Honoring our nation’s veterans An official U.S. holiday, Veterans Day honors people who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Always observed on Nov. 11, it coincides with other holidays such as Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other parts of the world, which also marks the end of World War I, since major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect.

U.S. President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed Armistice Day for Nov. 11, 1919. Today, cities, towns and villages across the country pay tribute to area veterans with a host of activities — some fun, some solemn, but all organized to thank our area veterans who have given of themselves for our country. It is also a time to remember, reflect and applaud our area veterans for the commitment, their bravery and in some cases, their ultimate sacrifice. A list of some Veterans Day events in the area appears on Page 5.

Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives open at the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago Exhibit set to close Jan. 4 CHICAGO — Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives, presented by D23: The Official Disney Fan Club, an exhibition which encompasses more than 300 artifacts from nine decades of Disney history, is open at the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago (MSI).

The exhibit showcases the creative accomplishments and innovations of one of Chicago’s native sons, Walt Disney, and the ongoing legacy of the company that bears his name. From Mickey Mouse to Captain Jack Sparrow, the exhibition features many artifacts from Disney’s rich history which have not been widely seen by the public — including drawings; props; costumes; artwork from classic Disney animated films, theme park attractions, TV shows and live-action films; plus items from contemporary Disney milestones. This exhibit will run at MSI through Jan. 4, 2015 and is presented by Walgreens.

Funds raised support Make-A-Wish of Illinois OTTAWA — If you’ve never jumped into the frigid waters of the Illinois River in the middle of the winter, Heritage Harbor Ottawa and Quest Watersports can help change that.

In its fourth year, the Penguin Plunge challenges hundreds of brave jumpers to jump together and make wishes come true for children facing life-threatening medical conditions. It’s a great way for individuals, organizations and businesses to get involved in supporting Make-A-Wish of Illinois. All funds raised go toward granting children wishes in LaSalle County and its surrounding areas. Last year more than $72,000 was raised grant-

This exhibit is not included in Museum Entry and will require an additional timed-entry ticket, which is $9 for adults and seniors and $7 for children ages 3-11.

Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White is urging students in Grades 4-12 to enter the 2015 Letters About Literature contest, a national reading and writing competition sponsored by the Illinois Center for the Book.

Letters About Literature invites students to read a book of their choice and write a letter to the author about how the book changed their life or view of the world.

There are three levels of participation: Level I for Grades 4-6; Level II for Grades

7-8; and Level III for Grades 9-12. One Illinois winner will be selected for each level and receive a $200 cash award. The state winners letters will be forwarded for national judging.

This Week The Perry Memorial Hospital Auxiliary will sponsor the annual Candy Cane from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, in the north and south lobbies of the hospital. The event will include gifts, a cookie sale, pecans, black walnuts, cookbooks, Mary Kay products and more in the north lobby. Complimentary refreshments, employees’ handmade items and the gift shop will be in the south lobby. Monday, Nov. 10, the Monday Night Movie will begin at 6:30 p.m. and feature the allied army in the last days of WW II, who are desperately searching for a bridgehead across the impenetrable Rhine River, in order to launch a major assault into the center of Germany. This is a true story of the battle for this last bridgehead, from both the German and American perspective.

Tuesday, Nov. 11, Wayne Sapp will present his historical fiction novel, “Arctic Lions,” at 6:30 p.m. Born and raised in Wyanet and currently living in Davenport, Sapp combines mystery and romance with real life information about the effects of the Exxon oil spill on the Stellar sea lions. Wednesday, Nov. 12, Chicks with Sticks, a knitting and crochet group, will meet at 6:30 p.m. near the periodicals section. Newcomers are always welcome. Also Wednesday, the Widmark Wednesday Movie will begin at 6:30 p.m. and feature a western town that holds many secrets, and the marshal knows them all. The town wants to get rid of him, but he will not leave. The town is determined to get rid of him one way or the other. Rated PG. Thursday, Nov. 13, the Friends of the Princeton Public Library Book Club will meet at 4 p.m. and discuss “The True Story of Hansel and Gretel” by Louise Murphy. Everyone is invited to join in the discussion. Also Thursday, a regency dance night will be held at 6:30 p.m.

Veterans Day programs Area organizations and schools plan events to honor those who have served our country LaMoille Lions Club The LaMoille Lions Club will hold its regularly scheduled November breakfast from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9, at the LaMoille Lions community building, 308 Howard St., LaMoille.

The breakfast includes pancakes, eggs, sausage, ham, toast, milk, orange juice, coffee and applesauce. The breakfast will honor veterans. The cost is $6 for adults, $4 for children ages 5-10 and free to children under 4 years old and veterans.

Princeton Elementary School Princeton Elementary School District will host its annual Veterans Day program Nov. 10 at Logan Junior High School. Breakfast will be served at 8 a.m., and the ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. All those in the military, past and present, are invited to attend.

Invitations were sent home with all PES students and are also available at Logan Junior High School and the VFW.

Princeton High School First Class from Princeton High School will host its annual Veterans Day breakfast at 7 a.m. Nov. 11 in the cafeteria. Local veterans and their families are invited to attend the breakfast. A program will begin at 7:30 a.m. followed by a ceremony outside at the flag pole at 7:40 a.m. The community is invited to attend the program and flag pole ceremony.

Bureau Valley High School The Bureau Valley High School Student Council will host the 16th annual Veterans Day assembly at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 11.

Dale Maddy, veteran and author of “Million Dollar Experience,” will be the keynote speaker. In addition to musical performances by the school ensembles, there will be a multi-media presentation and a reception for veterans in the school commons. The assembly is free and open to the public.

Veterans Day history In 1921, an unknown World War I American soldier was buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Similar ceremonies occurred earlier in England and France, where an unknown soldier was buried in each nation’s highest place of honor. These memorial gestures all took place on Nov. 11, giving universal recognition to the celebrated ending of World War I fighting at 11 a.m. Nov. 11, 1918. The day became known as Armistice Day. Armistice Day officially received its name in America in 1926 through a Congressional resolution. It became a national holiday 12 years later by similar Congressional action. If the idealistic hope had been realized that World War I was “the War to end all wars,” Nov. 11 might still be called Armistice Day. But only a few years after the holiday was proclaimed, war broke out in Europe again.

The first celebration using the term Veterans Day occurred in Birmingham, Ala. in 1947.

Raymond Weeks, a World War II veteran, organized “National Veterans Day,” which included a parade and other festivities to honor all veterans.

The event was held on Nov. 11.

Later U.S. Rep. Edward Rees of Kansas proposed a bill which would change Armistice Day to Veterans Day. In 1954, Congress passed the bill and President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed it proclaiming Nov. 11 as Veterans Day. A law passed in 1968 changed the national commemoration of Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October. It soon became apparent that Nov. 11 was a date of historic significance to many American. Therefore, in 1978 Congress returned the observance to its traditional date.

‘Five Days Left’ Grandma was right.

Darn it.

Every year, when November rolled around and you longed for the holidays, she told you not to wish your life away.

Time moved fast enough, she said, and it went faster the older you get.

Terri Back then, Schlichenmeyer a week lasted forever; today, you blink and where did it go? And in the new novel “Five Days Left” by Julie Lawson Timmer, even that’s not enough time.

Texas lawyer Mara Nichols always did her research.

It was something she prided herself on — until Huntington’s disease robbed her of her moods, memory and then her job.

What horrified her more than this loss of identity, though, was that, if her disease progressed as she understood it, she would lose control of her body more and more, little by little, until there was no Mara left. She’d be a burden to her husband, Tom, and an embarrassment for their daughter, Lakshmi — and that, to Mara, was unacceptable.

The Machine Shed’s Baked Potato Soup novel; she leaps out of the chute here with this keepsyou-guessing story of two people who have a finite time — real or imagined — to spend with those they love. It’s that guessing part, the will-she-won’tshe on Mara’s behalf, and the frustration from Scott that kept me turning pages well into the night. I also found myself wondering what I’d do if I was in their shoes, which led me to ignore my clock as I got wrapped up in their lives and this story — and if that’s not the mark of an exceptional novel, well, then I don’t know what is.

This is one of those winners that’ll be passed from reader to fan to book group and beyond. It’s a novel that people will buzz about awhile. Start it, and I think you’ll agree that “Five Days Left” is a right fine read.

2 1/2 pounds baby red potatoes, quartered 1/2 pound raw bacon, diced 1 jumbo yellow onion, diced 1/4 bunch celery, diced 1 quart water 2 ounces chicken base 1 quart milk 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon black pepper 1 1/2 sticks margarine 6 ounces flour 1 cup whipping cream 1/4 bunch chopped parsley Boil potatoes in water for 10 minutes.

Drain and set aside. In a large heavy pot, sauté bacon, onions and celery over medium high heat until celery is tender. Drain bacon grease and return bacon, onions and celery to pot. Add milk, water, chicken base, salt and pepper. Heat over medium high heat until very hot. Do not boil. In a heavy large sauce pan, melt margarine and add flour (called rue). Mix well and allow to bubble, stirring for 1 minute. While constantly stirring soup, add the flour margarine mixture slowly. Continue stirring soup until thick and creamy. Stir in potatoes, parsley, and cream. Serve while hot. Garnish with shredded Colby cheese, fried bacon bits, chopped green onions or all three.

Busy Day Stew 1 1/2 pounds boneless beef stew meat 2 tablespoons flour 2 tablespoons oil 1 1-ounce envelope onion soup mix 2 1/4 cups canned tomatoes with juice 4 carrots cut into chunks 1 1/2 cups frozen peas In a plastic food storage bag, shake beef with flour until meat is well coated.

In large pot heat oil on medium high heat. Add beef in batches and sauté until browned, removing as it browns. Return all beef cubes with accumulated juices to pot. Combine soup mix and 1 cup water. Pour over beef; bring to a boil.

Cover and reduce heat to medium low.

Cook slowly until beef is almost tender, 40 minutes to 1 hour, 15 minutes. Add tomatoes and carrots; bring to a boil over medium high heat. Reduce heat to medium low. Cover and simmer until vegetables and meat are tender, 25 to 30 minutes. Add peas during last 5 minutes

Stuffed Green Pepper Soup

By Betty Frazier 1 pound lean ground beef 1 small onion, diced 1 large green pepper, diced in bigger chunks 29 ounces diced tomatoes 1 10-ounce can tomato soup or sauce 1 14-ounce can chicken broth 2 cups cooked rice 1 tablespoon sugar 1 teaspoon garlic powder Salt and pepper to taste Brown ground beef, onions and green peppers; drain. Add tomatoes, tomato soup or sauce, chicken broth, rice, sugar, garlic powder, and salt and pepper. Simmer all together for 30 minutes.

Quick Potato Corn Chowder 1 medium onion, chopped 1 tablespoon olive oil 2 14 1/2-ounce cans chicken broth 3 large Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and cubed 1 14 1/2-ounce can whole kernel corn, drained 1 cup 2% milk, divided 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper 1/3 cup all-purpose flour In a large saucepan, cook and stir onion in oil over medium heat until tender. Add broth and potatoes, bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 20 to 15 minutes or until potatoes are tender. Stir in the corn, 1/2 cup milk, salt and pepper. In a small bowl, whisk flour and remaining milk, until smooth.

Stir into soup, return to a boil. Cook and stir for 2 to 3 minutes or until thickened.

Favorite sport and why: Wrestling, because it is a one-on-one sport. There are no ‘plays’ in the sport, just your instinct on what to do, and you don’t have to worry what’s best. It is also a great physical sport. To me, wrestling is more of a pride thing, very much, every step, every match.

Favorite food and where to get it: Lasagna, the grocery store.

Likes: Sports, going outside, hanging with friends, building stuff.

Dislikes: Strawberries, staying inside all day, injuries, making weight for wrestling.

PERU — The youth soccer league at the Illinois Valley YMCA Youth Basketball will be held Sunday afternoons through Dec. 22. Players may sign up individually or as a team. Cost is $40 for Y members and $50 for non-members.

Sports of all sports PRINCETON — Eleni Leigh, a former British soccer camp instructor, will teach children ages 3-8 on how to play a variety of sports at the Bureau County Metro Center. The class will be held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Session 2 will meet from Nov. 11-20.
