Vol. 9 No. 16
Honoring our nation’s veterans An official U.S. holiday, Veterans Day honors people who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Always observed on Nov. 11, it coincides with other holidays such as Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other parts of the world, which also marks the end of World War I, since major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. U.S. President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed Armistice Day for Nov. 11, 1919. Today, cities, towns and villages across the country pay tribute to area veterans with a host of activities — some fun, some solemn, but all organized to thank our area veterans who have given of themselves for our country. It is also a time to remember, reflect and applaud our area veterans for the commitment, their bravery and in some cases, their ultimate sacrifice. A list of some Veterans Day events in the area appears on Page 5. IV Scene file photo
