When you visit you will find the “Simple Pleasures and Hidden Treasures” that make our county a great place to visit and to live. This guide just barely skims the surface of the many events, small and large, that take place throughout Bureau County each year.

Bureau County is located in North Central Illinois. Bureau County is located 100 miles west of Chicago, one hour east of the Quad Cities and one hour north of Peoria. Princeton is an Amtrak community with a depot that services over 30,000 people a year. Eastbound trains go to Chicago’s Union Station daily or you can hop on the California Zephyr to head west.

Interstate 80 runs right through the middle of the county, making it easily accessible to visitors.

As you travel down Interstate 80 watch for the four huge Flags of Freedom that are located at exit 56 in Princeton which honor our veterans. Bureau County has 869 square miles of fertile farm land, beautiful rural country sides, and many unique villages and towns. We hope you will visit the many communities in Bureau County. Each one has something special to offer, from historical sites to antique shops, recreational areas, festivals, museums and great shopping experiences.

If you like quieter activities, a day spent fishing or walking along the Hennepin Canal is ideal.

Along its banks you will find areas for camping, fishing, horseback riding, canoeing and bicycling. Bureau County is well known for unique restaurants which specialize in delicious fried chicken and other homestyle specialties. The Chestnut Street Inn in Sheffield is an award winning bed & breakfast that features gourmet Mediterranean cuisine featuring locally grown foods. A relaxing night’s stay there will recharge and refresh.

Hindsight is 2020 – ain’t that the truth!

Just a year ago, so many events and festivals were planned or in the planning stage at the first of the year. The year was going to be filled with concerts, car shows, fireworks, carnivals, garage sales, 5K runs, 100-mile run, boat races, fishing tournaments, tractor pulls and much, much more.

And then the coronavirus COVID-19, a pandemic hit. Sadly, we lost family and friends to the virus. Businesses that were not deemed essential had to shutter their doors. Schools were closed and had to quickly come up with a plan on how to teach the students remotely. School sports were cancelled. Restaurants were carry-out only. Some businesses offered curb-side pick-up only. Festivals and events and even weddings were cancelled or put on hold. Non-essential workers had to stay at home, some got to work remotely and unfortunately some lost their jobs completely. It hit hard all aspects of not only our county, but our country and the whole world. We learned a new normal. We learned to flatten the curve, social distancing, masking up, washing hands frequently, and ZOOM meetings.

As things start to open up this year due to less exposures and more citizens being vaccinated, we still encourage following the guidelines set by the local health department by still wearing masks and social distancing.

We will not let 2020 defeat us, we will come back, it may take time but it will happen. We encourage you to visit our web site (www.bureaucounty-il.com) and Facebook (Bureau County Tourism) page to keep up with the happenings as they open up this year.

Flags of Freedom Flag photographed at a Fall Concert on Main

The Flags of Freedom Memorial was completed on Sept 10, 2005. Four flagpoles are located at the intersection of exit 56 from Interstate 80 and Rt. 26 at the north edge of Princeton. The flagpoles are positioned on each corner of the intersection. The “Flags of Freedom” stand in tribute to the men and women who have served, are currently serving or will serve our country in the future. They are a reminder to future generations of the sacrifices made to keep our Nation free and secure.

flags remain flying. The weather is very harsh on the flags. They try to lower them or take them down completely when there is inclement weather to prevent them from getting torn. The flags are expensive

costing $1500.00 each and 12 to 15 are needed each year. The current committee consists of approximately 15 members who are diligently trying to get donations to “keep the flags flying”. They have purchased a sewing machine and do their own repairs as the flags get tattered. They are rotated approximately every six weeks to be repaired. Repaired flags that are too short to be used are sold as “repurposed” to anyone wishing to use them in parades or special events. To donate to the fund – see their Facebook page “Flags of Freedom I-80”.

Each flag weighs 100 pounds and measures 30’ X 60’ feet (1800 square feet) and are hung on 135-foot tall poles. A standard flag is 3 x 5 feet so you can see why these four magnificent lighted flags capture the attention of travelers on Interstate 80.

The “Flags of Freedom” committee, a nonprofit organization, was re-established in July of 2016 in order to financially support the four large flags. The committee is working to raise funds to ensure that these Simple Pleasures, Hidden Treasures

Historic Bridges of Bureau County

Captain Swift Bridge Location: West of Princeton (Directions) From North Main St. in Princeton, turn west on Backbone Road at (Beck’s Gas Station) to Epperson Road and turn left. Go 1 mile and road will fork. Take the right fork and the Bridge will be around the curve. You can also take W. Railroad Ave in Princeton to Epperson Road and turn left.

When the 90-year-old, steel bridge over Big Bureau Creek in Princeton Township needed replacement, the Township envisioned a timber covered bridge that would complement the picturesque rural landscape of the area. An innovative design from Willett, Hofmann & Associates, Inc. made the bridge economical by requiring the minimum amount of wood possible.

Built entirely out of wood using 1800’s concepts, the Captain Swift Timber Covered Bridge offers two traffic lanes, a 16’-3” vertical clearance, a 28-foot minimum roadway width, and bragging rights as the only two-lane, all-timber covered bridge in Illinois. The bridge was completed in 2006. Though it has the look and feel of a 19th century covered bridge, the Captain Swift Bridge was designed to 21st century safety and traffic standards through a unique meld of modern materials, historical accuracy, and innovative design. What may appear as an old fashioned timber bridge is truly a modern engineering marvel.

The bridge uses a burr arch in combination with an inverted kingpost truss. The burr arch was patented in 1804, and the kingpost truss was the most common truss used in the 19th century for timber covered bridges.

Rather than using timber solids, glulam (glue-laminated wood, stronger than solid timber and fabricate-able in any length) was used for the main load-carrying components. An all-wood structure raised concerns about fire protection, so spray-on fire retardants were used and heat detectors, installed and linked to the sheriff’s department and fire station.

While the initial cost of the timber covered bridge surpasses that for an equitable steel structure, the wood will not deteriorate from winter salt, and the roof will protect the structure and extend its life. The Captain Swift Bridge may last 150 years or more.

Red Covered Bridge The second covered bridge in Bureau County is called the Red Covered Bridge. To go to the bridge travel 1 mile north on Main Street (Rt. 26) from Princeton. Cross over I-80 and turn left on 1990 East Street. The bridge is 1 mile from the intersection.

You are still able to drive through the unique bridge but take it slow since it is only one lane. Watch for oncoming vehicles before you proceed into the bridge. Be sure to stop in the picnic area on the north side. As you walk through the unique wooden structure that was built in 1863 you will see a plaque in the bridge that says “For three quarters of a century this bridge, defying storms and floods, has carried the traveler across Bureau Creek. It well represents the unyielding character of those who erected it.

In tribute, to the building committee and to the other citizens of Bureau County who, with foresight and faith, planned and builded well, this memorial tablet is today dedicated - September 5th, 1938.

There is a sign on the end of the bridge that states “Five dollars fine for driving more than twelve horses, mules or cattle at one time or for leading any beast faster than a walk on or across this bridge.”

The photogenic bridge is enjoyed by photographers during all the seasons of the year. Please watch for “no trespassing” signs and respect them. When the bridge was originally built in 1863, it cost $3,148.57. The 149-foot (45 m) span is one of six remaining covered bridges in Illinois, and it is still open to traffic. It was once part of the Peoria-Galena Trail.

The bridge was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on April 23, 1975.

Barto Boat Landing lies on the northwest side of the Spring Valley Bridge, adjacent to Route 89. It offers a deep lagoon for launching from the ramps and is the only calm-water public access to the Illinois River for forty miles.

The Illinois River is also home to many recreational advantages and is enjoyed by area visitors and Spring Valley Citizens alike. For more than 30 years it has been the first stop on the Cabela’s MWC Tournament Schedule, the biggest Walleye competition in the state, drawing fishermen from all over the United States. Home for the Holidays

The Princeton Chamber of Commerce and Bureau County Fairgrounds have teamed up to bring an exciting new event to the area this December called “Home for the Holidays”.

The Bureau County Fairgrounds will be the location for Home for the Holidays which is a drive through event. It will feature many stunning lighted Christmas displays. The displays are sponsored by many area businesses as well as local families. Several have been ordered in memory of a loved one.

This event is sure to entertain people of all ages and spread some holiday cheer.

The spectacular Christmas light drive thru will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights starting Saturday, Dec 4th at 4 p.m. and continuing through New Year’s Day, January 1st.

Coach Roads, scenic country roads that follow the Indian and pioneer trails that brought settlers, miners, Lincoln, and Lovejoy to Bureau, and the lead mines and prairies of northern Illinois. one of Illinois’ first wind farms, or the state’s first “windpowered” high school in near by Manlius. About ten miles southeast of Princeton, the Illinois River dives southward, slipping into the wide north-south valley originally carved by an ancient Pleistocene version of the Mississippi River. The associated natural habitats are mostly open grassland types, dotted with closedcanopy woodlands such as those at Warnecke Woods, Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park, MillerAnderson Woods Nature Preserve, and Condit’s Ranch Campgrounds.

Prairies dominate the remainder of this loop.

The McCune Sand Prairie sits on superporous glacial moraine soils, resulting in a unique assemblage of dry-country grasses, wildflowers and small trees, including a number of species more common to regions much further west. Visit the Hennepin & Hopper Lakes Restoration Project to view how the Illinois River floodplain is being reclaimed and restored.

the United-States. Today Reagan’s Illinois Heritage is celebrated throughout Northern Illinois in several communities that make up the Ronald Reagan Trail. Designated by the Illinois General Assembly on May 21, 1999, the trail tells the story of Reagan’s life from his birth in 1911 to his graduation from college in 1932. Communities along the Trail offer Reagan historic sites and walking tours, Reagan themed events and many other historic and fun attractions. Visitors can learn about Illinois history, play a game of golf, visit a gambling boat, see a theater production or sit back and relax on the Rock River where Reagan served as a lifeguard.

Owen Lovejoy Owen Lovejoy (Jan 6, 1811 – March 25, 1864) was an important and influential person from Princeton and Bureau County. He was a minister, abolitionist, and a congressman.

Two hundred years ago, when Owen Lovejoy was born, things were very different in the United States. Slavery was a fairly accepted practice, especially in the south and it would take a Civil War (1861-1865) between the states to bring slavery to an end. Owen Lovejoy, who was born in Maine, came to Princeton in 1834 and served the Congregational Church as its minister He was very vocal in his antislavery speeches and because of his belief in anti-slavery, Lovejoy opened his house on East Peru St. (US Hwy 6) as a station along the Underground Railway. “It was widely known in Illinois that Lovejoy was “in charge” at Princeton and that the fugitives passing through Princeton from slavery to freedom were riding the “Lovejoy Line.”” (www.nps.gov/nr/ travel/underground/ill.htm).

slaves sought the Lovejoy house as a refuge along the way to freedom. By hiding slaves Lovejoy along with others put their lives in danger. Lovejoy’s own brother Elijah, was slain in Alton for his anti-slavery views. Owen Lovejoy was elected as a US Congressman in 1854 where he continued his antislavery speeches. Lovejoy died before the end of the Civil War; however he did live long enough to hear President Abraham Lincoln read the Emancipation Proclamation.

The Owen Lovejoy house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. We encourage all visitors to stop by and take a tour of the museum. In the house take notice of the basement and of the large storage area above the stairway, where perhaps the slaves were hidden.

The Lovejoy Home was restored in 1972. A dedication ceremony was held with the annual Pork Producers’ barbeque. This event has grown into a four day festival full of class reunions, craft shows, 5K Run, BBQ Rib Cook-off, concerts and a huge parade The 50th Annual Homestead Festival “Rock’n Down the Highway” will be held September 10-12, 2021.

Fairgrounds. Instead of walking through the haunted fairgrounds buildings last year it was converted to a drive through event that hundreds of families were able to enjoy. Look for this event to return this October with fun and scares for the whole family. A Halloween Parade will be held on Main St in Princeton on October 9 at 5:30 p.m.

Come out and see some of your favorite ghouls.

A new event has been added in December called Home for the Holidays.

This will be a drive through Christmas light spectacular which will be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights beginning Dec. 4 and continuing through January 1.

Usually the Calendar of Events in the Bureau County Visitors Guide has many pages of listings of events like festivals, church suppers, races, parades and so many fun family events. With the Covid-19 pandemic still in place many of these events are still on hold while some are in tentative planning stages waiting for the Governor to ok group get togethers. Here’s an update on some of the events being planned for 2021 The Bureau County Fairgrounds is usually bustling with activity yearround. Most events were cancelled there since March of 2020 but since then the Fairgrounds exhibit halls have been used for several months for a Covid vaccination clinic.

Get your hot rod shined up! Two Cruise-In’s have been planned for Princeton on Sunday May 16 and July 25 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Rotary Park at the north end of Princeton. Another cruise, the IL Valley Toy Run will be held Sunday October 17 starting at Soldiers and Sailors Park on South Main St in Princeton. Please bring a new unwrapped toy to donate to make some kids Christmas happier. You can enjoy the beautiful sights around Bureau County on the Toy Run cruise.

Currently the plans are to hold the annual Bureau County Fair August 25 – 29. It will be a modified event due to Covid restriction with events to be announced soon.

Other events at the Fairgrounds will be announced as the restrictions on attendance are lifted. Last year’s 4H Fair was done virtually with the exhibitors sending in videos of them showing their projects. Plans are underway now for the 4H Fair to be held July 14-16 with a modified, in person, showing schedule.

A Fainting Goat Show will be held July 9 & 10.

Psycho Silo Saloon, Langley, IL has several events planned for 2021.

Walnut is planning their Walnut Day’s Celebration the weekend of July 2, 3 and 4. Their festival always ends with a bang with a huge fireworks display.

The Vietnam Memorial Wall replica and tributes will be on display at the Psycho Silo Saloon on Memorial Day weekend, May 29-31. On Friday, May 28 there will be a Vietnam Wall Escort Parade and Veterans Open House at 4 p.m. The parade line up begins at 3 p.m. at City County Park and will travel down Main St in Princeton toward Sheffield.

Come out and help honor our veterans. Memorial Day weekend is always a huge music weekend at Psycho Silo Saloon with many popular bands playing Friday through Monday. A Memorial Day service with a 21 gun salute will be held there at 3 p.m. on Monday with the Flags of Freedom.

The Wyanet Festival will be held on July 8, 9 and 10 with a carnival, entertainment, Queen pageant, a craft/vendor/ farmers’ market, tractor and car show, baby contest and great food.

The volunteers make this happen so please help support the Wyanet Community Club as they plan their events this year.

Sunset Ridge Motocross track near Walnut has added the Nuclear-Sunset 2021 Power Series races on May 9, Sept 19 and October 9 plus they will have other race dates during the season.

Neponset is hosting their 10th Annual Cruise-In on Friday, June 11 from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Along with the classic cars there will be music and food. On June 26, the Neponset American Legion will be presenting their new event the 2021 Truck and Tractor Roundup (T-N-T) and parts swap meet.

The Hennepin Hundred is a 100 mile long ultramarathon running race that is held on the Hennepin Canal State Trail. This year it will be held on Oct 2 & 3.

Runners start at 7 a.m. in Sinissippi Park in Sterling and they run throughout the day and the night. The 50 mile runners finish at Lock 17 just outside of Wyanet. Runners can do a 50-mile leg of the race or turn around and run back to complete the 100-mile ultra-marathon which ends in Colona. The 50 and 100 mile course follow the Hennepin Canal State Trail, Illinois longest multi-use trail, across historic locks and lift bridges, past the autumn corn, picturesque farms and postcard towns of Northern Illinois. You are welcome to come out and cheer them on or even volunteer for the aid

LaMoille Buffalo Days will be held June 11, 12 and 13 with live music and entertainment. Friday will feature the Brat Pack (totally 80’s music). Saturday will be Alika and Arlynn Band and Sunday’s musical entertainment will be Burn N’ Bush. Great food and many fun events are being planned.

2021 is the 50th anniversary of the Princeton Homestead Festival which will be held Sept 9-12. The theme this year is “Rockin Down the Highway.” Plans are underway now for the annual activities like the parade, craft and vendor show, class reunions, BBQ Rib cookoff, beer gardens, live music and so much more. A Doobie Brothers tribute band – The Doobie Others – will perform in concert on Friday night at Soldiers and Sailors Park. A tribute to Keith Knudsen, a former Doobie Brothers band member, who lived in Princeton will be held at the Apollo Theater on Friday at 4 p.m. A Star in the Walk of Fame will be placed in his honor.

The Shadows of the Blue and Gray Civil War living history reenactment returns to City County Park on October 9th and 10th. Look carefully and you might see President Lincoln visiting with the troops. Watch as the battle unfolds in front of your eyes and listen for the cannon fire.

This is a great learning experience for students and adults.

The Old Danish Church - Sheffield, IL Story from Off The Beaten Path written by John Purvis

The first Danes arrived in Sheffield and settled the area in 1854, holding their first services in 1868. St. Peters Danish Evangelical Lutheran church was organized in 1869 and by 1873 they had 33 members. Originally they had bought a small church which proved to be too small so a new church was built and dedicated on September 112th, 1880. The Sheffield congregation also has the distinction of being the oldest Danish Lutherans in America.

When the new church opened they boasted 150 members and dues were: $7.00 a year for farmers with 80 acres or more, $6.00 a year for those with less than 80 acres, bachelors were asked to pay 4.00 a year and spinsters paid the least, $2.00 a year. Pastors were paid $500.00 a year. Eight years after opening its doors membership had risen to 200 members and the congregation was thriving.

Over the years alterations were done and undone. Some of the historical discoveries made include original stenciling along the top of the inner walls, a painted mural was discovered behind Continue on page 18

In one corner is a replica of the “Danmark” a Danish naval cadet training ship used in WW II. There are two bells in the steeple both of which work and are rung for special occasions. In 1973 the church was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

A Witness to History

As you drive along Route 6 in western Bureau County you come to the village of Mineral. If you turn south on county road 10 (1300 N Ave) and follow it for 3.5 miles you will come to the Witness Tree. At 250 or more years old this giant Burr Oak tree has stood as a witness to every remarkable achievement in the America’s.

It was here when the Continental Congress wrote the Declaration of Independence. It was here when the railroads made their way from sea to shining sea. It was here when the first shots were fired at Fort Sumter. It was here when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. It was here when Man first walked on the moon. It has been standing before there was even an America.

The Witness Tree sits on what used to be the old Sauk Fox trail, a native American trail that went from Rock Island on the Mississippi thru the Detroit and on to Canada. This tree was allegedly the meeting place for Chief Shabbona and the Fox and Sauk tribes.

When the railroad was being built near Mineral this tree was used as a reference or ‘Witness’ point from which it now gets its name. If you’re ever in the area it sits by the side of the road in a quiet little glen all it’s own and is definitely worth a moment to look upon its wonder.

It was east bound Mile Marker 47.

In 2020 we learned a new term for a storm – “derecho”. Defined as “a line of intense, widespread, and fast-moving windstorms and sometimes thunderstorms that moves across a great distance and is characterized by damaging winds”. August 10, 2020 found Bureau County in the path of such a derecho. The derecho started in Nebraska and swept thru Iowa, Illinois and Indiana leaving a path of destruction. It flattened crops, took down trees and destroyed buildings. Here in Bureau County, we were not spared the wrath of the storm as trees, crops, and buildings sustained damage and it took down our 9-1-1 dispatch tower. It also destroyed a landmark. That landmark was the barn that stood on the hill at Mile Marker 47 on east bound side of I-80.

Ever since I-80 was built through Bureau County back in the 1960’s, the barn stood proudly on the hill overlooking the interstate at Mile Marker 47.

At times travelers and locals could be seen parked alongside the interstate taking pictures of “the barn” and the windmill. Eventually the windmill succumbed to age and the weather and it came down, but the barn still stood and people still stopped and took pictures. The barn withstood the ice, snow and winds of the harsh Illinois winters and the rain, hail and windstorms of summer, but finally the derecho of 2020 struck the final blow and it collapsed. The remnants of the barn have been cleared away, but the barn will remain in our memories and in the pictures and drawings. The barn was at I-80 Mile Marker 47.

Barn Quilts of Bureau County A splash of color around every corner

We hope you will get off of the Interstate and take some of the back roads and a little slower trip as you drive across Bureau County. Did you see that flash of color in that barn yard? Pay close attention to the farms that you are passing. You may see one of the over 101 Barn Quilts that have been placed on farm buildings in 88 locations all over the county. “What’s a Barn Quilt?” you wonder. It is a quilt block design painted on a special type of plywood called MDO board. The blocks are usually either 4x4 feet or 8x8 feet. No fabric is used in the design, it all comes from paint. They are painted with exterior paint and each displays a colorful quilt block, either one chosen from a traditional quilt design or from something personal to that farm owner.

This nation-wide phenomenon was born in 2001 in Adams County, Ohio, when Donna Sue Groves made a promise to her Mother to paint her a quilt block. Her Mother was an accomplished quilter and she thought this would brighten up their colorless, grey barn. This barn quilt that was painted for her Mother has sparked the Barn Quilt movement throughout the United States and Canada. The book “Barn Quilts and the American Quilt Trail Movement” by Suzi Parron with Donna Sue Groves tells the story of one of the fastest-growing grassroots public arts movements.

A small group of women came together as a group that loves quilts and now the rich tradition of the barn quilts. They started the group, The Barn Quilts of Bureau County, in 2014 with just five quilts which has now grown to Simple Pleasures, Hidden Treasures

The committee’s goal is to have barn quilts in all 25 townships in the county.

Several of the townships have multiple quilts hanging already. The Quilt Trail was designed to celebrate our rich agricultural heritage, showcase our rural areas and promote agri-tourism, the arts and a sense of community pride in Bureau County. A barn quilt lends a homey feeling to a farm and is just another of the ways our community honors our ag roots.

“How do they pick their design” you may wonder. Some of them are 26

chosen by the name of the quilt design or by a favorite hobby or tradition. For example “The Ohio Star” hangs on a barn outside of Ohio, IL. One farm has the “Pinwheel” design painted in green and yellow. It shows the colors of the family’s favorite football team and tractor style along with the windmill design too. Family heritage shows on some of the quilts that have a Swedish styled flag or Swedish Dala horse designs. Livestock on the farms show up on some of the quilts with horses, cattle and sheep designs. Some of the quilt names are really unique“Farmer’s Daughter”; “Corn & Beans”; “Mariners Compass”; “Loyal Daughter”; “Double Wedding Ring”; “Gentleman’s Fancy”; ‘Honey Bee”; “Carpenters Wheel” or “Flying Geese”. Designs are found in quilt books, on quilts handed down through the family and also on Pinterest.

You can see four examples of barn quilt designs on the red building inside the main gate of the Bureau County Fairgrounds, 811 W Peru St, in Princeton. There are maps available at the Prouty Building in Princeton for the quilt trail around Bureau County.

You can do a self-guided tour of the barn quilts at any time, summer or winter. The map in the guide is for informational purposes; please use the addresses for the best help in locating

the farms. Note that the quilts are to be visible from the road. If there is no safe place to pull off the road to view the barn quilt you may pull into their driveways. Please remember to check for traffic as you slow down to view a quilt. We are indebted to our barn hosts for their hospitality.

Barn quilts on the Bureau County trail are required to be on an agricultural building. You may see other quilts in your travels that are in town or on homes and garages. Painting the designs just takes a ruler, special paint masking tape, multiple colors of exterior paint and a good imagination.

The Barn Quilt committee can make arrangements to paint one for your farm building if you don’t feel artistic.

Colton Schoolhouse The Colton Schoolhouse is located on the property of the Owen Lovejoy Homestead on the east side of Princeton. Bureau County Parks PRINCETON PARK DISTRICT Princeton Park District maintains over 192 acres of parks and its mission is to maintain and develop a creative, effective and responsive park, recreation, and nature resource system for residents and visitors to enjoy quality leisure opportunities. The Princeton Park District opened a 9 hole Disc Golf Course located at the Bureau County Metro Center and the adjacent Alexander Park in the fall of 2006.

The object of the sport is very similar to that of golf, except that flying discs (also known as Frisbees) are used in place of clubs and balls.

Hormel Ponds The ponds are nestled in a secluded basin surrounded by wooded bluffs, marshland, the Hennepin Canal and a bottomland woods that beavers have flooded. The setting is relaxing and invites one to explore its diversity and offers a pleasant location for family outings. A state fish-stocking program supplements the ponds’ natural restocking that results whenever the Illinois River exceeds its banks.

Miller-Anderson Woods Along Route 29, at the Bureau-Putnam County border, wooded bluffs rise above the broad Illinois River valley to create Miller-Anderson Woods Nature Preserve. The preserve protects old-growth upland forest, ravines, valley forest and a floating bog. A narrow, ribbonmarked, moderately difficult trail guides one through the woodland variety which displays endangered plants and Ohio buckeye in its most northern range. Once on top and near the bluff’s edge, one is treated to a panoramic view of some of the Illinois River valley’s richest wetlands. Very often seen riding the air currents are turkey vultures and, occasionally, bald eagles.

MINERAL McCune Sand Prairie 150 East Street

Rural Mineral offers two truly unique features, an Illinois desert with cacti, and a more than 200 year old oak tree that was already rather large when Native Americans crossed the Illinois prairies on the Sauk Trail.

North of Mineral about five miles on county 150 East Street is the McCune Sand Prairie where native Illinois cacti, the prickly pear, grow in abundance. This is not a good place to wear sandals, as some of the prickly pear are rather small and hidden in the grass.

The Witness Tree

County Road 10 and County Road 1300N

The Witness Tree is a more than 250-year-old giant burr oak tree at the junction of County Road 10 and County Road 1300N three miles south of Mineral.

This large oak tree along the trail was supposedly a meeting place for Chief Shabbona and the Sauk and Fox tribes. Later on, when the railroad was being built south of Mineral, surveyors used this tree as a “witness” or reference point for their line, from which it now gets its name.

Mautino State Fish and Wildlife Area was dedicated in 1991 and covers more than 900 acres. This park offers 15 lakes that have been stocked with a healthy population of fish. Park guests use the lakes for boating (electric boat troll motors only), fishing and canoeing. Other park activities include hiking, hunting, picnicking (bring your own blanket), and wildlife observation. Access is limited.

What is the Hennepin Canal?

The Hennepin Canal State Trail is an ideal destination for a relaxing day of picnicking, hiking, biking, fishing and old fashioned family fun. There are plenty of picnic tables along the 104.5-mile linear park spanning five Illinois counties (Rock Island, Bureau, Henry, Lee and Whiteside).

and day use areas are located all along the canal. Vehicular (RV, pop-up) camping is allowed and is the same rate as tent camping, $8.00 per family unit. There are no dumping/pump-out stations located at the park.

Fishing along the Hennepin is well worth the trip whether you’re angling for bluegill, crappie, walleye or bass. The Canal is open from April 15 to October 31 annually for horseback riding. Bring your own horse and prepare to enjoy 48 miles along the main canal and over 25 miles along the Feeder.

Constructed from 1892 to 1907, the Hennepin Canal played an important role in U.S. history and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Hennepin was the first American canal built of concrete without stone cut facings.

Although the Hennepin enjoyed limited success as a commercial and industrial waterway, its construction involved a number of engineering innovations, and its waterway, locks, aqueducts and adjoining towpath continue to provide a beautiful recreational resource.

Before exploring the wonders of the Hennepin Canal, stop in at the Visitor Center near Sheffield. Several displays help illustrate the canal’s past, including tools used to build and operate it, as well as the natural features of the canal corridor.

The towpath provides 155 miles of hiking/ biking fun from the Illinois River to the Rock River, with the feeder canal path to Rock Falls. Segments of the trails are open to horseback riding and snowmobiling in season. The canal is open to boating and canoeing (locks are no longer operational and must be portaged). Directions to the Visitor Center The Hennepin Canal Parkway basically parallels I-80 in Bureau and Henry counties in west central Illinois. The Parkway’s Visitor Center is one mile south of I-80, just west of Route 40. East or westbound travelers on I-80 should take Exit 45, turn right (south) on Route 40. They almost immediately cross the Canal and in about 1 mile is the brown sign directing them to the Parkway Visitors Center. Turn right (west) and proceed to the Center at 16006 875 E. Soldiers & Sailors Monument If you have attended any of the Princeton Community Band concerts you have sat in the park next to the Soldiers & Sailors monument. While listening to the patriotic music have you ever looked up at the Civil War soldiers and winged victory on the monument and wondered about the history of the structure? Well we have. signifying that the battle is over and victory is won.

Upon the ledge at each side of the monument is a bronze statue, representing the branches of the service.

The Infantry on the west side, Cavalry on the north, the Artillery on the south and the Navy on the east side.

Eight bronze tablets, two on each side of the monument, contain the names of all of the volunteers who enlisted from Bureau County, resided in the county since the Civil War and were living here in 1910. The bronze figure of “Victory” is fifteen feet high and weighs approximately 3000 lbs. The other statues weigh about 900 lbs each. There are two tons of marble in the monument, and the granite is estimated to weigh 180 tons.

The cost to construct the monument was $25,000. The dedication ceremony was held on June 12, 1913 and about 3500 people attended. One hundred Civil War veterans were seated on the speakers platform.

The Soldiers & Sailors Monument is located on S. Main Street, across from the Bureau County courthouse in Princeton. The monument is constructed of marble, granite and bronze. It is 50 feet tall. The architect was Frederick C Hubbard, a Chicago sculptor. On June 12, 1913 it was dedicated to the Bureau County veterans that enlisted in the Civil War. It is one of the largest winged monuments in the country.

An article from the June 17, 1913 Bureau County Republican gives the following details. The grey granite was quarried in Hardwick, Vermont and the marble which lines the interior is from the quarries in Rotland, Vermont. The Bronze work is from the American Bronze foundry in Chicago. The foundation under the monument proper is solid concrete 8 feet deep. The base is 25 feet square.
