Preparing for Black Friday Mick Bowers of Gustafson’s Ace Hardware in Princeton arranges holiday displays in preparation of the upcoming Black Friday sales. Gustafson’s will be one of many stores who will either open their doors early or offer “hard to beat” sales the day after Thanksgiving, as shoppers kick off the 2014 holiday shopping season. The term “day after Thanksgiving” is said to have originated in Philadelphia and was used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic that would occur the day after Thanksgiving. Use of the term is said to have started around the early ‘60s and became a well-known term for the big holiday shopping day by the mid ‘70s. It wasn’t until later years when the term “Black Friday” was adopted. Retailers traditionally operated at a financial loss from January through November, and “Black Friday” indicated the point at which retailers began to turn a profit, or watch their budget number rise “in the black.” IV Scene photo/Goldie Currie
