‘Barn to Quilt’ creators were born to quilt Princeton is home to one of the top quilting stores in North America

BY BECKY KRAMER news@bcrnews.com Quilters all over the United States and even internationally now know what the Illinois Valley already knew – Princeton is home to one of the top quilting stores in North America.

Quilter’s Garden was featured in the magazine “Quilt Sampler” in September 2017 as one of the Top 10 quilt stores. Owners Beth Rosene and Carol Keller both agreed that this has been a great honor that will follow them forever.

Keller said, “The magazine is international. We have had a lot of visitors to our store and hits on our website since the magazine was published.”

According to the website www.allpeoplequilt. com, “For more than two decades, American Patchwork & Quilting magazine has featured 10 outstanding North American quilt shops and their exclusive projects in the highly sought-after newsstand publication Quilt Sampler magazine.”

Being featured is not an easy task. Stores begin the process by submitting an application to Quilt Sampler with detailed information and photographs. The staff at the magazine then have the daunting task of reading the hundreds of applications and choosing 10 stores to feature.

Once Beth and Carol were selected and notified in March 2017, they were asked to submit several original ideas for quilts they would design for the magazine, including the general design and colors.

Both ladies said the most difficult part of this process was keeping their excitement a secret!

The 10 stores would not be announced to the public until May at the International Quilt Market in St. Louis where shop owners

go to purchase goods and take classes. The women were sworn to secrecy until the announcement was made.

Several weeks after submitting their ideas to the magazine, they were told that the magazine chose their 52-inch square quilt titled “Barn to Quilt,” which features four barns, each with a unique barn quilt.

The women had three weeks to make the design, quilt it, write out the pattern, and send it in.

“We worked on it 24-7 for the three weeks,” Kellen said.

The ladies explained that one of the challenges was to make sure they used fabric that would be available for an extended period of time since they would spend the summer creating kits that quilters could buy to create their quilt.

Meanwhile, the Meredith Corporation, the parent company of Quilt Sampler, sent a crew to Quilter’s Garden to photograph the store. Since they would be featured in the Fall/ Winter issue, Beth and Carol needed to decorate the store for that season. They laughed and said it took all day to change the store.

Since they were still open during this time, yet they were still keeping their selection a secret, they told their customers that they were having the photographs taken for some advertising.

After the official announcement in May, the women returned to Princeton and had a party to announce their big news to their customers. It wasn’t until August, and only two weeks before the magazine was released, that Rosene and Keller found out that their store would be featured on the cover.

Quilter’s Garden, in operation since 2000, is a full-service quilt store that offers a large selection of patterns, fabric and goods needed to make quilts.

Both sewing machines and quilting machines can also be purchased in the store.

Classes and events are offered on a regular basis.

Kinzinger hosts academy nominees OTTAWA — Congressman Adam Kinzinger hosted a reception Nov. 27 for the students from Illinois’ 16th Congressional District who he nominated for their respective military academy applications. Following this event at the Ottawa District Office, Kinzinger released this statement: “It takes a special kind of person to voluntarily step up to serve, protect and defend. I’m incredibly proud to nominate these 16 incredible students from IL-16 this year as they take this step in advancing their education through servant leadership.

Trivia Night to support Ag in the Classroom PRINCETON — The Bureau County Farm Bureau Foundation will host its first-ever Trivia Night on Saturday, Jan. 13. The event will include food, fun and prize while supporting Bureau County Farm Bureau Foundation’s Ag in the Classroom (AITC). Everyone is welcome.

Doors open at 6 p.m. for dinner at the Elks Lodge in Princeton. Trivia will start promptly at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $200 per table (eight-person teams) and can be paid to the Farm Bureau Foundation. Tickets include dinner and trivia play. A cash bar will be available. To make reservations in advance, call the Bureau County Farm Bureau at 815-875-6468.

Bruins to host Spring Training PERU — The St. Bede Academy baseball program will present the Spring Training Baseball Clinic March 3 and March 10-11 for boys ages 6-14.

SBA head coach Bill Booker and his staff along with Bruins players will offer instruction on the fundamentals of the game, including hitting, fielding, pitching, catching and throwing.

Deer hunting SPRINGFIELD – Hunters harvested a preliminary total of 80,021 deer during the seven-day Illinois Firearm Deer Season that concluded Dec. 3. The 2017 preliminary harvest total compares to the final total of 79,559 deer harvested during the firearm season in 2016.

The preliminary harvest for the second segment of the firearm season on Nov. 30 through Dec. 3 was 28,656, compared with 24,977 during the second season in 2016. The preliminary harvest for the first segment of firearm season on Nov. 17-19 was 51,365 deer.

Deer hunting opportunities remain available in Illinois during the remainder of the 2017-18 season: • Late-Winter Antlerless-Only and CWD Deer Seasons (second segment) in select counties only on Jan. 12-14.
