Saluting our veterans on Nov. 11 In honor of all who served their country in the military, Veterans Day activities are planned in several communities across the Illinois Valley on Saturday.

For example, in Princeton, the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 125 will participate in the Veterans Day ceremonies at Veterans Park on South Main Street across from the fire department.

Ladies of the Unit are asked to be at the park by 10 a.m. to get lined up and get their flags. The honor guard will present a 21-gun salute during the ceremonies in honor of all who served in the Armed Forces. A small reception will be held at the Legion Hall at 1549 W. Peru St. following the ceremonies. ALA Unit 125 will present a wreath in honor of all veterans.

Among area schools planning Veterans Day programs are Bureau Valley (Buda) at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Hall High School on Friday morning, Ladd Grade School at 10:30 a.m. Friday, and Logan Junior High School in Princeton and Bureau Valley (Wyanet), both at 1:30 p.m. Friday.

BVHS will present ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ Nov. 10-11 MANLIUS — At 7 p.m.

Friday, Nov. 10, and Saturday, Nov. 11, fairies will invade the Bureau Valley High School auditorium when BVHS drama department presents “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” by William Shakespeare.

This isn’t your traditional Shakespearean performance. The story remains the same: In Athens, Duke Theseus and his fiance, Hip-

polyta, are getting ready for their impending nuptials. They are interrupted by Egeus, who believes her daughter, Hermia, should marry Demetrius, but Hermia is in love with Lysander. The Duke gives Hermia four days to make her decision and mentions that if she refuses to follow her mother’s wishes, she will either be exiled, condemned to death or sent

to a nunnery. Hermia and Lysander decide to run away together to the forest, followed closely Demetrius, and his own suitor, Helena.

Meanwhile, the king of the fairies, Oberon, and the queen of the fairies, Titania, are in a fight. Oberon wants to get back at his queen by playing a trick on her; he decides to place a potion on her eyes that will make her fall in love with the first

thing she sees. As he prepares the prank, he sees the unrequited love between Demetrius and Helena, and sends his henchman, Puck, to cast a love spell on Demetrius so that he will fall in love with Helena.

However, Puck messes up the assignment and places the spell on Lysander, causing Lysander to fall in love with Helena.

Oberon then places the

potion on Titania’s eyes, and she falls in love with a poor sap whose head has been changed into that of a donkey. More madness and chaos ensue, but all is resolved in the end as everyone celebrates the happy marriage of Theseus and Hippolyta.

BVHS will set its production at “Athens Prep School”, where Helena, Demetrius, Hermia and

Lysander are students. Theseus is the school principal, and other characters play the school employees. The fairies make up a motley crew of ‘80s rock stars, and ‘70s and ‘80s music sets the score for this rockin’ Shakespearean performance.

Tickets are $5 at the door, or $1 with a student ID. Bureau Valley High School is located at 9068 2125 North Ave. Manlius.

Panel talks ‘Money in Politics’ at Nov. 9 program

IVCC will host fall open house Nov. 15 OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College’s fall open house is set for 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Wednesday, Nov. 15.

This event is essential for any students considering attending IVCC. Deans and faculty members from more than 20 majors will lead tours and speak to students and parents about their programs and student support services will discuss the resources available to students including financial aid, scholarships, learning technologies, disability services and transfer services.

Aseret Loveland, assistant director of admissions, records and transfer services, said, “Open House is a great opportu-

nity for prospective students to meet with faculty to talk about classes and experiences here at IVCC, internships available and career and transfer opportunities once they graduate.

“Whether students are looking at a certificate or applied degree so they can get straight to work, or they want to explore transferring to Northern Illinois, Illinois State, or anywhere else, we will have experts at the open house to help them figure things out,” she added.

PRINCETON — Nick Young, veteran CBS Radio News broadcaster and WBBM news anchor, will moderate a panel discussion, “Money in Politics: The Effect on Democracy,” at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 9, at the Princeton Public Library, 698 E. Peru Street.

Panel participants will be Amanda Cook Fesperman, professor of political science and history at Illinois Valley Community College; David Melton, senior adviser, Illinois Campaign for Political Reform; and Jim Nowlan, statewide newspaper columnist and author of

several books on Illinois politics and reform. Voices from the Prairie, a local grassroots citizens’ organization that promotes the importance of a well-informed citizenry, is the sponsor of the event.

The program is intended to engage an audience across the political spectrum in grappling with the influence of money in state and national politics.

“When electoral races are largely self-funded by billionaire candidates or by powerful lobbyist groups,” said Sarah Cooper, one of the program organizers, “money talks.

How much influence this

has on democracy and the public good is an important question that the panel will address.”

The panel will provide a historical perspective on the role of money in American politics and assess the situation today. There will be ample time for questions from the audience.

Coincidentally, the panel falls a day after the oneyear anniversary of the 2016 U.S. elections. As Illinois voters look to the 2018 and 2020 elections, now is a good time to consider what’s at stake and where money should or should not influence the practice of American democracy.

University graduate stops in town on cross-country walk; goal is to create ‘listening poems’

BY DAVE COOK dcook@bcrnews.com PRINCETON — As we rush in our vehicles from place to place, there’s much we can miss. Proving that sometimes it’s better to move slowly, a recent visitor to Princeton has not only learned something about herself, but also about those living in the Midwest.

Margaret Wright, 23, a lifelong resident of New Jersey, as well as a recent graduate of Princeton University, is on a solitary trek across the United States as part of her Martin A. Dale ’53 Fellowship grant project.

“Before I started, I was scared and couldn’t imagine what it would be like. I had no idea of what to expect,” Wright said when asked how the actual journey has compared to what she’d anticipated.

Wright, who majored in English and also focused on creative writing and poetry, was awarded a $35,000 grant. She’s spending the year after her graduation, according to the fellowship, on “an independent project of extraordinary merit that will widen the recipient’s experience of the world and significantly enhance the recipient’s growth and intellectual development.”

She’ll be conducting interviews with those she meets along the way and will be using them to create “listening poems,” or poems composed entirely of words and phrases spo-

While in Princeton, she was the guest of Steve and Laurie Bonucci. Wright was put in contact with them through a friend of the Bonuccis who uses the website warmshowers. org, a site that helps bicyclists on long journeys to

find safe places to sleep, bathe and eat.

She began her journey on Aug. 6 and expects to end it sometime in June in a park north of San Francisco. With cold weather well on its way, Wright said she’ll be rerouting her path south of the Rockies

to avoid a path no one would wish to walk in the winter.

“Not knowing what to expect has turned out to be the most enjoyable part. Every day and every town is different, but I’ve learned people have an incredible capacity for generosity,” Wright said.

Wright said she covers roughly 20 miles a day on foot, but admitted she has taken the occasional short bus or car ride. After accepting the invitation to spend an extra night with the Bonuccis to celebrate Halloween, Wright was given a ride to Annawan, her next destination.

From there, Wright planned to walk to Geneseo and then on to the Quad Cities, where her father planned to join her for a leg of the journey.

She pushes her belongings in a jogging stroller and has had to occasionally ask strangers for permission to pitch her tent in their yards.

“Overall, I’ve gotten good responses, but with varying levels of wariness.

It’s another example of how generous people are.

Even after I tell people my trip is well funded, they still want to feed me and give me money to help me along,” she said.

“When I got here, it had just turned cold. It’s been so beautiful with all of the leaves falling and the exposed trees. One thing I’ve noticed since entering what you’d call the ‘Corn Belt’ is how generous everyone is here, even more so than the other places I’ve been. Everyone wants to give me things to help,” she said.

Steve Bonucci also treated her to her first ride in a combine.

“That was fun, it’s so powerful. It’s impressive someone designed a machine that does that and does it all so precisely,” Wright said.

She said she’s undecided as to what her future will bring once she completes her journey and poetry project, but added she has a general path charted.

“It will hopefully be something at the intersection of writing and poetry. I’d also like to be involved with the issues of the country and possibly teaching, as well,” she said.

Though Wright’s future is unknown, it’s comforting to know that before she walked off into the western horizon, she found the strangers of Princeton and the Illinois Valley to be friendly, generous and family-oriented.

Wright typically tries to interview one person from each town she visits and said although our country is currently deeply divided, many things are the same no matter where you’re from or what you believe.

Whether people are from a small town or a big city, Wright has learned everyone enjoys talking about their families and children, as well as their faith, hopes, dreams and fears.

“It’s been wonderful to hear so many people, from all walks of life, speak so lovingly about their families and children and how they work to support and provide opportunities for them,” she said.

Her travels have also changed her idea of what a small town is, saying that while she’d always thought the town she was from was small, she’s now seen the difference.

“Standing in a smalltown store and seeing how everyone who walked through the door was greeted by name and could begin talking with everyone else in the store was really nice. I’d never experienced anything like that before,” she said.

PRINCETON — Saturday, Nov. 11, 10:30 a.m., Tim Pletkovich will present a program on his book, “Nuns, Nazism and Notre Dame.�

The book examines the early life of Gerald A. O’Reilly, who was raised in Brooklyn during the 1920s and ‘30s. His story takes us from the alleys of Brooklyn to the hallways of Notre Dame during their championship years, to the innermost thoughts of an elite 10th Mountain Division soldier and the battle horrors of World War II in the Apennine Mountains. O’Reilly is the last surviving member of his company.

Pletkovich completed his graduate program at Illinois State University where he developed an interest in researching primary source documents relating to social issues in the post-Civil War America. Articles resulting from his original research have been published in numerous historical publications. “Nuns, Nazis, and Notre Dame� is his second book.

Freedom 5K

SPRINGFIELD – Hunters in Illinois may use crossbows during archery hunting seasons, including the Illinois archery deer season and the Illinois fall turkey archery season.

Gov. Bruce Rauner signed into law House Bill 2893, which amended the Illinois Wildlife Code to repeal restrictions on the use of crossbows during archery hunting seasons in Illinois.

Illinois law previously allowed the use of crossbows for archery hunting by persons age 62 or older, and those persons with disabilities who qualified for a crossbow permit issued by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR). In addition, the previous law allowed certain youth hunters to use crossbows, and allowed all archery hunters to use crossbows beginning the Monday after the second firearm deer season.

The 2017-18 season dates for archery deer and fall turkey archery hunting in Illinois are Oct. 1, through Jan. 14, 2018. Archery seasons will be closed Nov. 17-19 and Nov. 30-Dec. 3 during the firearm deer season in those counties open to firearm deer hunting.

DIXON — The Sauk Valley Community College Student Veterans Organization invites everyone to the Freedom 5K Run Walk on Veterans Day, Saturday, Nov. 11, on the Sauk campus. The event will be held rain or shine.

Check-in time is 9 a.m. and the race starts at 10 a.m. The registration fee is $25 if received by Nov. 1, $30 if received after Nov. 1. Registrations received by Nov. 1 are guaranteed a free Freedom 5K shirt.

Local rising star Drew Dawson will sing the national anthem and all proceeds support the Sauk Student Veterans Organization.

Walkers are encouraged, but strollers and non-service animals are prohibited on the racecourse.
