Talkin’ turkey While it’s no secret the turkey will adorn many Thanksgiving tables around the nation, the facts surrounding this famous holiday bird will help you appreciate that juicy main entree on your Thanksgiving table.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Minnesota is the top turkey-producing state in America. Six states — Minnesota, North Carolina, Arkansas, Missouri, Virginia and Indiana — collectively produce nearly two-thirds of the almost 250 million turkeys raised in the United States this year.

While turkey is good any time of the year, the National Turkey Federation estimates about 46 million turkeys — or about one-fifth of the annual total consumed in the nation — are eaten at Thanksgiving. The National Turkey Federation conducted a recent survey where Americans said nearly 88 percent eat turkey on Thanksgiving.

The average weight of a Thanksgiving turkey is 15 pounds.

But what would a delicious turkey be without cranberry sauce to accompany that juicy bird?

Wisconsin, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oregon and Washington are the top cranberry growing states in the country.

And what about the pumpkin pie?

Illinois, California, Pennsylvania and New York are the major pumpkin growing states, with Illinois taking top honors in that division.

First Lutheran’s gift to the community Old-fashioned Christmas Carol Sing-a-Long set for Nov. 27

PRINCETON — With the holidays just a hop, skip and jump down the road, one’s gift-giving list will begin to grow — both in items to buy and money to spend. For many, the list will be long, and the pockets will need to be deep.

But in the chaos of the Christmas season, First Lutheran Church of Princeton again wants to offer a gift from the heart — one that doesn’t cost a dime and clearly resonates with the spirit of the Christmas season. It’s the church’s gift to the community — no strings attached.

Set for 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 27, at First Lutheran Church, 116 N. Pleasant St., Princeton, the fourth annual Christmas Carol Sing-a-Long promises to be as impressive as the three before it. This year will no doubt be a repeat performance, as First Lutheran gets ready to invite the entire community to come celebrate the holiday with them through song and music.

Formerly spearheaded by the late Dick Dorsch, First Lutheran’s worship committee is now organizing the popular event, which includes an hour to an hour and one-half of Christmas carols, music and fellowship. June Ohlson is the chairperson of the worship committee.

“Our whole intent is we want people to come and enjoy singing their favorite Christmas carols ... This is not a worship service,” Ohlson emphasized. “It’s fun; it’s good old-fashioned Christmas carol fun.”

This year’s event will be a bit different from the past three events. Previously, organist Larry Peterson of Augustana College Campus Ministries accompanied event-goers with his organ music. Since Peterson has moved out of the area, local musicians have stepped into offer their musical talents.

To add to the incredible sound of an entire church collectively singing Christmas carols, Kathy Allen will be accompanying singers on the piano, and the Monarch Brass Quintet will play several selections as well. The Monarch Brass Quintet is comprised of Ann Lusher, horn; John Armstrong, trumpet; Barb Kinzer, trumpet; Ron Makeever, trombone;

The Monarch Brass Quintet is new to this year’s Christmas Carol Sing-a-Long. They will perform a variety of holiday selections throughout the event on Sunday, Nov. 27. and David Peterson, tuba.

Dale Fiste will emcee the event.

Those who attend are encouraged to dress casually, sing their hearts out and enjoy the sound of a sanctuary filled with music and voices. There is no charge to attend, and no freewill offering will be solicited. Event-goers are encouraged to enjoy refreshments and camaraderie in the church’s fellowship hall after the sing-a-long.

Annual toy drive is underway

It’s a simple mission that includes a ton of work.

It’s a simple mission that involves hundreds of children, yet their smiles on Christmas morning is the motivation for the effort.

It’s a simple mission, and your help is needed.

For the third consecutive year, the Princeton Wesleyan Church is spearheading the Christmas for Kids event, a holiday toy drive that ensures less fortunate children will have gifts under their Christmas trees on Christmas morning.

The annual toy drive officially began Friday, Nov. 18, when the large boxes bearing the Christmas for Kids logo will be in place and ready for area citizens to deposit new, unwrapped toys for distribution to families before Christmas.

“As of right now, we already have 85 families who have been referred to us from the school systems,” said Princeton Wesleyan Pastor Doug Kirkpatrick, adding he expects a bigger need this year than the past two years in which the church has been involved. He said he learned there’s a 40 percent increase in families who qualify for free or reduced lunches

at Princeton Elementary — a barometer of the economic impact and the increase in need.

Kirkpatrick said the church receives its list of names referred by the local school systems.

If there are people out there who need help with Christmas gifts and their children are not yet of school age, he suggested they call Marcia Caldwell

It started seven years ago. Launched by American Express in 2010, shopping “small” on the Saturday after Thanksgiving has turned into a big deal. And in those seven short years, it’s nearly as implanted in the holiday shopping experience as the well-known Black Friday extravaganza.

Small Business Saturday asks shoppers to patronize its local mom-and-pop stores, restaurants and other independently-owned establishments, operated in one’s hometown or immediate area. While the well-known Black Friday sale, which now often begins on Thanksgiving Day rather than the Friday after Thanksgiving, is focused primarily on the big box stores, their pre-holiday promotions/hype and the chaos involved in the entire experience, Small Business Saturday is meant to be a pleasurable experience in one’s own backyard – so to speak, and offers shopper a more lei-

children and the invitation to shop on Dec. 10. The letter will be the entrance ticket into the event. Once families get to the church on Dec. 10, each family will get a ticket with a number on it. A corresponding number will be placed in a lottery drawing, and numbers will be pulled out at random, giving the family entrance into the toy store at the church.

Families will be assigned an escort to work with them while they shop.

Doors will open at 8 a.m.

Since Christmas presents represent the element of surprise, children are not allowed at the event — only adults, parents/grandparents/ guardians. Parents will get to choose the gifts best suited for their child(ren). The number of gifts depends on the generosity of givers. All gifts will be placed in a bag, so adults can get the presents into the house without anxious little eyes seeing the surprises.

Christmas movies and refreshments in the church sanctuary will help pass the time for those adults waiting to shop.

Kirkpatrick said any and all gifts — big and small — are welcome.

“I just want people to let their hearts be their guide,” Kirkpatrick said.

“If they can donate a toy, that’s great. If they’re not sure of what to get or how much to give, they can go into the (Heartland) bank (and make a monetary donation) or mail a check into the church. I have a concern about the amount of children who

are needed to pull off the event, and in the past, folks from other churches and organizations have been quick to pitch in, including the Princeton Police Department and the Bureau County Sheriff’s Department, which picks up toys from the boxes located around the county.

Local program delivers holiday spirit to Illinois Valley seniors PERU – The holidays are a time to celebrate the joy and warmth of the season with friends and family. In the Illinois Valley area, the local Home Instead Senior Care office is inviting the community to celebrate with local seniors who may be alone during the holiday season.

The Home Instead Senior Care office serving the Illinois Valley area is helping to facilitate Be a Santa to a Senior, a community program that provides gifts and companionship to seniors who may be isolated from friends or family during the holiday season. The program is made possible through the generous support of Illinois Valley area businesses, non-profit organizations, retailers, numerous volunteers and members of the community.

“The holidays can be a troubling time for seniors. They may feel the absence or the distance of loved ones,” said Christine Schouten of the Home Instead Senior Care office serving the Illinois Valley. “Be a Santa to a Senior provides a ray of hope for many seniors, and it means so much for them to know that people care and value them as members of our community.”

The local Home Instead Senior Care office has partnered with several local businesses, including Hy-Vee Foods, Handy Foods, Sullivan’s Foods, Jewel-Osco, LaSalle Veteran’s Homes, IVCH Adult Day Care, Bureau County Senior Center, Voluntary Action Center, Mobile Meals programs, among others, to help with gift collection and distribution.

The parade will start at 1:30 p.m.

Saturday, Dec. 3, starting from Maria’s Pizza and continuing down Main Street to Soldiers and Sailors Park. Santa Claus will be in the parade. The theme for this year’s parade is “Ringing in

Christmas.”

The events are free.

On the second Tuesday of every month, the library hosts blood pressure and blood sugar screenings for free.

The screenings are administered by St. Margaret’s Health from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. The next screening date is Tuesday, Dec. 13.

TISKILWA — On the first Wednesday of each month

at 4:30 p.m., the library’s book club for adults meets.

Every Thursday at 10:45 a.m., the library hosts a senior fitness class. Participants focus on balance, endurance, muscular strength, mental clarity and socialization. There is no cost to attend.

Every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., the library hosts a yoga class, where participants enjoy camaraderie with others and are challenged mentally and physically. Cost is $5 per person.

BUREAU — The Leepertown Township Public Library is open from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday; and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

LADD — The library sponsors an adult coloring club on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Wednesdays from 5 to 7 p.m. Adult card club is on Fridays from 1 to 3 p.m.

PERU — The Peruvian Purlers meet weekly on Saturday morning at the Peru Public Library from 10 a.m. to noon. Whether a knitter or crocheter - expert or newbie - everyone is welcome to join the Purlers.

Late state payments causing BPART to make changes Delays in payments from the state of Illinois are causing the reduction of services of a downstate Illinois transit system. More than $450,000 is owed by the state to the public transit provider in Bureau County. Bureau Putnam Area Rural Transit (BPART) is one of 56 urban and rural public transportation systems downstate that receives operating assistance through the Downstate Public Transportation Fund, which is funding derived by a portion of the state sales taxes collected in the service areas of each public transportation system.

Downstate public transportation systems provided a combine total of more than 41.5 million rides in Fiscal Year 2016. Out of those rides, BPART has provided 68,940 rides in FY ‘16 (running from July 1, 2015, through June 30, 2016).

Illinois Public Transportation Association Executive Director Laura Calderon said, “The public transportation systems across the state provide critical services to some of the state’s most vulnerable populations. Downstate particularly, the bulk of the riders are elderly, person with disabilities, and the low income population, who are relying on public transportation to get them to work, medical appointments and other critical services.”

A part of the area’s population uses BPART for rides to every day to work. Another part of the population uses the service for medical appointments. The area cannot afford for the transit system to reduce its services. Delay in payments has resulted in other public transportation providers to suspend all services in their areas.

Part of the problem is a considerable delay in grantees of the Downstate Public Transportation Program receiving their FY ‘17 contracts, resulting in a delay in processing of first and second quarter vouchers. State statute allowed the downstate transit systems to advance request payment for the first quarter of FY ‘17 on June 1 and the second quarter, Sept. 1. As contracts have been obligated, the Illinois Department of Transportation has been processing first and second quarter vouchers and sending them to the comptroller’s office for payments.

“Due to the inability of the state to reimburse BPART for its money owed, we have been forced to reduce services effective Dec. 1,” a press release states.

The following services will be reduced: • Transportation to Peoria and Ottawa will be reduced to one day a month, and Saturday dialysis also.

• Suspend at the end of the fall semester the rides to Illinois Valley Community College.

Run for a Claus 5K Run PRINCETON — The Run for a Claus 5K Run will be Saturday, Dec. 10 starting from Soldiers and Sailors in Princeton.

Cost for the Bureau County United Way fundraiser is $25 per participant or $20 per participant for groups of 5 or more for preregistration. The cost is $30 per participant on the day of the race.

at 9 a.m. GES Sound will be at the start/finish playing your favorite Christmas tunes and Santa hats will be provided for all participants.

Even if you aren’t a runner, please consider walking. This is a fun event that will help raise money for the Bureau County United Way and its 12 local agencies.

Thundercat wrestling GRANVILLE — The fifth– through eighth-grade Thundercat Wrestling Club season begins Monday, Nov. 28.

Practices will be Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday nights from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Putnam County High School

Media Center.

Competitive tournaments (carpool available) are Jan. 8, 2017, Morton Tournament; Jan. 22, Pekin Tournament; Jan. 29, LaSalle Tournament; Feb. 5, Mendota Tournament; Feb. 12, Martinez Tournament (Hinsdale); March 4, regionals (LaSalle-Peru); March 11, sectionals (Rock Island); and March 16-18 state (Rockford).

Other tournaments available.

Total fee for the club is $85 due Nov. 28. This covers the IKWF $45 membership, $10 USA Wrestling membership, shirt, and singlet. Other fees are shoes $25-$50 (Google Wrestling Gear); headgear $15; and tournament fees are $15-$20 per tournament to

Lions Pride hosts Kids Toy Drive LAMOILLE — LaMoille High School is sponsoring the Christmas for Kids Toy Drive with the Bureau County United Way. There will be a box for collection in the entrance to the High School.

The Lions Pride Spirit Club would like to encourage the community to help with this collection at upcoming boys basketball team. On Thursday, Dec. 2, the boys will host Kirkland High School. LHS will

offer half-price admission for each person that brings a toy or gift to help fill our box.
