Playing for their dinner The Putnam County Music Boosters are sponsoring a spaghetti dinner and concert starting at 5 p.m. on Oct. 18 at the Putnam County High School Gymnasium. Dinner will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. and includes salad, spaghetti, bread, dessert and lemonade or tea.

The Putnam County Junior High School band and chorus will perform at 5:30 p.m. and the high school band and chorus at 6 p.m.

Starved Rock State Park is offering guided hikes to view the colors of fall. The hikes leave at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, and Sunday, Oct. 19 from the Starved Rock Visitor Center. The hikes are free.

The 10th annual Illinois Valley Toy Run, a 40-mile trip in the countryside, will be held Sunday, Oct. 19, at Soldiers and Sailors Park in Princeton. This year’s event is sponsored by the Princeton Lions Club. The event will collect toys for underprivileged children in the community for Christmas and the 50/50 ticket proceeds will go to the Princeton Buddy Bags program. STANDARD — Friday, Oct. 17, the Melikin Puppet Theatre will present the favorite spooky tale of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” at 6:30 p.m. at the Standard Branch Library, located within the Putnam County Community Center.

Using a double stage and lighting techniques, Melikin Puppet Theatre brings to life the story’s narrator Rip van Winkle, as he introduces schoolmaster, Ichabod Crane, the lovely Katrina Van Tassel and Brom Bones. After a party at Katrina’s, Ichabod is warned about riding home on the Sleepy Hollow road. The “headless horseman” is known to ride that road at night. The town wakes the next day to find that Ichabod Crane has disappeared. Did he leave town? Is there really a headless horseman? Some questions are best left unanswered. CONDIT (PUTNAM) — Thursday, Oct. 23 at 4 p.m., Cathy Grafton will discuss the enigma of an accent tapestry in her program, “Threads of History: The Story of the Bayeux Tapestry.” Soon after the 1066 Battle of Hastings, an embroidered piece, known as the Bayeux Tapestry was created. Its creation is still shrouded in mystery, but this piece tells a story that has intrigued people for almost 1,000 years.

Grafton explores the creation of the tapestry, and shares the incredible story of its survival through times of trouble and fame, over the centuries.

Easter Seals prepares for Festival of Trees UTICA — The Easter Seals of LaSalle and Bureau counties will hold its second annual Festival of Trees presented by U.S. Silica from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Nov. 22 at Celebrations 150 in Utica. Vendors, sponsors, tree decorators and volunteers are currently be secured.

This year’s Festival of Trees will be an open house, family friendly style event and will be free and open to the public. Elaborately decorated trees will be on display and available to bring home for $10 through a raffle. The event will feature performances throughout the day by local children, an Ugly Sweater Contest, a $1 raffle, a visit from Santa and door prizes. Free crafts, storytelling, book drawings and entertainment for kids will be provided

Figge exhibit features professors artwork DAVENPORT — Beginning Sept. 13, artwork by more than 40 Quad City area art professors will be on display at the Figge Art Museum for the new exhibition, Artists First: College Art Faculty of the Quad Cities.

The Figge frequently partners with colleges and universities in the region to engage students with projects, such as the College Invitational exhibition, College Night, brown bag lunches with visiting artists, classes in the studios and intern and volunteer opportunities. The college art professors are the unsung partners in these projects.

The Artists First exhibition will focus on the talents and achievements of

these professors as working artists. Works from art professors at Ashford University, Augustana College, Black Hawk College, Eastern Iowa Community College, Knox College, Monmouth College, St. Ambrose University and Western Illinois University will be featured.

The artwork on display in this exhibition was selected by guest curators Pamela White, professor of Museum Studies at Western Illinois University and former director of the University of Iowa Museum of Art, and Leslie Bell, artist and retired art professor at St. Ambrose.

Artists First will be on view through Nov. 2 and is presented through a grant from Quad City Arts.

PRINCETON — It’s that time of year when witches and ghosts caper about and the smell of caramel apples fills the air. If you’re a fan of the Halloween season and especially a haunted house aficionado, you can pack up the family, gas up the van, drive an hour or two and pay $10 to $15 a head for a quick tour through something that’s been put together in a one-week work schedule.

Or you can drive over to the Bureau County Fairgrounds in Princeton, put down $8 per person and enjoy a half-hour plus of frights and chills that have been years in the making.

Nightmare on Fairgrounds Road has been bringing your darkest nightmares to life for 11 years, with each year getting spookier than the last.

Open from 7 to 9:30 p.m.

— when the last ticket is sold — on Fridays and Saturdays through Oct. 25, the haunted house is a labor of love for Dave Mead, who has spearheaded the homegrown horror from its inception.

Mead is an amiable fellow, filled with a childlike-whimsy and is passionate about Jay Ward cartoons. Much of the creativity in the Nightmare comes from his imagination. From the beginning, he’s run the annual haunted house on a shoestring budget, but these days, he says he has more to work with.

“When we first started, we were a temporary setup. We set up for a month; we ran for a month; we tore down for a month,” Mead said. “I’m to0 old and fat and tired for that now. I requested they give us two barns which they did. We

ended up with two permanent buildings we can play with all year long.”

The haunted house uses every square inch it can squeeze out of its two building residence, with twists and turns leading you back and forth through the building four to five times, depending on the building.

If Mead is the author, Jeff Gilbert is the illustrator of your nightmares. Dozens of animated skeletons, pirates and other horrors of the night move through the house — each one painstaking rendered by Gilbert.

Whether it’s an un-dead witch stirring her cauldron of brew or a tentacled figure from your worst nightmare, it moves with a “life” of its own due to his ministrations.

“He is, as you’ll see when you walk through, the best prop builder in the state of Illinois,” Mead said. “We get show-quality props at dollar store prices because he can build. He has an eye for detail second-to-none.”

The event features live actors, animated props and the unexpected around every corner. Admission is $8 per person, but for those who don’t have time to kill, the Speed Pass is $10, and allows you to go to the front of the line. Don’t forget to fill up at Mummie’s Eatery, ride the hayracks, and get your blood warmed back up at the bonfire.

As part of the Halloween fun, Bureau County paranormal investigator and author David Youngquist of Tiskilwa will discuss his books about actual ghosts and ghost stories in our own county.

“I’m pretty proud of this year’s house,” Mead said.

“I’ll match it up against anything in downstate Illinois. For $8, you can’t get a better value.”

Stage 212 announces ‘The Rainmaker’ cast LASALLE — Stage 212 brings a classic to the stage with their fall 2014 production of “The Rainmaker.” N. Richard Nash’s heartwarming comedy centers on Lizzie Curry, a plain girl with no prospects whose father and brothers have just about given up hope of ever seeing married. Enter a sweet-talking traveling salesman who promises, for a fee, to bring rain to the drought-stricken area. Under his charming influence, Lizzie begins to see herself and her life in a whole new light.

Included in the cast are Zoe Clover as Lizzie, Andy Decker as H.C., Daniel Haun as Noah, Ryan Ziegler as Jim, Joe Peshel as File, Brian Rehor as the Sheriff and Nick Spolec as Starbuck.

How about some cookie recipes to have for your Halloween parties that are coming up? It will be here before we know it.

And who doesn’t love a cookie?

Neiman Marcus Cookies 2 cups butter 24 ounces chocolate chips 4 cups flour 2 cups brown sugar 2 teaspoons soda 1 teaspoon salt 2 cups sugar 1 8-ounce Hershey Bar, grated 5 cups blended oatmeal 4 eggs 2 teaspoons baking powder 2 teaspoons vanilla 3 cups chopped nuts (your choice) Note: Recipe may be halved. Measure oatmeal and blend in a blender to a fine powder. Cream the butter and both sugars. Add eggs and vanilla, mix together with flour, oatmeal, salt, baking powder and soda. Add chocolate chips, Hershey Bar and nuts. Roll into balls. And place two inches apart on a cookie sheet. Bake for 10 minutes at 375°. Makes 112 cookies.

Cowboy Cookie Mix 1 1/3 cups quick cooking oats 1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup chopped pecans 1 cup (6 ounces) semisweet chocolate chips 1/2 cup packed brown sugar

1/2 cup sugar (Additional ingredients when ready to bake) 1/2 cup butter, melted 1 egg, lightly beaten 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Pour oats into a wide-mouth 1-quart glass container with a tight fitting lid.

Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Place on top of oats.

Layer with pecans, chocolate chips, brown sugar and sugar. Packing each layer tightly (do not mix). Cover and store in a cool dry place for up to 6 months.

To prepare cookies: Pour cookie mix into a large mixing bowl. Stir to combine ingredients. Beat in butter, egg and vanilla.

Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Roll into 1-inch balls. Place 2 inches apart on greased baking sheets. Bake at 350° for 11 to 13 minutes or until set. Remove to wire racks to cool. Makes 3 1/2 dozen cookies.

IVCC alumni game

OGLESBY — The annual Illinois Valley Community College men’s basketball alumni game at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, in IVCC’s gym will benefit Lily Rosploch of La Salle.

The alumni team will take on new coach Chris Herman’s first squad led by sophomores Torrance Johnson (Chicago Hope Academy) and Michael McCray (Champaign Centennial) along with more than a dozen freshmen including Harold Fay of Putnam County and Nathan Helle of Henry.

Alumni invitees include Tom Tunnell, Michael Murray, Brett Barkman, Adrian Burleson, Leo Moran, Eric Heider, Derick Baird, Brandon Kays, Chad Sipovic, Joe Petelin, Mike Gills, Roosevelt Jones and Kevin Fay. Greg Oseland will be the alumni team’s player-coach.

Fans will be encouraged to contribute to “Rally for Lily,” the fund drive for the three-year-old daughter of Mike and Maria Rosploch.
