Christmas for Kids is back again this year, collecting new, unwrapped children’s toys at more than 30 collection boxes placed in seven communities in Bureau County. One of the collection boxes is at the Bureau County Republican office, 800 Ace Road, Princeton. The last day to donate toys in the boxes is Dec. 7.

Christmas for Kids gift project in midst of fourth campaign

Residents can help make the holidays merry, bright for kids STAFF REPORT news@bcrnews.com PRINCETON — The Christmas for Kids campaign has returned for a fourth year of gathering donations of new, unwrapped children’s toys at more than 30 collection points and distributing them to less fortunate parents to help them provide a merry Christmas for their kids.

The next several weeks are important to the success of the project, as distribution of toys to invited parents is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 9.

Pastor Doug Kirkpatrick of the Princeton Wesleyan Church is again directing the project.

“In 2014, the opportunity was presented to our church, Princeton Wesleyan Church, by the Bureau County United Way to begin facilitating the Christmas for Kids program,” Kirkpatrick said.

“We had been looking for a meaningful way to be involved in the community and felt we should take this opportunity,” he said.

Kirkpatrick said the effort goes way beyond the walls of his church.

“There are individuals along with businesses in Princeton and the surrounding area that have the same desire to serve our community in a meaningful way. Collectively, we enjoy knowing we are helping make many children’s Christmas a joyous one. The bottom line is just that – for the children,” Kirkpatrick said.

The toy drive, which is in progress and will continue until Dec. 7, serves newborns through eight-graders in Princeton, LaMoille, Malden, Ohio, Neponset, Wyanet, Sheffield, Buda and Manlius.

All other towns are served by other programs in the county.

“The donation boxes where toys can be dropped off have been in place for a couple of weeks,” Kirkpatrick said. “The time set for accepting referrals has come and by press time will be closed.

“What the community will see now are opportunities to support Christmas for Kids via fundraisers,” he said.

A concert has already been held at The Kompany, 432 S. Main St., Princeton, where the “cover charge” was a toy or monetary donation for Christmas for Kids.

On Dec. 6, there will be a “Freezin’ for a Reason” event to raise funds.

Kirkpatrick said the last day to donate toys in the boxes is Dec. 7.

“However, monetary donations can be deposited in the Christmas for Kids account at the Heartland Banks until Friday, Dec. 8,” he said.

Kirkpatrick said nearly 200 families have been referred to Christmas for Kids by school systems, a total that represents about 400 or more children from Princeton and the surrounding area.

Parents who have been referred to the program will receive a letter from the church inviting them to attend the shopping event at the church on Dec. 9. The letter serves as the entrance ticket to the event, where parents take turns shopping through the donated gifts to find suitable ones for their children.

People who donate toys do so for various reasons, including people who benefited from the program in the past who want to give back, and parents bringing their children to put toys in the boxes “so they could learn that life is not always about ‘me’ but rather how we as people can help one another,” Kirkpatrick said.

“The common theme I have seen is that of helping and giving to others out of the goodness of people’s hearts,” he said. “There are a lot of good generous people in Princeton and the surrounding area.”

Numerous folks assist the project, such as people from other churches and organizations, as well as law enforcement officers from Princeton and Bureau County, who pick up donated toys from

boxes spread across seven communities.

More volunteers are always welcome, Kirkpatrick said.

“If someone would like to volunteer or find out what needs we have in that area, they can contact us at christmasforkids@comcast.net,” he said.

Annual Christmas Walk in Bradford scheduled for Dec. 2 BRADFORD — The 2017 Christmas Walk in the village of Bradford will be Saturday, Dec. 2.

The evening’s activities will begin at Elsie Hodges Park. Santa Claus will arrive at the park for the Lighting of the Park at 5 p.m. There will be Christmas caroling at the park and then all present are invited to walk and sing carols on their way to the First Baptist Church where there will be prizes, food, raffles, gifts and more.

Upon arrival at the church, participants in the Christmas Walk will be able to purchase a barbecue or hot dog meal complete with dessert and drink for $4 ($1 more for extra sandwich). They can also visit the seven different vendors and buy chances on the many raffle baskets and items to win. Tickets for the raffle are $1 each or six tickets for $5.

PRINCETON — In addition to being able to come into the Princeton Public Library to use its computers or access its free wireless connection, patrons can also check out one of the library’s five new Hotspot Wi-Fi devices to take home.

The borrower must be a library card holder, 18 or older, and in good standing with the library. First-time users must sign an acknowledgement form at the circulation desk prior to checkout. The device can only be checked out for seven days, and will not be renewable.

When checking out the Hotspot, the borrower will receive the device, a power cord, an instruction manual, and a carrying case. All items must be returned at the same time to the front desk during business hours in order to avoid a late fee. They cannot be returned using the drop box locations.

The overdue fine is $1 per day. Failure to return the Hotspot and accessories within four weeks after the original due date will result in a charge to the cardholder’s account of $100 with a $15 additional charge for the adapter.

Hand the case and its contents directly to a library staff member. The user assumes responsibility for the cost of repair or replacement in the event that Wi-Fi Hotspot or its accessories are lost, stolen or damaged.

Gov. Bruce Rauner signed into law House Bill 2893, which amended the Illinois Wildlife Code to repeal restrictions on the use of crossbows during archery hunting seasons in Illinois.

Illinois law previously allowed the use of crossbows for archery hunting by persons age 62 or older, and those persons with disabilities who qualified for a crossbow permit issued by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR). In addition, the previous law allowed certain youth hunters to use crossbows, and allowed all archery hunters to use crossbows beginning the Monday after the second firearm deer season.

The 2017-18 season dates for archery deer and fall turkey archery hunting in Illinois are Oct. 1 through Jan. 14, 2018. Archery seasons will be closed Nov. 30-Dec. 3 during the firearm deer season in those counties open to firearm deer hunting.
