Shopping and more shopping Black Friday and Small Business Saturday are in sight Area residents are prepping their Christmas lists and double checking the business ads as they prepare for some of the busiest shopping days of the year.

Many Bureau County businesses are hoping to see residents take advantage of the holiday specials that will be promoted on Small Business Saturday, which falls on Saturday, Nov. 28.

On this day, shoppers are encouraged to keep their dollars local and support their hometown businesses. Shopping along local Main Streets rather than at the bigger retail shops helps support economy and job base in our own backyard.

Small Business Saturday was first conceived and promoted in 2010

by American Express. Since then, the shopping day has become more popular each year. Keeping dollars local will only continue to help our communities thriving.

Ingrained Images Photographer Dan Acker and the Flour House Bakery unite for the first Bookshelf Gallery

PRINCETON — Along with the appeal of the daily variety of freshly baked goods and brewed drinks, one of the attractions of Princeton’s Flour House Bakery has been its atmosphere. Long shelves filled with books and small items run down the length of both sides, encouraging patrons to slow down, peruse the titles and perhaps pull one off the shelf to enjoy.

Professional photographer Dan Acker, a resident of Tiskilwa and a Flour House regular, approached owners Terri and Sallee Zearing this summer with an idea of subtly incorporating more art onto the shelves. This was the beginning of what has come to be called the Bookshelf Gallery. On the evening of Friday, Nov. 13, the bakery hosted a reception for it’s first exhibition, a collection of Acker’s photography.

“The minute he explained his idea to us, we loved it. I loved the idea of doing it this way; just one artist and art that enhances our look and not just a bunch of price tags,” said Terri.

“I’ve always admired the decor here, it’s a unique environment. I had the idea, with all these bookshelves and objects around, that it’d be fun to integrate small art pieces into it; not necessarily clear the shelves and make it all about the art, but to make it to where it’s almost to the point of where if you weren’t paying attention, you wouldn’t know it was there,” said Acker.

Acker, who worked for Bloomberg News in New York City from 2000 to 2010, is now a freelance photojournalist whose work is frequently to provide images of the presidential candidates as they travel through the region.

“I do a lot of politics, especially lately. I’ve been in Iowa more than I’ve been in Illinois. The next few months will be pretty hectic until the caucus on the 2nd of February. It keeps me busy,” said Acker.

As he travels across the region on his way to or from the latest political events, Acker’s eye is always keen to lock on to anything which may make for an interesting image.

“I do a lot of u-turns and stand on the roof of my truck quite frequently,” said Acker.

He went on to explain his feelings and intentions toward his work in the Bookshelf Gallery.

“It’s one thing to get paid to make a picture and cover a specific event or to illustrate a story, but this work is sort of everything else. These pictures represent my reactions to light and shape,” said Acker.

The images themselves are, as you’d expect from a professional photographer, well composed and striking on their own, but what adds an extra artistic dimension is they’ve been printed on wood.

“There’s something tactile about agriculture and the way farmers interact with the earth and equipment. I felt like the wood brought a bit of that natural element into the photograph in a way I can’t control. I can print the image, but I don’t know how the graining is going to interact until it’s printed. If you look over these, most are formally composed and they’re purposeful; and I think that comes through, but that element of being out of my control appealed to me. I like the way the images interact with the wood,” said Acker.

While the photos are of recognizable scenes and familiar places, they all share some similar qualities which are enhanced to great effect by the wood grain. “A lot of them are simple and minimalistic. I like photographing in fog and blizzards, when things are obscured. It can take a common scene that you might look at every day and dramatically change it. It can give a dreamy, eerie quality,” Acker said.

The exhibition opening on Nov. 13 was the first of what the Zearings are planning on being a continuing feature of the Flour House Bakery. Acker’s work will be available and on display through the holiday season. Afterwards, the Zearings hope to have continued displays of local art.

The selected photos of professional photographer Dan Acker have been printed on wood, giving each piece a unique look. The prints come in 6-by-6, 8-by-8 or 10-by-10 inch sizes and are on display throughout the bookshelves of the Flour House Bakery on Princeton’s Main Street. community by providing a way for people to notice their work; it just has to be able to integrate into the bookshelves,” said Terri.

As the evening crowd mingled, enjoying the pleasures of the refreshments and examining the images on display, the appreciation of both the art and the ambiance were

unanimous. Flour House patron Julie Nelson said, “They’re wonderful photos, and I love the effect of the wood. They go very well with the rest of the bakery,”.

IVSO to present ‘The Nutcracker’ um.

The Nutcracker scenario is based on Alexandre Dumas’ French version of “The Nutcracker” and the “Mouse King” by E.T.A. Hoffmann.

The story invites us into a child’s world filled with anticipation.

It is a story of magic and transformation that can be enjoyed on many levels which unfold as we experience life and

reflect our awareness and perceptions that things are not always as they seem.

First performed on Dec. 18, 1892, in St. Petersburg, Russia, “The Nutcracker” has been a Christmastime classic performed throughout the world and is almost everyone’s first ballet.

Now the entire Illinois Valley is being invited to view this spectacular

performance.

Ballet dancers from the Dance Center, LaSalle, Gray’s School of Dance, Ottawa, and Ottawa Dance Academy will join the IVSO, along with the Oglesby School Choir, in performing this time-honored ballet.

This program is sponsored by Spring Valley City Bank and Eureka Savings Bank, and a grant from the Illinois

Arts Council, a state agency.

The 15th annual free Thanksgiving dinner, sponsored by the Evangelical Covenant, New Hope Nazarene and St. Louis Catholic churches, will be from noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 26, at the Evangelical Covenant Church, 24 N. The Illinois Valley Community College Wind Ensemble, directed by Gene Montgomery, will offer a free concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, in the Cultural Centre. Selections include the music of Jager, Sheldon, Gabrieli, Williams, Reineke and seasonal favorites.

The ensemble includes IVCC students, local and regional music educators, and community members dedicated to the promotion of quality wind and percussion music. In addition to on-campus concerts, the ensemble also performs at community festivals and events, and works with other universities and community bands in joint concerts.

Bureau County Home & Community Education will hold a giant cookie sale from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, at Prouty Building on Main Street in Princeton.

There will be hundreds of dozens of homemade holiday cookies for sale.

The First United Church of Christ in Sheffield will host its monthly community coffee will from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, in the UCC Parish Hall. Fresh-baked cinnamon rolls will be served.

Spring Valley United Church of Christ will hold its annual cookie walk from 7:30 a.m. to noon (if cookies last that long) on Saturday, Dec. 5. A large variety of cookies will be offered at $7 per pound — you choose your own. Their world famous peanut brittle will also be offered for $7 a pound. The church is located at 227 E. Erie St. in Spring Valley; use the alley entrance.

The Princeton High School Music Department’s Madrigal dinner, “The Ghosts of Christmas Past,” will take place at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, and 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6, in “The Barn” at Hornbaker Gardens in Princeton. The First Lutheran Church in Princeton will host its third annual Christmas Carols Sing-

Along at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6. The event is an old-fashioned singalong, where those in attendance will have the opportunity to sing traditional Christmas carols they know and love.

Organist Larry Petersen of Augustana College of Rock Island will provide the music, along with the River Bend Bronze, a bell choir with participants from Eastern Iowa and Northwestern Illinois. A fellowship time after the event will include refreshments.

The church, which is handicapped accessible, is located at 116 S. Pleasant St., Princeton.

The public is invited.

There is no fee to attend, and no offering will be taken. Rather, this is the church’s gift to the community.

The Perry Memorial Hospital Auxiliary will host a tour of homes from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6. All tours begin and end at the Bureau County Metro Center in Princeton. Tour guests will be transported by B.P.A.R.T. to six decorated Princeton homes showcasing the unique, personal décor of the homeowner and their family. Before and/or after the tour, participants are welcome to enjoy complimentary hot cocoa and cookies in Shoemake Hall and browse the vendor fair featuring local artisans and their one-of-a-kind handmade items. Some vendors will also be selling their products from nationally known companies. A bluegrass, gospel and country music jam will be from 6 to 10 p.m.

PRINCETON — Friday, Nov. 27, the library will be closed due to the Thanksgiving holiday.

Monday, Nov. 30, at 6:30 p.m., the library will show a movie featuring a man just out of prison who puts together his old band to save the Catholic home where he and his brother were raised.

SPRING VALLEY — Tuesdays, at 5:30 p.m., story time is held in the children’s library. There are stories and craft activities.

Once again, the library will be selling gifts cards as a fundraiser for the holiday season. The gift cards are for many of the area and online businesses. The gift cards purchased give different percentages of the cost back to the library.

There will be two time periods to order this year. The second order will be due at noon on Friday, Dec. 4, with delivery

by Wednesday, Dec. 16. Payments for the cards must be done at the time of ordering by check and/or cash.

LAMOILLE — Beginning in December, on the second Friday of each month during the school year, the library will close at 11:45 a.m. and re-open around 1:30 p.m. During this time the librarian will be reading to the children at Van Orin School. If the schedule needs to change, it will be posted on the library’s Facebook page.

The annual Mitten Tree will soon be up. The Mitten Tree is a way to give children in the LaMoille library/school district a merrier Christmas than they might otherwise have. By choosing a mitten from the tree, patrons agree to purchase items on the needed/wanted list for that particular child, aged newborn to 12th grade. All personal

There will be one practice in the choir room (D223) at Illinois Valley Community College at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 30.

Singers are encouraged to attend the rehearsal, if possible.

If you’re like me, you always want to put your Thanksgiving leftovers to good use. While a turkey or ham sandwich works fine along with leftover salads and other side dishes, I thought I’d give you a few different ideas to put those leftovers to good use.

Turkey Tetrazzini 1 10 3/4-ounce can cream of mushroom soup 2/3 cup milk 1 16-ounce jar Alfredo sauce 3 1/2 cups chopped cooked turkey, chicken or ham 12 ounces thin spaghetti, cooked 1 10-ounce package frozen petite peas, thawed 1 8-ounce package sliced fresh mushrooms 1 1/2 cups shredded baby Swiss cheese 1 cup shredded Parmesan cheese, divided 1/2 cup crushed garlic-and-onion seasoned croutons 1/4 teaspoon paprika Whisk together soup and milk in large mixing bowl; whisk in Alfredo sauce.

Stir in chopped turkey, spaghetti, peas, mushrooms, Swiss cheese and 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese. Pour into a lightly greased 15-by-10-inch baking dish.

Stir together remaining Parmesan cheese, crushed croutons and paprika; sprinkle evenly over casserole.

Bake, covered, at 375° for 30 minutes.

Uncover, and bake 15 more minutes or until golden brown and bubbly. Let stand 10 minutes before serving.

Cranberry Upside Down Sour Cream Cake 1/2 cup butter 2 cups white sugar 2 tablespoons water 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 12-ounce bag fresh or frozen cranberries 1 1/2 cups cake flour 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 6 tablespoons butter, softened 1/2 cup white sugar 1/2 cup brown sugar 2 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 3/4 cup sour cream Preheat the oven to 350°. Generously grease a 9-inch springform pan. Wrap aluminum foil around the outside of the bottom to prevent leaking.

Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in 1 1/2 cups of white sugar, water and cinnamon until sugar has dissolved. Bring to a boil and then add the cranberries. Stir to coat with the sauce, then pour into the prepared pan.

Sift together the flour, baking soda and salt; set aside. In a medium bowl, beat

the remaining 6 tablespoons of butter with 1/2 cup white sugar and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Mix in the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in vanilla and sour cream.

Mix in the dry ingredients. Pour the batter over the cranberries in the pan.

Bake for about 50 minutes, or until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool on a rack for 10 minutes, then run a knife around the outer edge.

Invert onto a serving plate and remove the springform pan.

Turkey Pot Pie 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon salt 7 tablespoons cold vegetable shortening 6 tablespoons cold butter 6 tablespoons cold water, or as needed 3 tablespoons butter 2 carrots, diced 1 onion, diced 2 stalks celery, diced 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 2 cups cubed cooked turkey 2 tablespoons butter 2 cups chicken broth 1 15-ounce can cut green beans, drained 1 10.75-ounce can condensed cream of mushroom soup 1/2 15-ounce can cream-style corn 1 tablespoon chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley 1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme In a bowl, whisk together 2 cups of flour with salt. Using a pastry cutter, cut the vegetable shortening and 6 tablespoons of cold butter into the flour mixture until the butter and shortening are the size of small peas. Sprinkle on cold water, 1 tablespoon at a time, and gently gather the moistened dough together with a fork until it just begins to clean flour from the side of the bowl. Separate the dough into two equal-size pieces, form into rounds, and refrigerate until needed.

Preheat oven to 425°. Melt 3 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium heat, and cook the carrots, onion and celery with black pepper until the onions are translucent, about 8 minutes. Transfer the mixture into a bowl and set aside. Place 2 tablespoons of flour into a resealable plastic zipper bag, and toss the cooked turkey meat into the flour; shake the bag to coat. Melt 2 more tablespoons of butter in the same skillet over medium heat, and cook the turkey meat in the butter until the flour coating turns golden brown, about 10 minutes.

Pour the chicken broth into the skillet about 1/2 cup at a time, and stir until the broth begins to simmer and thicken, about 5 minutes. Remove the skillet from the heat.

Stir in the cooked vegetables, green

beans, cream of mushroom soup, creamstyle corn, parsley and thyme until the filling is thoroughly combined.

Roll out one of the dough pieces on a floured work surface to a circle about 11 inches in diameter, then fit the crust into a 10-inch pie dish. Pour the filling into the bottom crust. Roll out the second crust into an 11-inch circle, lay it on top of the filling, then pinch and fold the two crusts together at the edges to seal. Cut 5 slits into the top crust to vent steam.

Bake the pie in the preheated oven for 15 minutes; lower the oven temperature to 350° and bake until the filling is bubbling and the crust is golden brown, about 25 more minutes.

You can also use a refrigerated pie crust for this recipe and save yourself a lot of time.

oven over medium heat for 7 to 10 minutes or until tender. Add garlic, and saute one minute. Stir in turkey, chili beans, broth, corn with peppers, tomatoes and chilies, chili powder, cumin, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally; reduce heat, and simmer 15 minutes.

Turkey Salad 6 eggs 6 cups cooked turkey meat 1 16-ounce jar sweet pickles, chopped 1 1/2 10-ounce jars mustardmayonnaise blend 3/4 cup mayonnaise Place eggs in a medium saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring water to a boil and immediately remove from heat.

Cover and let eggs stand in hot water for 10 to 12 minutes. Remove from hot water, cool, peel and chop.

In a large bowl, thoroughly mix the eggs, turkey, pickles, mustard/mayo blend and mayonnaise. Chill in the refrigerator approximately 3 hours before serving.

SPRING VALLEY — The Hall Red Devils will hold a hitting clinic for both baseball and softball players with former pro player and internationally known hitting instructor, Mark Doran.

The baseball portion of the clinic will be Sunday, Jan. 17 and the softball portion will be Sunday, Jan. 24. For more information, check the Hall High School athletic website and click on the clinic tab.

PRINCETON — Indoor golf is underway at the Bureau County Metro Center, using the OptiShot golf simulator, which allows golfers to practice their swings while playing some of the world’s best courses. You may call for a tee time or to join a league.

Play with the Pros

PEKIN — The Christian Center’s Play with the Pros Baseball Clinic Saturday, Dec. 19 at the Avanti’s Dome in Pekin will include instruction from World Series champ Ben Zobrist and Zach McAllister of the Cleveland Indians.

Cost is $110, which includes a shirt, hat, goodie bag and photo with the pros. The clinic runs from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for ages 8-10, and 1-5:30 p.m. for ages 11-14. There are 60 spots in season.

SVWC Members Only Tournament

SPRING VALLEY — The Spring Valley Walleye Club will have its 21st Annual Members Only fishing tournament Saturday, Nov. 28. It starts at Barto Landing, There is an $80 entry fee before Nov. 16 and $160 after.

First prize will be $750, second $350, and third will be $250. After the weigh-in, there will be free food and drinks.

Rules and regulations for the event are: All boats must leave from and return to Barto Landing.

Five fish limit per team.

Fourteen-inch minimum length.

No dead fish will be weighed.

Scale house will open at noon.

Fishing time will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Brief rules meeting will be held at 7:30 a.m.

Indoor soccer

PRINCETON — The indoor adult soccer league will start Tuesday, Dec. 15 at the Bureau County Metro Center.

The league runs through Jan. 19 with games beginning at 5:30 p.m. Cost is $50 per team.

Turkey Trot

OGLESBY— The 37th Oglesby 3-Mile Turkey Trot will be Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 26. The race will start at 9 a.m. at Holy Family School. Pre-registration is $20 and $25 race day.

Entry fee is $10 for ages 13 and under.

Each person bringing a non-perishable food donation for the Illinois Food Pantry will receive a free gift.
