A dose of Christmas past

Danish program fills Sheffield’s historic church with traditional Christmas music and people

BY JIM DUNN Illinois Valley Scene SHEFFIELD — For an hour the afternoon of Dec. 17, citizens of 2017 stepped back in time for a nostalgic glimpse at what Christmas in 1880 might have been like.

The event was a Historic Danish Christmas Program, and the time-travel portal was the 137-year-old St. Peter’s Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church, built in Sheffield by Danish immigrants 11 years after they founded their congregation in 1869.

Outside the white wooden church with its tall steeple topped by a cross, worshipers stepped out of 21st century vehicles and walked onto a boardwalk that led to the church’s green front doors.

Once inside, however, people found themselves inhabiting a 19th century environment, one lit by oil-burning lamps, heated by two Victor wood-burning stoves, marked by a hint of wood smoke in the

air, and filled with rustic relics of the church’s past, including a large model sailing ship suspended from the church’s ceiling.

There was Christmas music, not only from Charlie Gebeck’s expert playing of the church’s old pump organ, but from guest vocalists, instrumentalists, and the congregation itself – nearly a dozen musical selections in all.

Dominating the scene were two large murals of Jesus Christ, one of Christ crucified in the front, and the other of the risen Christ at the rear.

But it was the infant Jesus that the congregation celebrated, singing “Oh, Come All Ye Faithful,” “The First Noel” and “Silent Night.”

It was the infant Jesus to whom Pastor Terry Lancaster encouraged people to open their hearts.

this holiday season.”

Before Gebeck played the final hymn, “Joy to the World,” he said, “I just want to personally thank everyone for coming. It’s great to see the church packed this year.”

After the service, Vicki Litherland of Sheffield said she enjoyed it very much.

“Oh, it absolutely puts you in the Christmas spirit. Uplifting, close to God and Jesus, and just touching,” she said.

Her grandson, Aiden Litherland, a third-grader at Bureau Valley, attended for the first time.

“What Grandma said — touching, Christmasy,” Aiden said when asked for his reaction.

It was also the first time to attend for Dean Ganschow of rural Walnut and Mark Pratt of Neponset.

“I thought it was great,” Ganschow said of the program. He attended with his daughter, Cindy.

“Good, real good,” Pratt added.

Paul Kautz of Princeton brought his trumpet to perform with the CUMC Brass Quartet.

“Well, it’s very nice,” Kautz said. “It’s very sea-

sonal, and it’s very traditional.

“When you’re in a structure that doesn’t have any electricity, that pot-bellied stove felt really, really good. It’s a good thing it wasn’t any colder out, but it was a very nice service.

Tyler Duckworth of Buda, who said he thought the service was “phenomenal,” played his guitar and sang “Christmas Shoes” (“I just really like that song, very beautifully written”) and “Mary, Did You Know.”

“I played here last year, and I’ll tell you what, we had twice as many people,” he said of this year’s turnout.

For Roger Nielsen of Sheffield, whose grandparents were part of the original congregation and whose father, Gilbert, was baptized there in 1907, having the church, with its original wood flooring, varnished pews and white plaster walls, still open for events such as Sunday’s is special.

“It’s really something to be proud of,” Nielsen said.

Linda Garcia closes the book on her career

Illinois Valley Scene GRANVILLE — While books are most closely associated with libraries, regular patrons know librarians are also important to a library visit.

Linda Garcia, the Granville librarian for seven years, recently retired. While children attending the library’s reading programs and other events will no doubt miss her warmth and friendliness, she said she’ll miss them just as much.

“I’m going to really miss my relationship with my patrons, and especially all the children I’ve come to know,” Garcia said.

“Our library has a strong children’s program, and some of these children I’ve known since they were coming here in strollers.”

Garcia said the children’s reading programs were an enjoyable way to satisfy her longtime desire to be a kindergarten teacher.

“I guess I’m just a frustrated teacher,” she said with a laugh.

Garcia’s husband retired last year, and she’ll be joining him as they plan to spend more time with their six grandchildren.

Since February 2017, the library has been offering library patrons access to an educational resource site called Lynda.com which provides more than 5,723 courses in business, technology and creative skills taught by industry experts. The site has recently added new courses that the library would like to recommend. “Creating a Positive and Healthy Work Environment” and “Developing Managers in Organizations” are valuable team development workshops, “Common Meeting Problems” and “Monday Productiv-

ity Pointers” offer suggestions for how to be more productive, and “Holding Yourself Accountable” and “Acting Decisively” will hone leadership skills. Cardholders can access links to these workshop videos and others by clicking on the LYNDA.com graphic in the Helpful Links section found toward the bottom of the right-hand column on the main page of the library website, www. princetonpl.org. Users will be prompted to enter their card number and password (the last four digits of their card number).

The license permits up to five users to access the videos at a time and allows for remote access. A number of companies, government agencies, and universities have offered Lynda.com for years. The library is proud to be able to offer another excellent resource to the many helpful databases available to our patrons.

SPRING VALLEY — The library in Spring Valley is collecting aluminum cans with the proceeds supporting the library and local scouts. Cans may be dropped off at the library during its hours of operation. A large box inside the west front door is available for drop off. Cans should be tied in a plastic bag. WYANET — The library provides computer classes to patrons on the first and third Thursdays of the month. The classes are taught by Ethan Sproul and James Smith.

BUDA — The library is open 1 to 5 p.m.

Monday; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday; 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday; closed Thursday; 1 to 5 p.m.

Friday; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday; and closed Sunday.

WALNUT — The library is asking patrons to donate empty ink cartridges and old cell phones. The library is able to recycle them for cash.

DEPUE — On the second Tuesday of every month, the library hosts blood pressure and blood sugar screenings for free. The screenings are administered by St. Margaret’s Health from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.

TISKILWA — On the first Wednesday of each month at 4:30 p.m., the library’s book club for adults meets.

Every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., the library hosts a yoga class, where participants enjoy camaraderie with others and are challenged mentally and physically. Cost is $5 per person.

BUREAU — The Leepertown Township Public Library is open from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; from 5 to 7 p.m.

Thursday; and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Holiday hoopla There will be a Christmas basketball tournament coming to a gym near you. Here’s a run down: At St. Bede: The Lady Bruins Christmas Classic draws locals Princeton, LaMoille-Ohio and the host Lady Bruins.

State-ranked Eureka is the top seed. Teams in order of seeds are Eureka, Fieldcrest, Kewanee, Seneca, Mendota, Princeton, St. Bede and LaMoille-Ohio. The tournament runs through Friday, Dec. 29. Eureka beat Kewanee for the last two championships.

At Erie: Both the Bureau Valley boys and girls teams will play in the Warkins Memorial Classic at Erie High School which runs through Saturday, Dec. 30. It is a pool-play format.

At Princeville: DePue is the defending champion and No. 1 seed at the Princeville Holiday Tournament, which runs through Thursday, Dec. 28.

At Amboy: The Hall Lady Devils make their debut at the Amboy Girls Holiday Tournament which runs through Dec. 29. Putnam County also plays there.

At Lanark: The LaMoille-Ohio Lions play at the Eastland Holiday Tournament in Lanark, a pool-play format which concludes Dec. 30.

At Marseilles: The St. Bede Bruins have returned to the Marseilles Holiday Tournament, joining neighbors Hall and Putnam County. Hall is the No. 4 seed behind Indian Creek, Marquette and Seneca.

by NCAA head coaches Steve Cook (Coe College) and Nathan Rolling (Simpson College). The clinic will offer small-group instruction that promotes the development of well-rounded practices for hitting pitching and catching and fielding.

Cost of the clinic is $20 per player with checks made payable to Bureau Valley baseball.

All proceeds will go to the BVHS baseball program.
