Happier by the hour ...

As the afternoon patrons crowd around the “Specials” chalkboard — recently dusted free of its mothballs — and pressed against the windows in an effort to see the golden taps inside, it is evident the hour draws near ... Happy Hour, that is. Local bar and restaurant owners/managers are just beginning to explore their options in light of recent legalization of happy hour in Illinois. Gov. Bruce Rauner signed a bill July 15 that brought
happy hour back to the state for the first time in 26 years. Happy hour was deemed illegal in 1989, based off the precedence of accidents and arrests related to excessive drinking and individuals operating vehicles while impaired. Various bar owners in Princeton indicated they are excited about the law being reinstated and said they are just sitting down to discuss what specials to run and what hours they want to utilize during the week, as the new law does have some stipulations. The law allows happy hour specials up to four hours each day, while those specials cannot exceed 15 total hours per week. There will be no late night

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — A Princeton man has pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Virginia, with conspiracy to produce child pornography. Carl Zwengel, 50, of Princeton pleaded guilty on July 10 in the federal court. Other defendants named in the indictment are: Anthony R. Evans, 53, of Grahamstown, South Africa; William J. Morgan, 35, of Essex, N.Y.; Milton Smith Jr., 33, of Lorton, Va.; James E. Hancock, 44, of Thomasville, Ga.; Christopher McNevin, 36, of Carlisle, Ohio; and Brian Hendricks, 41, of Mt.
Juliet, Tenn. According to a press release from the U.S. District Court, the seven defendants allegedly operated two websites designed to trick children between ages 8 and 14 into engaging in sexual activity on Internet web cams. All defendants were indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of conspiracy to produce child pornography and conspiracy to distribute child pornography. The release said, “The defendants allegedly created false profiles on social networking sites like YouTube and Chateen pretending to be young teenagers. Using these profiles,

It’s 4-H Fair time again! Area 4-H members convene at Bureau County Fairgrounds to showcase efforts By Eric Engel eengel@bcrnews.com
PRINCETON — Local youth will experience the culmination and reward of their hard work throughout the last year at the 2015 Bureau County 4-H Fair, taking place July 23-26 at the Bureau County Fairgrounds in Princeton. The 4-H organization is a community-based program that supports the education and development of youth ages 5 to 19, with more than 250
projects ranging from fashion and food to livestock and woodworking. All 4-H members choose what field to delve into and work on their projects throughout the course of the year before coming together to showcase their work at the fair. University of Illinois Extension for Bureau County program coordinator Sue Brooker said 4-H offers a hands-on learning opportunity for children all across the United States, and more than 2,000

Other activities for children, as well as plenty of music, food and drinks completed the fifth annual Music on Main. The event was spearheaded by Sheffield Pride, and all proceeds go back into the betterment of the community.

Hitting the road on the Z-Tour
BBB alert: MasterCard phone scam hits Northern Illinois CHICAGO — Another phone scam has resurfaced in Northern Illinois. Consumers have reported they are receiving automated messages stating their MasterCard has been hacked and that they need to call and verify their information, so that a new card can be issued. The Better Business Bureau is alerting consumers to these calls and warns that if an automated system calls asking for credit card information, it’s probably a scam. The scammers are after the card number and expiration date but more importantly the security code, making it possible for them to use the card for online purchases. “It’s difficult to say who will get the calls; some of them are probably random or robo-calls,” says Steve J. Bernas, president
and CEO of the Better Business Bureau serving Chicago and Northern Illinois. “It is also possible that the scammers purchased the numbers off mailing lists or from a hacked database.” The scam works two ways. The consumer is asked to “press 1” to speak to an operator who will then ask for the information on the card. In other instances, the request will be to “press 1” to fix the issues with the card and a pre-recorded voice will give instructions to enter the 16-digit card number, the expiration date, and finally the security code. “Under no circumstances should you do provide any information,” stated Bernas. “If you fear there is a possibility that your card may have been hacked, hang up and call your credit card provider.”
Anyone who has a credit card is a potential victim of this scam. If you should receive one of these calls you should: • Not return a call from a pre-recorded message. • If speaking to a live “operator” ask for his/or her name, department and extension. Then hang up, call the number on the back of your card and ask for that person. • Never provide personal or financial information to someone you do not know. • Feel free to just hangup. • Using the number on the back of your card or on your statement call the credit card company that issued your card if you have security questions or concerns. SV band will have a new rhythm Board approves hiring of a new band director SPRING VALLEY — In a special meeting of the Spring Valley Elementary School Board on Thursday, July 16, the board
accepted the resignation of band director Mike Harris and approved the hiring of Brett Balika as the new band director. According to the minutes, the board also hired Melissa Actis as a special education teacher and Greg Case as a part-time
custodian. Uncommitted construction funds were approved to be permanently transferred to the operations and maintenance fund. A three-year contract with HR Imaging was also approved.

PRINCETON — The fifth annual Z-Tour event was the best ride yet. Brian Church, Z-Tour Bike Ride director, confirmed the event brought in a record number of biker riders. The unofficial tally sits around 601 bikers, who came from all over Illinois and beyond. Church confirmed there were also bikers from Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Wisconsin and Missouri. “Z-Tour has become an event that gives families something to do when they come to the Illinois Valley area,” Church said. “Someone might be coming from Connecticut, but they’re staying with a brother in Spring Valley.” The proceeds haven’t yet been tallied, but Church believes the event raised about as much as last year, which was $21,000. All proceeds from the Z-Tour event benefit the Zearing Child Enrichment Center. Church said the positive feedback received from bikers this year was overwhelming, as many complimented on the well-marked roads and the number of

helpful volunteers. “Some said it was one of the best biking events they’d ever been to in all the world or in the country,” he said. “We’re just ecstatic about the feedback and bringing that kind of atmosphere to the community.” One thing the Z-Tour Committee could not control, however, was the high heat index on Saturday, which turned a few bikers away. With the heat, however, Church said Keenan Campbell, Bureau County Emergency Management director, and his volunteers played a key part in helping riders who were having difficulties. “They helped immensely coordinating riders who were struggling and needed to be picked up,” he said. “Without their assistance and involvement, we could have had some overexposure to the heat and other real problems.” Church said there were
some walk-ups because of the heat, but for a majority of the riders, volunteers told them to ride smart and consider a shorter distance route than they had planned to ride. “The heat was a challenge for many of those riders,” he said. Church thanked all the volunteers who helped out on the day, including the Bureau County Sheriff’s Office and Princeton Police Department. As previously reported, the Z-Tour event requires about 100 volunteers to help the day run smoothly. “We’ve had tremendous support. It helps our reputation for this event. Our volunteers are why our numbers have grown and continue to grow,” Church said. The sixth annual Z-Tour is already is the works. Church said to save the date for July 16, 2016. children and young people in Bureau County participate in the 4-H program throughout the year. “The 4-H Fair generates positive youth development by teaching kids how to research, practice their craft and what it’s like to experience trial and error,” said Brooker, who will be coordinating her second 4-H Fair this year. “It improves their sense of responsibility and leadership skills, and seeing growth within our youth is always a good thing.” Participants will display their projects to be judged throughout the weekend, and in many fields, those who receive the highest grade will be invited to showcase their work at the Illinois State Fair on Aug. 17. The judges, who support their communities by volunteering their time and expertise, are all given materials that list the participants and their projects as well as the rules for judging each particular show. All projects receive a blue, red or white ribbon, while exemplary work receives a state fair ribbon. Many forms of livestock, including sheep and goats, poultry, swine, cattle, even dogs

Once a real child was on the conspirators’ websites, the members of the conspiracy, still pretending to be young teenagers, allegedly convinced and encouraged the children to engage in sexually explicit activity on their own web cameras, and the conspirators recorded that footage. The pornographic videos of the children were then allegedly distributed to members of the conspiracy. Law enforcement agencies have disabled both websites.”

Sandy Kuhn, owner of Somewhere Else in Princeton, said she always had normal specials from open to close on any given day, and now those specials have to fall under happy
hour guidelines. Although she is not elated about the new law, as a business owner she understands that to remain successful, she must maneuver with the rules and regulations impressed upon her, especially here in Illinois. The overall response to the new law sounds positive, however, rarely is a complaint heard from an owner with a happy crowd or a customer with a heavy wallet. To date, Morgan and Princeton’s Zwengel have pleaded guilty, and their sentencings have been set for Sept. 18 and Oct. 2, respectively. Smith has a plea hearing set for Aug. 14. McNevin has a plea hearing scheduled for Aug. 21. Hancock, Hendricks and Evans are scheduled for a jury trial on Sept. 8. Zwengel and Morgan, as well as the other defendants (if convicted), could face a minimum mandatory sentence of 15 years in custody and up to a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison. The maximum statutory sentence is prescribed by Congress, but will ultimately be determined by the federal court based on sentencing guidelines and
other statutory factors. Zwengel must also pay a fine of $250,000, pay full restitution, forfeit of assets and receive a five-year mandatory minimum term of supervised release up to a maximum life-term term, once released from prison. The supervised release is in addition to prison time. The case was investigated by the Violent Crimes Against Children Section of the FBI with assistance from the South African Police. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Alex Nguyen and Matt Gardner and Trial Attorney Lauren Britsch with the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section of the U.S. Department of Justice are prosecuting the cases. NEPONSET — Tammy L. (Bennett) Hartman, 51, of Neponset passed away at 4:05 a.m. Friday, July 17, 2015, in the emergency room at OSF Saint Luke Medical Center in Kewanee. She was born June 15, 1964, in Kewanee, the daughter of Robert and Connie (Stabler) Bennett. Tammy graduated from Neponset High School in 1982 and from Moline Public Tammy School of Nursing in 1985. She was curHartman rently employed as an ICU nurse at Advocate BroMenn Medical Center in Bloomington-Normal and had also worked at Swedish American Hospital in Rockford. She was an avid Chicago Cubs and Bears fan who enjoyed her dogs, chickens, fishing, kayaking and being outdoors. She especially enjoyed being a part of her daughter’s life and supporting her in her activities. Survivors include her parents of Neponset; her daughter, Katelyn “Katie” Hartman of Neponset, currently a senior at Northern Illinois University; and three brothers, Tim (JoAnne) Bennett of Kewanee, and children, Kayla and Jake, Terry Bennett (Kelli Humphrey) of Cambridge and children, T.J., Torri, Kalli and Nate, and Robert “Tony” (Julie) Bennett of Normal, and children, Ali, Emma and Casey. Cremation has been accorded and a memorial visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 22, at the Rux Funeral Home in Kewanee. From the editor’s desk Wow! Another busy weekend in Bureau County. • I’ve never seen so many bicyclists in Bureau County during Saturday’s Z-Tour bike ride that benefited the Zearing Child Enrichment Center. Talk about a well-orchestrated event! I must have seen a bazillion signs all over the county, instructing bicyclists on their individual choice of routes. If anybody ever needs to know how to conduct a great event, I’d suggest talking with the organizers of Z-Tour. You folks did a great job! • It was hot; it was sticky; but the fifth annual Music on Main was another grand Terri Simon event, held Saturday on Sheffield’s Main Street. Even after I took some photos of the event, the music that could be heard through town was a nice addition and seemed to serenade the July evening. Here’s what I thought was so neat — the event plays to the entire family with all kinds of activities for all ages. It was a good time. • Ohio’s Ol’ Fashun Threshun Days was a great way to take a step back in time, while enjoying some good old-fashioned family fun. Everyone at this event is always so nice and eager to talk about how farming used to be done. It takes a lot to put on this event, but the Bureau Valley Antique Club, which sponsors the event, makes it look easy. • The Danny Sissel Memorial fundraiser to benefit St. Jude Children’s Hospital was a fitting tribute to an area man who was loved and respected by many. Orchestrated by Sissel’s wife, Colleen, I didn’t get to attend, but I heard it was an enjoyable evening, while raising money to help children with cancer have a future. See some of our photos from the weekend on Page 2. ••• Well, it’s that time again. Nominations are being accepted for our third annual Women of Distinction Awards. These awards are geared to honor those women in the Illinois Valley who have gone the extra mile to make life better for us all. We all know someone who fits that description. Now is the time to nominate them to receive one of these awards. If you get a chance, take a jaunt to the Bureau County Fairgrounds later this week. Every time I go, I leave feeling so impressed with today’s young people. Others don’t feel the same To the Editor, This is in response to the letter from Shirley Lampkin Cinnamon on July 14, 2015. It truly saddens me that an individual can be so heartless as to publicly humiliate an entire community. I grew up in Wyanet and have lots of friends and family still living there. I can honestly say the town has never looked better! As mentioned in Shirley’s letter, the building in which we graduated high school no longer stands (buildings don’t last forever), but the spirit and pride remains with those individuals who passed through its doors. As for the fate of the grade school, this is yet another old building, and some things are beyond a town’s control. What was not mentioned was all the great things about our small hometown! The park and baseball diamond have never looked better, with many updates and new facilities. The library celebrated a huge milestone this year and continues to prosper. The Wyanet Summer Festival continues to grow bigger and stronger each year, and the committee has done a wonderful job at changing

Means to Me.” Students begin by competing at the local post level. Post winners advance to district competition with the district winner advancing to the state competition. State first-place winner will compete for their share of thousands of dollars in awards. The national firstplace winner is awarded
$5,000 and an all-expensepaid trip to Washington, D.C. Each year, more than 125,000 students participate nationwide. The deadline for student’s entries is Nov. 1, and interested students and teachers should contact their local VFW post for more information or email VFW state at vfwil@vfwil.org.

It’s taken awhile, but the Princeton Fastpitch Church League is back on schedule. Last week’s make-up doubleheaders at Westside got the league all caught up on games after many rainouts this month. Princeton Bible Church rallied from a 5-0 first-inning deficit to surprise St. Matthew’s 11-9. It was St. Matthew’s first setback, The Bible Church stayed on the field to finish a suspended game with Bunker Hill, holding an 8-2 lead when play resumed in the third inning. Bunker Hill quickly erased that deficit with seven runs in the bottom of the third and held on for a 13-12 win. Adam Gutshall fanned the last two PBC batters with the bases loaded. United Methodist (8-1) remained in first place with a 6-5 win Saturday over St. Matthew’s (7-2) on Eric Anderson’s walk-off bloop hit. St. Matt’s beat Princeton Bible Church 12-3 Friday. PBC came back to top People’s Church 17-15 in eight innings late Friday. Church bulletin: The final week of the regular season will play out July 31-Aug. 1 The post-season tournament to crown the league champion will run Aug. 3-15 at Westside Park. St. Matthew’s is the defending champion.
Thunder rolls to B League Softball title
AT LAMOILLE: The BVN Thunder created some real thunder in the girls’ B League tournament, rallying to defeat the Princeton Athletics 14-13. The A’s took a 13-10 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning. The Thunder’s Madison Jackson hit a two-run double to tie the game at 13. Sam Bohm finished off the Thunder rally with a walk-off, game-winning drive to left field. Thunder coach Jeff Monier said he was glad the Thunder rallied for the win in the first game, because he feared the A’s would have all the momentum going into a second title game in the double-elimination tournament. The A’s had to beat the undefeated Thunder twice for the title. Karly Konneck was the winning pitcher, returning to the circle after some early relief from Morgan Ringle. The Thunder finished the tournament 4-0 with wins over Wyanet (16-15), Princeton Cardinals (1510) and Tampico (9-1). The Athletics did their best to run straight A’s in the tournament. After an opening loss to Tampico, they defeated the Princeton Royals 14-12 Friday and the Cardinals 13-7 Saturday. They came back Sunday to avenge their loss to Tampico with a 7-5 win and led throughout Sunday’s title game until the end. Tampico finished third, Kewanee finished fourth and the Princeton Cardinals fifth.
Sheffield-Buda blanks Cardinals in Little League finals
AT WALNUT: Sheffield-Buda blanked the Princeton Cardinals 10-0 to claim the WBV Little League crown in Walnut Sunday. Winning pitcher Carter Salisbury (four innings) and reliever Isiah Fisher combined for a two-hit shutout. Brock Foster went 3-3 at the plate for Sheffield-Buda, and Max Wollerman smacked two doubles.

PRINCETON — The Princeton High School tennis program will host the Tiger Tennis Classic Saturday, July 25, for doubles and Saturday, Aug. 1, for singles. There will be junior and adult divisions. In the junior division (boys and girls), there will be three age groups: 14 and under, 16 and under and 18 and under. In the adult division, there will be two age groups: under 40 and over 40. The doubles tournament held
July 25 will have men’s doubles, women’s doubles, junior boys and girls doubles and adult mixed doubles. The singles tournament Aug. 1, will have men’s singles, women’s singles and junior boys and girls singles. Awards will be given to first and second place in the main draw and consolation in each division. The tournament costs per person are: Adult singles, $14; adult doubles and junior doubles, $12; junior singles, $10 plus one can of balls per event.

Sheffield-Buda had a 9-8 opening night scare against Annawan, but then rolled with an 11-5 win Saturday over BVN Thunder. Salisbury had three hits against the Thunder and Foster and Fisher added two each. The BVN Thunder downed the Princeton White Sox 17-7 for third place Sunday and Wyanet defeated Annawan 11-3 for the consolation title. The Princeton Cardinals used a 9-8 squeaker over the White Sox Saturday to move into the championship game.
