Progress before payment Spring Valley aldermen looking for integral results from local business before investing By Eric Engel eengel@bcrnews.com

SPRING VALLEY — The Spring Valley City Council discussed the details of a facade grant application on Monday, June 6, as they were concerned with providing money to renovate the exterior of a local business without first executing an examination of the interior. Spring Valley resident Dan Sawin applied for a business revitalization grant for his business at 102 W. St. Paul St., and he was present at the public health and safety meeting June 1. He was told by the aldermen they needed a schedule with a timeline deciphering his plan of action for

the internal renovations, and alderman Ken Bogacz stated Sawin did not provide them with a project completion date as of yet. Bogacz suggested the facade grant be tabled for a later date, explaining the aldermen were not aware Sawin would be present at the June 1 meeting, and therefore did not have the adequate time to contemplate the full scope of the situation and present the proper questions to Sawin. The aldermen all agreed they wanted to see initiative from Sawin to improve the inside of his business before they provide funds to shape up the outside — with Spring Valley Building Inspector

Quality prizes donated by area businesses will be available, and the cost is $30 for adults and $15 for youth ages 10 to 15.

Bogacz called two different water and sewer meetings — Wednesday, June 15, and Tuesday, June 28,, both at 6:30 p.m. — to discuss the maintenance and service agreement of the RO system associated with the water works in the city. The second meeting will allow professional representatives working on the RO system to explain their tactics and answer any questions. Economic development director Debb Ladgenski noted the sign-up is underway for the triathlon, which will involve shoot-

PRINCETON — The Princeton City Council meeting on Monday, June 6, began with a resident of Bailey Court, just off of Backbone Road, discussing the amount of dust created by motorists on the unfinished road. The complaint was taken under advisement, and the current 20 mph speed limit may be temporarily lowered until the road is resurfaced. The mayor explained the upcoming work was bid out for July. Commissioner Ray Mabry confirmed the dustiness created by faster moving vehicles and stated the scheduled work should be completed in roughly five days, once the resurfacing is underway. The board also approved a new ordinance which declares using, keeping or storing any upholstered furniture, including mattresses, manufactured primarily for indoor use, in any yard and/or unenclosed porch a nuisance. Another resolution was adopted altering the sequence of resolution numbers and is an administrative change prompted by an error. In other business, the board approved the purchase of a new Pierce Arrow-XT rear-mount pumper engine for the fire department which is not to exceed the full procurement price of $669,503. The new engine will take approximately a year to receive and will replace the current engine which the city has had since 1986. The board also approved the purchase of a Terex aerial bucket and truck chassis, along with a Vermeer BC1500 diesel wood chipper for the electric department. The bucket and truck is not to exceed $215,000, and the chipper is not to exceed $60,000. These purchases will allow the city to bring the service of tree trimming/ line clearance back to the city rather than contracting it out. In other business: • A revenue and expenditure report will now be part of the city manager’s report at future city council meetings and will help track expenses as the year progresses.
