A Thanksgiving feast Regardless of what your Thanksgiving feast holds for you and those you love, may your table be filled with the people in your life who hold a special place in your heart. Oh sure ... the turkey and all the fixings will, no doubt, be part of your Thanksgiving holiday, as will the football games, Thanksgiving Day parade and plans of Black Friday shopping. But as you make plans for your own personal Thanksgiving Day celebration, we at the Illinois Valley Scene wish you a day filled with memory-making moments, much laughter, photographs to capture it all ... and a quiet time of reflection for you to remember all those people, places and things that touch your heart and cause you to be thankful. ‘The Night They Invented Champagne’ Evening of American classics will help to kick off the holiday season

PRINCETON — With the holiday season already in motion, Festival 56 will pop the cork and shift it into full speed on Saturday, Nov. 21, with a champagne reception and performance of American song standards and light-hearted Christmas favorites.

Karen R. Nussbaum and Ron McCutchan will give voice to popular songs by Gershwin, Carmichael, Mancini, Lerner & Loewe, Rodgers & Hammerstein and more.

They will be accompanied by Jeannie Brown on piano and Al Brown on bass. There will also be a special set of holiday music, including some sing-along numbers and a moment when the audience can vote on what they’d like to hear next.

So what do Nussbaum and McCutchan enjoy about the Great American Songbook?

“They are a wonderful melding of nostalgia and sincerity. These aren’t just the songs our grandparents loved. They’re the songs of our lives as well. They resonate across the ages because their themes are universal, and their melodies are so memorable. I guarantee you will hear something on Nov. 21 that you will recognize and want to hum along,” said Nussbaum.

McCutchan said, “We thought it’d be a program people would like, and it’s different from what we’ve done before. That golden age appeals to a wide audience, and I like the variety of it. I’m singing more of the novelty, funny Christmas songs, so I’m the comic relief. We’re probably stretching the American songbook idea, but

they’re from the mid-century.”

Nussbaum is no stranger to Princeton and Festival 56.

She went to school with Dexter Brigham, the festival’s first artistic director, and directed “Of Mice and Men” during the inaugural season in 2005. She’s previously sang with McCutchan, who is a longtime friend, and has

performed many times with Al and Jeannie Brown, the first time during a production of “The Fantasticks” at the Prairie Arts Center in Princeton.

Nussbaum has been singing her entire life and has been part of many choral groups. She’s been a professional classical singer in Chicago since 2001 and has also sung abroad in England and Italy.

“The Night They Invented Champagne” pre-show reception is sponsored by Avanti Foods of Walnut and will give the audience a chance to mingle with the performers. All proceeds from the event will go toward new sound equipment for the theatre.

According to McCutchan, who is also a Festival 56 Board member and who is familiar with many for his musical talents in a variety of venues throughout the area, this event is another part of the Festival’s efforts to step outside of the usual.

“We had a really successful comedy night in September and the blues bands were also popular, so we’re looking to repeat some of those. We’re hoping to have at least one event per month in the off-season. In December we’ll have ‘Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol.’

We thought (‘The Night They Invented Champagne’) would be a good launch into the Christmas season, and audience members will be able to pick up their tickets for ‘Jacob’ during the evening,” he said.

“The Night They Invented Champagne” will be 90 minutes long, including intermission, and will provide a pleasant and memorable way to end the day of Princeton’s annual Christmas Walk.

The reception, beginning at 6 p.m., is $35 and includes show admission. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m., and tickets are $18 in advance and $20 at the door. Hall of Fame induction ceremony planned at IVCC OGLESBY — A performance by a legendary area band, Buckacre, will highlight the 6:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, IVCC-LPO Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Illinois Valley Community College’s Cultural Centre.

Darrell Data, Dick Hally and Dick Verucchi, original members of the country rock band, will be joined by musician friends in a four-song set of Buckacre favorites.

The band, made up of three former IVCC students, including the late Les Lockridge, will be inducted in the ‘hall’ along with philanthropist and 1951 LPO graduate Ralph Scriba of Palos Verdes Peninsula, Cal. Longtime IVCC and LaSalle-Peru High School English instructor Ray Brolley will be inducted posthumously.

In the mid-1970s, Buckacre performed across the U.S. with the Outlaws, Ozark Mountain Daredevils and Charlie Daniels Band, and produced two albums for MCA Records.

The first album, Morning Comes, was recorded at Olympic Studios in London with Glyn Johns, producer of the Eagles, The Who and early Rolling Stones albums.

The band practiced and performed at the Circus Bar in Spring Valley, did

several concerts at area high schools including L-P’s Howard Fellow Stadium and gained popularity in Tampa, Nashville and elsewhere.

Scriba will be inducted for his philanthropy toward IVCC and other nonprofits and his achievements as an aviation parts pioneer. In February, Scriba contributed $150,000 to IVCC’s scholarship campaign after having made a $50,000 contribution a few years earlier.

Scriba grew up on his family’s farm near Troy Grove and graduated from Mendota High School in 1945. After his 1948 discharge from the Navy, he attended LPO. In 1956, he left Douglas Aircraft in Southern California to found Swift-Cor, a manufacturer of parts for Boeing and other major aircraft builders. When he sold the company 43 years later, Swift-Cor employed 300 in greater Los Angeles and Wichita and was also making most of the parts for mainframe computers.

Since retiring in 2000, Scriba has devoted his life to philanthropy through the Ralph Scriba Family Foundation and Scriba Enterprises. His wife of more than 60 years is the former Loraine Jablonski of Ladd.

to thousands of area students at DePue grade school (1950-52), LaSalle-Peru Township High School (1952-1967), IVCC (1967-1987) and St. Bede Academy (1970s and ‘80s).

In a letter to the editor following Brolley’s 2010 death, former student Bill Liesse of Peoria wrote, “Ray Brolley achieved with me what must be the most satisfying thing that can be said about a teacher: an indelible impression.

Ray Brolley didn’t like, or even love literature. He was moved to tears on the 100th reading.”

The Tiskilwa Community Church will have a turkey dinner from 5 to 7 p.m.

Thursday, Nov. 19. The menu will include turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, vegetable, rolls, pie and drinks. The cost for the dinner is $8 for adults and $5 for children under 12. All are welcome to attend.

A bluegrass, gospel and country music jam will be from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, at the First Lutheran Church at 116 N. Pleasant St. in Princeton. Jams will continue the third Friday of each month. Players and listeners are welcome. Snacks and soft drinks available.

The eighth annual Northern Illinois Model Train Fair and Farm Toy Show will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, at the Bureau County Fairgrounds, 811 W. Peru St. in Princeton. There will

The First Lutheran Church in Princeton will host its third annual Christmas Carols Sing-Along at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6. The event is an old-fashioned sing-along, where those in attendance will have the opportunity to sing traditional Christmas carols they know and love.

Organist Larry Petersen of Augustana College of Rock Island will provide the music, along with the River Bend Bronze, a bell choir with participants from Eastern Iowa and Northwestern Illinois. A fellowship time after the event will include refreshments.

The church, which is handicapped accessible, is located at 116 S. Pleasant St., Princeton. The public is invited. There is no fee

to attend, and no offering will be taken. Rather, this is the church’s gift to the community.

The Perry Memorial Hospital Auxiliary will host a tour of homes from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6. All tours begin and end at the Bureau County Metro Center in Princeton. Mistole Players to present ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ KEWANEE — Remember the good old days of radio — when people had to use their imaginations — when the mind was a stage? Those days are back — only better! See and hear “It’s a Wonderful Life” radio play written by Joe Landry as performed by Kewanee’s own Mistletoe Players.

Holiday magic at Brookfield Zoo BROOKFIELD — It’s that time of year for festive lights and cheer at Brookfield Zoo’s Holiday Magic, presented by ComEd and Meijer. For 12 evenings, guests can enjoy Chicagoland’s largest lights festival, featuring more than 1 million twinkling LED lights illuminating the zoo’s walkways, the new Polar Lights, nearly 550 trees decorated by local community organizations and corporations, singing to the animals, professional ice-carving demonstrations, Zoo Chats, photos opportunities with animals, live entertainment, a 41-foot talking tree, a model railroad display and so much more!

The 34th annual Holiday Magic will take place on Saturdays and Sundays, Dec. 5-6, 12-13, 19-20 and 26-27, plus Dec. 28-31, from 4 to 9p.m.

The holiday festivities begin with an opening ceremony at 5 p.m. on Dec. 5 on the north plaza near the giant talking tree. The ceremony includes special guest Isaiah Grass, Chicago local pop singer, who will perform his song “Christmas with You.” On the zoo’s West Mall, guests can add their magic touch and color the sky with the new Polar Lights, an interactive light extravaganza with accompanying music. This first-time attraction to Holiday Magic allows zoo-goers to activate and control the color and shape of 30 moving lights. Also part of Polar Lights are four pixel-mapped LED trees that are capable of generating patterns with thousands of different colors.

On the opposite side of Roosevelt Fountain, the East Mall will feature TicTac-Snow, a new interac-

tive board light display that guests can play. To add to the holiday fun, polar bears and penguins replace X’s and O’s.

The holiday celebration would not be complete without a visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus (through Dec. 20). They will be available for photo opportunities and to hear everyone’s wish list in the Underwater Viewing Gallery at Seven Seas.

Many of the zoo’s animal exhibits will remain open until 8 p.m. during Holiday Magic, including Hamill Family Wild Encounters (parakeet habitat will be closed), Tropic World, The Living Coast, Big Cats, Great Bear Wilderness, The Fragile Kingdom, The Swamp, Feathers and Scales, Birds and Reptiles, and Hamill Family Play Zoo. There will also be a 6 p.m. Dolphins In Action each night. Additionally, guests can join carolers to sing seasonal songs to the big cats, bear and reindeer, and can learn about their favorite animals from animal care staff at special Zoo Chats held throughout each evening.

At the Holly Jolly Theater, guests can warm up and enjoy live entertainment that will take place each night between 5 and 9 p.m. There will also be magicians, a model railroad display, costumed characters and professional ice carvers, who will create frozen works of art from giant blocks of ice. Plus, the exterior of the Swamp exhibit will be illuminated each evening with the Holiday Lights Spectacular featuring a dazzling “video-mapping” light show.

Those who work up an appetite can stop by the zoo’s restaurants and food stands that will be open

during Holiday Magic for some standard menu items as well as holiday favorites, such as hot chocolate, cookies and cappuccino.

Zoo gift shops also will be open and will have plenty of gifts that are perfect for every member of the family, even the hard-to-shopfor ones.

Holiday Magic comes to a celebratory end on Thursday, Dec. 31, when everyone is invited to ring in the New Year at Brookfield Zoo’s Zoo Year’s Eve celebration. A DJ will have the Holly Jolly Theater rockin’ and rollin’ with music, fun games, party favors, prizes and more beginning at 6 p.m. and culminating with an early countdown at 8 p.m.

Families with younger children can head to Hamill Family Play Zoo, where kids can make noisemakers and also enjoy an early kid-friendly countdown at 8 p.m.

Pumpkin pie is always a standard dessert at our Thanksgiving dinner, but pumpkin has so many other uses. Besides being good for you, it brings the fall flavor and aroma into your home too. Why not try some of these pumpkin recipes for Thanksgiving dinner ... or anytime.

Pumpkin Chocolate Brownies 1 1/4 cups semisweet chocolate morsels 1 cup unsalted butter, cut into pieces 3 1-ounce unsweetened chocolate baking squares, chopped 3 large eggs 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons granulated sugar 2 tablespoons cold brewed coffee 1 tablespoon vanilla Parchment paper 2/3 cup all-purpose flour 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt, divided 1 15-ounce can pumpkin 3 large eggs 1/2 cup heavy cream 1/3 cup firmly packed light brown sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice Preheat oven to 350°. Pour water to a depth of one inch in the bottom of a double boiler over medium heat; bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer. Place chocolate morsels, unsalted butter and baking squares in top of double boiler over simmering water. Cook, stirring occasionally, 5 to 6 minutes or until melted. Remove from heat; cool 10 minutes.

Next, whisk together 3 eggs, sugar, coffee and vanilla in a large bowl. Gradually whisk warm chocolate mixture into egg mixture; cool 10 minutes.

Grease a 13-by-9-inch baking pan with butter. Line bottom and sides of pan with parchment paper, allowing 2 to 3 inches to extend over sides. Grease (with butter) and flour parchment paper.

Sift flour, baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a bowl. Whisk into chocolate mixture. Pour batter into prepared pan, reserving 2/3 cup.

Whisk together pumpkin, 3 eggs, heavy cream, brown sugar, pumpkin pie spice and remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt; pour over brownie batter in pan. Top with reserved brownie batter and swirl batter gently three times in one direction and three times in the opposite direction with a knife or the end of a wooden spoon.

Bake at 350° for 45 to 50 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out with a few moist crumbs. Cool completely on a wire rack. Lift brownies from pan, using parchment paper sides as handles.

Gently remove parchment paper, and cut brownies into 24 squares.

Pecan Pumpkin Bread 1 1/2 cups chopped pecans 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 3 cups granulated sugar 1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1 15-ounce can pumpkin 1 cup canola oil (I use vegetable oil) 4 large eggs 2/3 cup water Preheat oven to 350°. Bake pecans in a single layer in a shallow pan 8 to 10 minutes or until toasted and fragrant, stirring halfway through. Stir together flour, sugar, pumpkin pie spice, baking soda and salt in a large bowl, and make a well in center of mixture.

Whisk together pumpkin, canola oil, eggs and water; add to dry ingredients, stirring just until moistened. Stir in pecans. Spoon batter into 2 greased and floured 9-by-5-inch loaf pans. Bake at 350° for 1 hour to 1 hour and 10 minutes or until a long wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pans on a wire rack 10 minutes. Remove from pans to wire rack, and cool completely before slicing.

Coconut Pumpkin Chiffon Pie 1/2 cup milk 2 envelopes unflavored gelatin 1 15-ounce can pumpkin 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon table salt 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger 4 large pasteurized eggs, separated 1 cup plus 3 tablespoons sugar, divided 1 1/4 cups sweetened shredded coconut, divided 1 cup graham cracker crumbs 5 tablespoons butter, melted 2 cups heavy cream 2 teaspoons vanilla Preheat oven to 350°. Whisk together milk and gelatin in a 3-quart saucepan; let stand one minute. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, for 1 minute or until gelatin dissolves. Stir in pumpkin, cinnamon, salt, nutmeg, ginger, egg yolks and 1/2 cup sugar. Cook, stirring constantly, 5 to 7 minutes or until slightly thickened. (Do not boil.) Transfer to a bowl; chill 40 minutes or to room temperature, stirring halfway through.

Meanwhile, place coconut in a single layer on a baking sheet, and bake at 350° for 8 to 10 minutes or until golden, stirring occasionally.

Stir together graham cracker crumbs, butter, 1 tablespoon sugar and 1 cup

coconut. Press mixture into a 10-inch pie plate. Freeze 10 minutes or until ready to use.

Beat egg whites at high speed with a heavy-duty electric stand mixer, using whisk attachment, 8 minutes or until soft peaks form. Add 1/4 cup sugar and beat 2 to 3 minutes or until stiff peaks form. Gradually fold egg whites into pumpkin mixture.

Pour into crust. Chill 2 hours or until set.

Beat cream and vanilla at medium speed 1 to 2 minutes or until soft peaks form.

Add remaining 6 tablespoons sugar, and beat 1 to 2 minutes or until stiff peaks form. (I omitted this step and just used Cool Whip instead.) Top pie with cream mixture and remaining 1/4 cup coconut.

Serve immediately.

Pumpkin Streusel Muffins 3/4 cup butter, softened 1 8-ounce package cream cheese, softened 1 cup granulated sugar 1 cup firmly packed light brown sugar 2 large eggs 3 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon table salt 1 1/2 cups canned pumpkin 1/2 cup toasted chopped pecans 1/2 cup sweetened dried cranberries (I use Craisins) 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract Pumpkin pie streusel (recipe follows) Preheat oven to 350°. until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating just until blended after each addition.

Stir together flour, pumpkin pie spice, baking powder, baking soda and salt; gradually add to butter mixture, beating at low speed. Stir in pumpkin, pecans, cranberries and vanilla extract.

Spoon batter into two lightly greased 12-cup muffin pans, filling two-thirds full. Sprinkle with Pumpkin Pie Streusel.

Bake at 350° for 25 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pans on wire racks five minutes; remove from pans to wire racks, and cool 20 minutes.

What they’ll say about me at school after I graduate: She was a hard worker in sports and in school.

Most embarrassing moment: At the Princeton Invite for golf, my group had just teed off on a hole and were walking to our golf balls. Both of my coaches were talking to me as I started to walk down a slight hill. The night before the meet, it had down poured and had continued to rain early into the morning. So, the ground being very wet, my feet slipped right out from underneath me as I was walking down the hill and I fell right on my butt, with my golf clubs on my back, right in front of my coaches.

I just sat there for a minute and couldn’t help but laugh. I had mud all over my butt and I’m very glad that I was wearing black shorts that day instead of khakis!

Most unforgettable moment: Getting out of regionals and playing sectionals at my home course my senior year of golf.

Ultimate sports fantasy: Playing in the WNBA or on the LPGA tour.

What I would like to do in life: I’m still undecided but I’m leaning toward something along the lines of physical therapy or sports training.

Play with the Pros PEKIN — The Christian Center’s Play with the Pros Baseball Clinic on Saturday, Dec. 19, at the Avanti’s Dome in Pekin will include instruction from World Series champ Ben Zobrist and Zach McAllister of the Cleveland Indians.

Zobrist, who is from Eureka, and McAllister (Chillicothe) are scheduled to be joined by Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Pat Venditte, and area minor league players.

Cost is $110, which includes a shirt, hat, goodie bag and photo with the pros.

The clinic runs from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for ages 8-10, and 1 to 5:30 p.m. for ages 11-14. There are 60 spots in season.

Indoor golf

PRINCETON — Indoor golf is underway at the Bureau County Metro Center, using the OptiShot golf simulator, which allows golfers to practice their swings while playing some of the world’s best courses. SPRING VALLEY — The Spring Valley Walleye Club will have its 21st annual Members Only fishing tournament Saturday, Nov. 28. It starts at Barto Landing, The entry fee is now $160.

First prize will be $750, second $350, and third will be $250. After the weigh-in, there will be free food and drinks.

Rules and regulations for the event are: All boats must leave from and return to Barto Landing.

Five fish limit per team.

Fourteen-inch minimum length.

No dead fish will be weighed.

Scale house will open at noon.

Fishing time will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Indoor soccer

Turkey Trot

OGLESBY — The 37th Oglesby 3-Mile Turkey Trot will be Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 26. The race will start at 9 a.m. at Holy Family School. Pre-registration is $20 and $25 race day. Entry fee is $10 for ages 13 and under.

Each person bringing a non-perishable food donation for the Illinois Food Pantry will receive a free gift.
