While New Year’s Day may not be the deadliest day for people in vehicles, it is the day having the highest pedestrian deaths. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, half of those pedestrians who are killed are impaired by alcohol, with more than half of those fatalities having a very high-blood alcohols concentration. We at the Bureau County Republican want you to have a safe New Year’s celebration. If you do plan to consume alcohol, make sure you have a designated driver to get you home safe and soundly. One man — 24 deer Accident rate results in becoming a regular at the body shop By Dave Cook dcook@bcrnews.com
HENNEPIN — Anyone with a driver’s license has seen, narrowly missed or unfortunately hit a deer while traveling our area roads. One area man, however, has accumulated a larger than normal tally of deer collisions. Quentin Buffington, 44, of Hennepin has been a licensed driver since he was 16. In those 28 years, he’s hit or been hit by 24 deer. “I’ve hit 24, but I’ve successfully avoided far more, probably hundreds,” Buffington said. Saying he’s hit or been hit at all times of day and night, on all types of roads and in several different vehicles, there are no indications he could provide that would show a common link between the accidents. While the average cost of a deer collision is approximately $4,000, Buffington’s most damaging hit resulted in $8,000 of damage to the Lincoln he was driving at the time. “The most I’ve ever hit with one vehicle was five with my Subaru, including three in one year,” he said. His most recent accident occurred on Interstate 180 while driving his truck. The deer collided with the front fender, then the driver’s side door and finished the damage with a dent in the rear quarter panel. This was the third time the truck has been sent to the Fender Menders body shop in Peru. Owner Michael Supan said deer accidents are becoming more frequent and are occurring year around. Supan said, “There’s also a lot more of them happening in town; there was even one in downtown LaSalle and another in Oglesby.” Preventive measures have been attempted, but deer whistles caused a strange reaction, with Buffington saying, “I’ve tried them, but they made the deer run around in circles in the middle of the road.” He’s not a hunter, but Buffington said there have been years when he’s killed more deer than some of the hunters he knows, although he’s never been able to process any. When asked to provide advice on avoiding deer in the roadway he said, “Pay attention. New Route 89 bridge to be named Illinois Valley Veterans Memorial Bridge SPRINGFIELD — A new Route 89 bridge connecting Bureau and Putnam counties and spanning the Illinois River will be named The Illinois Valley Veterans Memorial Bridge, under a resolution (HJR 142) sponsored by Illinois State Sen. Sue Rezin (R-Peru). The Illinois Senate passed the resolution Dec. 1. “Illinois veterans deserve the utmost appreciation and respect,” Rezin said. “They dedicated their lives to protect our country, freedom, and others around the world. While we can never do enough for these brave men and women, naming this bridge is a small gesture of our gratitude for their selfless service and sacrifice. Now, future generations, every time they use this bridge, will remem-
ber our veterans and the sacrifices they endured.” Rezin credits the Spring Valley VFW for suggesting naming the new bridge in honor of Illinois veterans. “The Spring Valley VFW was instrumental in this idea,” Rezin said. “I want to thank them for bringing it to me and their continuous work in honoring and helping Illinois veterans every day. Also, thank you to all our veterans for their service and sacrifice. We are forever indebted to your commitment to everything you have done for our great nation.” The Illinois House passed HJR 142 earlier this year. This is a part-time position with an hourly rate of $12.00, approx. 20 hrs. per week. Will work Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with no lunch period. Will work all day on Fridays, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with a one-hour unpaid lunch period. Applicants must have a high school diploma (or GED equivalent), a valid Illinois drivers license, and have an understanding of Word and Excel software. Will greet customers, answer telephone, and perform basic functions in cash receipting, accounts payable, and utility billing. Must maintain accurate records and data entry.
