Bureau County United Way (BCUW) will host its first annual Run for a Claus 5K Run/Walk this Saturday, Dec. 10. The race starts and finishes at Soldiers and Sailors Park, at the corner of Park Avenue and South Main Street. The race begins at 9 a.m. Registration on the day of the event begins at 8 a.m. in the park, however, those who wish to pre-register may do so at www. signmeup.com/117685. Runners and walkers who pre-register for the event are $25 per individual. Save money and sign-up as a group of five or more — the cost will be $20 per individual. Runners and walkers who register on the day of the race are $30 per individual. All participants will receive a BCUW Santa hat. First- through third-place medals will be given out for the following age categories: 10 and under; 11-14; 15-19; 20-29; 30-39; 40-49; 50-59; 60-69 and 70 and over. All proceeds raised from this event will benefit the BCUW. Becoming a Gateway for the community Gateway Services wants to expand opportunities for all By Goldie Rapp grapp@bcrnews.com
PRINCETON — Gateway Services of Princeton is working to expand opportunities to the citizens it serves and to fellow community members. The organization recently captured a $11,000 grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation to design and construct a 162-foot-long pollinator garden in front of its building on West Peru Street. The garden includes a walkway made from decomposed granite that is easily accessible for wheelchairs and will eventually hold 600 plants, bushes and trees. Several volunteers from the community have helped plant the garden, which was designed be Ellen Starr and Pam Horwitz. Jeff Dean, CEO of Gateway, said the project is just one step in a larger plan to revamp the services provided by Gateway. After attending the
community revitalization meetings the city of Princeton hosted last month, Gateway took from that the idea to use the resources it has to provide more educational opportunities and help give back to the community. Dean said there are hundreds of vehicles that pass Gateway on a daily basis, but nobody stops because there are no reasons to do so. Gateway wants to change that image and implement ideas that will help make the facility more inviting for residents. Next spring, Gateway also plans to add raised garden beds that will grow organic fruits and vegetables that will be sold at the farmer’s market and also add a Little Free Library. This all ties into the long-term plan Gateway hopes to incorporate within the next three years, which is to setup and provide a yearround farmer’s market and commercial kitchen that would be open to the community.

Dean said the one-half million dollar project includes remodeling the building and making use of a 6,000-square-foot space that will soon sit empty. The space currently
houses the vehicle fleet for BPART. The transportation agency is looking to move its fleet to a new building in Wyanet, once it gets money from a state grant it received within the last year.
Dean is looking at the long-term plan as a way to create more job opportunity in the community and teach life skills to the people serviced by Gateway. It’s also a great way to get the community
involved. The entire plan for a garden, farmer’s market and commercial kitchen will also allow for cooking classes and several other education opportunities for the area.

Princeton may have a new family tradition PRINCETON — The first ever Sankt Martin – Lantern Parade will take place at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, starting at the Evangelical Covenant Church, 24 N. Main St. in Princeton. Founded by Kim Hanke, city planning intern at the city of Princeton, and sponsored by Ace Hardware and the Apollo Theatre, the event celebrates a traditional German holiday honoring Sankt Martin. The parade involves handmade lanterns carried by children and their families to honor Sankt Martin’s generosity to a coatless beggar during the Christmas season. Children of all ages from different schools and organizations will participate and walk from the Evangelical Covenant Church to Darius Miller Park. Participants will learn about the story
of Sankt Martin in a short re-enactment and enjoy a small bonfire and hot chocolate after the parade. “I thought, after having lived in Bureau County several times since I first came here as an exchange student from Germany four years ago, I have been blessed by the opportunity to serve with the city of Princeton for the past several months. I wanted to make a contribution that could create personal memories for families here in Princeton. I hope that this event will continue on to the next years,” Hanke said. Santa to make a stop in Sheffield Santa will be in downtown Sheffield to visit with the young and young at heart at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 10. Santa’s elves will be handing out candy. In case of bad weather, Santa will meet everyone at the Sheffield Community Center.
Tiskilwa’s Christmas event is Saturday TISKILWA — Tiskilwa’s County Christmas event will be held Saturday, Dec. 10. Events at Museum on Main will include Lionel trains in motion from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; a display of Santa figurines from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; a food collection for the Bureau County Food Pantry from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; a performance by the Madrigal Singers at noon; and a performance by the Bureau County Chorus at 1 p.m.
The TCA tree decoration winners will be named after the 1 p.m. concert. Tiskilwa calendars and St. Mary’s cookbooks will also be available for sale. A rug and bake sale will be from 9 a.m. to noon at the Tiskilwa Community Church. Alpacas will be on display and merchandise from the alpaca store will available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the corner of Main and Walnut streets. At the Tiskilwa Public Library, there will be a kids’
craft activity from 9 a.m. to noon and photos with Santa from 10 a.m. to noon. Various Tiskilwa “home” businesses will also have products available from 9 a.m. to noon. Hot dogs, marshmallows and cocoa will be available from 10 a.m. to noon at the TCA fire pit in front of the library. Lunch specials will be available at the Indian Valley Inn and Kelly’s Place.

What they’ll say about me at school after I graduate: Why’s it so quiet? ‘Oh, that’s right, Hannah graduated.’ Most embarrassing moment: Well, I’ve had so many that it’s hard to pick just one … But, I would have to say that it was when I fell carrying the cooler at the fresh/soph conference tournament my sophomore year. Most unforgettable moment: This whole volleyball season. Not only going Sweet 16, but the road getting there; all the practices, games, and team get-togethers.
