It won’t be long now ...

Santa Claus and many of his helpers have been making appearances throughout the county, listening to children’s wishes, offering treats and answering lots of questions. His list of good boys and girls in the area is long, which means he’ll be making plenty of stops in our neck of the woods.

With his famous “Ho, Ho, Ho,” echoing throughout our land, Santa will soon be heading back to the North Pole to ready his sleigh, his giant bag of toys, his team of reindeer and his elves for his flight on Christmas Eve, where he visits those who believe.

Also known throughout the world, the typical name of Santa Claus in the United States translates to Saint Nicholas, Saint Nick, Father Christmas, Kris Kringle or Santy in other cultures and countries. The modern figure of Santa is derived from the Dutch figure of Sinterklaas, whose name is a dialectal pronunciation of Saint Nicholas, the historical Greek bishop and gift-giver of Myra.

The Santa Claus we’ve come to know and love is generally depicted as a portly, joyous, white-bearded man — sometimes with spectacles — wearing a red coat with white collar and cuffs, white-cuffed red trousers, and black leather belt and boots. He is known to carry a bag full of gifts for children. This image became popular in the United States and Canada in the 19th Century due to the significant influence of the 1823 poem “A Visit From St. Nicholas” and of caricaturist and political cartoonist Thomas Nast.

So it won’t be long ... Santa Claus will be coming to town.

In good ‘Kompany’ Princeton native brings cool scene, calm demeanor and collection of craft beers to Main Street

PRINCETON — When you come into Kenny Kramer’s new business, the only prerequisites are that you furnish your surroundings with smooth maneuvers, you must wear clothes, and you have to have a craving for craftiness.

After all, when you walk through the door of this establishment, you’re on “Kompany” time.

Kramer grew up in a business family, as his parents started Kramer’s Garage Doors in 1983, and one of his mom’s many talents developed into Kramer’s Kitchen a few years back. He said friends and colleagues teased him about taking over the establishment where Fitzgerald’s formerly resided, but he needed to be physically, mentally and financially prepared for the venture.

The jury is still out on whether he accomplished that task by opening the Kompany, but sometimes you just have to jump and grow wings on your way down.

“I knew the town needed something a little different to get interested in instead of a place you come drink your sorrows away,” Kramer said, mentioning his goal was to add to the uniqueness Fitzgerald’s had offered with something that “wowed your mind.”

“I sell beer and liquor, but you need something else. You need the service, of course, and the right crew with a quality product and atmosphere.”

Kramer replaced the Tuscany-wine theme with distinctive and abstract decor acquired from his many travels through the cultural landscape.

He plastered his walls with a top hat and mustache collage borrowed from strongmen of the early 1900s, and has a stage area available where bluegrass roots can grow beside cowboy boots and the thundering riffs of rock n’ roll.

Princeton native Kenny Kramer certainly doesn’t lack enthusiasm as he ventures into the landscape of business ownership. His bar, the Kompany, welcomes all patrons, so long as they are wearing a smile. friendly grin, placing an invitation for a peaceful drink on the laborer’s table and in the businessman’s binder. “We have around 50 different craft beers here, in bottle and on draft, so if people want to expand their horizon, we can steer them in the right direction.”

With an associate’s degree in construction design and management from Parkland Community College, Kramer relies on the many business classes he studied to promote the Kompany, and turned the basement into the Kompany Down Under, where patrons can throw business parties, weddings, baby showers and more.

He mentioned business has been outstanding, and Kramer thanked all the people who helped with effort or advice, as the path toward expansion and improvement seems to grow more familiar every day.

“It hasn’t really set in yet that I own this place, but it’s cool to be here and see people come in and enjoy,” he said.

The Kompany, located at 432 S. Main St., is open Tuesday through Thursday from 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. and Friday and Saturday from 3 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Research on football and Bloody Mary Sundays is currently underway, with trial runs open to the public.

Johnny Cash tribute at Circa ‘21 Playhouse

A bluegrass, gospel and country music jam will be from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, Dec. 18, at the First Lutheran Church at 116 N. Pleasant St. in Princeton. Just for Kix will present “It’s a Marshmallow World in the Winter” on Saturday, Dec. 19, in Princeton High School’s Prouty Gym. Admission is $7 for adults and $4 for students, available at the door. Doors will open at 5 p.m., with the show starting at 5:30 p.m.

The Princeton Community Band and the Bureau County Chorus will join to perform a Christmas concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 20. The program, titled “Holiday Harmony,” will include some holiday favorites as well as a variety of musical genres. The concert will held in the Sally Skinner Council Auditorium at Princeton High School. There is no cost for the concert but attendees will have an opportunity to show their appreciation to the musical organizations by giving a monetary donation. The members of both the band and the chorus participate on a volunteer basis. The community is invited to attend.

The First United Methodist Church in Princeton has announced upcoming activities: • The public is invited to a “Our Table” dinner at 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 21. The meal will be followed at 6 p.m. by a “Blue Christmas” worship service in the sanctuary.

• There will be two worship services on Thursday, Dec. 24. At 4 p.m., there will be a family friendly service of Los Posadas. The public is invited to join as the children help Mary and Joseph search for a place to stay. At 11 p.m., there will be the traditional worship of Nine Lessons and Carols.

Each service will include a traditional candlelighting portion of the worship as they celebrate Christ’s birth.

ROCK ISLAND — Circa ‘21 Dinner Playhouse in Rock Island announced the return of the popular concert “Man in Black: The Music of Johnny Cash” on Jan. 2. Only one performance is scheduled. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the concert will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.

Hegeler Carus Mansion announces cast for ‘Holiday Vignettes’ LASALLE — The Hegeler Carus Mansion has announced the cast for its annual Christmas-themed play, “Holiday Vignettes.” The show combines a house tour with a play, giving visitors a glimpse into a Victorian holiday. The plays will be held on Friday, Dec. 18, and Saturday, Dec. 19. Event-goers will be assigned a time when they make their reservation.

“This year’s premise is that the year is 1886.

It is the annual Hegeler Christmas party. In just a few short hours this house will be filled with gowns and tuxes worn by only the most noteworthy of guests, for the Hegeler holiday hoopla is the hottest ticket in town,” said Tricia Kelly, tour director at the Hegeler Carus Mansion. “While final party preparations are being made, one of the trains came into the station earlier than expected. The family’s carriage drivers, not knowing what to do, simply brought them (our show attendees) to the mansion.”

In the meantime, scandal has rocked the staff.

It has been discovered that Elizabeth, a young scullery maid, has run off with Francois, a footman who is trying to pass himself off to the Hegeler family as an able French tutor. It is becoming obvious to the staff he’s a fraud. Elizabeth, however, is a sweet girl of virtue.

In order to save her job and reputation (should she return soon), and also to not alarm the Hegelers on the night of this

important event, the staff are attempting to keep the secret elopement from the family. It isn’t easy, since various family members are beginning to notice that they haven’t seen her about … and comedy ensues.

“This theatrical tour features a great local cast, many of whom have been seen on stage at IVCC, Stage 212, Engle Lane and local high schools,” said Kelly Klobucher, executive director of the Hegeler Carus Foundation.

The Hegeler Carus Mansion is owned by the Hegeler Carus Foundation which operates the mansion as a house museum and event venue. The foundation hosts more than 100 events annually which help to fund the preservation of the historic buildings on the museum campus. with caramel mixture. Sprinkle remaining crumbly mixture over top. Bake until golden brown, 20 to 25 minutes. Cool 30 minutes. Loosen edges from sides of pan; cool completely. Cut into bars.

If you haven’t already started (or completed) your holiday baking, you might like to try one or more of these Christmas cookie recipes. Besides a treat for Santa, cookies go hand-in-hand with Christmas. Whether you prefer your traditional recipes or want to try something new, I haven’t found many cookies I don’t like.

Hope you’ll enjoy these.

Chocolate Thumbprint Cookies 1/2 cup butter, softened 2/3 cup sugar 1 egg, separated 2 tablespoons milk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/3 cup baking cocoa 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 cup finely chopped walnuts Filling 1/2 cup powdered sugar 1 tablespoon butter, softened 2 teaspoons milk 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract 26 Hershey kisses In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg yolk, milk and vanilla. Combine the flour, cocoa and salt; gradually add to creamed mixture and mix well. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour or until or until the dough is easy to handle.

In a small bowl, whisk egg white until foamy. Shape dough into 1-inch balls; dip in egg white, then roll in nuts. Place on greased baking sheets. Using a wooden spoon handle, make an indentation in center of each cookie. Bake at 350° for 10-12 minutes or until center is set.

For filling, combine the powdered sugar, butter, milk and vanilla; stir until smooth. Spoon or pipe 1/4 teaspoon into each warm cookie; gently press a chocolate kiss in the center. Carefully remove from pans to wire racks to cool. This recipe makes two dozen.

The Best Brownies Ever 8 ounces unsweetened chocolate 1 1/2 cups butter 6 large eggs 3 cups sugar 1 1/2 cups flour 1 tablespoon vanilla 1 cup chopped walnuts 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips Preheat oven to 350°. Melt chocolate and butter over hot water or in microwave on medium heat for four minutes; remove and stir well. Let cool. Beat the eggs until lemon colored. Gradually add sugar, beating until thick, about three minutes. Stir in chocolate. Fold in flour, vanilla, nuts and chocolate chips. Pour into two greased and floured 8-inch square pans. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes.

Do not overbake; they should be very moist in the center. When cool, cut into squares. These brownies freeze well.

Mini Cinnamon Roll Cookies 1 cup butter, softened 1 3/4 cups sugar, divided 3 large egg yolks 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon honey, divided 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 1/2 cups flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon In a large bowl, cream butter and 1 1/4 cups sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg yolks, 1 tablespoon honey and vanilla. Combine the flour, baking powder, salt and cream of tartar and gradually add to creamed mixture. Mix well.

Shape a heaping tablespoonful of

dough into a 6-inch log. In a shallow bowl, combine cinnamon and remaining sugar; roll log in cinnamon-sugar.

Loosely coil log into a spiral shape; place on a greased baking sheet. Repeat, placing cookies 1 inch apart. Sprinkle with remaining cinnamon-sugar.

Bake at 350° for 8-10 minutes or until set. Remove to wire racks to cool completely. In a small bowl, melt baking chocolate with remaining honey; stir until smooth. Drizzle over cookies. Let stand until set. Store in an airtight container.

This recipe makes about 30 cookies.

White Chocolate Cranberry Cookies

Chocolate Peanut Butter Bars 1 cup creamy peanut butter 6 tablespoons butter, softened 1 1/4 cups sugar 3 eggs 1 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 cup flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 cups chocolate chips Preheat oven to 350°. In large mixing bowl, beat peanut butter and butter until smooth, about one minute. Add sugar, eggs and vanilla, and beat until creamy.

Blend in flour and salt. Stir in 1 cup of the chocolate chips.

Spread into ungreased 13-by-9-inch baking pan. Bake 25-30 minutes, or until edges begin to brown. Immediately sprinkle remaining morsels over cookie layer. Let stand five minutes until morsels become shiny and soft. Spread the rest of the chocolate chips evenly over top. Cool completely.

Beat in egg and vanilla. Combine the flour, salt and baking soda; gradually add to butter mixture and mix well. Stir in cranberries and chips.

Drop by heaping tablespoonfuls 2 inches apart onto baking sheets coated with cooking spray or use parchment paper. Bake at 375° for 8-10 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool for 1 minute before removing from cookie sheet. This makes about two dozen cookies.

Chocolate Snowball Cookies 3/4 cup butter, softened 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 large egg 2 teaspoons vanilla 2 cups flour 1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts 1 cup (6 ounces) chocolate chips Powdered sugar Preheat oven to 350°. In a large bowl, cream butter, sugar and salt until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla. Gradually beat in flour.

Stir in pecans and chocolate chips.

Shape dough into 1-inch balls and place 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheets. Bake 15-20 minutes or until set and bottoms are lightly browned. Cool on pans two minutes.

Roll warm cookies in powdered sugar.

Cool completely on wire racks. If desired, re-roll cookies in powdered sugar. This recipe makes about four dozen.

Caramel Candy Bars 1 14-ounce package caramel candies, unwrapped 1/3 cup milk 2 cups flour 2 cups quick-cooking or regular oats 1 1/2 cups packed brown sugar 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 large egg 1 cup margarine or butter, softened 1 6-ounce package semisweet chocolate chips 1 cup chopped walnuts or dry roasted peanuts Preheat oven to 350°. Grease a 13-by-9by-2-inch baking pan. Heat candies and milk in 2-quart saucepan over low heat, stirring frequently until smooth; remove from heat. Mix flour, oats, brown sugar, baking soda, salt and egg in large bowl.

Stir in margarine with fork until mixture is crumbly. Press half of the crumbly mixture in pan. Bake 10 minutes. Sprinkle with chocolate chips and walnuts; drizzle

Hall to host hitting clinic SPRING VALLEY — The Hall Red Devils will hold a hitting clinic for both baseball and softball players with former pro player and internationally known hitting instructor, Mark Doran.

The baseball portion of the clinic will be Sunday, Jan. 17, 2016, and the softball portion will be Sunday, Jan. 24. For more information, check the Hall High School athletic website and click on the clinic tab.

Play with the Pros

PEKIN — The Christian Center’s Play with the Pros Baseball Clinic on Saturday, Dec. 19, at the Avanti’s Dome in Pekin will include instruction from World Series champ Ben Zobrist, now of the Chicago Cubs, and Zach McAllister of the Cleveland Indians.

Zobrist, who is from Eureka, and McAllister (Chillicothe) are scheduled to be joined by Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Pat Venditte, and area minor league players.

Cost is $110, which includes a shirt, hat, goodie bag and photo with the pros. The clinic runs from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for ages 8-10, and from 1 to 5:30 p.m. for ages 11-14.

There are 60 spots in season.

Baseball clinic

SOUTH HOLLAND – South Suburban College head baseball coach Steve Ruzich will be directing a two-day Catching Camp on Wednesday, Dec. 30, and Thursday, Dec. 31, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This clinic will provide catching instruction in the areas of blocking, calling a game, pick offs, pop throwing times, stance and footwork, drills for practice, pop ups, handling pitchers, and conditioning. In addition to Ruzich’s instruction, Bulldog baseball players will be on hand to help and develop skills. The players’ enthusiasm and expertise always adds to the camp’s success. The Catching Camp is open to boys ages 8-18. All players should bring their glove and gear. All participants should wear baseball or sweat pants and gym shoes, and boys must wear cups.

Ruzich has directed youth camps for the past 29 years and has taught baseball skills at many other baseball camps throughout the state. He was an All-American catcher at the College of St. Francis. He graduated in 1985 and was drafted by the Chicago White Sox. Coach Ruzich had a short stint as a pro catcher before coming to SSC as head baseball coach in 1987, where he has compiled a winning record of 1,048-607.

The cost of the Catching Camp is $100, and checks should be made payable to SSC Bulldog Baseball. Enrollment is limited, so early registration is suggested. South Suburban College is located at 15800 S. State St., South Holland. For more information, contact Coach Ruzich at 708-225-5843.

I-70 Baseball Coaches Clinic GREENVILLE — Legendary Atlanta Braves pitching coach Leo Mazzone, Jack Leggett (Clemson), Pat McMahon (N.Y. Yankees) and Rick Eckstein (University of Kentucky) will be the speakers for the 13th annual I-70 Baseball Coaches Clinic Sunday, Jan. 17, 2016, and Monay, Jan. 17 at Greenville High School Auditorium in Greenville.

Mazzone will speak on Sunday night and his topics include “My Pitching Philosophy,” “Leading a Staff,” “Mechanics of a Healthy Pitcher” and “Proper Ways to Teach Different Pitches.”

Leggett, McMahon and Eckstein will all speak on Monday (Martin Luther King Day). Leggett, an ABCA Hall of Famer, will speak on “Fundamentals and Drills to Improve Infielders” and “Moving Your Team to the Next Level.” McMahon, formerly the head coach at Mississippi State and University of Florida, will speak on “Baserunners Rules at Each Base,” “Developing a Catcher to Call a Game,” “Strategy and Teaching Players to Take Charge,” and “When and Why to Use the Short Game.” Eckstein, the former hitting coach of the Washington Nationals, will cover “Hitting Development” and “Coaching Today’s Player.”

The clinic runs Sunday night from 6 to 8:30 p.m. followed by a coaches social at Greenville Country Club. Monday’s clinic format runs from 9 a.m. until 3:45 p.m. Registration for the clinic will begin an hour earlier than starting time.

Clinic preregistration fees are $50 per coach, add another $10 for registering at the door. Staff rates (4-6 coaches from same coaching staff) are $175 pre-registered and $220 at the door. The clinic is a fundraiser for the Greenville High School Comets baseball program. Last year’s clinic attracted 320 baseball coaches from six different states.
