A time to remember, honor Memorial Day 2017 is set for Monday, May 29. This federal holiday is observed to remember the people who died while service in the nation’s armed forces. Originally dubbed “Decoration Day” after the American Civil War in 1866, when the Grand Army of the Republic — which was a Union veterans group founded in Decatur, Ill., established the holiday as a time for the United States to decorate the graves with flowers of the Union war dead. By the 20th Century, Union and Confederate holiday traditions merged, and Memorial Day was established to honor all Americans who died in military service. While the most important aspect is the remembrance and honor of those men and women who bravely gave the ultimate sacrifice to our nation, the Memorial Day holiday also signifies other activities, including families decorating the graves of all their family members, even if they didn’t die in military service. Memorial Day also signifies, for many, a day off of work, which allows many families to attend Memorial Day services and host a cookout or picnic with family and friends.
