48th Homestead Fest packed with attractions Big parade, music, food, activities galore PRINCETON — The 48th annual Bureau County Homestead Festival has many activities and special events in store for the entire family as the community celebrates its past, present and future with the theme “Journey Home.”

The festival gets an early start with several events Thursday, followed by three days packed with activities and attractions Friday through Sunday.

Thursday • During the day — Max Halberg Sr. Memorial Golf Tournament, Wyaton Hills Golf Course, two player scramble – 9 or 18 holes.

Active, involved Princeton native is grand marshal Ted Johnson has volunteered for many community service groups over the years PRINCETON — The 2019 Homestead Festival grand marshal is Ted Johnson of Princeton.

Johnson is a 1955 graduate of Princeton High School. He maintained a strong business background in Princeton over the years.

In 1949, he worked at Standard Oil gas station on the corner of Elm Place and Main Street.

In 1959, he owned and operated Ted’s Neighborly Service on East

Peru Street, which is now where Hap’s Auto Repair is located.

In 1963, he was hired as the advertising manager of the Bureau County Republican. In 1978, he opened Johnson’s Carpet Shoppe, which is where he retired from in 1995.

In 2003, he started Barrels of Fun, which is a highlight in the Homestead Festival parade each year.

Johnson has been involved in countless community organizations

over the years — many of which he led as president or director.

Just to name a handful: Boy Scouts of America, Princeton Rotary Club, Princeton Chamber of ComTed merce Ambassadors, Johnson Princeton’s Retail Merchants Association, Prince­ton Elks Lodge, Princeton Park District Board, Princeton Masonic Lodge, United Methodist Church, Princeton Jaycees, Princeton Elementary School Board, he’s a life member of the Bureau County Historical Soci-

ety and Bureau County Fair, he’s the Princeton Township clerk, and is also currently the secretary of the Princeton Planning and Zoning Committee.

During an introduction of Johnson, Tim Smith, a member of the Homestead Steering Committee, said, “This person truly believes Princeton is a model community. He calls it Illinois’ quiet treasure.”

Born in Princeton to Mervin and Elinor Johnson, he married Dorothy Harmon in 1966 and they had three children of their own, Jeff, Kevin and Christine. They also have six grandchildren.

Blues band Mississippi Heat to perform Sept. 7 Concert will take place at Alexander Park PRINCETON — Mississippi Heat will perform from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Saturday, Sept. 7, at Alexander Park in Princeton.

Led by harmonica master and songwriter Pierre Lacocque, Mississippi Heat is a world-class Chicago Blues Band. Their motto is “Traditional Blues With A Unique Sound” as they present fresh yet vintage-based musical ideas.

Mississippi Heat’s name is a reflection of Pierre’s reverence for Mississippi’s blues culture and music.

The band’s conviction is that there is no deeper music than Delta-inspired blues to express what lies in everyone’s soul.

They have received worldwide critical acclaim, including from Living Blues Magazine: “Mississippi Heat delivers its traditional urban blues with a freshness, energy and competence that makes them a treasure on today’s Chicago scene.”

CHILDRENS’ FUN FAIR Saturday, Sept. 7

Mosaic outdoor art dedication, celebration planned for Sept. 8 PRINCETON — The Princeton Public Arts Commission, with the support of North Central Illinois ARTworks (NCIA), invites everyone to the art dedication and celebration at the Mary Uthoff Memorial Walkway from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, st 523 S. Main St. in Princeton.

There will be fun for all ages, including a photo opportunity with the new mosaic sofa, hands-on art, face painting and a living statue.

The dedication will take place at 1 p.m. and will feature remarks from mosaic artist Susan Burton. The final day of activities for the Homestead Festival are also taking place throughout Princeton that day.

The public art pieces will include a sofa, two chairs and a table designed and created by Susan Burton. A community build was hosted in May, where all ages gathered to create 75 small mosaics that have been incorporated into the finished pieces of art. Jyl Morse, of Hoffman’s Patterns of the Past, donated china that was used during the community build and for the artist’s original mosaic designs.

The walkway was dedicated back in 1977 as the Mary Uthoff Memorial Walkway. Mary Uthoff (1886-1974), was a longtime Bureau County educator and served as superintendent of Bureau County Schools from 1924 to 1936.

This public art installation is made possible by local community donations, along with Princeton tourism funds. The Arts Commission is grateful for those whose generous donations will be recognized with naming rights of the furniture as follows: the sofa in loving memory of Joe and Lou McCauley by their family; the table in loving memory of Winnie and Allen Murphey, owners of Hoffman’s Patterns of the Past by Jyl Morse; and both chairs

by Central Bank. In addition, the commission recognizes Ann Crosby for donating the hand-made pottery naming plaques for the furniture.

Donations are still needed to reach the fundraising goal and can be dropped off or mailed to Princeton’s City Hall. Checks should be made payable to Starved Rock Country Community Foundation (SRCCF).

Boom Boom and the Bodega Boyz

Prairie Arts Council will stage ‘Deathtrap’ Sept. 6-8 PRINCETON — The Prairie Arts Council announces the opening of “Deathtrap,” one of Broadway’s most successful comedy-thrillers.

“Deathtrap” will be performed in conjunction with Princeton’s 48th annual Homestead Festival at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, and Saturday, Sept. 7, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8.

All shows are at the PAC Theater, 24 Park Ave. East in Princeton.

Director Joe Ennenbach of Peru has cast five local actors: Ken Schroeder of Princeton as Sidney Bruhl, Karen Roger of Utica as Myra Bruhl, Josh Bush of Princeton as Clifford Anderson, Jill Marti of Princeton as Helga ten Dorp and Gary Talsky of Spring Valley as Porter Milgrim.

Ennenbach describes the show as “one of the most cleverly constructed plays an audience will ever enjoy, amusing at times, shocking at times, but never boring.”

“Deathtrap” is produced by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service Inc. Written by Ira Levin, the play tells the story of Sidney Bruhl (Ken Schroeder), a successful writer of Broadway thrillers, who is struggling to overcome a string of flops. A possible break in his fortunes occurs when he receives a script from Clifford Anderson (Josh Bush) a student in the seminar Sid-

ney has been conducting at a nearby college — a thriller that Sidney recognizes immediately as a potential Broadway smash.

Sidney’s plan, devised with his wife, Myra (Karen Roger), is to offer collaboration to the student for co-credit. Or is it? Add in wacky medium Helga ten Dorp (Jill Marti) and the Bruhl family lawyer, Porter Milgrim (Gary Talsky), and “Deathtrap” provides twists and turns that will spellbind audiences until the very last moment.

Other production staff members are production manager Dixie Schroeder, Dave Walters on set construction, set decorator Ron McCutchen, costumer Jill Marti, stage manager Maddie Devert and set artist Laurie Innes.

Movie is sixth annual Widmark Homestead film PRINCETON — Movie fans who attend the Apollo Theater’s annual Richard Widmark Homestead Festival movie are in for a treat.

“Pickup on South Street,” a 1953 film noir that will be shown starting at 9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 6, is renowned for several reasons.

In 2018, it was selected for preservation by the National Film Registry for being “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.”

Its director is the legendary Samuel Fuller, who in his long and influential career was also a screenwriter, novelist, actor, war hero and newspaper reporter.

And for the former Princeton resident turned Hollywood actor, the

film provided “one of the most vivid characters Widmark would ever play,” according to Eddie Muller, host of Turner Classic Movies’ “Noir Alley.”

“Underworld types get mixed up with spies” was a recent description on the channel guide when the film played on TCM in June.

Widmark plays Skip McCoy, a pickpocket who pilfers a prostitute’s purse on a crowded New York subway train, only to discover he now possesses top-secret government information.

The cops and FBI agents are soon on his trail, picking him up from his waterfront South Street shack for questioning. Communist spies are also on his trail, and they will stop at nothing to retrieve the vital microfilm.

Owen Lovejoy (1811-1864), a congressman, minister and abolitionist who aided escaped slaves through the Underground Railroad before the Civil War and who also was a friend of President Abraham Lin­ coln.
