Rockin’ the Runway The Flags of Freedom wave proudly at Exit 56, welcoming one and all to Princeton. The sight of those four flags has long been a patriotic message to those who make the stop in Princeton, as well as those who pass by on Interstate 80.

On Friday, March 24, area residents will have an opportunity to help support the upkeep and continuation of the Flags of Freedom at an event at Wise Guys, located at 2205 N. Main St., Princeton.

Dubbed Rockin’ the Runway, the star-spangled event to benefit the Flags of Freedom, begins at 6 p.m. with entertainment beginning at 7 p.m. Kent Harmon is the emcee for the evening with a special guest appearance by Frankie (the Chi-Town Hitman) Wolsfeld.

Event-goers can expect to see special appearances by comedian and social media sensation Dionne Alexander and Chicago Bears Super Bowl champ Mike Richardson. There will also be comedy runway skits for all to enjoy.

You’ll want to come hungry, since organizers say “heavy hors d’oeuvres” will be served.

There will also be a live and silent auction throughout the event. Rediger Auction Service has donated its time as the auctioneers. A feature on the live auction is a 2005 Buick Terraza — a seven-passenger sport utility van, donated

by Piehl Motors of Princeton.

Tickets can be purchased at the door or prior to the event at Piehl Motors, Centrue Bank, First State Bank, ServiceMaster DSI and Grandma Rosie’s Sweet Treats.

Apollo + Northwoods = A win-win deal

PRINCETON — The movie-going experience at the Apollo Theater in Princeton is about to get even better.

On Friday, March 10, Jay Schneider, owner of the theater, signed a two-year prepaid lease agreement with Northwoods Community Church of Peoria — meaning, local members of the church will be able to use the facility on Sundays for services, and Schneider will be able to use the money paid upfront for renovations he’s been wanting to do in the theater for quite awhile.

Those upgrades include new soundproof curtains, new flooring and new seating in both theaters, which are expected to be finished no later than the beginning of May. “It’s great for the community. It’s great for them because it will allow them to grow.

And it’s great for me,” he said. “These are renovations we’ve always wanted to do.”

While Schneider was unwilling to say just how much the lease agreement was worth, Lara, his wife, said the cost to install new soundproof curtains alone will be $20,000. The current curtains hanging in the theaters haven’t been replaced in 30 years and have been patched a few times here and there.

Many will remember a few years back when the Schneiders attempted to install new flooring and theater seats. However the new floor tiles started popping up a month after they were installed, and the new seats didn’t hold-up long, either. The Schneiders were forced to pull several seats from the theater, which took away from ticket sales.

Multi-Site Director Scott Cramer at Northwoods Community Church said this lease agreement is a win-win for everybody.

“It’s literally money that we would have been spent to insulate or paint the walls of an empty warehouse somewhere,” he said.

“But we thought if we could partner with someone where that investment is utilized seven days a week instead of an hour a

week at some warehouse, that was really where our heart was.”

Cramer said the improvements will allow families to have a better movie-going experience.

“I get goosebumps just thinking about the impact that the investment has on the community right away here in this theater, not only for our people, but just for the community to come in and enjoy it,” he said.

Steve Cowser, a front-line leader for Northwoods, said they wanted to bring value to Jay and his family and the community.

“We want him to stay,” added Charlotte, his wife, who is also another front-line leader for Northwoods.

Bureau County members of the Northwoods Community Church, which is based in Peoria, have been meeting together since July 2015. The meetings started in the home of Tom and Sherri Sears, who are also front-line leaders. The group later moved to the former bank building in Tiskilwa. When the members quickly outgrew that space, they moved again to the Bureau County Farm Bureau. With Sunday services averaging about 50 members each week, the search for a new meeting location was again on their agenda.

Now with a plan to use the theater throughout the next two-years, they look forward to the new opportunity. The plan is to wait and see whether or not the Bureau County group will outgrow the space, once the lease agreement expires.

“We’ll just have to wait and see how it works for the both of us,” Schneider said.

New members are always welcome to attend services at the Northwoods Community Church location. Services are broadcast live on the theater screens. The first service at the Apollo Theater will be Sunday, April 9, at 11 a.m.

“We welcome everyone to come check us out,” Cramer said. “Our target is that person who doesn’t have a church home, and steeples and stained glass make them uncomfortable.”

A Salute to Ag Annual event is set for March 24

PRINCETON — The Princeton Area Chamber of Commerce will host its third annual Salute to Agriculture event Friday, March 24.

Attendees will hear from keynote speaker Jay Vroom, president/CEO of CropLife America, who plans to talk about growing food and leaders in the ag industry.

Vroom is a Princeton native, Bureau County landowner and relative to local farmers Lynn Hultine and Evan Hultine.

Due to the success of the Salute to Ag events over the last couple years, the Chamber Ag Committee will be presenting its inaugural ag scholarship to two local high school recipients.

Derek Fetzer, chairman of the committee, said qualifications were based on community and school involvement, the desire to pursue either a two- or four-year degree in an agriculture-related field and GPA. “The Chamber wanted to give back to the ag community in the form of a scholarship for those students who are planning to pursue higher education, “ he said.

Every year, the Salute to Ag event brings together ag leaders of all generations.

Along with Vroom, the event will also feature presentations given by Bureau County FFA members, and the winners of the annual agriculture student art contest will be recognized.

Bureau County Farm Bureau Director Jill Frueh has been working with the art

contest, and revealed this year’s theme is “Farm to Fork.”

“We encourage students, through our classroom lessons, to be aware of how the ingredients from their meals are grown by farmJay ers and come from farms.

Vroom “This allows them to understand the importance of agriculture to their daily lives and how important the agricultural economy is to their community,” she said.

“The Farm to Fork theme highlights this lesson,” she added.

Frueh is looking forward to the event and said it’s a celebration that encompasses many aspects of the ag community — from recognizing students and the Ag in the Classroom Program to ag business and the local farm leaders.

“Agriculture is a large part of this community.

‘This breakfast brings several aspects of the industry together in one event to celebrate its successes,” she said.

Chamber Director Kim Frey said Salute to Ag got started three years ago when it was decided the Chamber needed to create an ag committee that would work to better recognize agriculture efforts across the board.

“The reason we started doing it was because we’re in a rural area.

“We continue to get more and more ag-related members, and we wanted to recognize them,” she said.

“It’s our way to saying thank you to the Farm Bureau and their contributions and what they do for this community.”

Who is Jay Vroom?

Vroom has served as president and CEO of the trade association known as CropLife America (CLA) since 1989. CLA is the leading U.S. trade group for the crop protection industry in the U.S. Vroom in a founding member of the CropLife Foundation, serving as chairman since its inception in 2001, and now serves as the foundation’s vice-chair, since 2015.

He sits on the board of directors for the Agriculture Retailers Association, Asmark, National Wheat Foundation, the National Association of Manufacturers Council of Manufacturing Associations and the Soil Health Institute. He is also a member of the Farm Foundation Roundtable Steering Committee and the North American Climate Smart Ag Alliance Steering Committee.

Vroom was a member of Future Farmers of America and served as an elected state officer. Today, he is a member of the FFA Foundation’s Individual Giving Council and Board of Trustees.

Vroom co-chairs the Coalition for the Advancement of Precision Agriculture and the CEO Council.

He is a member of the Friends of the National Arboretum (FONA) Council.

He graduated with honors from the College of Agriculture, Consumer and Environmental Sciences at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Vroom was raised on a grain and livestock farm in North Central Illinois and continues to own the farming operation.

WYANET — The Raymond A. Sapp Library’s computer classes continue through May on the second Tuesday of each month.

The library’s book group has been meeting for 17.5 years. The group meets on the fourth Thursday of each month.

They also celebrate member’s birthdays with a quarterly lunch. The book the group will be discussing in March is “Emma and Me” by Elizabeth Flock. If you love reading and would like a lively discussion of literature, come join the fun. The library has books available for the March discussion. Stop in and grab one to read, and then join the group at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 23, at the library.

SPRING VALLEY — The children’s library has story time on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 6 p.m. During this time, children are able to read stories, given a craft to put together and are served refreshments.

The library board of trustees holds its meetings on the second Tuesday of the month at 4 p.m. in the library meeting room.

OHIO — Wednesday, March 29, at 4 p.m., the Bureau County Farm Bureau will host a program on where food comes from. There will be a story time and activity afterwards.

Saturday, April 8, 10 a.m., the library will host its annual Easter egg hunt in the library. There will be food, games and crafts, as well as an Easter egg hunt.

LADD — Tuesdays at 10 a.m., the library holds preschool story times, which include stories, crafts, songs and snacks. Children from ages 2 to 5 are welcome to attend with a parent or guardian.

WALNUT — The library will be hosting an art and craft fair on Saturday, April 8, to coincide with the vendor fair being held at the Walnut Community Center. Anyone who has a craft they’d like to sell or artists looking to sell their work should contact library Director Michele McAlvey at 815-379-2159.

The library is also asking patrons to donate empty ink cartridges and old cell phones. The library is able to recycle them for cash.

LAMOILLE —The library has received many great new reads for adults, teens and children of all ages. New videos have also made their way to the library.

No need to pay for a movie rental when you can pick them up free at the library with a valid library card.

Therapy Thursdays is ongoing at the library. Come and go between 1 and 4 p.m. Materials will be furnished, or people may bring their own.

DEPUE — On the second Tuesday of every month, the library hosts blood pressure and blood sugar screenings for free. The screenings are administered

by St. Margaret’s Health from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.

TISKILWA — On the first Wednesday of each month at 4:30 p.m., the library’s book club for adults meets.

Every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., the library hosts a yoga class, where participants enjoy camaraderie with others and are challenged mentally and physically.

Cost is $5 per person.

BUREAU — The Leepertown Township Public Library is open from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday; and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The library has computers for patron usage, as well as copier, scanning and fax services.

Hello, my name is Henrietta Nickelsen and I had a recent stay at Colonial Health Care and Rehabilitation Centre after I encountered the inability to stand on my right leg.

My leg was very weak. As a result of choosing Colonial I found a welcome by administration and the therapy department. The employees were friendly and helpful. I was using the therapy department mostly and the care and help I received was excellent, the staff of the department were very helpful and well trained. An evening of Princeton poetry and prose PRINCETON — The Prairie Arts Council will sponsor an evening of Princeton Poetry and Prose with local poets, writers and storytellers at 7 p.m. Friday, March 24, at the Prairie Arts Center, 24 Park Ave. East in Princeton.

The program will feature recently published Princeton poets, readings of classic poetry and prose by Princeton neighbors, stories of recovery and hope, and a few surprises to entertain anyone who loves the written and spoken word. The evening will end with refreshments and socializing.

Performs scheduled to appear are: • Mike VanBlaricum, a 1968 Princeton High School graduate, has had a multi-faceted career as an electrical engineer, researcher, business executive and poet. Reflections on a Boomer’s Eye is a collection of his poetry and prose.

• Ron McCutchan was a founding board member of the Prairie Arts Council and is currently on the board of the Princeton Theatre Group. He has been active in Illinois Valley performing arts since his student days at Princeton High School. Along with Linda Ernst, he produced/directed/performed in several “Written Word/Spoken Word” performances at the Prairie Arts Center, including “Edna St. Vincent Millay: Speaker for the Human Spirit,” “The Poet and the Dream Girl” (Carl Sandburg and Lillian Steichen), and “In Flanders Fields” (poetry of World War I).

• Marydale Stewart is the author of a chapbook, Inheritance (Puddin’head Press, Chicago, 2008), and a full-length poetry collection, Let the Thunder In (Boxing Day Books, Princeton, IL, 2014).

• Joan Marella is a lifelong poet, known both for her own work as well as her encouragement of other poets.

• Jon McCutchan grew up in Princeton, and long ago, while delivering newspapers in the snowy winters of the late ‘70s, he found Robert Service’s The Cremation of Sam McGee on the front page of the News-Tribune.

• Kevin Shyne is a recent arrival, relocating to Princeton with his wife, Debi, after his retirement in 2013. Since then, his poetry has appeared in several print and online literary journals.

• Nedda Simon is a retired state and nationally certified addiction counselor. She founded and served as the first director of Princeton’s Freedom House. She also is the co-author of “Wired for Hope,” a collection of essays, poetry and musings that focus on the ways women respond to life crises.

• Pam Horwitz is an independent small business owner. She voices her passion for rural living and social justice through community advocacy, the arts and poetry, gardening and sharing good food. Co-author of Wired for Hope with Nedda Simon, she shares her poetry so that other may understand the personal and emotional hurdles of addictions.

• Jack Olson recently joined the Prairie Arts Council as gallery director and has been busy creating the PAC newsletter and maintaining the PrairieArts.org website.

Lori’s Walleye Run SPRING VALLEY — Lori’s 31st annual Walleye Run will take place Saturday, March 25, starting at 9 a.m. at Hall High School.
