Honoring our veterans Veterans Day is Friday, Nov. 11 — a day set aside each November to honor our local men and women who have served in the United States military. It is a day to remember, to offer our thanks and to salute those who have served, protected and preserved all we hold most dear.

Originally, Veterans Day was called Armistice Day, and the date was selected to commemorate the signing of the armistice with Germany during World War 1, which was signed on Nov. 11, 1918.

Initially the focus of Armistice Day was on the veterans of World War I, however the day was always meant to honor all veterans of foreign wars. Throughout the years, World War I veterans passed away, and the veterans of World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and all the other battles fought by U.S. military personnel were included, and the name of the holiday was changed to Veterans Day. Today, Veterans Day honors all those who ever served in the U.S. Armed Forces rather than just those who fought in a war.

This Friday, a host of towns, villages, schools and other organizations will honor our all veterans with ceremonies, school assemblies and more. Whether you attend on or more of those events or simply choose to fly your U.S. flag to honor our veterans, we hope you will take some time to reflect, remember and offer your sincere thanks to our nations brave.

One stone at a time Gary Johnson is helping to save Oakland Cemetery’s history

PRINCETON — The names most closely associated with Princeton’s historical past can be found among the brightly colored leaves falling on the grounds of Oakland Cemetery. Too often though, those leaves are helping to bury the very history the cemetery is supposed to preserve. For the past two years, however, Princeton resident Gary Johnson has taken responsibility for saving this local history.

During those two years, Johnson has personally restored 1,435 tombstones, and he’s been financing this large project with his own money, saying, “After my mother passed away, it all just fell together. I wanted the inheritance from my parents to be spent on something worthwhile in their memory.”

When he was ready to begin genealogical research on his father’s side of the family, who have been in Princeton for 100 years, Johnson joined the Bureau County Genealogical Society.

“In one of the first newsletters I got, I saw they were going to have a program about restoring cemeteries. It was really interesting, I went to that and then also went to a workshop. In order to do this legally, you have to be certified by the state. I’m now one of three people in the county to be certified,” Johnson said.

When Oakland’s stones fall, they don’t take long to disappear. Johnson said one inch of soil on top of a fallen stone represents 10 years. He’s found and restored several with 5 inches, meaning those rescued and often broken stones haven’t been seen in 50 years.

Johnson said, “The cemetery isn’t responsible for the stones; it’s up to the families, but a lot of people here have no family.”

The average time to restore and reset a stone is roughly one hour with two men, but some have taken up to a day. Johnson has received help with this restoration work from Steve Wempe and Austin Sproston.

Oakland Cemetery began in 1836 with four acres. It’s now far more than 100 acres and is the final resting place for approximately 14,000. The cemetery’s namesake, the large oak trees towering throughout the grounds, are partly responsible for the damage to the stones.

“There’s at least 50 trees that still need to come down.

When they fall, they can cause a lot of damage. There are still 500 stones that need to be restored. There’s so many to work on they’ve even brought in restoration groups to study this cemetery,” Johnson said.

Gary Johnson has personally taken on the challenge of locating and restoring Oakland Cemetery’s broken and buried tombstones. He’s completed work on 1,435 and says there are still 500 to go. To help secure the long-term care of Oakland, he’s helped with the creation of the Oakland Cemetery Preservation Fund.

He’s also noticed the fence surrounding Oakland is in need of help and said he’d like to see its restoration become a project for the Boy Scouts or American Legion.

In order to provide for the long-term care for Oakland’s tombstones, Johnson has joined with Pam Lange and Jackie Davis to create the Oakland Cemetery Preservation Fund. Their biggest challenge with this new endeavor is to raise awareness of the condition of the cemetery, as well as raising funds to continue restoration work.

Davis, foundation president, said, “We owe it to the citizens who made Princeton what it is today to maintain their legacy. Everyone deserves that respect. There’s so much history here.”

​PERU — In March 2014, Ottawa’s Peter Limberger shared his dream with a group of people at Illinois Valley Regional Airport in Peru. Limberger wanted to create a flying club and build an airplane.

Thus, the Starved Rock Flying Club was born.

Limberger’s driving force was to share his passion of flying with others and to make involvement in aviation affordable to both students and other community members.

Limberger said he had many reasons for creating the club.

“I want to show students that there are jobs to be had in the aviation field such as pilots, mechanics and with electronics,” Limberger said, smiling widely as he explained how students could be trained in these areas, while also having fun.

Another reason for creating the club was to showcase the airport which is located just off of Plank Road at 425 Ed Urban Drive in Peru.

“Many people just do not realize how fortunate we are to have a commercial airport in the Illinois Valley,” Limberger said. The airport has two, lighted, paved runways and three instrument approaches available. Several businesses have aircraft stationed there. Limberger believes the airport being conveniently located could trigger more economic development in the area.

Chuck Struder of the Illinois Valley Regional Airport allowed the club to hold its initial meetings at the airport and also supplied a corner hanger for the club to use while building the plane.

In late Spring of 2014, the club decided to purchase a Quicksilver Sport 2S kit, which is classified as an experimental air-

craft made of an aluminum frame. It has nylon wings, two seats, three wheels and sports an open cockpit. Limberger funded the project for the club. Kits cost between $25,000 to $32,000.

Limberger explained the term “experimental aircraft” is a legal term only — meaning it didn’t get built by someone with a certified mechanic’s license.

This type of experimental aircraft, the LSA (light sport aircraft) still must be certified by a certified inspector and must be flown only by licensed pilot. Limberger said, “It’s a highly-designed aircraft that is very safe to fly.”

Ken Pisarczyk, who coordinated the formation of the club and purchase of the experimental aircraft kit, said, “Over 40 people helped in this process with many of them being students.

Though the process took much longer than originally anticipated due to an enormous amount of paperwork, the hard work of this group finally was rewarded as the aircraft passed the inspection by an FFA

designated inspector on Saturday at the airport.

It was only fitting Limberger was able to be the first to fly the aircraft that was so lovingly built by the members of his club.

WYANET — Thursday, Nov. 10, 6:30 p.m., Susan Glassman MS Ed, Extension educator, Nutrition and Wellness, serving Bureau, LaSalle, Marshall and Putnam counties will present the nutrition class, Hearty Soups and Stews at the R.A. Sapp Library 2nd Thursday@ the Library program. She will be cooking up some comfort food for all in attendance to sample.

The class will include a Powerpoint presentation, some class materials, recipe books and the food demonstration. Of course, refreshments will be served after the class.

LAMOILLE — Therapy Thursdays is an ongoing program. Come and go between 1 and 4 p.m.

Materials will be furnished or people may bring their own.

The library will be participating in the Rebecca Caudill Book Choice Award for 2017. This program is open to children in fourth through eighth grades. The Rebecca Caudill group will meet at the library for fun talks, games and snacks, ending with a pizza party and voting in February 2017.

The library is also taking part in choosing the Abraham Lincoln High School Book Award. The program will be conducted in the same manner as the Rebecca Caudill program. If interested in joining either of these groups,

contact the library for a list of the nominated books.

DEPUE — On the second Tuesday of every month, the library hosts blood pressure and blood sugar screenings for free. The screenings are administered by St. Margaret’s Health.

The library board meetings are held on Mondays, except where noted, at 6 p.m. at the library. Meeting dates are: Nov. 14, December – no meeting, Jan. 9, 2017; Feb. 13, 2017; March 13, 2017; April 10, 2017; May 8, 2017; and June 12, 2017. All board meetings are open to the public.

TISKILWA — On the first Wednesday of each month at 4:30 p.m., the library’s book club for adults meets.

Every Thursday at 10:45 a.m., the library hosts a senior fitness class. Participants focus on balance, endurance, muscular strength, mental clarity and socialization.

Every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., the library hosts a yoga class, where participants enjoy camaraderie with others and are challenged mentally and physically. Cost is $5 per person.

BUREAU — The Leepertown Township Public Library is open from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday; and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Want to get rid of that overdue library fine?

So you forgot to return that library book on time. ... The result? You’ve accumulated a fine at your local library.

While you could go in and open your purse or your billfold, some area libraries are offering an opportunity to get rid of that library fine while helping out others in your own community.

From Nov. 7 through Nov. 19, the Food for Fines amnesty program offers those with library fines the chance to rid themselves of that late fee. All one has to do is bring in a canned or boxed non-perishable food donation to the library. Each donated food item pays $1 in library overdue fines.

According to a press release, local libraries participating in the effort include Princeton Public Library, the Richard A. Mautino Memorial Library in Spring Valley and Jacobs Library at Illinois Valley Community College in Oglesby; however, other area libraries may also be joining in the effort.

Those outside of Princeton and Spring Valley should call their local library for more details.

“It gives me a great feeling that we are coordinating this project through the local libraries,” Barb White, head librarian in Spring Valley, said. “What a wonderful opportunity for us to give back to other individuals (while) at the same time getting our items back at the library.”

Princeton Public Library Director Julie Wayland said it’s the Princeton library’s pleasure to be a part of the effort.

“The Princeton Public Library is pleased to join other area libraries in what has become an annual event. We realize the need for the Bureau County Food Pantry and other area food banks, and want to do our part to support their efforts,” Wayland said. “The library trustees and staff are appreciative and committed to helping our

community, especially over the upcoming holiday season.”

The libraries will take up to 25 non-perishable food items to erase $25 per overdue library/patron card. Food items must be presented at the circulation desks.

All food donations will then be presented to the area food pantries, which serves people in the local area.

“During the holiday time period, we often see an increase in the need in households, so Food for Fines helps us tremendously, By having the food donations, we get a variety of items we don’t normally get. It gives the clients something different,” said Vanessa Hoffeditz, community service coordinator for Tri-County Opportunities Council and the Bureau County Food Pantry.

Project Success Director Jan Martin, which sponsors the Hall Township Food Pantry said the Spring Valley facility is appreciative of the Food for Fines program since it clearly fills a gap ... on the food pantry shelves.

“Keeping shelves filled, well, that is difficult. This is where Food for Fines really helps,” Martin said, adding the pantry feeds about 1,000 people every month. “The donations are used to help restock our 37 shelves. This wide assortment of food items fills in empty spaces. We are most thankful.”

Most food pantries can use prepared foods like canned hams and other canned meats, Spaghetti-Os, canned pasta, canned fruits, soups, cereals and more.

Those wishing to donate a food item to get rid of an overdue fine should remember all food items should be in their original packages; outdated food or glass containers are not accepted. Donated food items are not accepted for lost or damaged books, replacement of library card or interlibrary loan fees — only for library fines.

It’s your turn ...

Gaming group at Festival 56 shows future may not be so digital

PRINCETON — Board games, as with many things these days, could justifiably be thought of as relics of the past, forgotten on a closet shelf while fiddling with a downloaded game on a phone. A group of local gamers has another idea though; they’ve started a popular board game group that’s highlighting the latest in game designs.

Meeting in the lobby of the Festival 56 building from 7 to 9:30 p.m. every Friday during which no theater performances are scheduled, the Princeton, Illinois Board Game Group has been attracting new players to their tables.

The events are free and open to the public, and each of the 10 prior meetings has seen an average of about 15 people.

The three tables set up in the lobby each host a different game, although sometimes the groups are joined for one larger game. To begin the evening, an intro game is played to familiarize players with rules and game mechanics.

Co-founder Ron McCutchan said, “The strange thing is we’ve had different first-time players at each event. If we could get everyone to come on the same night, we’d have a very large group.”

Throughout the summer, McCutchan and fellow co-founders Jim Gassen and Brandon and Emily Stover had all been independently talking about starting a game group. McCutchan, head of Youth Services at the Princeton Public Library, had started one there as a way to help draw junior high students to the book club, but it was the board game

events generating the most interest.

“We realized we were all interested in doing the same thing; so once we got the venue, we worked together to make it happen. We’ve had players from eighth-grade up to 80 years old,” Brandon said.

While there’s been talk of doing a retro-night with more classic board games, the group has been focused on introducing players to the new Eurostyle or designer games which have become increasingly popular worldwide. Surprisingly, it’s been millennials, the most plugged in generation, who have been driving the success of this new style of game play.

“It’s been fun introducing people to games they’ve never experienced before.

People hear ‘board games’ and think Monopoly or Parcheesi. It’s also been a great way to get more people to see the inside of the theater,” Gassen said.

While American-style games typically involve a lot of luck and conflict, Eurogames downplay luck and encourage more strategic play and are more likely to have economic themes. They’re also designed to keep all players in the game, as losing players are contrary to the social nature of game play.

Designed for international audiences, these games aren’t word based and usually don’t contain much text, other than the rules which strive to be simple and to help keep game play short.

Symbols are often used, reducing the amount of translation needed between different editions. Play tends to minimize or even eliminate verbal communication as a game element. As long as players know the rules, they can play

The Internet hasn’t replaced board games; instead, it’s exposed players to new games and helped them connect with other local players. It’s also helped designers, whose names are often featured on the cover of the box, to help raise funds to develop their newest ideas.

Players are welcome to bring their own games and a nice selection of other board games are also on hand at each event. Families are welcome; snacks are provided; and the lobby bar is open for cash. Annual toy drive held in Princeton PRINCETON — The Princeton Lions Club held its annual toy drive on Oct. 9 at Soldiers and Sailors Park in Princeton.

More than 120 cars cruised into downtown Princeton bringing toys and smiles.

Assisting for the event were Kim Frey of the Princeton Chamber of Commerce,

who designed the posters; Princeton Police Department Explorers and Malden Lions Club handled traffic; and BCR photo/Goldie Rapp Bureau County Sheriff’s deputies helped with coffee and hot chocolate. Princeton Lion Scott Bickett is the toy drive chairperson.

Princeton Public Library announces fundraiser PRINCETON — The Princeton Public Library is stepping away from its annual International Game Day Trivia Night Fundraiser. Instead they are throwing a New Year’s Eve Non-Event. A Non-Event imitates the same planning and execution as an event, but supporters stay at home. The concept is to save the contributors the time, effort and expense of attending yet another fundraiser.

The library is calling its “event” New Year’s Eve Save Your Cash Bash. Invitations will go out at the beginning of November with a self-addressed RSVP requesting a donation to “buy tickets” for the nonexistent party.

Since these “tickets” are really donations, anyone can give whether they receive an invitation or not.

The library wants to be clear in explaining

the premise so as to avoid confusion in the community when they receive an invitation or see it advertised. It is meant as an acknowledgment to our benefactors that we appreciate the fact that not everyone enjoys attending fundraisers, yet they still want to be supportive. This way, they can show their support from the comfort of their homes.

As a New Year’s Eve party, this NonEvent presents no conflict or juggling with other New Year’s Eve plans or puts pressure on anyone to come out if they prefer to stay home and watch the ball drop on TV. Because the event won’t happen, there are no concerns about dressing up, parking, babysitters, crowds, weather conditions, etc.

It is stress free!

Lions Pride Night

Santas on the Run 5K

LAMOILLE — The LaMoille/Ohio boys and girls basketball teams will have a “Lions Pride Night” at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at LaMoille High School. This will be a Midnight Madness event to get both communities excited about their boys’ and girls’ basketball teams. There will be scrimmages for both teams as well as a 3-point contest and a skills challenge.

SPRING VALLEY — The Santas on the Run 5K will be Saturday, Nov. 26, to benefit the Hall Township Food Pantry.

Registration will be from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the JFK School, 800 N. Richards St., Spring Valley. Race time is 10 a.m. from the JFK parking lot.

Entry fee is $25 postmarked by Nov. 16, $30 through and including race day.

Awards will be given to the overall top runners and top two finishers in each age group. Water stops will include cookies and holiday treats with hot chocolate after the race.

Kaiser-Kesseler Holiday Tournament PRINCETON — The 42nd annual Kaiser-Kesseler Holiday Tournament will be held at Logan Junior High School on Monday, Nov. 28, and Tuesday, Nov. 29.

This tournament consists of four eighthgrade boys basketball teams. Admission is: K-8 students and seniors 60 and older, $1; High school/adults $2.

The schedule is as follows: Nov. 28: Logan vs. Geneseo, 5 p.m., Dixon vs. Kewanee, 6 p.m.

Nov. 29: Third place game, 5 p.m., championship game, 6 p.m.

Bowling Boosters host 50/50 raffle

SPRING VALLEY — The Hall High School Bowling Boosters Organization (HBB) is holding a 50/50 raffle to support the Hall High School bowling team. The “Black Friday 50/50 Raffle” will be drawn on Saturday, Nov. 19, just in time for some holiday shopping.

Currently, the jackpot is at $1,300 and rising. Tickets are $5 each, and you need not be present to win. Send $5 per ticket with your name, address and phone number to: HBB Raffle, 419 W. St. Paul St., Spring Valley, IL 61362.

HBB is a newly-formed group to ensure the sport of bowling is continued at Hall High School. With tight budgets, some extra-curricular activities could be cut, so they hope to keep raising funds to keep this sport alive. Donations will be used to assist the bowling program with expenses such as tournament fees, equipment, travel, food and any other expenses deemed necessary the Hall High School budget can’t meet.

Princeton Park District Update

PRINCETON — Registration is underway for the indoor adult soccer league sponsored by the Princeton Park District. Games will be held Sundays at 12:30 p.m. at the Bureau County Metro Center from Dec. 4 through Jan. 22. Cost is $200 per team.

Signups are also being held for the adult volleyball league. Roster and league fees are due by Dec. 4. League play starts Dec. 13 with games held on Tuesdays beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The youth dodgeball league is underway at the Bureau County Metro Center.

Games are held Fridays with K-2 starting at 5 p.m. and grades 3-5 at 5:45 p.m.

The youth basketball league is being held Saturdays at the Met starting at 9 a.m.
