Festival 56 will present the comedy ‘Sorry! Wrong Chimney!’ Dec. 7-10

PRINCETON — Sometimes the best Christmas gift ideas can get you into the worst trouble.

Festival 56 will present the comedy “Sorry! Wrong Chimney!” in special holiday performances Thursday, Dec. 7, through Sunday, Dec. 10, at the Grace Performing Arts Center, 316 S. Main St. in Princeton.

In this romantic farce, newlywed husband David Tuttle moonlights as a department store Santa Claus so he can afford to buy his bride an expensive Christmas present. When his wife, Samantha, discovers he’s not really working late at his office but is coming home exhausted anyway, she’s sure he’s cheating on her.

A psychiatrist neighbor and his snobbish wife try to straighten things out but wind up creating mayhem.

Bungled attempts at hypnotism, a burglar masquerading as Santa Claus, the burglar’s gun moll, and a befuddled policeman add to David’s problems.

The result? The classic O. Henry tale “Gift of the Magi” meets “I Love Lucy.”

CCW will hold cookie walk PRINCETON — The St. Louis Council of Catholic Women (CCW) will be sponsoring its annual cookie walk on Saturday, Dec. 9, in Harkrader Hall, 616 S. Gosse Blvd. in Princeton, after the 4 p.m. Mass. The cookie walk will also continue Sunday, Dec. 10, from 8 a.m. until approximately noon.

Refreshments will be served after the Sunday morning Masses and this will offer a special time of holiday fellowship. An assortment of holiday cookies will be available and will be sold by the pound. The public is welcome to attend.

Holiday bake sale in Tiskilwa TISKILWA — A holiday bake sale will be from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 9, at the Tiskilwa Community Church.

Frequent collaborators Leo W. Sears and the late Jack Sharkey wrote “Sorry! Wrong Chimney!” in 1989. Both writers have created more than 40 plays each. Sharkey wrote hundreds of short stories and seven novels while Sears has directed 65 plays and produced 90.

“Sorry! Wrong Chimney!” is sponsored by Hal Kuehl and Sharon Mercer

with additional funding from the Illinois Arts Council. The play is included in all 2017 season ticket packages. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 7-9 and 2 p.m.

Fire department hosts Light Up Dalzell Christmas lighting contest DALZELL — The Dalz e l l F i re D e p a r t m e n t will host its first-ever Light Up Dalzell Christmas lighting contest. The event began Dec. 4, and will run through Monday, Dec. 18.

This is open to any village of Dalzell resident

and there is no cost to enter the contest.

The rules include: • Home must be inside the village of Dalzell limits and Timber Creek Estates.

• The contest must be of Christmas displays of any kind, including, but

not limited to, lighting displays, static displays, displays with music.

• Residents can enter the contest anytime from now until the Dec. 18 date.

Residents must enter the contest to be judged and prizes will be award-

ed to the top three displays as voted on by the general public and one by the fire department.

Genealogy group plans holiday meeting Dec. 7 PRINCETON — The Bureau County Genealogy Society will hold its annual combined November/December meeting on Thursday, Dec. 7, at the Society library at 629 S. Main St. in Princeton. Members and the public are encouraged to arrive at 6 p.m. for a social hour. All finger food refreshments will be furnished by the BCGS Board, and everyone is invited. The regular meeting and program will begin at 7 p.m. and will feature Connie Essig, whose topic

will be “Letters to Dale.”

Essig’s Aunt Ruth from Tampico passed away at the age of 97 and had a treasure chest in her attic. This hand-made chest with metal straps was stuffed full of hundreds of letters.

Her uncle had saved every letter that was written to him while he was in the Navy in World War II. He packed the chest, nailed it shut and mailed it home after the war.

His mother, Evadine, had written a letter almost every day. She informed

him of happenings on the farm, communication with friends and neighbors, local events, movies, news on the radio, and of course, all the town gossip. Essig states that the letters provide a wonderful picture of the home front during World War II. ‘There’s Snow Place Like Ladd’ event set for Dec. 9 LADD — The “There’s Snow Place Like Ladd” 2017 Christmas Walk will take place from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, in Ladd.

The afternoon includes kids’ crafts and activities at various businesses, plus a chance to visit with Santa.

PRINCETON — In addition to being able to come into the Princeton Public Library to use its computers or access its free wireless connection, patrons can also check out one of the library’s five new Hotspot Wi-Fi devices to take home. The borrower must be a library card holder, 18 or older, and in good standing with the library. First-time users must sign an acknowledgment form at the circulation desk prior to checkout. The device can only be checked out for seven days, and will not be renewable. When checking out the Hotspot, the borrower will receive the device, a power cord, an instruction manual, and a carrying case. All items must be returned at the same time to the front desk during business hours in order to avoid a late fee. They cannot be returned using the drop box locations. The overdue fine is $1 per day. Failure to return the Hotspot and accessories within four weeks after the original due date will result in a charge to the cardholder’s account of $100 with a $15 additional charge for the adapter. Hand the case and its contents directly to a library staff member. The user assumes responsibility for the cost of repair or replacement in the event that Wi-Fi Hotspot or its accessories are lost, stolen or damaged. Princeton Public Library does not monitor and has no control over the information accessed through the Internet and cannot be held responsible for its content. Diggersz volleyball SPRING VALLEY — Diggersz Volleyball, a Spring Valley-based club, is looking for 14U players (seventh-eighth grade) interested in playing the upcoming club season. The club is low cost (under $500) for the entire season which runs from November to possibly May depending on interest.

There will be five tournaments scheduled on Sundays with one practice a week with other nights of practice dedicated to specific talents.

No tryout will be held.

Hunters in Illinois harvested a preliminary total of 51,365 deer during the first weekend of the Illinois

Firearm Deer Season on Nov. 17-19. Hunters took 54,452 deer during the first firearm weekend in 2016.

No numbers are available yet on the recently concluded second firearm Deer Season.

Other deer hunting opportunities in the weeks ahead include: • Muzzleloader-Only Deer Season on Dec. 8-10.

• Late-Winter Antlerless-Only and CWD Deer Seasons (first segment) in select counties only on Dec. 28-31.
