Celebrate Christmas Ladd-style The village of Ladd welcomes one and all to join in the 2015 Ladd Christmas Walk, “There’s Snow Place Like Ladd,” from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12. Businesses and organizations are offering many family-oriented activities intended to spread some holiday cheer.

A highlight is the Snowman Parade, beginning at 5 p.m. on North Main Street.

All snowmen are welcome to participate.

The parade is open to all kinds of entries — walkers, vehicles and floats, or individuals.

The only requirement is that the entry be lighted and include a snowman as part of the entry. Participants should line up at the Ladd Construction parking lot at 4:45 p.m.

Activities before and after the parade include wagon rides, children’s’ crafts and activities, plus pictures with Santa. Grace, the white-tailed deer, storyteller Tricia Kelly, musicians and carolers, including the United Methodist Church bell ringers, the Hall High School and Ladd Grade School choir, as well as guitarist Kevin Kramer will entertain. The Ladd Public Library will host an old-fashioned Christmas cookie bake sale.

Master Gardeners/Naturalists make plans for 2016 University of Illinois Extension’s Master Gardener and Master Naturalist volunteers from Bureau, LaSalle, Marshall and Putnam counties convened at Illinois Valley Community College on Oct. 13 to discuss community service project work, continuing education opportunities and to plan special event programs for spring 2016.

“We have a very knowledgeable and dedicated group of volunteers who are experts in their field. Both the Master Gardeners and Master Naturalists have more than 60 hours of in-depth training and must meet annual continuing education requirements to maintain their status,” said Jill Guynn, Extension county director.

“These volunteers work throughout the year in communities across Extension’s four-county service area meeting a variety of local needs including teaching both youth and adults how to grow and utilize fresh, healthy foods, donating vegetables and produce to local food pantries, providing public presentations to community groups and school classrooms, working on city beautification projects, planting trees, helping our public lands to control invasive species, teaching youth groups about protecting our environment and much more. All information is unbiased and research-based and for public benefit. Approved projects are determined locally, based on needs.”

Information from the state Master Gardener Program coordinator and the state Master Naturalist Program coordinator was shared by Guynn covering reporting of community service hours, continuing education, required training and annual agreement forms. Bonnie Burkman covered fund information, insurance coverage and grant opportunities for youth programs. Barb Krug reviewed continuing education at local and state programs and provided a demonstration of how to enter hours into the online system.

Barb Dahlbach, Marshall-Putnam Master Gardener, presented information to the group of 50 on the Healthy Gardening Project she initiated and expanded with the help of 10 other Master Gardeners and Master Naturalists to reach and serve 469 families in Marshall and Putnam counties in 2015.

Dahlbach said, “Give a man a vegetable and feed him for a day; teach a man to garden and feed him for life.”

This group was selected by the Illinois Master Gardener Program for the State Teamwork Award at the 2015 Illinois Master Gardener Conference in O’Fallon in September.

Deb Mysker, who is both a Master Gardener and a Master Naturalist, led the discussion on the 2016 spring garden seminar. The group decided to once again plan and organize the large-scale Saturday conference with IVCC on March 12.

“Last year’s new approach, offering both horticulture topics and natural resource and conservation topics, was successful in reaching the interests and needs of many people, and it would be good to continue that theme this year as well,” Mysker said. A committee was formed to work on the plans and details.

The regional meeting was held at IVCC to plan for community service projects, continuing education requirements and upcoming educational programs including the 2016 Spring Garden Seminar which will be held at IVCC on March 12.

“I provided a program on making salsa at the Cornerstone Community Wellness in Sheffield and the Sheffield Farmer’s Market, along with Chris Isaacson, Bureau County Master Gardener. Chris talked about growing tomatoes, and community members in the class sampled the salsa and then went out and bought all of the tomatoes.”

A number of the Master Gardeners signed up to host programs with Glassman in their local communities this coming spring. Glassman also demonstrated how to prepare a simple spaghetti squash alfredo skillet recipe.

According to Glassman, “Knowing how to prepare fresh produce for your family helps everyone eat healthier, and they learn to enjoy foods that are good for them.

Circa ‘21 will present ‘The Most Famous Reindeer of All’ ROCK ISLAND — For its first family musical of the 39th season, Circa ‘21 Dinner Playhouse presents the area debut of “The Most Famous Reindeer of All,” a holiday tale of friendship, fantasy and fun with a charming, hilarious book by Greylyn Gregory and a brand-new score by John Spencer.

This tale of a shiny-nosed reindeer who just wants to fit in is sure to delight kids of all ages, and is being brought to life by a sensational cast of professional talents.

Circa ‘21 will present show-only performances Fridays, Saturdays, and Tuesdays through Dec. 26, with an added show-only matinée on Wednesday, Dec. 23.

Doors open at 9:30 a.m. for the 10 a.m. performances, with tickets $10.50 per person.

He encouraged fellow volunteers, “We need to continue the work we do and reach out to younger audiences who want to get involved in nature and the environment. I would like to see a new group working with us that can expand our reach.” Master Naturalists work with many organizations and groups to educate and assist in maintaining and enhancing our area’s natural resources.

The Master Gardener and Master Naturalist volunteers will continue to meet on a regular basis in local Extension offices and will meet again as the four-county group in early 2016 to finalize plans for the spring garden seminar and participate in a continuing education program. ‘I on Diabetes’ education classes OGLESBY — Every 19 seconds, someone is diagnosed with diabetes. Statewide, 827,000 residents manage the chronic condition daily. Locally, between 7.5 and 10.5 percent of the population has been diagnosed with diabetes. And, nearly 1 in 4 adolescents has diabetes or prediabetes. Having a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes puts the individual at an increased risk for heart disease, blindness, kidney failure and lower extremity amputations.

The University of Illinois Extension will offer “I on Diabetes” to individuals and family members who want to learn more about prevention or management. The class will be led by Susan Glassman, nutrition and wellness educator. “I on Diabetes” provides four educational sessions and each class includes easy-to-prepare recipes, tasted in class.

Participants will learn about diabetes and the disease-related complications, how to plan and manage meals, including eating out. The importance of reading food labels, spacing meals and snacks throughout the day, and more. Healthful tips on ways to decrease the risk for other health-related problems, as well as planning for a doctor’s visit, will be discussed.

“I on Diabetes” education will take place Thursdays, Jan. 7, 14 and 28, and Feb. 4, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Illinois Valley Community College, 815 N. Orlando Smith Road, Oglesby, in Room CTC-123.

St. Thomas More Parish will present its holiday bake sale from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 12, in the parish hall, 302 Chestnut St., Dalzell. The event will feature Italian pastries, candy, cookies, cakes, succarini cookies, antipasto and all kinds of goodies.

The holiday Bureau County MS dinner will be Tuesday, Dec. 15, at Perry Memorial Hospital in Princeton. Dinner will start at 5:30 p.m. Attendees are asked to bring their favorite holiday recipe and a dish to share. The meat dishes and all table service and drinks will be provided.

Our tradition was to always have turkey on Thanksgiving and Christmas, and then we always had ham on New Year’s Day. But more and more I’m hearing of people who are preparing a ham to celebrate Christmas. Following are some ham recipes you might want to try.

Slow-Cooker Ham 1 6-pound bone-in ham 30 whole cloves 3 cups apple cider, or as needed 1 cup brown sugar 1 cup maple syrup 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon 1 tablespoon ground nutmeg 2 teaspoons ground ginger 2 tablespoons ground cloves 1 tablespoon vanilla extract (optional) 1 orange’s peel Press whole cloves into the ham, so they are evenly distributed. You may score the ham for easier insertion if you want.

Place the ham in a slow cooker. Pour in apple cider until only about 2 inches of ham is above the surface. Pack the brown sugar on top of the ham, pressing into the cloves. This will get washed away in the next step but that’s OK. Pour the maple syrup over the ham.

Season the apple cider with cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, ground cloves and vanilla. Add the orange peel to the pot. Fill the slow cooker as full as you can with apple cider without going over the fill line. Cover and set to low. Cook for 8 to 10 hours.

Baked Ham with Sweet Glaze 1 10-pound fully-cooked, bone-in ham 4 cups boiling water, or as needed 1 cup packed brown sugar 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons dry mustard powder 1/4 cup honey 1 teaspoon lemon juice, or as needed 1 20-ounce can pineapple chunks, drained 1 10-ounce jar maraschino cherries, drained Toothpicks Preheat oven to 400°. Place ham on a rack set in a roasting pan, and carefully pour about 1/2 inch of boiling water into the pan beneath the ham. Bake the ham in the preheated oven for two hours, or until a meat thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the meat (do not touch the bone) reads at least 140°.

Reduce oven heat to 350°.

In a bowl, mix together the brown sugar, flour, dry mustard, honey and lemon juice as needed to make a thick, smooth paste. Brush the ham generously with glaze. Skewer 1 pineapple chunk and 1 maraschino cherry per toothpick, and insert the decorated picks all over the ham.

If you don’t want or need a whole ham, you can bake half a ham, but choose the butt (meatier) end rather than the shank end. * Country Dijon is a milder, creamier version of Dijon mustard. Baste the ham, fruit and all, with glaze and juices that have collected in the bottom of the pan. Return to the oven, and roast for an additional 15 minutes. Let the ham rest for at least 10 minutes before slicing.

Unwrap the ham and rinse it in cold water. Place it on the rack in the roasting pan. Cover the pan with aluminum foil, leaving a 2-inch opening to allow steam to escape. Bake the ham for half the estimated cooking time, about three hours.

(Total cooking time is about 20 minutes per pound.)

Brown Sugar and Pineapple Glazed Ham 1 6-pound fully-cooked, bone-in ham 1 fresh pineapple 2 6-ounce cans pineapple juice 1 cup brown sugar Preheat oven to 325°. Place the ham, cut side down, into a roasting pan.

Cut the skin off the pineapple with a sharp knife and cut out any brown spots of skin left behind. Slice the pineapple into 1/2-inch slices and cut the cores out of the slices. Pin the slices onto the ham with toothpicks.

Bake ham in the preheated oven until a meat thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the ham reads 140°, 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

While the ham is baking, mix the pineapple juice and brown sugar in a microwave-safe ceramic or glass bowl and microwave on medium power until the glaze is boiling and slightly thickened.

Work carefully because the glaze will be sticky and very hot.

Pour about half the glaze evenly over the ham and pineapple about 1 hour before the end of baking; pour the rest over the ham about 30 minutes before the end of baking.

Hall to host hitting clinic SPRING VALLEY — The Hall Red Devils will hold a hitting clinic for both baseball and softball players with former pro player and internationally known hitting instructor, Mark Doran.

The baseball portion of the clinic will be Sunday, Jan. 17, 2016, and the softball portion will be Sunday, Jan. 24. For more information, check the Hall High School athletic website and click on the clinic tab.

Play with the Pros

PEKIN — The Christian Center’s Play with the Pros Baseball Clinic on Saturday, Dec. 19, at the Avanti’s Dome in Pekin will include instruction from World Series champ Ben Zobrist and Zach McAllister of the Cleveland Indians.

Zobrist, who is from Eureka, and McAllister (Chillicothe) are scheduled to be joined

by Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Pat Venditte, and area minor league players.

Cost is $110, which includes a shirt, hat, goodie bag and photo with the pros. The clinic runs from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for ages 8-10, and from 1 to 5:30 p.m. for ages 11-14. There are 60 spots in season.

Baseball clinic

SOUTH HOLLAND – South Suburban College head baseball coach Steve Ruzich will be

directing a two-day Catching Camp on Wednesday, Dec. 30, and Thursday, Dec. 31, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This clinic will provide catching instruction in the areas of blocking, calling a game, pick offs, pop throwing times, stance and footwork, drills for practice, pop ups, handling pitchers, and conditioning. In addition to Ruzich’s instruction, Bulldog baseball players will be on hand to help and develop skills. The players’ enthusiasm and expertise always adds to the camp’s success. The Catching Camp is open to boys ages 8-18. All players should bring their glove and gear. All participants should wear baseball or sweat pants and gym shoes, and boys must wear cups.

Ruzich has directed youth camps for the past 29 years and has taught baseball skills at many other baseball camps throughout the state. He was an All-American catcher at the College of St. Francis. He graduated in 1985 and was drafted by the Chicago White Sox. Coach Ruzich had a short stint as a pro catcher before coming to SSC as head baseball coach in 1987, where he has compiled a winning record of 1,048-607.

The cost of the Catching Camp is $100, and checks should be made payable to SSC Bulldog Baseball. Enrollment

I-70 Baseball Coaches Clinic

GREENVILLE — Legendary Atlanta Braves pitching coach Leo Mazzone, Jack Leggett (Clemson), Pat McMahon (N.Y. Yankees) and Rick Eckstein (University of Kentucky) will be the speakers for the 13th annual I-70 Baseball Coaches Clinic Sunday, Jan. 17, 2016, and Monday, Jan. 17 at Greenville High School Auditorium in Greenville.

Mazzone will speak on Sunday night and his topics include “My Pitching Philosophy,” “Leading a Staff,” “Mechanics of a Healthy Pitcher” and “Proper Ways to Teach Different Pitches.”

Leggett, McMahon and Eckstein will all speak on Monday (Martin Luther King Day).

Leggett, an ABCA Hall of Famer, will speak on “Fundamentals and Drills to Improve Infielders” and “Moving Your Team to the Next Level.”

McMahon, formerly the head coach at Mississippi State and University of Florida, will speak on “Baserunners Rules

at Each Base,” “Developing a Catcher to Call a Game,” “Strategy and Teaching Players to Take Charge,” and “When and Why to Use the Short Game.” Eckstein, the former hitting coach of the Washington Nationals, will cover “Hitting Development” and “Coaching Today’s Player.”

The clinic runs Sunday night from 6 to 8:30 p.m. followed by a coaches social at Greenville Country Club.

Monday’s clinic format runs from 9 a.m. until 3:45 p.m.

Registration for the clinic will begin an hour earlier than starting time. Clinic preregistration fees are $50 per coach, add another $10 for registering at the door. Staff rates (4-6 coaches from same coaching staff) are $175 pre-registered and $220 at the door. The clinic is a fundraiser for the Greenville High School Comets baseball program. Last year’s clinic attracted 320 baseball coaches from six different states.
