Familiar faces taking over area coaching ranks BY KEVIN HIERONYMUS khieronymus@bcrnews.com There are enough new basketball coaches in Bureau County to field their own team this year. All five new coaches, however, are familiar faces, though one is in a new place.
Jason Smith, Princeton boys
Smith makes the move down the road from neighbor Bureau Valley, where he was a trusted assistant, but had one successful year as the man in charge. He filled in during the absence of head coach Jason Marquis, who took time away from the bench when his daughter, Marissa, became ill. The Storm didn’t miss a beat under Smith, winning the regional championship and reaching the sectional finals. With Marquis back in charge, Smith was an assistant during the Storm’s Elite Eight run last year. “Coming to Princeton has been different, but the same,” Smith said. “Everyone here from the fans to the other coaches in the building to the faculty and up have welcomed me with open arms. The kids have been great so far. “Different as in not knowing where anything is, to getting lost in the school several times.”

New Princeton boys coach He jokes that his two sons, Landon (seventh grader) and Bryson (BV sophomore), are not quite on board with dad’s move to the rival Tigers. “The boys have not and probably won’t wear ‘Tiger Gear’ but they have the colors in their closet to support when they can or want to,” he said. “A lot of trash talking so far from Bryson, and it is only the first week of the season. Good times.” Smith said what he learned most from Marquis is that basketball is so much more than a game. “You have a chance to be a positive influence on these young adults/kids. Not everyone gets those chances, so take advantage of that while you can. I am so thankful for that,” Smith said.

Gilbert Moreno, DePue girls
The new Lady Giants coach is well known around DePue basketball and will be a familiar face for the girls. He’s spent the past three years coaching the eighth-grade team as a volunteer. Moreno, a 1972 DePue grad, has been coaching basketball in some capacity in DePue close to 20 years, off and on. He previously coached the varsity boys for eight years. “They were looking for a coach. I figured I might as well do it. The girls already know me,” Moreno said. “I never thought I’d get back into it. One of the reasons I did, I retired, so I’ve got a lot more time. “I enjoy being with the kids. They kind of keep me young. Sometimes they give me a headache.” Moreno, 67, will be doing a lot of teaching this season with a squad of just two seniors, five sophomores and three freshmen.

The new Storm head coach was the sophomore coach for two years, but took the past year off from the bench to work on his master’s degree, which he completed this fall. His past experience on the staff has given Sinclair great familiarity with the girls he will coach this year. “The current junior and senior class I have now was the last F/S class I was coaching before leaving the program before. This allows for me to know my current players’ strengths and how we can find ways to put the girls in the best position to be successful on the basketball court,” Sinclair said. “There are some newer drills that we are running in practice along with a new playbook that we will be learning throughout the season.” Sinclair was born and raised in Peoria, where he graduated from Richwoods High School in 2012. He played basketball two years, football for one year, specializing in soccer for four years, while earning all-state recognition. He continued his soccer career at Millikin University, graduating with a degree in biology secondary education.

Brandau needed something to do when he retired as principal at Allen Grade School, so he became a teacher’s aide and bus driver. Now he’s picked up the high school girls basketball coaching job. “My wife’s still working, so I don’t want to be home by myself, and I don’t have a hobby. When you’re in education for so long, your kids are your hobbies,” he said.

Most recently, he was coaching junior high girls basketball at Allen. “They needed somebody because coach Wilson resigned and went to Eureka College as the assistant coach. I thought maybe I could try it for one year and see how it goes,” Brandau said. “Wanda DeLong is helping me, and we worked together at the junior high level, so I think that will help me out a lot, too.”

Of the five new coaches, Orlandi is the only one to have been on staff a year ago. He served under former head coach Brian Holman, now at Seneca, for two years and said he learned a lot from him. It’s made for a smooth transition. “It was a great experience working with Holman the last two years. I got to see the ins and outs of running a varsity program and was able to see how he managed and dealt with issues both on the court and off. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience before taking this job,” Orlandi said. “I still talk to him pretty regularly, so it’s nice to be able to go to him with some different questions I have and see how he handled the same type of situation. There’s a lot that goes into being in charge of a program, so it’s been nice to be able to go to him with any questions or concerns I have. I’m thankful of that, because he’s been a big help.” The Lady Devils have won four straight

He also coached Manlius/ Tampico boys and most recently junior high boys and girls at Allen School in LaMoille. regionals, so Orlandi is under the opinion, if it’s not broke, don’t try to fix it. “Holman had a good system, so we’ve kept a lot of his system in place. I thought it was important as these girls have been in this program for three to four years, and I didn’t see any sense in completely changing things, and that’s not something I wanted to do anyway,” he said. “So, for the most part, you’ll see a lot of familiarity in what we’ve done in the past with a few new things sprinkled in from time to time.” Orlandi grew up in Dalzell and now lives in Ladd. He is a fifth-grade teacher and track coach at Spring Valley JFK. A 1996 Hall grad, Orlandi played football, basketball and baseball for the Red Devils.

Smith is a 1995 graduate of Wyanet High School, playing in the co-op with Western under coach Brad Bickett the last year before the Bureau Valley district formed. He’s coached high school football for three years and high school basketball for six years. He’s been coaching kids for more than 20 years either in baseball, basketball or football. Snith is the fourth coach to make the move from Bureau Valley to become head coach at rival Princeton in the past 11 years, following Dave Moore (football in 2008), Duane Price (golf in 2013), Tiffany Gonigam (girls basketball in 2016).

Jaci Cinotte (Hall, Jr., 5-5/G): The Second Team All-BCR and TRAC East All-Conference pick continues to raise her game, named to the All-Tournament Team at Oregon .She averaged 12.5 ppg, 2.3 steals as a sophomore up on varsity. Kenzie Coleman (Princeton, Sr., 5-7/G): The lone senior on the team is leading the Tigresses in many facets of the game, scoring 22 points against Stark County in tournament play this week at Princeton. She was named all-tournament. Coleman earned Second Team All-BCR and TRAC East Honorable Mention All-Conference last year. Dalton Dean (Bureau Valley, Sr., 6-0/G): A role player for last year’s Elite Eight team, Dean is ready to step up for the prime team for his senior year. He scored 21 points, including five treys in Monday’s season opener against Annawan at the Wally Keller Invite. Paul Hart (St. Bede, So., 6-2/G-F): If Monday’s season-opening 44-point outburst is any indication, Hart is
primed for a big sophomore season. The Bruins cub was the only underclassmen selected to the All-BCR Team last year (third team), receiving Honorable Mention All-Conference in the TRAC East. He was the Bruins’ leading scorer at 12.4 ppg and co-leader in rebounds (5.0). Trez Rybarczyk (Hall, Jr., 5-11/G): The Hall hot shot is the top returning scorer in the area, averaging 16.2 ppg with 6.4 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.8 steals last year. He was a First Team All-BCR and TRAC East selection. Jamie Reinhardt (Princeton, Jr., 6-0/G): As a sophomore, Reinhardt was the Tigers’ top scorer at 12.8 ppg to go along with 2.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game. He was a Second Team All-BCR selection.
