Parade will be ‘Bringing it Home for Christmas’

H

oliday cheer filled last year’s Princeton Christmas Parade, as the smiling faces of these participants illustrated, and the same is planned for this year’s parade, sponsored by the Princeton Lions Club.

The 2017 parade, with the theme “Bringing it Home for Christmas,” will start at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the corner of Marquette and North Main streets.

Participants, including Santa Claus himself, will proceed down Main Street to Soldiers and Sailors Park.

Santa’s Helpers will collect food items for the food pantry along the parade route. Any paper products, personal items, dried or canned goods would be appreciated.

‘Nutcracker’ Dec. 2 ‘jazz nativity’ concert to raise funds for rural retreat performances Top musicians will perform at Hall High School SPRING VALLEY – “Bending Towards the Light,” a Christmas concert with nationally-known jazz performers and local musicians, will take place at the Hall High School Auditorium at 4 p.m. Dec. 2.

According to Andy Tecson, the lead saxophonist, the concert interprets the nativity story in a fresh, new and exciting way. Performances in the Chicago area, New York and abroad have appealed to church goers, instrumental and choral music fans, and families alike.

Tecson and his wife, Nancy, are co-sponsoring the concert with the Starved Rock Country Community Foundation to generate support for the foundation and the non-profit Glenhagen Farm Retreat, a 65-acre camp that will open next year near Dover.

“Bending Towards the

Light” tells the original Christmas story using jazz versions of traditional Christmas carols along with original music. Performers appear in costume to accent the music presented by the “jazz shepherds” and a chorus of angels.

The cast of “Bending Towards the Light” includes some of the best jazz musicians in the world. They have performed with Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, Herbie Hancock and Ella Fitzgerald among others.

Andy Tecson has led the ChurchJazz group since 1982.

Tickets to the Dec. 2 afternoon event are $25.

LASALLE — Musical director and conductor Lucia Matos and the Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra will present Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker” ballet at 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17, at LaSalle-Peru High School’s auditorium.

They will be joined by dancers from the Dance Center in LaSalle, Gray’s School of Dance in Ottawa, and Ottawa Dance Academy and the Illinois Valley Youth Choir.

“The Nutcracker” is based on Alexandre Dumas’ French version of “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” by E.T.A. Hoffmann. The story invites us into a child’s world filled with anticipation. It is a story of magic and transformation that can be enjoyed on many levels, which unfold as we experience life and reflect our awareness and perceptions that things are not always as they seem.

First performed on Dec. 18, 1892, in St. Petersburg, Russia, “The Nutcracker” has been a Christmas-time classic performed throughout the world and is almost everyone’s first ballet.

Now the entire Illinois Valley is once again being invited to join in the magic of this spectacular production. We see

toys that dance and come to life to battle mice and even a Christmas tree that grows before our eyes. The audience goes with Clara as she dances through her world of fantasy and experiences the magic of the Nutcracker, all accompanied by the Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra.

The service, designed for those who may struggle with finding joy this holiday season due to a recent change or loss, will include a time of simple music, readings and reflection.

Everyone is encouraged to sign up for the “Gift Give Away” which will take place at 7:30 p.m. that evening. The gifts fit into five different age categories. You must be present to win. The basket raffle drawing will follow the “Gift Give Away.”

There will also be the annual “Bradford’s Holiday Home of the Year” award of $100 for the best decorated house.

Judging will take place prior to the Christmas Walk events on Thursday, Nov. 30.

The village of Bradford has hosted the Christmas Walk for many years and wants to bring this event back to its former importance as a holiday event that brings our community together.

Breakfast with Santa

SHEFFIELD — The Sheffield Lions Club will serve its annual pancake/sausage breakfast from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, at St. Patrick’s Parish Hall in Sheffield. Tickets are $6 for adults, $3 for ages 6 to 12 and free for preschool and under.

PERU — St. Bede Academy will again hold Breakfast with Santa from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 2, at the Academy. The cost this year is $12 per person, which will include breakfast, a meeting with Santa, make and take crafts, movies, readers, carolers and a ride on the Starved Rock Christmas Trolley.

CCW will hold annual cookie walk PRINCETON — The St. Louis Council of Catholic Women (CCW) will sponsoring its annual cookie walk on Saturday, Dec. 9, in Harkrader Hall, 616 S. Gosse Blvd. in Princeton, after the 4 p.m. Mass. The cookie walk will also continue Sunday, Dec. 10, from 8 a.m. until approximately noon. Refreshments will be served after the Sunday morning Masses and this will offer a special time of holiday fellowship. An assortment of holiday cookies will be available and will be sold by the pound. The public is welcome.

Annual Christmas Walk in Bradford set for Dec. 2 BRADFORD — The 2017 Christmas Walk in the village of Bradford will be Saturday, Dec. 2. The evening’s activities will begin at Elsie Hodges Park. Santa Claus will arrive at the park for the Lighting of the Park at 5 p.m.

There will be Christmas caroling at the park and then all present are invited to walk and sing carols on their way to the First Baptist Church where there will be prizes, food, raffles, gifts and more.

Upon arrival at the church, participants in the Christmas Walk will be able to purchase a barbecue or hot dog meal complete with dessert and drink for $4 ($1 more for extra sandwich). They can also visit the seven different vendors and buy chances on the many raffle baskets and items to win. Tickets for the raffle are $1 each or six tickets for $5.

Christmas Walk planned in Ladd LADD — The “There’s Snow Place Like Ladd” 2017 Christmas Walk will take place from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, in Ladd.

The afternoon includes kids’ crafts and activities at various businesses, plus a chance to visit with Santa. Grace the white-tailed deer, the Elm City Bell ringers, musicians and plenty of food are part of the schedule.

Holiday cookies and goodies will be available for purchase at the Ladd Library’s bake sale, and letters can be mailed to Santa. A vendors’ market will be at the Ladd Moose Lodge and the Snowman Parade will start at 5 p.m. Winners of the holiday lighting contest will be announced afterward. PRINCETON — In addition to being able to come into the Princeton Public Library to use its computers or access its free wireless connection, patrons can also check out one of the library’s five new Hotspot Wi-Fi devices to take home.

The borrower must be a library card holder, 18 or older, and in good standing with the library. First-time users must sign an acknowledgement form at the circulation desk prior to checkout. The device can only be checked out for seven days, and will not be renewable.

When checking out the Hotspot, the borrower will receive the device, a power cord, an instruction manual, and a carrying case. All items must be returned at the same time to the front desk during business hours in order to avoid a late fee. They cannot be returned using the drop box locations.

The overdue fine is $1 per day. Failure to return the Hotspot and accessories within four weeks after the original due date will result in a charge to the cardholder’s account of $100 with a $15 additional charge for the adapter. Hand the case and its contents directly to a library staff member. The user assumes responsibility for the cost of repair or replacement in the event that Wi-Fi Hotspot or its accessories are lost, stolen or damaged.

Longtime play area finally has a name City honors Marililly Blum for donation of Noles Park

BY BECKY KRAMER news@bcrnews.com SPRING VALLEY — Nestled on the east side of Spring Valley, past the curves that lead motorists out of town, lies a small neighborhood called Webster Park.

There is a park in Webster Park, but it never had a name except to be called Webster Park Park.

As of Nov. 18, that park has a name — Noles Park — that will remind residents of Webster Park and Spring Valley of the family that made it possible for the children of the neighborhood to play and enjoy the outdoors over the past 100 years.

Marililly Blum has generously donated the newly named Noles Park to the city of Spring Valley.

While thanking the family and accepting the donation, Mayor Walt Marini said, “Green space and parks are critical to cities. We appreciate the donation.”

Tim Blum, son of Marililly, spoke on behalf of the family and gave the history of the land that is now Noles Park.

Lilly and Squire Noles purchased property on the east side of Spring Valley in 1920 after moving to the area in 1919. There were only a few families living in the area at the time, and they felt it would be a great place to raise their 4 children — Marguerite,

Genevieve, Letty and Joe. Blum explained that Webster Park was quiet and safe in contrast to the “boisterous and brawling character that defined Spring Valley’s early years as a mining town.”

The Noles’ daughter, Marguerite, moved to Chicago and married Anthony Antonino. They had three children: Marililly, born in 1936, Yolanda and Anthony Jr. Unfortunate-

ly, when Marililly was 6 years old, her parents both died within 6 months of each other.

Blum said, “So, it came to be that in 1942, this tragedy brought Marililly and her two younger siblings back to the farm in Webster Park to live with their grandparents Lilly and Squire.”

Over the previous 22 years, Webster Park had grown steadily, and there

were more families and more children there, so the three siblings had plenty of people to play with.

The field directly in front of the family home was largely unused, and it became a play area for the family as well as the other children in the neighborhood.

After Marililly’s grandparents died, Uncle Joe Noles, a bachelor, inherited the farm and became the caretaker of the three children.

Blum said, “Some of the older folks may recall that Joe was a lifelong bachelor and fit well with Spring Valley’s more raucous side. Family life was quite a departure from Joe’s norm.”

Luckily for the children, the community of Webster Park was there to help.

There was always someone available to encourage or provide something that was needed.

In the 1950s, Joe allowed more active use of this field as a park. Then in the late 1960s, Joe subdivided a parcel just west of the farm house so Anthony Jr. (lovingly known as Uncle Sonny) could build a home.

said, “Our childhood is anchored to this park.”

She continued reminiscing that Uncle Joe always had the bases for the baseball field on his porch. Anyone could use the bases, but you’d best Marililly remember Blum to put them back when you were done.

Blum said, “As a kid, I remember playing with my cousins in this field, and I remember learning to swing a baseball bat for the first time in this field.”

In 1989, Joe passed away and left the farmhouse and field to Marililly.

Marililly spent time both in Chicago and in Webster Park over the years.

Marililly worked with the city to install playground equipment and establish the field as a formal park.

Now in her 80s, Marililly still remembers all of the fun she had growing up in Webster Park. Some of her fondest memories include the Fourth of July fireworks that Uncle Joe put on, and playing kick the can with the neighborhood kids.

SPRING VALLEY — Diggersz Volleyball, a Spring Valley-based club, is looking for 14U players (seventh-eighth grade) interested in playing the upcoming club season. The club is low cost (under $500) for the entire season which runs from November to possibly

May depending on interest. There will be five tournaments scheduled on Sundays with one practice a week with other nights of practice dedicated to specific talents.
