This year, the event will take place at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17, at the church, where people can step back in time with the beautiful sounds of the pump organ played by Charlie Gebeck, lighting from oil lanterns, and warmth from pot-bellied wood-burning stoves.

Special performances will be given by Sue Bromme Winger, Vince Gelsomino, Tyler Duckworth and Dylan Benavidez.

A social hour after the program will take place at the United Methodist Church with music by Jack Ness.

Princeton Community Band and Bureau County Chorus will present holiday concert on Dec. 17 PRINCETON — The Princeton Community Band and the Bureau County Chorus will collaborate on a holiday-themed concert titled “Sounds of the Season.” The performance will take place at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17, in Princeton High School’s Sally Skinner Council Auditorium.

This is the third year that these organizations have joined forces

on a holiday concert.

Among the songs that the Bureau County Chorus will sing are “The Dreidel Song,” “Mary, Did You Know?,” “Veni, Veni, Emmanuel” (sung in Latin), “Silent Night” and “The Colors of Christmas.” The chorus is directed by Emily Stover, music teacher and junior high choir director for Princeton Elementary Schools.

As well as playing holiday standards, the Princeton Community Band’s performance will include some more unusual tunes, such as “African Holy Night,” “The Thirteen Days of Christmas” and “The Name’s Claus ... Santa Claus.”

The band is conducted by Brandon Stover, director of bands for Princeton Elementary Schools.

Both the Princeton Community Band and the Bureau County Chorus are all-volunteer organizations. Admission to the concert is free, but donations will be gratefully accepted. This program is supported by a grant from OmniArts.

PRINCETON — The adult choir of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Princeton will present a variety of Christmas music at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17, in the church sanctuary.

In addition to choir anthems, there will be special music by a men’s quartet, a vocal solo, and a piano solo and duet.

Congregational Christmas carols will be sung accompanied by an instrumental group.

The Evangelical Covenant Church is located at 24 N. Main Street and is accessible to all.

Refreshment will be served after the program.

Princeton Bible Church choir plans a Celtic Christmas

IVCH variety show auditions announced PERU — Illinois Valley residents who can sing, dance, juggle, play an instrument or otherwise entertain and want to perform on stage in front of an appreciative audience for a good cause are invited to try out for the 2018 Illinois Valley Community Hospital variety show.

Auditions are scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Saturday, Jan. 13, in the Dr. Mary Weeg Cultural Centre at Illinois Valley Community College in Oglesby. Individuals and groups who would like to perform in the show can reserve an audition time by calling the IVCH Community Outreach office at 815-780-4618.

“We’re announcing the date for auditions now so people who want

to perform in the show have time to think about what they want to do and rehearse,” said Dawn Moutray, the show’s director.

An IVCH Foundation fundraiser to help the hospital purchase a new MRI unit, the show will be staged Saturday, March 10, in Matthiessen Auditorium at LaSalle-Peru High School.

The Princeton Bible Church Choir, under the direction of Marty Kiser, will present the musical “Season of Joy: A Celtic Christmas Celebration” Sunday, Dec. 17, at 10:15 a.m. and again at 7 p.m. in the Princeton Bible Church auditorium. The 25-voice choir will sing Irish-flavored Christmas songs, telling the story of Christ’s birth, assisted by a cast portraying an Irish family: Dale Cook, Maria Hartsough, Thomas Cook and Matthew Cook. The public is invited to join in this unique Christmas celebration with a wee bit of Irish fun.

PRINCETON — The Princeton Public Library will host a life-sized Candy Land Reading Night at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19, for children in pre-K through fourth grade.

The evening will start out with stories and

music and then there will be time to meet Santa Claus and have a picture taken with him.

The evening will continue with a beaded candy cane craft and then the library’s famous life-sized Candy Land game.

The popular children’s game will be brought to life by costume characters.

Advanced sign-up is not required this year, just bring your holiday cheer and celebrate the season at the library.

IVCC Adult Education classes offered OGLESBY — The Adult Education program at Illinois Valley Community College will offer free Adult Basic Education (ABE), High School Equivalency (HSE) traditional and online preparation classes as well as English Language Acquisition (ELA) and Citizenship classes beginning Jan. 16 and 17.

In addition to being able to come into the Princeton Public Library to use its computers or access its free wireless connection, patrons can also check out one of the library’s five new Hotspot Wi-Fi devices to take home.

The borrower must be a library card holder, 18 or older, and in good standing with the library. First-time users must sign an acknowledgement form at the circulation desk prior to checkout. The device can only be checked out for seven days, and will not be renewable.

When checking out the Hotspot, the borrower will receive the device, a power cord, an instruction manual, and a carrying case. All items must be returned at the same time to the front desk during business hours in order to avoid a late fee. They cannot be returned using the drop box locations.

The overdue fine is $1 per day. Failure to return the Hotspot and accessories within four weeks after the original due date will result in a charge to the cardholder’s account of $100 with a $15 additional charge for the adapter. Hand the case and its contents directly to a library staff member. The user assumes responsibility for the cost of repair or replacement in the event that Wi-Fi Hotspot or its accessories are lost, stolen or damaged.

PRINCETON — The plastic recycling drive earlier this year was such a great success, the Princeton Public Library is doing it again.

The recycling program offered by Trex will award the library with a free Trex bench if they collect 500 pounds of plastic by Feb. 28, 2018. Trex benches are outdoor furniture made from recycled plastic.

To help them with the challenge, patrons may bring any of the following items to the library and deposit them in the receptacle found in the foyer area: grocery bags, bead bags, case overwrap, dry cleaning bags, newspaper sleeves, ice bags, wood pellet bags, Ziplock and other reclosable bags, produce bags, bubble wrap, salt bags and cereal bags.

All plastic must be clean, dry and free of food residue. A collection box for the plastic has been set up in the entryway of the library.

Totals are reported on a monthly basis and dropped off at Hy-Vee in Peru.

On Friday, Dec. 15, at 4 p.m., there will be a piano interlude of holiday music.

On Friday, Dec. 16, at 12:30 p.m., there will be a wellness workshop.

Colmone Classic SPRING VALLEY — The 2017 Colmone Classic continues at Hall High School through Saturday, Dec. 16.

The annual pre-Holiday Hoopla expanded from eight teams to 12 this year, spread out over an eight-day period rather than six. Games will be played in both the main and auxiliary gyms.

Newcomers to the field include locals Bureau Valley, Princeton and St. Bede along with Wilmington.

There is also a sophomore tournament being played out at the same time.

Deer hunting SPRINGFIELD – Hunters harvested a preliminary total of 80,021 deer during the seven-day Illinois Firearm Deer Season that concluded on Sunday, Dec. 3. The 2017 preliminary harvest total compares to the final total of 79,559 deer harvested during the firearm season

in 2016.

The preliminary harvest for the second segment of the firearm season on Nov. 30 through Dec. 3 was 28,656, compared with 24,977 during the second season in 2016. The preliminary harvest for the first segment of firearm season on Nov. 17-19 was 51,365 deer.

Deer hunting opportunities remain available in Illinois during the remainder of the 2017-18 season: • Late-Winter Antlerless-Only and CWD Deer Seasons (first segment) in select counties only on Dec. 28-31.

may use crossbows during archery hunting seasons. Gov. Bruce Rauner signed into law House Bill 2893, which amended the Illinois Wildlife Code to repeal restrictions on the use of crossbows during archery hunting seasons in Illinois.

Illinois law previously allowed the use of crossbows for archery hunting by persons age 62 or older, and those persons with disabilities who qualified for a crossbow permit issued by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR).

In addition, the previous law allowed certain youth hunters to use crossbows, and allowed all archery hunters to use crossbows beginning the Monday after the second firearm deer season.
