WHAT WE DO PRINCETON VETERANS ORGANIZATION AND LADIES AUXILIARY

The Princeton Veterans Organization consists of American Legion Post #125, Amvets Post #180 and VFW Post #4323. We are also supported by the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary throughout the year. The veterans in all these organizations work together year after year to help improve the lives of veterans and their families. We also provide support to many non-veteran families in need, whether it be financially or with goods such as household items. Many in our local communities have been helped in this way. Our veterans spend many thousands of hours planning, preparing, setting up events and cleaning up afterwards. Like everything else in 2020, Covid-19 affected some of our annual events. We are hoping to get completely back to our normal event schedule here in 2021.
Below is a list of some of the events that we hold, participate in or support financially or in other ways. Most importantly is our Honor Guard duties. In 2020, 955 man hours were spent by members of our Honor Guard providing military rites for fallen veterans at gravesites, funeral homes or churches in Princeton and surrounding communities. We are involved in annual ceremonies on Memorial Day at our local area cemeteries and Soldiers and Sailors Park, following the parade, and on Veterans Day at Veterans Park. We also provide Flag-raising ceremonies at Princeton High School and take part in a program at Logan Junior High in celebration of Veterans Day each year. Annually our Color Guard marches in several parades; Memorial Day, July 4th, Homestead Festival, Utica’s Veteran’s Day parade, and the Christmas parade. We recognize veterans at various local nursing homes with flags and wreaths on specific holidays such as Veterans Day, Flag Day and Christmas. Although we were limited in what we were able to do this past year due to Covid-19, we were still able to offer the recognition they deserve by doing it from outside each of their windows several times in 2020. We hold an annual Veterans Picnic at the City-County Park every summer, free of charge, for all veterans and their families to come and enjoy a pleasant meal together. We support Buddy Bags. Donations to this program provide food for students that may not be getting enough to eat. We provide financial support to our local food pantry. We provide financial support to the Wounded Warrior Project, of Jacksonville, FL. Annual donations to this group support veterans, whether they are wounded physically or emotionally. We help local veterans or veterans who happen to be passing through town when hardships occur, whether it be financially or by providing a gas card or a meal or even an overnight stay to those in need when travelling through our area.
We have worked on and paid for repairs of veterans vehicles when their finances are short. We have also assisted in finding veterans permanent housing complete with furnishings made possible by our community’s generous donations to our annual garage sales. This past year we also assisted two young single mothers who recently moved to our area in setting up their new homes. We donated two Thomas medical equipment bags to the Paramedics of the Princeton Fire Department to use in the ambulances, a proposal suggested to us by the Ladies Auxiliary. We have provided selected clothing to The Closet and to U.S. Again donation sites. We loan medical equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers, canes, crutches, hospital beds and even “potties” to those needing such items. We recently loaned wheelchairs to the Bureau County Health Department to assist with providing Covid-19 vaccinations. We also have a resource for electric scooters that we coordinate and donate to. In the past, we have even built wheelchair ramps allowing a veteran to have access to his home after surgery. Although our post is a “dry post” there is a weekly card game held with several retired veterans and others in attendance, enjoying the camaraderie. During inclement weather, such as we had this past winter, we make “buddy calls” to veterans who live alone, ensuring their health and possible needs. We provide American Legion Scholarship recognition awards to deserving PHS and Logan Jr High students every June. We are a sponsor for Boys State for young men that are interested in pursuing a military career. We provide insurance for our area American Legion baseball team allowing local young men an opportunity to continue in organized sports even after graduating from high school. We rent the Legion Hall to families and organizations, which requires us to maintain a clean environment.
We provide the Legion Hall, free of charge, to the American Red Cross for holding blood drives. The American Legion is also a host for the Flags of Freedom to store and repair the 30’ x 60’ flags that fly proudly at our route 26 and Interstate 80 intersection. The Flags of Freedom committee also holds their meetings at the post. Many of our members are, in fact, also members of the Flags of Freedom. We help the Lion’s Club in their annual clean-up and maintenance of Veterans Park. We are currently planning to reposition the flag poles there to prevent the flags from becoming tangled in the wind. We cooperate closely with the Senior center regarding the loan of selected mobility aids like wheelchairs and crutches. We maintain a Veterans Booth at the Bureau County Fair every year, providing important information and support for veterans that stop by. We hold “Lunch in the Park” cookouts at Soldiers and Sailors Park across from the Bureau County Courthouse. We also have cookouts at Sullivan’s and Walmart. We hold Garage Sales bi-annually (soon to be 3 times a year) at our Legion Hall, thanks to all the generous donations provided by our local citizens. During our most recent garage sale in February, 2021, we used 244 man hours in setting up, maintaining and cleaning up for this garage sale. We normally hold Pancake and Sausage breakfasts at the Legion Hall, but they were set aside in 2020 due to Covid-19. We will begin scheduling them as soon as we are allowed. Our garage sales, cookouts, breakfasts and Hall rentals are how we fund all our activities and pay our monthly bills. Lastly, but still very important, we provide a convenient “drop-off” place for the public to bring their weathered and damaged American Flags. As these flags accumulate, we honor our Nation’s Flag with a respectful “ceremonial burn” of them.
The Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion does many things to support and honor veterans. They join us in our Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies, laying wreaths in honor of veterans who have paid the ultimate price and offering prayers. They donate to all non-profit organizations in Princeton as needed and during Christmas. Easter cards are sent annually to veterans residing in our area nursing homes. They hold bake sales. They handle the annual Poppy Sales campaign in support of veteran’s activities.
Goodie bags, filled with useful items and treats, are packed and provided to our veterans in nursing homes on certain holidays. Covid-19 curtailed some deliveries during 2020, but they managed to provide them last fall and at Christmas and so far in 2021 for Valentine’s Day and the Easter holiday. They proposed the need for Thomas Bags to be donated to Princeton’s paramedics for use in the ambulances and brought the suggestion to the American Legion, Amvets and VFW members.
They assist us with “Lunch in the Park” cookouts. They willingly provide food and help at the Legion Hall when there is a luncheon held after a funeral. They provide much appreciated assistance when setting up and putting away our garage sale items. They put seasonal and holiday touches on our Post home, making it a pleasing place for entertaining. Currently plans are in the works to hold a “soup supper” this fall…….something to look forward to!

It is with the deepest gratitude that we accept the generous support we receive from local communities and citizens that allows us to raise the funds needed for our efforts in helping veterans. THE VFW MEETS THE FIRST WEDNESDAY OF THE MONTH AT 7PM. THE AMERICAN LEGION MEETS THE SECOND WEDNESDAY OF THE MONTH AT 7PM. AND THE AMVETS MEET ON THE THIRD WEDNESDAY OF THE MONTH AT 6PM. You may call the American Legion post at 815-872-1171 and leave a message. Someone will return your call promptly. If you prefer, come and attend one of our meetings. You will meet these veterans that work so hard to find ways to help other veterans and members of our local community.
