Fall is upon us in the Illinois Valley The people of the Illinois Valley aren’t the only ones who have noticed the shorter, cooler days. The autumn weather has prompted the trees to begin their annual, colorful process of preparing for the long cold winter ahead.

During winter, there isn’t enough light or water for photosynthesis. They will rest until spring, living off food they’ve stored throughout the days of summer. As they begin to shut down, the green chlorophyll disappears, leaving behind the different chemicals which cause the variations in colors depending on the tree.

The most vivid colors appear when late summer is dry, and autumn has bright sunny days and cool evenings. A fall with cloudy days and warm nights brings drab colors. An early frost will quickly end the beautiful display of colors.

The 31st annual Immaculate Conception Church fall luncheon will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, at the Ohio Catholic Church Hall. The event will include food, desserts and raffle. Tickets are $7 for adults, $4 for students and free for preschool.

The Logan Junior High School music parents will hold a cookout from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, in the Sullivan’s parking lot. The menu will include rib eye steak and butterfly pork chop sandwiches, brats, hot dogs, chips, water and soda. The Covered Bridge Chorus will present its annual show at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Christ Community Church, 1719 S. Euclid Ave., Princeton. The guest quartet is the “Convertibles” and a group from Princeton High School will also perform. This year show

is titled “Doo Wop meets Barbershop.” Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. To purchase tickets, contact any chorus member or Sullivan’s in Princeton.

The Princeton Moose Lodge will have a Halloween dance from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30. There will be dining from 5:30 to 8 p.m. and prizes for costumes.

Music will be provided by The Generics Goodies Band.

Illinois Valley Community College’s Support Staff Service Project will host a holiday art and craft fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, in and around rooms CTC 124 and 125 in the Peter Miller Community Technology Center. More than 30 artists and crafters will have items for sale and many have donated items for a raffle to benefit the Connie Dzierzynski Skerston Memorial Scholarship. The Buda American Legion’s annual veterans supper will be from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Buda Community Hall. Tickets are $7 for adults, $4 for ages 4-12, with ages 3 and under free. All veterans will eat for free. The meal will be a complete turkey dinner.

There will also be raffles.

The Princeton Public Library will open its doors at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, to get ready for a Game Night Tournament starting at 7 p.m. This year’s theme is board games and will include rounds of Heads up!, Concentration, Balderdash and Pictionary. The cost per person is $10 and teams will be made up of four to six people.

The tournament will consist of a four-round single elimination format with a consolation prize bracket for third place. A cash bar will be available with beer, wine, soda and coffee, with complimentary popcorn and pretzels.

Preregistration is required. This is the third annual fundraising event to celebrate International Game Day.

A flea market will be at Bureau County Fairgrounds in Princeton on Sunday, Nov. 15, with a huge garage sale. Dealers are welcome and there is both indoor and outdoor space available. ‘Mess: One Man’s Struggle to Clean Up His House and His Act’

A twin with a younger singleton brother, Yourgrau had spent his childhood helping his family to move; his father was a professor, and had worked his way around to a series of jobs. Yourgrau remembered his mother’s death with deep sorrow, but recalled his father as “domineering.” Still, getting rid of their “stuff” was an emotional struggle.

But, then again, getting rid of his own possessions wasn’t easy, either. Yourgrau sought counseling.

He read up on hoarding and its psychology, attended a twelve-step program, accepted help from several places, spoke with other hoarders and experts, procrastinated, and tried tackling the mess on his own.

Of his struggles, he says, “A man who cannot let go: that would be me.”

There are a lot of pages here in which “Mess” lives up to its title.

That disappointed me; I had such high hopes for this memoir, but a firsthalf hodgepodge makes author Barry Yourgrau’s story initially very hard to follow. It doesn’t help that Yourgrau sprinkles his narrative with highbrow

literary references and other edge-ofmainstream nods; a sense of mania and referring to people by a Terri series of nick- Schlichenmeyer names only adds to the chaos.

Fortunately, things turn around about halfway through the book. There, Yourgrau starts to dig into the reasoning and psychology of hoarding by consulting experts, which tampers the frenzy. Indeed, the second half of this book is more introspective, more downto-brass-tacks, and much more interesting.

Ultimately, I don’t think this will help much if you need advice on hoarding or cleaning. It’s just too cluttered for that but, if entertainment is your goal, here’s your book. If you can, then, “Mess” is something to find.

‘Tales of Terror!’ will be performed Oct. 30 at IVCC OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College’s theatre department will present “Tales of Terror!” at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, in the Cultural Centre.

Under direction of Don Grant Zellmer, “Tales of Terror!” is an evening of urban legends and classic horror stories brought to life by the cast of storytellers made up of students, faculty, staff and community members.

“We’ve incorporated all the best elements of storytelling, and created a terrifying and spooky atmosphere with mood lighting, fog, blacklights and

sound effects,” Zellmer said. “All this brings the storyteller’s tales to life even more, and also makes this a theatrical event – perfect for the witching season.”

In addition to the individual ghost and horror stories, the cast performs unsettling group segments, such as two-sentence horror stories. “And yes,” added Zellmer, “for one performance piece, we’re using an actual coffin.”

Local professional storyteller Tricia Kelly has been working with IVCC students on their storytelling craft and will bring her brand of eerie storytelling to

the stage with the cast.

“We are honored to work with Tricia and are grateful to have the opportunity for our students to learn this art form,” said theatre director Dr. David Kuester.

The IVCC Show Choir will perform throughout the show under the direction and choreography of Zellmer. They dance as zombies in “Thriller” and glow-in-the-dark ghosts in a novelty number, but a new segment has been added this season, “Canivale Macabre,” a vintage freak show that segues into the terrifying showcase of the oddities

and finishes with a crazed clown segment.

The cast includes Karen Lesman and Megan Norlin of LaSalle, Ashley Hurst and Matt Boehm of Peru, Jake Jakielski, Reilly Jaeger and Hillari Behrens of Marseilles, Chelsea Berg of Lostant, Clarissa Gerrard of Dalzell, Kerry Ryan of Princeton, Savanna Sondgeroth of Mendota, and Jay Church and Zach Scarbrough of Bureau.

Upcoming events announced at Bureau County Fairgrounds PRINCETON — The Bureau County Fairgrounds is going to be a happening place for the next eight weeks.

The haunted fairgrounds attraction, called Nightmare on Fairgrounds Road, will continue Friday and Saturday nights through Halloween plus Sunday, Oct. 25, too. Hours of the haunt are 7 to 9:30 p.m. Admission is $10 or $12 for a speed pass. You can get scared in the haunted barns, experience Dimension X, ride the hayrack, sit around the bonfire and even have a tasty treat in Mummy’s Eatery.

There are multiple events every weekend at the fairgrounds in November too. The pigeon show will be Saturday, Nov. 7, with free admission for the public. WZOE’s Ag Fair will be held in the exhibit halls on Saturday, Nov 14. Fol-

lowing the show, the building layout will be switched around and the huge winter garage sale will be held on Sunday, Nov. 15. Set up for the garage sale will be Saturday evening. This is a change from the regular schedule for the garage sale which is normally held on a Saturday.

To sign up to sell at the garage sale see the fair’s website at www.bureaucountyfair.com. Admission to the garage sale is free but a donation of non-perishable food for the local food pantry is asked.

The Bureau County Fair Life Member meeting has been moved to 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 16, in the Allen Building.

The Northern Illinois Model Train Fair and Farm Toy Show will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21. Admission is $4. There will be working train layouts and lots of farm toys for sale too.

The next day, Sunday, Nov 22, will be the Walneck’s Motorcycle Swap Meet.

All types of motorcycle parts and accessories will be on sale there. The hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and admission is $6. Both events will be held in the three heated exhibit halls and there will be a concession stand in the building.

The angus show and sale will be held Wednesday, Nov. 25, in the sale barn.

The Sauk Trail Gun Show will return to the fairgrounds on Saturday, Oct. 24, and Sunday, Oct. 25, and again on Saturday, Nov. 28, and Sunday, Nov. 29.

The last event on the calendar for 2015 is the vendor, craft and toy show which will be held on Saturday, Dec. 5.

It will be a great chance to get last minute Christmas gifts. Vendors can sign up to sell now.

PET OF THE MONTH Spooktackular Treats Butter Cookies Ingredients: 2 and 1/2 cups flour 1 cup butter or margarine 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 and 1/2 cups sifted powdered sugar 1 teaspoon cream of tartar 1 egg 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon vanilla Cream margarine. Add sugar gradually and cream until fluffy. Add unbeaten egg and vanilla. Beat well. Sift together dry ingredients; blend into cream mixture. Chill dough 1 hour. Roll on well-floured pastry board to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut with floured cookie cutters. Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet for 6 minutes at 400 degrees.

Icing, if wanted: Blend 1 cup sifted powdered sugar, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla or other flavoring. Add liquid to make icing easy to spread (about 1 tablespoon water). Tint with food coloring if you want.

P.S. Even though I say they are spooktackular treats, you can cut them into any shapes. They are also fun to decorate for Christmas. You can use frosting or just sugar.

Texas country singer Ronnie Fauss will perform at Princeton Coffeehouse on Oct. 24 Everybody likes sandwiches for a quick meal, either at noon or for dinnertime at night. Give one or two of these a try; I think your family will enjoy them.

Chili Coney Dogs 1 pound lean ground beef (90% lean) 1 15-ounce can tomato sauce 1/2 cup water 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 1 tablespoon dried minced onion 1/3 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon ground mustard 1/3 teaspoon chili powder 1/2 teaspoon pepper Dash cayenne pepper 8 hot dogs 8 hot dog buns split Optional toppings: shredded cheddar cheese, relish and chopped onion In a large skillet, cook ground beef over medium heat 6 to 8 minutes or until no longer pink, breaking into crumbles. Drain. Stir in tomato sauce, water, Worcestershire sauce, onion and seasonings. Place hot dogs in a 3-quart slow cooker; top with beef mixture. Cook, covered, on low for 4 to 5 hours or until heated through. Serve on buns with toppings as desired.

Texas Brisket Burgers 1 tablespoon paprika 1 teaspoon garlic powder Kosher salt and pepper 3 pounds first cut brisket, ground 8 hamburger rolls Lettuce, red onion, and potato salad for serving Heat grill to medium high. In a bowl, combine the paprika, garlic powder and 1 teaspoon each salt and pepper. Gently form the beef into 8 balls. Flatten each ball into a 3/4-inch thick patty. Using your thumb, make a shallow 1 1/2-inch wide indent in the top of each patty.

Sprinkle patties with the spice mixture.

Lightly oil the grill. Place the patties on the grill, indent facing up, and cook until the burgers release easily from the grill, 4 to 5 minutes. Flip and cook for 4 to 5 minutes more for medium. If desired grill, buns until lightly toasted. Serve the burgers on the buns with lettuce, red onion and potato salad.

West Coast Sloppy Joes 1 pound lean ground beef (90% lean) 1 medium onion, chopped 1 garlic clove, minced 1 8-ounce can tomato sauce 1/3 cup soft sun dried tomato halves (not packed in oil), chopped 1/3 cup chopped roasted sweet red peppers 2 tablespoons chopped pickled jalapeno peppers 2 tablespoons tomato paste 1 tablespoon brown sugar 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar 1/2 teaspoon Montreal steak seasoning

1/2 teaspoon pepper 6 hamburger buns split Optional toppings: chipped avocado, sour cream, shredded cheddar and chopped green onion In a large skillet, cook beef, onion and garlic over medium heat for 6 to 8 minutes until beef is no longer pink. Drain.

Stir in next nine ingredients; reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, 4 to 6 minutes, stirring occasionally. Serve on buns with toppings as desired.

Slow Cooker Beer Braised Smoked Sausage and Onions 12 smoked sausages with cheese (such as Hillshire Farms cheddar worst) 3 tablespoons butter, melted 1 tablespoon brown sugar 1 tablespoon grainy mustard 3 large onions, sliced into 1/4-inch rings 1 teaspoon caraway seeds 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 1 12-ounce can beer 12 hoagie rolls, split Mustard Shredded cheddar cheese Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium high heat. Add sausages and brown on all sides, about 10 minutes. Meanwhile, coat the bowl of a slow cooker with cooking spray. Place butter, brown sugar and mustard in slow cooker; stir in onions, caraway seeds, salt and pepper.

Place sausages over onion and pour beer over the top. Cover and cook on high for 4 hours. Serve sausages on rolls with onions. Top with mustard and cheddar.

Grilled Beef and Blue Cheese Sandwiches 2 ounces cream cheese, softened 2 ounces crumbled blue cheese 8 slices sourdough bread 3/4 pound thinly sliced deli roast beef 1/2 small red onion, thinly sliced 1/4 cup olive oil In a small bowl, mix cheeses until blended. Spread over bread slices. Layer four of the slices with roast beef and onion, top with remaining bread slices.

Brush outsides of sandwiches with oil.

In a large skillet, toast sandwiches over medium heat 4 to 5 minutes on each side or until golden brown.

PRINCETON — Ronnie Fauss, an alternative country singer-songwriter from Texas, will perform at the Princeton Coffeehouse at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24. The coffeehouse is located at Open Prairie United Church of Christ, 25 E. Marion St. in Princeton. Doors open at 7 p.m.

In 2012, Fauss released his first full-length album, “I Am the Man You Know I’m Not.” Positive reviews came from regional and national outlets like The New York Times (“songs as catchy as they are memorable”) and Vanity Fair, which called Fauss’s style “a cross between Steve Earle and Gram Parsons.”

Fauss released Built to Break, his second album, last year.

Musically inclined his whole life, Fauss has made his living, for the most part, in another realm.

Since 1999, he has been an accountant for the Dallas Mavericks.

Providing for a family (he is married with three children) and recognizing the struggle that is for many, Fauss has woven themes of everyday survival into his songs. His recent album ends with “Come

on Down,” a song about factory workers, farmers, and the very rich who benefit from the labors of people at the grassroots. “I’m not a blue-collar factory worker but in a sense, the song is autobiographical,” he recently told The Dallas Morning News. “It’s exhausting to provide for a growing family — and my dad did it before me and his before him. It’s a universal feeling.”

While Fauss writes and performs some soulful tunes, others are straight out exuberant with loud guitars and rapid-fire drums, as in his

truck-driving anthem, Eighteen Wheels. Beyond his day job, Fauss is very much part of the Dallas alt-country music scene.

After the weigh-in, there will be

PTVBC meeting PRINCETON — Princeton Tiger Volleyball Club will have the first practice and informational meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 18. PTVBC is a small club focusing on learning growth through repetition. Practice’s will be at Logan Junior High School on Wednesday nights ranging from 6-9:30 depending on the team. We will host 14U, 16U, 18U teams. We are a first come, not a tryout club; the first 12 to enter are taken.

IVCC to host instructional league

OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College men’s basketball coach Chris Herman and his players will host a fall instructional league for boys from third through eighth grade from noon to 2 p.m. continuing 31.

Emphasis will be placed on individual and team defense and offense, shooting, ball handling and league play. Participants will interact with Herman, assistant coach Justin Jacobson and members of the 2015-16 team. The $60 registration fee includes a T-shirt. To register, call 815-224-0593.

Halloween Hustle 5K LADD — The Halloween Hustle 5K will be Saturday, Oct. 24, at Ladd School. The race will start at 9 a.m. Packet pick-up and registration will be from 8 to 8:45 a.m.

Fee is $25 for ages 14 and up.

Entry fee is $10 for ages 13 and under.

UTICA — The Canal Connection 10K will be Sunday, Nov. 1, starting at 10:30 a.m. Registration will take place at Waltham School in Utica starting at 8 a.m. and end at 10 a.m.

All runners must register in Utica. Busses will begin to leave Utica at 8:30 a.m. to transport runners to the starting line at L-P High School near the west end of the I-M Canal Towpath.

A bag will be provided with your race packet in which you may secure all possessions for transport back to the finish line. The 10K is race No. 19 on the Starved Rock Runners Circuit.

The course features a downhill slope for the first .75 mile stretch. Runners will then enter the I-M Canal Towpath and run the next 4.2 miles on a flat, unpaved surface featuring rock formations and autumn scenery. The race will finish on a paved street near the Waltham School.

Pre-registration by mail through Oct. 27 is $25 and $32 after. Online registration is avail-

Indoor soccer PRINCETON — The indoor adult soccer league will start Dec. 15 at the Bureau County Metro Center. The league runs through Jan. 19 with games beginning at 5:30 p.m. Cost is $50 per team.

OGLESBY— The 37th Oglesby 3-Mile Turkey Trot will be Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 26. The race will start at 9 a.m. at Holy Family School.

Each person bringing a non-perishable food donation for the Illinois Food Pantry will receive a free gift.
