Struna: ‘We are actually operating now on less money than we did four years ago’ By Becky Kramer news@bcrnews.com
SPRING VALLEY — Superintendent Mike Struna presented the tentative budget for the 2014-15 school year to the board at the Hall High School Board meeting Wednesday evening. Stru-
na said the budget is going to show about a $100,000 overall deficit, mostly due to the losses of $12,000 in state aid and $48,000 in local taxes. Struna is certain that by the next reading of the budget, the deficit amount will be less. At this time the exact amount of revenue is unknown from
special education, driver’s education and transportation. Struna said he and his staff will also look for other ways to cut expenditures. “Hall High School has a revenue problem, not an expenditure problem,” Struna said. “We are actually operating now on less money than we did four years ago.” Struna is also hoping to be able to cut the amount of money spent this year
on operations and maintenance. He indicated there is no reason to spend a lot of money on repairs to the old building, since it will be torn down in 2015. The board is very pleased with the work being completed by maintenance director Mark Scheri and his staff. Scheri has been able to save the district money by completing some essential repairs himself and not having to pay another outside company.
The tentative budget will be posted in the school office for the next 30 day,s if anyone is interested in viewing the full budget. The board will be meeting at 6 p.m. Sept. 24 and is expected to approve the budget at that time. The regular board meeting was changed from the Sept. 17 to Sept. 24 and will follow at 6:15 p.m. Tony Orlandi of Leopardo Construction provided the board an update on

SPRING VALLEY — It’s going to take a few years for the Spring Valley Elementary School District’s budget to flow more consistently, following the John F. Kennedy School addition project. The district is looking at a deficit budget for Fiscal Year 2015, mainly because of the project, according to Superintendent Jim Hermes. Hermes reviewed the tentative budget at Wednesday night’s school board meeting, before it was approved for the normal 30-day public display. The district has budgeted for many items purchased for classrooms in the new addition — art room tables, computer lab chairs, office furniture, computers, wiring, etc. “All that goes into this budget, so there’s really no big concerns,” Hermes confirmed. One of the biggest ticket items budgeted was the $50,000 for computer software. “We really want that to be perfect in the new building,” Hermes explained. “We want the Internet working as well as it does now and that cost includes servers, wiring, everything. Right now we are sitting at $39,000. We did go high when we budgeted $50,000, but I can’t see us going much higher than that.”

Dalzell issues burn warning DALZELL — Dalzell residents are reminded to think safety and follow village fire procedures when it comes to burning fires on their properties. If anyone is going to be burning a large brush pile, fence row, large bonfire or anything other than normal yard waste this fall, there are several things that are recommended, Dalzell Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Rich Croissant said. First of all, residents should call BuEComm at 815-872-1420 to let them know of the burn and where it is located, Croissant said. Calling BuEComm will help BuEComm know not to page the Dalzell Fire Department if they get a call from the non-resident of the burn, he said. Also, the resident conducting the burn should have extinguishing materials, such as a garden hose and tools, ready in case the fire gets out of control, Croissant said. Residents should not burn near buildings to limit the risk of those buildings catching fire. They should not burn things on days when the wind is more than 15 miles per hour. Residents should not use flammable liquids, such as gas or diesel, to start the fire due to the fast ignition which can cause injuries. Also, a fire should never be left unattended, Croissant said.
the progress of the new school. Many changes have occurred during the past month due to exterior face brick work and stone work being started on several of the buildings. All walls are in place, so the footprint of the new school is in place. Orlandi was proud to announce the project is currently meeting its budget, schedule and performance goals.
