The live nativity scene had three sections, where people could view the Christmas story by walking past or driving by in the warm comfort of their vehicles. The Walnut Community Bible Church sponsored the event. Earlier in the month, the Sheffield United Methodist Church also held its live nativity in front of the church. With snow flying, the Christmas story came alive for those who braved the weather to see the event. Living with Grace

Tame deer offers chance for gentle interaction By Dave Cook dcook@bcrnews.com

PRINCETON — While a common site, deer aren’t known for being approachable. The only times you can get close is unfortunately after either hitting them with a vehicle or by successfully hunting them. There is one, however, who is quite friendly. Grace is owned by Deb Moreland of rural Princeton and is part of the mobile menagerie known as the Furry Friends Petting Zoo. For 18 years Furry Friends has travelled throughout the area and allowed people to interact with animals including Grace, a white skunk named Peaches, a Patagonian Cavy, dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, cockatiels, chickens, a chinchilla and many more. Moreland has visited places from anywhere between the Quad Cities and Joliet and from Rockford to Bloomington. During the week she regularly visits nursing homes. “For that I usually take the soft, cuddly things they can hold and enjoy. Going to the nursing homes is, to me, the most rewarding part of the whole thing because it just lights them

up,” Moreland said. She’s often told by staff how differently people react during her visits. People who rarely talk, socialize or even smile will eagerly participating in visiting with animals. She also is a common friend at several schools, libraries, town celebrations and other special events including several at Starved Rock State Park. Depending on the location, the zoo’s lineup varies, but Grace is the star of the show, especially during the holiday season. In Granville, where she’s a regular part of the village Christmas celebration, Grace is known among children as a close friend of Santa Claus. Moreland had previously done factory work but didn’t enjoy it. She said the search began for something “to make it worth getting out of bed in the morning.” Once she saw a television program about a children’s hospital being visited by animals, she knew which direction she wanted to take. A life-long animal lover, she began to contact area nursing homes and received enough positive feedback she began scheduling visits with her big

dog, little dog, a cockatiel, a cat, a rabbit and a bearded dragon. “Just walking in I began to see smiles and hands reaching out,” she said. As she began to get requests to include different animals, the zoo grew through purchases and adoptions. “Sometimes people get animals and don’t realize how much care is involved, so I’ve taken in quite a few that way,” Moreland said. After speaking with the owner of an area game farm and hearing you could bottle feed a fawn and have it remain gentle and tame, she decided to try it. She purchased from him the deer that would become known as Grace and brought her home at two days old, weighing only four pounds. “She was all legs and covered in spots, just the cutest little thing and so sweet.” Moreland said. There are several photos of the young, spotted fawn, who is now 10 years-old, being held in the arms of family members or curled up in the grass in the backyard. She was bottle-fed every four hours with 2 percent cow’s milk. “He was right, she’s a big baby. It’s worked out really

well, she’s a good girl. She followed my dogs everywhere and still loves to play with them,” Moreland said. At 6 weeks old Grace began joining the zoo and was an immediate hit. She travels by van and jumps right in once Moreland opens the doors. Moreland said, “Everybody, kids and adults, love her and are thrilled to see her. When she was young she could be a little rambunctious, but as she’s gotten older, she’s gotten better every year, and now she’s so gentle and loving.” Grace is registered with the Department of Natural Resources and while capable of jumping a fence, Moreland said she stays close to home and in her yard. She has a small, warm barn available to her, but according to Moreland, she only goes inside in the worst of winter. The 12 scams of Christmas CHICAGO – There are scams for all seasons including Christmas; yes, Virginia … there are people who target consumers with holiday-themed scams. This is a joyous time of the year, but when desperation sets in, shoppers can easily mistake a phony e-card or fake charity for the real thing. “When consumers let their guard down, they become the perfect target for fly-bynight Internet merchants, phishers and charitable imposters,” says Steve J. Bernas, president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau serving Chicago and Northern Illinois “Each year at Christmas, consumers lose millions of dollars to scam artist who rip them off.” Here’s the scammer’s naughty list for 2016: • Secret Sister Exchange: A social media scam that claims if you buy a $10 gift and send it to a “secret sister,” you will receive anywhere from six to 36 in return. This is a variation on “pyramid schemes,” and it’s illegal. • Help Scams: Calls to unsuspecting relatives or friends from imposters who claim to be a grandchild, niece, nephew or friend, who is traveling, and they need emergency financial help to cover medical or legal expenses. • Seasonal Travel Scams: Whether it’s a promise of a free or discounted trip, phony rental listings, or con men telling timeshare sellers they’ve got a buyer lined up, scammers are working to rip you off. Check out any offers of great travel deals. • Point of sale Malware: Is malicious software expressly written to steal customer payment data -- especially credit card data -- from retail checkout systems. Check your credit card statements to make sure you don’t have unwanted charges as a result of a point-of-sale breach of your credit security. • Phony Charities: ‘Tis the season to donate, but be wary of fake charities. Do your research and double check the site URL. Check out charities at http://ask.bbb.org/.

• Fake Coupons: Avoid the unwanted gift of malware and always verify that e-cards or coupons are from someone you know and are from a trustworthy site. • Fake Shipping Notifications: Think twice before clicking links in shipping notification emails. Always verify the shipping company before giving out your personal information. • ATM Skimmers: The typical ATM skimmer is a device smaller than a deck of cards that fits over the existing card reader. It is essentially a malicious card reader that grabs the data off the card’s magnetic stripe, so that the thief can harvest data from every person that swipes their cards. • Fake Romance: Scammers create fake online profiles using photos of other people — even stolen pictures of real military personnel. They profess their love quickly. And they tug at your heartstrings with made-up stories about how they need money — for emergencies, hospital bills, or travel. • Fake Apps/phony e-tailers: Today, smartphones act not only as a phone but also a credit card, house key, camera and more. Malware can access your device via apps. Do your research and stick to official app stores when downloading. • Free Gift Cards: Pop-up ads or emails offering free gift cards are often just a ploy to get your personal information that can later be used for identity theft. • Phishing Emails: Be wary of unexpected deals or product promotions from stores or sellers you have never dealt with. There will be people trying to take advantage of buyers where the victim could be subject to phishing tactics or just stolen money for an order that will never come in. Grace From Page 1 curled up next to the house. “I used to think they were fragile, but they’re actually quite strong and powerful; they’re so well equipped to survive,” Moreland said. “Their hair is incredible for the winter” She said she’s been told by hunters a typical life span of a wild deer in this area is six to nine years because their soft teeth get worn down from eating grain. She also said she’s spoken to another owner of a

tame deer, and his is 19 years old because its teeth remain healthy because it eats softer food more closely resembling a deer’s natural diet. “She eats a soft, pelleted food, and she also loves all kinds of fruits and vegetables. She’ll eat melons, zucchini, tomatoes, carrots, kale, spinach, apples, grapes, bananas, peaches and anything else I get from people’s gardens,” she said. No matter where she visits with Grace, people’s reactions are the same. “Everyone always says how much they love just being able to be close to her and touch her,” Moreland said.
