Nightmare on Fairgrounds Road If you’re looking for chills and thrills this month, head over to the Bureau County Fairgrounds in Princeton for Nightmare on Fairgrounds Road.

From 7 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 20, Saturday, Oct. 21, Friday, Oct. 27, Saturday, Oct. 28, and Sunday, Oct. 29, you’ll see all the horror and gore you’ll want for one Halloween season.

The cost to get in is $10, but you can buy a VIP pass for $15 so you don’t have to wait in line.

The old, creepy barns at the Bureau County Fairgrounds are transformed into the main haunted attraction.

Wind through the dark on dirt floors in these old wooden buildings, which only adds to the atmosphere of the event. The barns even come with bats. You never know what is going to pop out of the corner or appear in the maze of tunnels throughout the barn. And, you won’t want to miss any of the haunted scenes within the barn. Stop by the Mummies’ Eatery for some Halloween treats before you go. As your last stop, sit by the bonfire, enjoy the warmth and maybe hear a scary story. Or, just sit and visit while enjoying the evening.

Annual pumpkin races set for Oct. 28 PRINCETON — The sixth annual pumpkin races will start at noon Saturday, Oct. 28, in downtown Princeton.

This can be a family activity where everyone in the family can work on their racer, making it roll and decorating it.

The winner of each heat gets $20 and the winners go to the next heat. There will be prizes for the best decorated pumpkins.

The rules are simple: it must be a real pumpkin and the axles must go through

the pumpkin; no motors are allowed.

The entry fee is three canned goods or a monetary donation to the Bureau County Food Pantry.

There will also be a special race featuring the banks in Princeton, The Great Bank Race.

Mediacom will offer $55,000 in scholarships to high school seniors

BVHS to hold Quarter Mania fundraiser

MANLIUS — Ping pong balls rattling in a cage, bidders waving fans, tables of friends breaking out in applause and laughter — these are some of the sights and sounds of a Quarter Mania fundraising event.

On Friday, Nov. 3, Bureau Valley High School will host such an event to raise money for Renaissance, the school’s incentive program. Food will be available and doors open to the public at 5:30 p.m. to shop the vendors. The quarter auction will begin at 6:30 p.m.

More than 20 local businesses contribute to the success of the evening event. Each vendor brings two items for the auction, and can also bring other items to display or sell at the event. Vendors include: Crochet by Olivia, Pampered Chef, LuLaRoe, LipSense, Essential Oils, Mary Kay, Susan Harkness - Gifts & More, Bath Bombs, Scentsy, Tastefully Simple, Dove Chocolate, Real Time Pain Relief, Once Upon a Craft and more. There will also be lots of donations up for auction.

People buy bidding numbers, and as items are put up for auction, they bid to win them by placing 1 to 4 quarters in the container on their table. A winning number is drawn from the cage, if that person

bid, then they win the merchandise. Numbers will be drawn until a winner is found.

Bidding numbers sell for $5 for one, $8 for two or $10 for three.

The Bureau Valley Renaissance Program was created five years ago and functions in the school to promote positive behavior, academic success and school pride. It recognizes students who work hard and continually do their best. The group is led by a council of 22 high school students.

“We do all kinds of things throughout the year,” said Stephanie Gripp, Renaissance program member. “We give out free BV T-shirts, have breakfasts to honor students of the month, take a field trip to the bowling alley and movie theater every semester, which is a lot of fun.”

Renaissance also recognizes students and staff birthdays, distributes incentive reward cards for achievement in the classroom and much more. The group leaders meet several times a month to develop and implement programming ideas.

Halloween costume parade in Princeton PRINCETON — The annual Princeton Halloween parade costume contest, sponsored by the Princeton Optimist Club, for children ages 0 to 12 will be Saturday, Oct. 28, beginning at Soldiers and Sailors Park in Princeton.

Costume judging will begin at 11 a.m.

and the parade will follow. The children will parade north on Main Street to the pumpkin races where each child will receive a bag of goodies and the winners of the contest will be announced. There will be four age categories — 0-3, 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12.

‘It’s just about the love of an animal’

Bureau County couple rescues wild foxes

BY GOLDIE RAPP grapp@bcrnews.com SHEFFIELD — Don Hotchkiss and Angela Summerson of rural Sheffield consider themselves huge animal lovers. The couple has a special place in their hearts for the animals they’ve raised over the years.

Last October, they got a rare opportunity to rescue two wild animals that took their love to a whole new level.

It was later in the month when they received a call from a friend asking if they would be interested in adopting one of his father’s foxes from his home in Kewanee.

The man had raised, bred and sold foxes for many years, but had suddenly been faced with an unfortunate set of circumstances and left his home.

When he took off, he left behind 12 foxes and the humane society had been contracted to rescue them.

Before they got there, however, Summerson was able to take first pick of the ones she wanted to take home. She carefully chose two — an Arctic fox named Cheyenne and a silver fox named Nakoma.

Hotchkiss said they didn’t even think twice about bringing the wild animals home, even if it meant obtaining special state licenses to legally keep them and working with the veterinarian at Niabi Zoo to ensure they could provide the needed care of the foxes.

“Being animal lovers and these being exotic animals — there was no second thought to this at all,” he said.

When the foxes arrived

at their rural home, the only immediate shelter the couple could provide was a small outdoor cage. They both knew it wasn’t going to work long term. The wild animals needed more room to roam and a better habitat to live and be content.

“The enclosure was nowhere big enough. It’s like having any animal or dog, you want to make things better for them,” Hotchkiss said.

Not long after, the couple came up with the idea to transform an old corn crib in their wooded backyard into a sanctuary, similar to what one might find in a zoo. After a lot of planning and researching habitats, Hotchkiss began spending time after work and on the weekends clearing out trees and bushes around the corn crib and transforming the space into a permanent home for his new animals.

“It took a lot of planning, because we had to think of the wind and weather for protection,” he said.

At this time, winter was in full swing, but the two worked through the cold and snow. Many of their friends and family helped donate items needed for the cage.

Move-in day to the new cage was this past Easter Sunday.

“What a beautiful day it was,” Hotchkiss said.

Unfortunately, just months after moving to the new cage, Cheyenne escaped. While Hotchkiss and Summerson made several attempts to catch her, they were unsuccessful.

They said she stayed around the area for a few months, but they eventually stopped seeing her out and about.

Despite the setback, Hotchkiss and Summerson have gone on caring for Nakoma.

As they’ve worked to get closer to Nakoma, they’ve been able to study and pick up on many of his instinctive behaviors, which the two enjoy taking note of and sharing with others.

Nakoma now lets them sit inside his cage and he eats carrots out of their hands.

While he hasn’t yet let them pet him, they continually work to gain his trust to do so.

“If you ever lose the respect of a fox, you never get it back from what I read.

So we’re very careful in our actions and how we treat him. We’ve seen progress daily with him. It’s a love that will continually grow.

Hopefully, at some point we will be able to pet him,” Hotchkiss said.

Crossbows allowed SPRINGFIELD — Hunters in Illinois may use crossbows during archery

hunting seasons, including the Illinois archery deer season and the Illinois fall turkey archery season.

Gov. Bruce Rauner signed into law House Bill 2893, which amended the Illinois Wildlife Code to repeal restrictions on the use of crossbows during archery hunting seasons in Illinois.

Illinois law previously allowed the use of crossbows for archery hunting by persons age 62 or older, and those persons with disabilities who qualified for a crossbow permit issued by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR). In addition, the previous law allowed certain youth hunters to use crossbows, and allowed all archery hunters to use crossbows beginning the Monday after the second firearm deer season.

The 2017-18 season dates for archery deer and fall turkey archery hunting in Illinois are Oct. 1, 2017, through Jan. 14, 2018.

Archery seasons will be closed Nov. 17-19 and Nov. 30-Dec. 3 during the firearm deer season in those counties open to firearm deer hunting.

All anglers – including those using fly fishing gear who intend to release fish caught before Oct. 21 – must have a valid fishing license and an Inland Trout Stamp, unless they are under the age of 16, blind or disabled, or are an Illinois resident on leave from active duty in the Armed Forces. The daily catch limit for each angler is five trout.

Fall trout season SPRINGFIELD — The 2017 Illinois fall trout fishing season will open Saturday, Oct. 21, at 54 ponds, lakes and streams throughout the state.
