Fall is upon us in the Illinois Valley The people of the Illinois Valley aren’t the only ones who have noticed the shorter, cooler days. The autumn weather has prompted the trees to begin their annual, colorful process of preparing for the long cold winter ahead. During winter, there isn’t enough light or water for photosynthesis. They will rest until spring, living off food they’ve stored throughout the days of summer. As they begin to shut down, the green chlorophyll disappears, leaving behind the different chemicals which cause the variations in colors depending on the tree. The most vivid colors appear when late summer is dry, and autumn has bright sunny days and cool evenings. A fall with cloudy days and warm nights brings drab colors. An early frost will quickly end the beautiful display of colors. IV Scene photo/Dave Cook
