting when the initial group of applicants was preparing to pitch their businesses. At the time, I didn’t fully understand the concept, but I signed up to help paint the shops on April 16, 2022. It turned out to be a wonderful day, with so many people coming together and collaborating to create a vibrant, welcoming atmosphere.”

Later, volunteers gathered for lunch at Culver’s, continuing conversations and sharing excitement about what was to come. That sense of ownership has endured. To this day, community members return to the Berwyn Shops and proudly point to a storefront, saying, “I painted that purple shop!”

BUILDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR LOCAL ENTREPRENEURS

The Berwyn Shops emerged from a series of conversations with small business owners about expanding opportunities for growth in Berwyn. That dialogue evolved into a shared effort to create a space where entrepreneurs could test business concepts, access resources, and connect with the community in a flexible, low-risk environment. What started as a planning initiative in 2022 ultimately became a new model for small business incubation in the city.

Located at 6931 Roosevelt Road, the Berwyn Shops hosts 12 vendors each season from May through December. The program provides accessible retail space, structured educational support, increased visibility, and networking opportunities designed to help participants strengthen and grow their businesses. The vendors include artisans,

pop-up retailers, and local creators, each using the space to refine products, test pricing, and better understand customer demand in a retail environment.

Beyond the physical storefronts, the program emphasizes direct engagement with the public. Vendors are encouraged to interact with customers, collect feedback, and organize events that help them build visibility and expand their customer base. This hands on approach has supported long term growth for many participants. To date, 43 small business owners have graduated from the Berwyn Shops program, with several going on to open permanent brick and mortar locations in Berwyn and other communities.

As Fabiola Avitia noted, “The Berwyn Shops has continued to be an innovative reimagining of space, offering small

business owners the opportunity to experience a brick-and-mortar setting before committing to a traditional longterm lease. From painting those ‘little houses’ in 2022 to watching different groups bring the space to life, it has been an incredible experience to be a part of. The Berwyn Shops provides a meaningful opportunity for businesses to grow and for the community to engage in and support local entrepreneurship.”

LOOKING FORWARD TO SEASON 5

On May 1, community members, partners, and returning shoppers gathered to celebrate the grand reopening of the Berwyn Shops for its fifth season. This milestone season marks five years of supporting local entrepreneurship and creating a space where small businesses can grow and connect with the community. The event welcomed the 12 vendors selected for the 2026 season and featured remarks from community partners who have helped shape the program’s continued success.

Since its launch, the Berwyn Shops at 6931 Roosevelt Road has grown into a well-established destination for both residents and visitors. Over the past five years, the program has continued to evolve, with improvements to both the physical site and overall experience. The Berwyn Shops space has been enhanced to include upgraded heating and cooling in each shop, on-site bathroom facilities, improved door hardware, and a dedicated storage area to support events and operations.

The program’s educational component has also expanded significantly. In 2026, vendors benefit from new

partnerships with 37 Oaks and Breedlove Entrepreneurship Center, providing additional business training opportunities. Participants also receive financial education support from BMO and retail design guidance from Jacobson Design Co., helping them strengthen both their business management and presentation.

For the first time, the Berwyn Shops has invited two alumni vendors — Werk Mija and Rites and Tea Rituals — to return to the program. Recognizing the value our graduated entrepreneurs bring, the Shops is piloting a new approach to mentorship by welcoming back alumni committed to continued growth while serving as leaders and guides for incoming cohorts. Their return reflects the program’s continued evolution and highlights the importance of supporting businesses beyond their initial season.

The Berwyn Shops continues to offer a dynamic space where entrepreneurs can test the market and where the community can shop, connect, and support local talent.

As Berwyn Shops celebrates its five-year anniversary, its impact is marked by the success of its entrepreneurs. In 2025, Katrina Thacker (Class of 2024) opened her own storefront, Nzuri Kulture on Roosevelt Road, while Laura Santoyo (Class of 2022) celebrated two years in her storefront, Date Nite Beaute, in the Depot District. Over the past 5 years, alumni have expanded into new markets, secured partnerships and grants, hosted community events, and gained regional and national media recognition. Through participation in major business cohorts, pitch competitions, and brand collaborations, the Berwyn Shops continues to serve as a launchpad for small businesses putting down lasting roots.

The Berwyn Shops was a life changing experience for me. It gave me an opportunity to really test out my products in the market and refine my ideas for the future of my business. It also helped me create priceless connections with local news and media.”

BERWYN INTERNSHIP FOR SMALL BUSINESSES

Over a two-year partnership, the Berwyn Development Corporation (BDC) collaborated with the Brennan School of Business at Dominican University to support and transform more than 40 local businesses. Concluding in Fall 2025, the program paired students with participating businesses as social media marketing interns. Students strengthened digital presence through strategic website and social media enhancements, leaving businesses with sustainable tools for lasting impact while gaining hands-on professional experience.

The Women in Business group is a growing network dedicated to supporting, connecting, and celebrating the women shaping Berwyn’s business community. What started as a space for local professionals to gather has grown into a supportive community where ideas, experiences, and resources are shared openly. Through monthly meetings, workshops, and real conversations, members build meaningful relationships and gain tools to navigate both entrepreneurship and the workplace.

Today, the group continues to cultivate confidence, collaboration, and leadership among women across industries. Looking ahead, Women in Business aims to expand its reach, create more opportunities, and continue uplifting the voices driving Berwyn forward. WHY “BERWYN”?

How did Berwyn become Berwyn? It is a story which takes us back to the late 19th century. Charles Piper and Wilber Andrews, attorneys and business partners from Chicago, purchased land from Marshall Field, founder of the Chicago department store Marshall Field & Co. The land was approximately bound by 31st Street, Wesley Avenue, Ogden Avenue, and Kenilworth Avenue, with Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad Co. (“CB&Q”) tracks cutting diagonally through the land. Piper & Andrews began promoting and selling the land and approached the CB&Q about building a station in order to serve their clients, many of whom were coming from Chicago. However, since trains were already making stops at Harlem Avenue and at LaVergne, the CB&Q declined their proposal. Piper & Andrews were undeterred and built their own station on Windsor Avenue between Grove Avenue and Oak Park Avenue, which continues serving residents today. A name was needed for the station, so Piper & Andrews consulted P.S. Eustis, the manager of passenger traffic for the CB&Q. Eustis gave them a Pennsylvania Railroad Co. timetable and Piper & Andrews found the name Berwyn, a Philadelphia suburb, which in turn was named after a mountain range in Wales. Berwyn became the name of the station and the name of the station became the name of the town.

THE CITY OF HOMES

Piper & Andrews, as well as other determined developers, turned Berwyn from farmland to metropolis in less than 50 years. Further, they have left the legacy of a town with a plethora of historic homes, not only bungalows but other beautiful homes in styles ranging from Modernist to Victorian, as well as a collection of impressive multi-family properties. Berwyn’s legacy of compact development has made the town the most densely populated municipality in Illinois, as well as an affordable place to buy a house mere miles from one of the world’s great cities.

BUILD, BUILD, BUILD

A number of people in addition to Piper & Andrews developed land in what is now Berwyn. John Kelly built homes between 12th Street and 16th Street, an area just south of the already established town of Oak Park. Thomas Baldwin attempted to develop the land Piper & Andrews later would attempt to develop and called it LaVergne. Baldwin sought to develop an affluent, exclusive community with big homes and broad lawns. The City of Berwyn incorporated on June 6, 1908 and development continued, although a big portion of Berwyn, ranging roughly from 16th Street to 31st Street, largely remained farmland. Developers began to build homes in this area during the 1920’s. A number of the developers were Chicago residents and Czech immigrants who sought to build homes and entice Czechs from the Chicago neighborhoods of Lawndale and Pilsen to move west along Cermak Road and into the Chicago suburbs. Berwyn’s population grew from 14,000 in the 1920 census to 47,000 in the 1930 census, an increase of 236%.

FROM ONE GENERATION TO THE NEXT: THE BUONAVOLANTO FAMILY

ROOSEVELT ROAD

Founded in Berwyn in 1981, Buona began with a leap of faith from founders Joe and Peggy Buonavolanto, who took out a second mortgage on their home just a halfmile away to open a small stand serving their family’s Italian beef recipe. What started as a modest operation has since grown into one of Chicagoland’s most recognizable restaurant brands. Today, three generations of the Buonavolanto family remain involved in the company’s operations, including the couple’s five sons, helping preserve

the family-centered values that built the business.

Still 100% family-owned, Buona has continued to expand while keeping their businesses in Berwyn. In addition to growing its restaurant operations, the company has expanded its catering services through Beyond Catering and has found success in its acquisition of The Original Rainbow Cone — which is celebrating 100 years — bringing even more local favorites to customers across the region. For Italian beef lovers throughout

THE TURANO FAMILY

Founded in 1962, the family-owned Turano Baking Company has grown as a small neighborhood bakery into a business that ships it’s breads and rolls nationwide from one of their five facilities across the country.

Turano takes pride in being the premier Baker for the United States Restaurant industry. Similarly to the Buonavolanto family, their business started on Roosevelt Road and that is still where they are headquartered. The multigenerational operation has become a proud part of Berwyn, embraced by residents who know the familiar aroma of fresh bread drifting through the area and truly stands as a testament to decades of dedication, hard work, and community support.

Chicagoland, Buona remains a hometown success story and a proud Berwyn born institution. You can still dine-in at their original location at 6745 Roosevelt Road, Berwyn IL 60402.

Turano breads has also become an integral ingredient behind many local favorites, supplying beloved restaurants such as Mr. Submarine, Portillo’s, Buona and many more! Next time you’re driving down Roosevelt, stop by Mamma Susi’s Bakeshop, named in honor of Assunta Turano, the original matriarch of the Turano family, affectionately known by customers as “Mamma Susi.” They offer fresh pastries, baked goods, with hot coffee daily.

Even though Roosevelt Road has been a place for great success in the food industry, to this day, this street retains the reputation as the “Entertainment Hub in Berwyn.” And who takes the #1 spot to visit in Berwyn? According to TripAdvisor, the people have spoken and it’s FITZGERALDS & BABYGOLD.

THE DUNCAN & KING FAMILY

What began long ago as a Bohemian hunting lodge eventually transformed into the beloved music venue now known as FitzGerald’s Nightclub, officially established in 1980. Since then, the venue has earned recognition as the state's first music venue or nightclub to join the National Register of Historic Places. With a reputation for its Americana, blues, roots rock, and live music, Fitzgerald's cultural impact is evident as generations of music lovers continue to flow through its doors. When former Thalia Hall general manager Will Duncan purchased FitzGerald’s from the FitzGerald family in March

2020, many longtime patrons worried about the future of a neighborhood institution so deeply tied to Berwyn’s identity. However, since acquiring the business, Duncan and King have earned the respect of longtime supporters by introducing new initiatives, diversifying musical acts, and continuing to honor the venue’s rich history.

Today, FitzGerald’s continues to celebrate both music and community. A recently completed mural by Chicago artist Benjamin Marasco pays tribute to the venue’s history and enduring creative spirit. As owners Will Duncan and Jessica King raise their children, Stanley-Jack and Charlie, in the same hardworking and music-filled environment that founder Bill FitzGerald fostered decades earlier, FitzGerald’s remains a powerful reminder that Berwyn’s most treasured places can continue to evolve while staying true to their roots.

BERWYN BUSINESS DISTRICT SPOTLIGHT:

CERMAK ROAD

BUILT ON HUSTLE, SHAPED BY CHANGE

PAST

Cermak Road in Berwyn has always been more than just a busy street.

It has been a symbol of growth, hustle, and opportunity. Back in Berwyn’s early days, and even studying this later when I became a realtor, the city experienced a major bungalow boom from the early 1900s through the post war years. Families moved west from Chicago looking for affordable homes, stability, and a better future.

Berwyn quickly became one of the largest bungalow communities in the country, filled with hardworking families chasing homeownership and long-term security. With that kind of growth came business, and Cermak Road naturally evolved into a financial hotspot. Banks, insurance offices, mortgage companies, and real estate shops lined the corridor, helping fuel the dream of ownership for generations.

On the corner of Cermak Road and Ridgeland Avenue, there once was the Parthenon Theater, a grand movie palace built in 1924, with a capacity of 1,664 seats. In 1930, it was rebranded as the Berwyn Theater until a 1990 fire ultimately led to its demolition. A Bank of America now stands on the site, and the bank’s facade includes a mosaic of the original theater.

PRESENT

By the time I was growing up in nearby Cicero and later Stickney, I knew Berwyn well and spent plenty of time there. You could still feel Berwyn’s financial legacy all over Cermak Road. It was where serious business got done. Real estate offices seemed like they were on every corner, and to me, that represented ambition. It showed Berwyn was a place where people built futures, bought homes, and created wealth long before “generational wealth” became a popular phrase.

When I entered the real estate world at 21 and was hired by Casa America on Cermak Road, I experienced that

energy firsthand. The corridor had a real pulse. Families, especially Hispanic families, came in looking to buy their first homes, make investments, and create something better for themselves. The work was about more than just filling out paperwork. It was about helping people chase the American Dream while often teaching financial concepts their families had never been exposed to. The community was hungry, motivated, and full of pride.

Over time, things began to shift. Technology changed the game. Larger institutions altered how business was done, and many traditional financial

From its early days supporting a booming housing market to its present-day mix of businesses and cultures, Cermak has continuously adapted alongside the community it serves. To understand Berwyn, you have to understand the importance of Cermak Road- not just where it is today, but where it has been, and where it’s headed next.

Looking ahead, I believe Cermak Road still has massive potential. Berwyn has stability, strong neighborhoods, and a community built on hard work. That foundation does not disappear. Could Cermak become an even stronger financial hub? Absolutely. But its future may be even bigger, blending finance, entrepreneurship, culture, and

community into something more modern.

At the end of the day, Cermak Road has changed, but Berwyn’s core has not. Hardworking people, homeownership, business growth, and community pride still define it. The storefronts may evolve, but the hustle remains the same. And honestly, in Berwyn, that hustle has always been undefeated.

Today, Cermak Road looks different, but it still holds tremendous value within the community. Instead of being primarily finance centered, it now reflects Berwyn’s broader diversity. Restaurants, local shops, healthcare offices, professional services, and small businesses now define the corridor. It is less the “Wall Street of Berwyn” and more a reflection of the community itself: hardworking, diverse, and always adapting.

Connie’s Family Restaurant, 3271 S. Harlem Ave., has been serving Berwyn from its current location since 1944, and Tastee Corner Cafe, 3207 Oak Park Ave., is a go-to diner for breakfast and lunch. At Lavergne’s Tavern, 6546 Windsor Ave., a restored 1960s bar has been transformed into an upscale neighborhood gastropub with casual, yet elevated, dishes. Locals rave about the Italian beef egg rolls and the restaurant’s signature cucumber mojito. Those seeking a beer and a burger can also head to The Garage Smokehouse and Bar, 3202 Grove Ave., which offers American classics with an extensive drink menu.

Oak Park Ave., is a 374-bed teaching hospital with advanced surgical, medical, and cancer services, as well as a 68-bed behavioral health program. Over the past century, the hospital has grown from “Berwyn

Hospital” inside Arthur MacNeal’s house at 33rd St. and Oak Park Ave. in 1919 into a large campus that defines an entire block of the Depot District. Today, it’s also the town’s biggest employer and serves residents and those seeking renowned healthcare, alike.

ROUTE 66

Five score years ago, our forefathers had a vision to enshrine a new highway spanning the entire country, connecting the prosperous cities of Chicago and Los Angeles. 1926 was the year, furthering Western expansion, embracing and continuing America’s Manifest Destiny at the height of the Roaring 20s. In fact, just twelve years earlier, the nation had completed the Panama Canal, so famously documented in high school history books, which linked the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through the Americas. After all the labor poured into carving that canal, the country still lacked a single continuous highway across its own landscape. Then again, the automobile was barely part of everyday life when the canal project began.

Choosing Ogden Avenue to begin that journey was the result of a rich history dating back to a time preceding the early United States of America. Long before the Mother Road, the route was known as the Southwestern Plank Trail, a notoriously muddy diagonal path stretching west from Chicago. For centuries, it was used by Native Americans, and later by fur traders and

early North American settlers. City planners identified the trail as the route for a more permanent roadway, creating the first link in our journey. It was paved as Ogden Avenue in 1920 and was officially designated part of Route 66 in 1926. The new cross-country attraction for America was universal.

With the advent of affordable automobiles, Route 66 gave birth to the renowned “Main Street of America,” a diagonal corridor stretching over 2,400 miles, connecting the Chicago shores of Lake Michigan to the golden sands of the Pacific Ocean in Los Angeles. States competed for sections of the roadway, anticipating the commerce and prosperity that would follow. Cyrus Avery, an Oklahoma businessman and highway official, is widely regarded as the “Father of Route 66.” He had forecast the need to straight-line as much as possible a route connecting Chicago and the surrounding rural Midwest to the West Coast. The Colorado Rockies posed a major obstacle to travel, and as chief consultant to the federal Joint Board on Interstate Highways, he focused on two key goals: promoting economic growth in the nation’s interior and completing the road as efficiently as possible, an ambitious undertaking for the

era. To achieve this, he wisely charted a path that angled south from Chicago through Illinois and Missouri, turned through Kansas, and then continued west through Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California.

In its earliest decades, Route 66 became a symbol of American resilience and hope. During the Great Depression, it earned the nickname “Mother Road,” a term novelist John Steinbeck made famous in his novel The Grapes of Wrath, as it carried hundreds of thousands of farm families displaced by the Dust Bowl westward in search of new beginnings. Following the triumph of World War II, the road carried veterans and their families to Southern California, a substantial demographic shift in our nation's history. For thirty years, Route 66 thrived as a bustling trail lined with neon signs, kitschy Americana, and hundreds of local businesses that defined the American driving vacation that we now refer to as road trips. As the nation embraced the spirit of mobility in the 1940s and ’50s, Ogden Avenue in Berwyn transformed into a commercial titan, eventually earning its place as the first "Car Dealership Row" on the Mother Road. At its zenith, this single stretch was lined with a dozen dealerships.

Svitak Buick, Castle Buick, Family Oldsmobile, Berwyn Nash, Berwyn AMC Jeep, Beranec Pontiac Saab, Bolvino Pontiac, Balsekas Pontiac, Suburban Dodge, Ogden Motors, Jack Reilly Oldsmobile, Jack Phelan Chevrolet, and Anderson Brothers Ford represented the full lineup of Detroit’s major automakers, all competing for attention along the corridor. In the 1950s and '60s, the Chrysler Plymouth Row added another dense cluster of showrooms between Oak Park Avenue and Ridgeland Avenue, turning the stretch into a continuous gauntlet of glass, chrome, and neon.

Ogden Top & Trim, located at 6609 Ogden Avenue, was founded in 1919 by Frank Nesladek, years before Route 66 came into existence. Today, it is proudly owned by John and Carol Mayer, who, along with a dedicated group of Route 66 enthusiasts and Ogden Avenue business owners, continue to champion its legacy. With the rapid growth of car enthusiasts and the increasing significance of travel along this historic corridor, Berwyn’s Route 66 Car Show began to take shape as a local tradition. The earliest events were held in a large parking lot at 31st Street and East Avenue, just north of Ogden Avenue. For roughly six to ten years, the show was staged on side streets and in parking lots rather than directly on Route 66 pavement. This growth would not have been possible without years of dedication from local preservation leaders, including Larry and Mary Torrielo, Kenny Cechura of Jansky’s Berwyn Ace Hardware, John Fey of Superior Awards, Benno and Mariola Ceyer and Rick Ceyer of Weimar Machine, Steve and Liz Antalek, and Larry and Wendy Ohler. Additional recognition is due to Bob Anderson of Anderson Ford and Don Pechous, former alderman and city clerk, whose early support and funding helped sustain the event in its formative years.

Today, the Berwyn Route 66 Car Show is celebrated with pride as an annual tradition. For more than three decades, it has served as a crown jewel of Chicagoland’s automotive heritage, drawing upwards of 30,000 spectators to Ogden Avenue and showcasing the enduring legacy of the Route 66 phenomenon. The event’s most recognized lead sponsor is WeatherTech of Bolingbrook, led by David MacNeil.

This year, 2026, shall mark the Centennial of Route 66 and the 250th birthday of the United States of America. After a brief pause for infrastructure improvements, the Berwyn Car Show is prepared to return on Saturday, August 29th, 2026 with its biggest and boldest celebration yet! We honor our past and hasten a future where the legacy of the Mother Road remains forever enshrined in the American heart.

OGDEN AVENUE

THE ROAD TO BERWYN

Originally known as “The High Prairie Trail,” Ogden Avenue dates back to Berwyn’s earliest origins.

In 1846, Theodore Doty was deeded land in what is present-day Berwyn, bound in part by the trail, which had been used as a trading route by Native Americans. The trail was muddy with large ditches on either side, making it difficult for stagecoaches to traverse and easy to get stuck in. So in 1848, Doty built an 8-foot-wide plank road, known as Old Plank Road or Southwestern Plank Road, between Chicago and the budding villages outside the city.

In 1872, the route was renamed Ogden Avenue after Chicago’s first mayor William Butler Ogden, who had purchased a stake of undeveloped land, then known as LaVergne, along the trail. By 1888, the area began to experience an increase in residents brought in with the addition of the Burlington and Quincy Railroad in 1862 and the LaVergene depot station in 1874.

As the population grew, so did the community’s needs. Thomas F. Baldwin’s estate donated a small piece of land at Ogden, 34th Street, and Gunderson Avenue for a school, and LaVergne School — a two-room stone schoolhouse — became Berwyn’s first public school. It was considered “the prototype of all west suburban schools.” In 1914, an addition was built, which today serves as South Berwyn School District 100’s administrative headquarters.

Still, the route remained precarious. All four corners of Ogden and Ridgeland had deep ditches on each side, earning it the nickname “four bridge corners.” In 1900, some portions of Ogden were covered in brick to make for smoother travel as traffic picked up. Over the next 20 years, the area saw significant development and a boom in new residents. By 1919, houses dotted the residential streets around Ogden, which was home to a growing number of stores.

In 1920, Ogden was paved to accommodate the burgeoning auto age, and in 1926 the roadway was designated as U.S. Route 66, which connected Chicago to Los Angeles. Starting in the late 1940s and early 1950s, the road began seeing the addition of fast-food and drivethrough restaurants to accommodate drivers who wanted a quick, hot meal. Eventually, this culture grew to also include service stations and car dealerships. At one point, Ogden

Avenue in Berwyn had a dozen auto dealerships.

“Ogden Avenue was designed for automobiles when the car was king of American culture,” according to the Route 66 Association of Illinois. “A wide street lined with drive-through businesses and convenient parking served both travelers and residents.”

It remained Rt. 66 until 1976 when it was replaced by Interstate 55. Still, the Ogden Avenue of today preserves and celebrates its auto history with the annual Berwyn Rt. 66 Car Show (returning in 2026), plus a plethora of auto dealers, repair shops, and specialty services — as well as quick-service food options and unique attractions that Rt. 66 is famous for.

As Berwyn and other suburbs began booming in the 1920s, a new numbered highway system was sprouting across America. Route 66 was one such road, and — in the century since — it’s become an icon of progress and connection. In Berwyn, Ogden Avenue is a vibrant reminder of times that have passed, and a present-day nod to all our town continues to offer.

INTERNATIONAL EATS

One of the hallmarks of towns located along the original Rt. 66 is a distinct kitschy character that was meant to help attract drives to local businesses. These included enormous statues, neon signs, and murals in bright lights and vibrant colors. While many of these have been removed over the years, efforts have been made along Ogden Avenue to restore the route’s signature charm with new art projects and installations.

In 2022, the Berwyn Development Corporation received a grant in celebration of Rt. 66’s 100th anniversary which funded a mini-car spindle at Paisan’s Pizzeria and Bar, 6226 W. Ogden Ave. — a smaller-scale recreation of Berwyn’s famous “Spindle” car statue by

While you’re cruising Ogden Avenue, make sure to stop and check out some of the street’s unique shops, like Top Cut Comics at 7122 Ogden Ave. Suite B, and Berwyn’s Toys & Trains at 7025 Ogden Ave.

Since 1998, Berwyn’s Toys & Trains has delighted shoppers and train enthusiasts with hobbyist supplies, stuffed animals, model kits, puzzles, figurines, and games galore. Its location hearkens back to Ogden’s heyday as Rt. 66 — the building was a Chevy dealership from 1950 until 1998. To preserve the building’s history, the new owners decided to keep its original layout. Coupled with its iconic neon sign and retro charm, this is a muststop when in Berwyn.

Across the street you’ll also find Top Cut Comics, which has been serving Chicago’s collar communities and western suburbs since 2016. The local shop specializes in everything from board games to trading cards, action figures, and, of course, comics! You’ll know you’re at Top Cut Comics when you see its signature “Hulk” mural on the outside.

Plus, convenient shops like Walgreen’s, Dollar Tree, and Dollar General are all found along the strip, making it easy to access everyday essentials, prescriptions, and home goods.

artist Dustin Shuler. The iconic sculpture, which was featured in “Wayne’s World,” was demolished at its home at Cermak Plaza in 2008, but its memory lives on in a new iteration along Ogden Avenue.

The same grant also funded a massive Muffler Man statue and public mural at Cigars & Stripes BBQ Lounge, 6715 W. Ogden Ave. The mural depicts a classic “Rt. 66” sign alongside a mash-up of colorful aliens, monsters, and chicken wings, while a giant Muffler Man-style statue—with hot sauce in one hand and a chicken wing in another—watches over the highway from the roof.
